Links to long PDF documents can be made more convenient by taking readers to a specific page with the addition of #page=n to the document URL, where n is the page number. For example, using http://www.domain.com/document.pdf#page=5 as the citation URL displays page five of the document in any PDF viewer that supports this feature. If the viewer or browser does not support it, it will display the first page instead.

Infobox "Result"
Please note that Template:Infobox military conflict#Parameters states against "result" that "this parameter may use one of two standard terms: "X victory" or "Inconclusive"." The infobox has been amended to reflect this. Please read the template "result" guidance in full before amending or reverting. It would probably be best to discuss any proposed change here first to seek consensus. Thanks.

TFA blurb checklist[edit]

 1. Top and tail - check for FT, but not GT.
 2. Cut and paste lead.
 3. Select image. This may involve cropping.
 4. Use
 5. If image is not directly of the article subject matter, add (pictured)
 6. The first link in the blurb must be to the TFA article.
 7. Reduce total text to 925-1,025 characters.
 8. Don't deviate from the meaning of the lead and/or article without checking with the nominating editor.
 9. If cause-and-effect words (because, due to, so as to, in order to, therefore) aren't already present, don't add them. Same goes for contrast words (but, however, although, despite).
 10. Avoid wall of blue. Max of two consecutive links.
 11. Always place numbers in the context of events or facts rather than scholarly opinion, if possible.
 12. Click through every Wikilink and avoid all redirects. Links are case sensitive.
 13. Paste to FAC review talk page as ==TFA blurb review==
 14. Include "xxx characters, including spaces.
 15. End with " Hi and anyone else interested: a draft TFA blurb for this article is above. Thoughts, comments and edits are welcome. ~~~~
 16. " Hi and congratulations. A draft TFA blurb for this article is above. Thoughts, comments and edits from you or from anyone else interested are welcome. ~~~~
 17. Use edit summary of " Draft blurb. See User:Gog the Mild/Blurbs for attribution.
 18. TFAP reminder: " Hi, you have listed [[]] for TFA at pending for February. I have tentatively reserved a date for it, but if you would still like it be considered you will need to nominate it at Wikipedia:Today's featured article/requests, which is now open. Cheers. ~~~~

TFA scheduling[edit]

You can schedule any time you want, but probably best to wait until we are about a week into April, to make sure that looks settled.

You’ve probably realised that the idea is to get a spread of topics over the month, harder than it used to be since so many of the remaining FAs are concentrated in a handful of categories. Apart from TFAR, you’ll always need to check the talk page to see if it has already run/is currently listed.

I’d start with https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia:Today%27s_featured_article/requests and https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia:Today%27s_featured_article/requests/pending

then add any date connected articles. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia:Featured_articles_that_haven%27t_been_on_the_Main_Page/Date_connection is hopelessly out of date and inaccurate, but otherwise you’ll have to hover for eg bio dates at https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia:Featured_articles_that_haven%27t_been_on_the_Main_Page

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia:Featured_article_candidates/Featured_log is also useful.

Be wary with old articles on topics that can age, like BLPs and geography, they may have deteriorated, https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia:Unreviewed_featured_articles/2020 may help

Watch for featured (not good) topics, needs Part of the title featured topic. parameter, and the added words count to the blurb total.

If you run a William Etty painting, talk to user Iridescent nicely first.

Most of the FAs not to run, except the first three, are because the editors will make a fuss. A partial list is September Morn Finn M. W. Caspersen London Necropolis Company Political history of medieval Karnataka Western Chalukya Empire Peter Sellers Rod Steiger Blue men of the Minch. There will be others.

Orangutan and Dementia with Lewy bodies have non-obvious date links, not in May

The point of listing the month in order is that the bot will run overnight and convert the at the bottom of each page into the recent list, so there must be something on the previous day. If the schedule changes after the bot has run, you’ll have to amend the recent list manually

Reruns maximum one a week, preferably fewer, can't have run in last five years (except Groundhog Day} format maindate2= on article talk page

And more![edit]

TFA for dummies

Mike Christie

13 January 2017

1. Pick an article to be TFA.

a. What I did for the first month I scheduled was to create the whole month as a list in a spreadsheet. This has a couple of advantages; I can add columns for main author, topic area and promotion year, and make sure there are no duplicates or topics too close together.

b. I suggest going through the date connections and TFARs first and filling those in, and then using the non-specific date TFARs, and finally filling the gaps with the “no date connection” ones.

2. Pick an image from the article to go with it. It can’t be fair-use.

3. Start from the TFA month page (e.g. Wikipedia:Today's featured article/January 2017) and use the create links to create the TFA blurb and image. This will be partially prepopulated.

a. Image – if there’s no suitable image just leave this out completely. If the article has been nominated at TFAR there will be a suggested image and caption there; you can paste that in, though in a couple of cases I’ve made a different choice.

b. Copy the wikitext of the entire lead (not including infoboxes or images) in after the TFAIMAGE template. Delete any references, and also delete paragraph breaks. Add a link around the initial bolded text to link to the article. Dan and/or the main authors will cut it to 1100 characters; you don’t need to cut it. If the article has been nominated at TFAR there will be a blurb there, and an image; you can just paste in that blurb.

c. (Full article...) at the end of the blurb paragraph

d. This will be prepopulated but will be wrong if you’re scheduling next month, in which case fix it manually.

4. Once that page is created, remove the article from Wikipedia:Featured articles that haven't been on the Main Page/No date connection or Wikipedia:Featured articles that haven't been on the Main Page/Date connection as appropriate.

5. If the article was nominated at TFAR:

a. Close the template at WP:TFAR by changing "{{TFARsubpage" to "{{subst:TFARsubpage", "|passed=" to "|passed=yes" and "|date=" to "|date=(date of TFA appearance)" (i.e. you'd write "|date=January 13, 2016").

b. Remove the TFAR template from WP:TFAR and the nomination from the table.

6. If you have scheduled a TFA for a date on which another article was nominated:

a. Close the TFAR with “passed=no”, and remove the TFAR from WP:TFAR and the nomination from the table. Give an edit summary with the reason. b. Update Wikipedia:Unsuccessful nominations for Today's Featured Article

7. Add “ |maindate= May 2024 ” with the appropriate date to the Article history template on the article talk page; I think it can go anywhere but I’ve been putting it after the “|currentstatus = FA” line. If you find an existing “maindate” check to make sure that the article has not already appeared on the front page; I had this happen once. For reruns use “|maindate2= May , 2024” Must normally be a five-year gap.

8. Notify whichever author(s) nominated the successful FAC on their talk page. I’ve been using

[[]] scheduled for TFA
This is to let you know that the above article has been scheduled as today's featured article for May 2024. Please check that the article needs no amendments. Feel free to amend the draft blurb, which can be found at Wikipedia:Today's featured article/May 2024, or to make comments on other matters concerning the scheduling of this article at Wikipedia talk:Today's featured article/May 2024. Please keep an eye on that page, as comments regarding the draft blurb may be left there by user:dying, who assists the coordinators by making suggestions on the blurbs, or by others. I also suggest that you watchlist Wikipedia:Main Page/Errors from two days before it appears on the Main Page. Thanks and congratulations on your work! ~~~~
