Hello, I'm BracketBot. I have automatically detected that your edit to Herm may have broken the syntax by modifying 1 "()"s. If you have, don't worry: just edit the page again to fix it. If I misunderstood what happened, or if you have any questions, you can leave a message on my operator's talk page.

Admin needed please

Hi, I was working on the Herm article in my sandbox a little while ago, User:Matty.007/sandbox/Herm, before I took it to GAR. Is some kind of history merge needed? Thanks, Matty.007 14:00, 19 January 2014 (UTC)
It's really better not to do that: the danger is that if a sandbox version and the main article are worked on simultaneously. a history-merge (which arranges all the revisions in time/date order) produces a confusing effect as revisions from the two separate developments are interleaved. In this case there was only one edit to the main article while you were working on the sandbox, but IMO it would still be better not to do a histmerge. The point of it would be to ensure attribution of all contributions, but since you were the only one who worked on the sandbox, and your contributions to the article are properly attributed by your edits there, there isn't a problem. I should just tag the sandbox with {{db-u1}}. JohnCD (talk) 15:07, 19 January 2014 (UTC)
OK, I wasn't sure; thanks. Matty.007 15:20, 19 January 2014 (UTC)

His Last Vow

{{admin help}} Hi, sorry for pinging an admin, but the edits by IPs to His Last Vow are bringing me to the end of my tether. There is one in particular, 68.149.113.34, who keeps adding unsourced speculation with the faintest of links, and simply keeps re-adding the information. Is it enough for page protection/block/some kind of notice? Thanks, Matty.007 15:17, 26 January 2014 (UTC)

I've added a level 2 warning about adding WP:OR, when we have added enough warnings then we can block - seems like only one IP - so that's the way to go. Standard warnings are listed at Wikipedia:Template messages/User talk namespace, or you can use WP:TW to add them. WP:RFPP would need to see regular vandal attacks from more than one IP.  Ronhjones  (Talk) 16:44, 26 January 2014 (UTC)
I wasn't sure if it was worthy of a warning, thank you very much for the help. Matty.007 16:50, 26 January 2014 (UTC)

RFC summary

Hi Matty.

Do you know how to do a close on an RFC, as far as formatting? And do you mean to do it on this one? If so, I think it's Template:DRN archive top. If you weren't looking to do that yet, then never mind. — Maile (talk) 17:31, 26 January 2014 (UTC)

What I was thinking of doing was seeing the response to my summary, then perhaps asking an uninvolved editor if needed. Thanks, Matty.007 17:39, 26 January 2014 (UTC)

A barnstar for you!

The Tireless Contributor Barnstar
For your efforts to expand Herm and get up to GA status. ♦ Dr. Blofeld 16:03, 30 January 2014 (UTC)

Good job! I think though we can improve it further. I've restructured it a little and expanded on geography. I think it could use a lot more book sources, try here You can paste a google book url into here, none of that book ref name stuff!! Offhand I think the church (I think) and the Fisherman's cottage in particular might have more info available. I've reformatted the books into a bibliography as I intend adding a lot more book sources. I'll try to help you further improve over the weekend/sometime next week maybe. The lead also needs expansion to summarize the whole article including services and landmarks.. I've put in a request too for a detailed map of the island. Thanks Matty anyway! Is the number 7 for Le Tissier or are you my arch enemy 007 :-]? ♦ Dr. Blofeld 13:54, 30 January 2014 (UTC)

Thank you very much for the barnstar, and for expanding the page as well. I will have a look for some more refs. I hadn't seen that book ref formatter before, that is probably going to be very helpful. I will have a look at the lead sometime soon. My name is, I am afraid, after the Great Man himself, so sworn enemies will have to work for mutual gain... Thanks again, best, Matty.007 17:44, 30 January 2014 (UTC)
While looking at Channel Island pages, I saw that you also wrote White House (Herm). Have you been to Herm? Also, have you seen the Channel Islands portal? Thanks, Matty.007 19:13, 30 January 2014 (UTC)

Hehe. You've got good taste anyway! Haven't been to the Channel Islands since I was a small kid but some of my earliest memories come from Jersey. When I collected stamps as a kid I was always fascinated by the obscure stamps from the litttle islands like Herm and Jethou. Not a special interest no, but I do like articles on that area, I believe I also worked on St Anne, Alderney, its harbour, Alderney Society Museum, and Jerbourg Point etc. The prose might not be the best on a few of those though as they were a collaboration with an editor who wasn't a native speaker and he provided a lot of text to them. I have an interest in hotels/country houses, that's mainly why I started the White House! I'll try to add more book sources over the next few days. As it currently is it's in good shape to make further improvements.♦ Dr. Blofeld 19:24, 30 January 2014 (UTC)

Thanks for the links, I hadn't seen the Alderney Society Museum, I will add it to the DYKs. Thanks again, Matty.007 19:28, 30 January 2014 (UTC)

The others were Braye Harbour and Mignot Memorial Hospital I think along with a few stubs on geo features on the south coast of Guernsey I think. Some of the ones like Sark and Jethou might be worth expanding and fairly easier to get up to GA given their small size. Much easier than Jersey or Guernsey anyway!♦ Dr. Blofeld 19:31, 30 January 2014 (UTC)

They look great! My eventual (quite long term) ambition is to get all the inhabited, then if possible all the islands to GA status. It is quite ambitious though and may take some time... Best, Matty.007 19:35, 30 January 2014 (UTC)
I have put them on the noms page for the Channel Islands portal DYK so that I don't forget to add them at some point. Thanks, Matty.007 19:41, 30 January 2014 (UTC)

WikiCup 2014 January newsletter

The 2014 WikiCup is off to a flying start, with, at time of writing, 138 participants. The is the largest number of participants we have seen since 2010. If you are yet to join the competition, don't worry- the judges have agreed to keep the signups open for a few more days. By a wide margin, our current leader is newcomer Smithsonian Institution Godot13 (submissions), whose set of 14 featured pictures, the first FPs of the competition, was worth 490 points. Here are some more noteworthy scorers:

Featured articles, featured lists, featured topics and featured portals are yet to play a part in the competition. The judges have removed a number of submissions which were deemed ineligible. Typically, we aim to see work on a project, followed by a nomination, followed by promotion, this year. We apologise for any disappointment caused by our strict enforcement this year; we're aiming to keep the competition as fair as possible.

Wikipedians interested in friendly competition may be interested to take part in The Core Contest; unlike the WikiCup, The Core Contest is not about audited content, but, like the WikiCup, it is about article improvement; specifically, The Core Contest is about contribution to some of Wikipedia's most important article. Of course, any work done for The Core Contest, if it leads to a DYK, GA or FA, can earn WikiCup points.

If you are concerned that your nomination—whether it is at good article candidates, a featured process, or anywhere else—will not receive the necessary reviews, please list it on Wikipedia:WikiCup/Reviews. If you want to help out with the WikiCup, please do your bit to help keep down the review backlogs! Questions are welcome on Wikipedia talk:WikiCup, and the judges are reachable on their talk pages or by email. Good luck! If you wish to start or stop receiving this newsletter, please feel free to add or remove yourself from Wikipedia:WikiCup/Newsletter/Send. Good effort

Hello, I admire the time and effort it took to set up the page, it is too soon to have a separate page for episodes for The Musketeers. Especially when not even the first series has finished airing. MisterShiney 19:15, 10 February 2014 (UTC)

I would disagree, given the amount of information I found, having a separate article already seems reasonable. Thanks, Matty.007 19:18, 10 February 2014 (UTC)

DYK

Yes. Hafspajen (talk) 19:43, 15 February 2014 (UTC)

OK Hafspajen, so here's my crash course:

OK, this is more of a specialist area, but it is good to know about content development, i.e. how to expand articles, how to write them, and how to identify articles of a good quality. The rules at DYK are numerous, and listed here and here. I would advise having a look at those before doing anything at DYK, but I shall attempt to summarise the main elements of the rules:

  • Any article can be nominated within 5 days of mainspace creation, so long as it is over 1500 characters of readable prose (I use this for character counting
  • Any newly listed GA can be nominated within 5 days of listing (provided it hasn't been in DYK before) so long as it is over 1500 characters of readable prose
  • Any article which has had the number of prose characters expanded fivefold can be nominated within 5 days so long as it is over 1500 characters of readable prose
  • Any unsourced BLP which has had the prose expanded twofold and is newly sourced can be nominated within 5 days so long as it is over 1500 characters of readable prose
  • A rule of thumb is at least one source per paragraph, but more if possible
  • The hook (i.e. the "... that interesting fact") needs to have a source directly after where it is stated in the article
  • Everything stated in the hook must be stated and referenced in the article
  • Hooks should be neutral point of view (i.e. don't make mistakes such as I did here, especially with BLPs)
  • After you have five 'credits' (i.e. five articles have been on the main page after nomination by you) you need to begin reviewing one nomination per every article you nominate (this is called QPQ)
  • In the hook, the article being nominated must be bolded and linked
  • If you want to use an image, make sure it is fair use
  • No redlinks in the hook
  • No bare URLs

When you want to nominate articles, go to Template talk:Did you know. Scroll down to the box which says 'YOUR ARTICLE TITLE', and after reading the yellow steps, input the nomination title and you should see this (go into edit mode on this section so that you can see what it actually looks like, as it has been compressed):

{{subst:NewDYKnomination | article = Article title in plain text; no [[ ]] | article2 = | status = new or expanded or BLP expanded or mainspace or GA | hook = ... that ....? | author = Article creator or expander, in plain text; no ~~~~ or [[ ]] | author2 = | image = | caption = | comment = | reviewed = If you reviewed another article before listing this DYK nomination, put it here. Otherwise leave this line alone; it will blank when saved. }}

  • Article: where the name of the article being nominated goes, do not link it
  • Article2: for if there are multiple articles being nominated
  • Status: delete all but the relevant one
  • Hook: where you write the part that goes on the main page, start writing after the ?
  • Author: again, no linking, just the creator's name
  • Author2: for if there are multiple main authors
  • Image: where the 'File:Image' part goes if you want a picture used (note: the image must be used in the article
  • Caption: only fill this in if there is an image, write a description of the picture
  • Comment: if you, as the nominator, have anything to say about the nomination
  • Reviewed: where QPQ goes if necessary
I know this is quite a bit, but if you have any questions, please ask. Thanks, Matty.007 19:49, 15 February 2014 (UTC)
I think you mean not fair use in the third bullet from the bottom of the first section (i.e. any image you want to use must be free.) ~HueSatLum 20:19, 15 February 2014 (UTC)
Whoops, thanks for catching that. Thanks again, Matty.007 20:22, 15 February 2014 (UTC)
OH ; MY: I am studying it, great work. Hafspajen (talk) 20:31, 15 February 2014 (UTC)
WEll, maybe he was.... :) There is a hook, I don't know how to check image, that it is fair use. Is there any tool? Hafspajen (talk) 21:47, 15 February 2014 (UTC)
I don't think so, what is best is to go onto the image page and that it doesn't have a fair use rationale, and read the license section. Thanks, Matty.007 11:33, 16 February 2014 (UTC)
Great work here above, thanks Matty. Hafspajen (talk) 18:50, 16 February 2014 (UTC)
