Ski Aggu (born August Jean Diederich; 3 November 1997) is a German rapper. He wears ski sunglasses as his hallmark.

Biography[edit]

Ski Aggu grew up in Berlin-Wilmersdorf.[1] His Grandfather is Nils Diederich, a German SPD politician and political scientist.[2]

Starting in 2018 Aggu released music on SoundCloud. Those early tracks already emphasize partying, yet the mood is darker and more melancholic. They often feature “Ritter Lean” alias Julius Tillmann.[3]

According to his own statements, Ski Aggu lived in Irleland for a while, where he practiced Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu intensively and became Irish champion in his class. This form of martial arts is also reflected in his online presences and music videos through distinctive poses.[4]

Ski Aggu’s first single Weißwein & Pappbecher was released in 2020 during Covid.[5] Since then, he has been releasing new tracks on a regular basis. His second release Super Wavy featuring YPG Pave remained his most streamed song on Spotify, until Party Sahne was released in 2022.[4]

After playing some live shows in clubs in summer 2021, Ski Aggu started performing at German festivals like the Heroes festival,[6] splash!,[7] Poolbar-Festival or the Frequency festival[8] in 2022. For his track Hubba Bubba Aggu worked with Southstar, a famous music producer from Berlin.[9]

In Oktober 2022, with the release of Party Sahne produced by Endzone and Ericson, Aggu achieved a breakthrough in his career. The melody of the song was inspired by Jerk it out from the Swedish Band Ceasars. It reached number 32 on the German Singles Charts [10] In November and December 2022, Ski Aggu played his first tour Après Ski in many major cities in the German-speaking region.[11]

On 2 December 2022, Ski Aggu released his debut album 2022 war Film gewesen, which contains four new songs.[12] Yannik Gölz from Laut.de wrote that Ski Aggu is attuned to atmosphere and knows that he does not have to spell out the effect of his music. Although some of the songs apparently seemed sketch-like, but all in all there was “just too much good to take away musically” to “not appreciate” 2022 war Film gewesen “as an interesting statement”. The reviewer awarded four out of five stars.[13]

On 25 May 2023, the single Friesenjung was released in collaboration with Dutch rapper Joost Klein and comedian Otto Waalkes. The song is a reinterpretation of the eponymous original by Otto Waalkes and reached number one in the single charts in Germany and Austria.[14] For all three of the artists, this was their first number-one-hit of their careers. In July, respectively in August 2023, Aggu released the singles mietfrei with Southstar and Sira and Theater★ with $oho Bani.

On 12 October 2023, his second album Denk mal drüber nach… was released via Universal Music Group, which reached first place in the German album charts. In October 2023, his tour entitled Wahlkampftour 2023 began, which envisages performances in Germany and Austria. Supposedly, the aim is running for chancellor in the 2025 elections. The Tagesspiegel commented on this with “Not everything the Wilmersdorfer says, can be taken at face value” and refers to his alleged age of 18, despite of mentioning studies in his texts.[4]

Style[edit]

Characteristic for Ski Aggu, is wearing Ski goggles during public appearances. Another trademark is his mullet.[15] In 2022, the Tagesspiegel described “West-Berlin locations”, party excesses as well as wordplay between humour and “socio-critical snapshots” as formative for Ski Aggu’s lyrics. In an interview, he spoke in favour of a “more social capitalism”.[4] According to the news portal Watson, Ski Aggu relies on “a lot of wit and 2000’s nostalgia”. In an interview with the Tagesspiegel, Ski Aggu explained that he can’t sing, which is why he wanted to stand out through “cool punchlines”.[16]

He promotes himself and his music primarily through the social networks Instagram and TikTok. There, he presents himself as a petty criminal hooligan.[4] Johann Voigt from Die Zeit describes him as "a representative of a post-pandemic hedonism that unfolds in clubs, at open-air events, and on the internet" and his musical style as "a pattern of indifference and catchiness, danceable beats, memorable slogans, and party stories."[17]
