About You![edit]

write over this and tell me what you want to do on Wikipedia Well, I have been using Wikipedia for at least the last year, reading through articles etc., however only in the last week or so have I really got into Wikipedia and started editing articles, reverting vandalism, and other things.

On wikipedia, I would really like to improve and create articles about my local area of Mid Sussex. The first thing I ever typed into Wikipedia was the name of my village! I guess it's because it's one of a few things that I know a lot better than anyone else on here.

In the last two days, I have began to get really interested in reverting vandalism. I don't use Huggle (I think I have to be an administrator for that?, it just says it requires rollback when I try to log in), instead I use a much more complex method of checking the list of new users, seeing their contributions, seeing if it's vandalism, then, reverting and using 'Friendly' on their page if it is, or just using 'Friendly' to welcome them to Wikipedia if it isn't.

I guess I know how to create and edit articles. So far I've created these:

All of which have very little in common, however I know things about them and I wanted to try out creating tables, references, and infoboxes with them.

I also know (as mentioned above), how to spot vandals.. however, not very well :P.

About Me[edit]

As mentioned above, I've used Wikipedia for the last year at least, to help with my studies and revision, however in the last few months I've started to edit more and more, untill in the last few weeks I've been on Wikipedia for at least 2 hours a day.

I use Friendly and Twinkle to edit articles. I use Mozilla Firefox to browse and Vista (it came free with my new pc :S) as an operating system. I am a student who lives near London in the UK.

Things to Do[edit]

First of all is this page on your watchlist? Second, you can link to an article by placing [[name of article]]. Apologies if you already know that but you didn't use it for the articles above.
Huggle is not limited to admins- you have to have ROLLBACK in order to use it though.
Your method of finding vandals is in I use sometimes, you will see a link to the 'new users' log in the menu at the top of this page.

Wikimarkup is coding what you type so that it works better, for example using square brackets to [[link]] to another article, or adding three apostrophes to get '''bold text'''. I think I'll start with Articles for deletion. Look at AFD or specifically Articles for deletion/Log/2009 January 10 for deletion discussions today (Saturday 10th Jan). There's a guide at AfD which explains what to do, but explained quickly, find something which interests you (or not!) and assess the nomination. It may be an obvious discussion- an article which serves no purpose or could merged with another etc. Make a decision, and place a bold delete or keep at the bottom of the list. In order to see other comments, don't be the first to vote on a discussion. Sometimes it may be practical to instead opt for merge with... if necessary. Always add a reason- saying per nom. (per nominator) is not always viewed as worth consideration. At the end, an admin will review the AfD and basically decide whether to delete or not.

Lol, perhaps a signature would be nice :). Really I just want to edit more articles around my area, and also try to be the first to delete vandalism :D.

It depends. To be safe I'd agree and wait a few more days. If you revert and warn 50 more cases of vandalism I'm sure you'll pass. It's the quality of your reverts as well as the quantity that count. That basically means issuing the correct warnings etc... I got rollback less than a month after being here, and that was before I discovered Twinkle. Well done, you got them! I thought your request would be accepted- I just didn't want you to be rejected! You're in now! Twinkle and Rollback work together, as you'll see when you next use Twinkle.

Huggle is complicated! Or at least, more complex than the old way, and I think I prefer the old way too. I managed to create my very own 'signature', this will be the first time I try it out :P:

Yeah... it doesn't work :S. Got any ideas? I checked 'Raw signature', however it kept coming up with ' Invalid raw signature. Check HTML tags.' :P.

Create a page for your signature such as User:²wenty³/sig. Place your signature there. Then put {{subst:User:²wenty³/sig}} in the box at your preferences. Tick the box then save. It should then work. Good luck! Oliver Fury, Esq. message • contributions 18:57, 22 January 2009 (UTC)

Well done. Since I'm bored I'll tell you a few things about Huggle. At the top you'll see some big buttons. Click on the blue arrow and you will filter through edits. If you see one which is vandalism, click the button to its left (the red one). That will revert and warn the editor automatically. Just keep doing that. If you click on the arrow to the right of the revert button, you'll see a list of warnings (for page blanking or edit tests etc...). Try it out, but only revert if it is vandalism!
