In 2014, you added an angle bracket notation to the page List of small groups, but did not explain what the angle bracket notation meant. I have not been able to find the meaning of this notation. "Inner" vertices have 10 outgoing edges and "outer" 8

@Tomruen: Since the 24-cell is a regular 4-polytope, every vertex should have the same number of direct edges. Because there is a total of 96 edges and a total of 24 vertices, there should be 96/(24/2) = 8 edges outgoing from (and incoming to) every vertex. But in the figure c:File:24-cell t0 F4.svg (or orthographically more correctly "File:24-cell to F4.svg") I count 10 outgoing edges from the vertices of the inner circle. –Nomen4Omen (talk) 13:04, 26 September 2021 (UTC)

O I see! There are only 8 edges going out from the inner vertices. Wouldn't it be possible to move the inner vertices a little bit further out (or in!) so that this coincidence is avoided. I assume, the approach which you have chosen in the above version would not be feasible for all inner vertices.

The projection is in the 12-fold symmetry F4 Coxeter plane. If it was shifted slightly, you'd lower the symmetry, probably into 6-fold symmetry. The Coxeter plane projections can be tricky. I color vertices if coinciding, red=1, orange=2, etc. Edges are transparent, so they do look darker when overlapping so a small hint. But if a vertex is sitting on another edge, it takes more sleuthing to clarify, like I did with my drawing above. Tom Ruen (talk) 10:13, 27 September 2021 (UTC)

I understand why you might like to do this, but I must prefer purity of geometry - it is what it is. There are many polytopes with the same projections List_of_F4_polytopes, getting progressively more overlapping elements in B4, B3, and B2 Coxeter planes. It's just not something to fix. Color coding coincident vertices for 2D projections of polytopes

Hello Tom,

Thanks for the drawings you provided at https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/120-cell#Orthogonal_projections and https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/600-cell#2D_projections. They have been very helpful in my recent work. Specifically, the color coding of the vertices to indicate the number of coincident vertices was most helpful to me. The fact that edges are transparent, so they look darker when overlapping, was not obvious so thanks for pointing that out above.

Some of the projections obviously have no coincicent vertices so all 120 vertices are shown in red. I was able to reverse engineer the color code for 600-cell_t0.svg and discovered that red represents a single vertex, orange coresponds to 2 coincident vertices and yellow coresponds to 4, so we have (4 red * 1 = 4) + (24 orange * 2 = 48) + (17 yellow * 4 = 68) = 120 vertices as expected.

However, in the case of 600-cell_t0_A2.svg, the same color code does not add up to 120 vertices. Instead, we have (6 red * 1 = 6) + (24 orange * 2 = 48) + (7 yellow * 4 = 28) = 82, not 120.

Similarly, 600-cell_t0_H3.svg, does not add up to 120 vertices either. Instead, we have (10 red * 1 = 10) + (20 orange * 2 = 40) + (1 yellow * 4 = 4) = 54, not 120.

Three of the similar projections on the 120-cell page have coincident vertices as indicated by the various colors. Since my immediate interest is in the 600-cell, I have not yet tried to evaluate their color codes except to note that some of them have as many as 4 colors including green which is not used on any of the 600-cell projections.

I assume that the colors used in the various projections are correct in that all vertices of a given color within a single drawing will all have the same number of coincident vertices, but it seems that the number of coincident vertices represented by a particular color is inconsistent from one drawing to the next (with the likely exception of red=1).

Could you possibly indicate the meaning of each color, either in the drawings themselves or better yet, use a consistent color code across all of the drawings and then document the meaning of the color code as text somewhere on the pages that use the drawings?

I understand that these changes may require a non-trivial investment of your time, so in the interum, could you at least, point me to the interpretation of the colors for the two files I mentioned above on the 600-cell page since those are the two of immediate interest to me?

Hi David. Yes, it was something I thought about after I generated them all, some of them I might have added overlap-counts as SVG comments. Your deductions are correct, spectral colors red, orange, yellow, green,... sequence progressively more overlaps, but not specific counts. So might be 1=red, 2=orange, or could be 1=red, 3=orange or even 8=red! Using a consistent color would have been problematic since could be high degree. I agree, like for File:600-cell_t0_H3.svg, 10 red, 20 orange, 1 yellow, we have 10R+20E+1Y=120, and R<E<Y, but hard to deduce from that. Tom Ruen (talk) 08:16, 30 September 2021 (UTC)

E8 Quasicrystals

Hi Tom.

A long time ago I asked for your help understanding this orthogonal projection which you calculated. My motivation was to take the Fourier transform of the projected vertices (as Dirac deltas). I recently uploaded a Youtube video showing continuous rotations between the orthogonal projections on the 4_21 polytope page. This structure shows up at 1m11s. I explain some of the details in the description.

I thought you might be interested to see the result. One idea I have to further improve the video is to show the projected (pre-Fourier transform) vertices moving around as the plane/structure rotates. I would be appreciative if you could teach me how you made those figures. Right now I am stitching many still frames together, but a more elegant animation method might be better for that aspect of the video.

Boerdijk–Coxeter helix illustrations

Thank you for your edits improving my photo of a magnetic-stick model. I didn't have the expertise to create a rendered model as you did for the Boerdijk–Coxeter helix article. I transcluded your excellent illustration there into the 600-cell article, where I found your colorings of the various edges and chords very necessary to refer to (in my explanatory Efn footnotes about the 30-cell rings of the 600-cell). Did you happen to see my comment on the Talk page of your Wikimedia Commons image file? (That was probably the wrong place for me to put it.)
