Wikipedia:Featured picture candidates/Black slug[edit]

You opposed this picture because of the "manmade background", but as the nominator said, it's not man-made. It's a rock. Slugs like rocks. I would seriously reconsider your vote. — 0918BRIAN • 2006-03-4 20:54

I was in the middle of writing a reply to this explaining why I don't think it looks natural but I see Obli has now confirmed the surface is asphalt. It's a pity and I did hate going from a support to opposing like that. The slug is still fantastic but I think it would be so much better on a vegetative background so I'm going to stay with oppose for now ~ VeledanTalk 12:02, 6 March 2006 (UTC)

Your Bladderwort-pictures[edit]

Hello Veledan, at first: Congratulations to the very well made article on bladderworts, I am impressed. I am the editor of quite a few articles concerning CP's in the German Wikipedia and right now quite busy with a project to make a book from them (a publisher is cooperating quite close with the WP and its editors since a while here). Though "my" article on Utricularia is already a featured article in de (check it if you like, though it meanwhile needs a rework again) I regrettably couldn't get to much good pictures for it. Your pictures are great, especially the sketches are well made, and I'd be very glad if you could upload them to the commons, where I and others can use them too.

It's nice to see, that finally someone is working on this quite neglected area in en too, in case I can helpful (literature?), just drop a note at de:Benutzer:Denisoliver, some international cooperation might make this even more funny and even might give the WP a better image within the CP-community. If you are interested to see some of the work I already did, these examples might be representative: Sundews, Butterworts or Darlingtonia. Best regards. Denisoliver 07:50, 9 March 2006 (UTC)

Your slug FPC picture[edit]

I notice you uploaded an edited version of the black slug FPC, Image:Slug edit crop.jpg. As this version wasn't promoted, it currently isn't being used in any articles. Would you like me to delete it as a redundant image, or would you prefer to keep it uploaded? Raven4x4x 08:56, 14 March 2006 (UTC)

Copied from User talk:Raven4x4x:
Yes, please delete it. I've ust IfD'd tonnes of my old FPC edits that are currently orphaned. —Vanderdeckenξφ 09:22, 14 March 2006 (UTC)

  • And that slug too! Thanks for asking (and for doing the housekeeping like this!), but yes get rid of the cropped slug :-) ~ VeledanTalk 10:28, 14 March 2006 (UTC)

Wikipedia:Featured_picture_candidates/Typeset_writing_examples[edit]

I have uploaded, and propose supporting the original, unmodified scan - historical significance. If you agree, please feel free to re-consider your vote. Greetings, --Janke | Talk 14:36, 23 March 2006 (UTC)

  • Agreed, I updated my vote ~ VeledanTalk 21:50, 23 March 2006 (UTC)

Re: FIC[edit]

Sorry about that. I only noticed your message on FIC after I had promoted Jupiter. I thought you had finished the remaining ones, which is why I posted that. If you want to pass any on, I'll be happy to help. They sure are time consuming. Again, sorry for the lack of communication. --PS2pcGAMER (talk) 19:32, 24 March 2006 (UTC)

  • No problem, I don't normally check the talk page of WP:FPC before acting on noms either, so no need to apologise. But no, I'm treating the 12 as a block and I've added verdicts to them all but I haven't done the extra promotion bits yet. I know I'm being cheeky now but if you'll be cajoled into doing another, could you please perform the rest of the promotion of Wikipedia:Featured_picture_candidates/Anthomyiidae_sp.? Don't add it to the March archive, I'll add the 12 as a block, but the fiddly addition to the FP pages would be helpful :-) Don't worry if you are offline or don't want to do it, I'll simply leave it till last and do it if it isn't done. ~ VeledanTalk 19:42, 24 March 2006 (UTC)
    • I'll be happy to do it. Happy editing! --PS2pcGAMER (talk) 19:48, 24 March 2006 (UTC)
      • Cheers for your help: I think between us the backlog is clear!! :) ~ VeledanTalk 22:08, 24 March 2006 (UTC)

Time zones[edit]

Thanks for the note on my talk page ... I'm copying your comment and my response here:

Hi Engineer Bob. You just deleted the new March 30 section I made to WP:RFD and moved my comment to March 29 to "correct" it. Here in the UK it was March 30th when I made that edit though! I'm not sure if there is a policy or guideline about this but I'm about to move mine back to March 30 and leave yours in March 29 simply so that the section links in our respective contribution histories lead to the right place.. right now you have left mine broken. On the other hand, if we use UTC then both our posts were in the wrong date (yours should be march 30 and mine March 29). If there is an accepted practice that I'm not aware of about what time zone to use for these things, feel free to revert me! Cheers (and night night, I'm off to bed!) ~ VeledanTalk 00:50, 30 March 2006 (UTC)
Never mind, I just came back to put it back under March 29 myself, but someone else has beaten me to it. And I congratulate myself on the above comment for finding the thinnest argument for undoing a change in the history of wikipedia :-) Feel free to remove this section if you like ~ VeledanTalk 05:29, 30 March 2006 (UTC)
The standard is to use UTC -- which is why I moved your post -- but I managed to misread my clock and posted my own nomination under the wrong date! Someone else has placed both of our postings in their correct date sections. Thanks for the feedback. Engineer Bob 07:58, 30 March 2006 (UTC)
Aye, for what it's worth I felt pretty foolish when I thought it over again this morning. I should know better than to think I make sense at 2am! Thanks for putting it right in the first place. ~ VeledanTalk 12:10, 30 March 2006 (UTC)

Wohooo, it's a barnstar![edit]

Hi Veledan. I really appreciate the gesture, it's the little things that keep one motivated! Keep up your good work! If you ever have an idea for an illustriation Wikipedia needs, tell me on my userpage, perhaps I can draw something up. Mstroeck 21:25, 30 March 2006 (UTC)

No problem - it really doesn't matter if it's withdrawn or not, I just aksed (had to leave that typo, reminds me of Futurama... ;-) Greetings, --Janke | Talk 17:11, 6 April 2006 (UTC)

Vatican Hill[edit]

Contrary to your edit to the Vatican disambiguation page, the Vatican Hill is NOT one of the seven hills of Rome. Look at the article Vatican Hill. The very first sentence makes that clear. Michael Hardy 19:52, 11 April 2006 (UTC)

Hi Michael, thanks for putting me right on Vatican Hill. I did read the article of course but I missed that. It's one of those things I was so sure of from of old that I mustn't have taken in the contradiction at all ~ VeledanTalk 20:00, 11 April 2006 (UTC)

Wikipedia:WikiProject Carnivorous plants[edit]

Hi Veledan. I'm glad you're still interested! I've started a Carnivorous plant WikiProject like you suggested. Please feel free to edit the basic format or anything else as you see fit! I'm looking forward to working with you! :) --NoahElhardt 01:34, 14 April 2006 (UTC)

Closing FPs[edit]

Hi Veledan, nice user page photo. Are you going to close any more FPs right now? I can close them if you're not. Let me know, thanks. ~MDD4696 22:10, 23 April 2006 (UTC)

Hiya Mdd4696, thanks :-) Do you mind if I close all the outstanding FP cases? I've written a minibot to help with the job and I'm just culling the last few bugs on the live entries ! Hopefully it'll be OK for general use by tomorrow or Tuesday
Not that I wouldn't mind getting out of having to make the decision on the bear :-). What do you think? ~ VeledanTalk 22:21, 23 April 2006 (UTC)
Well, after looking at all the votes, I think I see 12 in favor out of 16, or 75% support. Dschwen was all over the place heh. Of the support votes, most seem to support the original or the larger crop, with a slight preference for the edit. I'll have to check out the talk page about your bot... I noticed the discussion, but I didn't look into it. Thanks for your good work! ~MDD4696 22:37, 23 April 2006 (UTC)

Closing the POV-ray nom[edit]

Can you please do it tomorrow, since you know the routine? I'm afraid I might botch something...

As the poll clearly shows, the first version is the one to promote (which is fair, too, since it has the same tonal values as the original we voted on in the first place, and it was supported by the creator, User:Gilles_Tran). I have uploaded it to image:povrayglasses2048.png - so, tomorrow you can promote that version, and maybe overwrite the old 800 pixel version with it?

If you're busy, let me know, and I'll handle the "dirty work" of overwriting and/or getting it into the articles. I'd be happy if you'd close the nom, and send the thanks template to Gilles and User:Deadcode, who both did much more for this nom than I ever did... Thanks! --Janke | Talk 19:56, 24 April 2006 (UTC)

Hi Janke. No problem, I'll close the nomination. I didn't vote by the way because I preferred the no.4 ice cube but wasn't confident that I wasn't being foolish :-). Not that it would have made a difference, version 1 is going forward
I'll use my new promotion bot to do the honours anyway. For a few days only, I must be the person who has to put least effort into an FP promotion :-) ~ VeledanTalk 20:16, 24 April 2006 (UTC)
Thanks for closing this. To avoid any misunderstandings, I added this to the archived nomination page: (Just a note: The original image was temporarily ovewritten with # 5 during the poll, but is now overwritten with # 1, the one promoted.) - otherwise someone might think the wrong one got promoted... I also put a speedy tag on my temporary upload image:povrayglasses2048.png. Greetings, --Janke | Talk 05:57, 26 April 2006 (UTC)
My thanks to both of you! I'll make it know to the POV-Ray community that a POV-Ray image is now a Wikipedia featured pic. --Gilles Tran 13:05, 28 April 2006 (UTC)

Parliamentarians --> Parliament of England[edit]

For those in the Civil War period I think that "Parliamentarians --> Roundhead" is a better link than "Parliamentarians --> Parliament of England". --Philip Baird Shearer 23:14, 25 April 2006 (UTC)

  • Hi Philip and thanks for the suggestion. When I started disambiguating the page two weeks ago, I did disambiguate the first few links for English Civil War Parliamentarians to Roundhead exactly as you suggest, but then I went back and changed them to point to Parliament of England. The article Roundhead focuses only on the use of that nickname: it says little or nothing about the people and the cause. Out of all the articles available Parliament of England seemed to me to be the one that would least surprise the reader. I appreciate that if Roundhead were expanded or a specific article created, the links would need disambiguating again. I even considered redlinking them all to Parliamentarian (English Civil War) to indicate the need for the article, but I didn't want to do that without discussion. Finally, if any of the above occurs, I will happily go back and amend the links again myself! ~ VeledanTalk 17:27, 26 April 2006 (UTC)

FPC Closings[edit]

Thanks for closing the FPC nominations. You certainly deserve this barnstar. Raven4x4x 07:49, 28 April 2006 (UTC)

After closing the FPCs for today, my first time doing so since university started, and I noticed on the talk page that you were testing a bot to do them. I probably should have looked before starting, and I hope I didn't interrupt anything important. Anyway, thanks heaps for closing them while I've been occupied; I know it's not the most exciting job of all time but it really does help. Raven4x4x 07:49, 28 April 2006 (UTC)

Re: FPC promotion bot[edit]

I'm on Windows. I can install the pywikipediabot framework if needed, but a compiled version would be easier on my end. Cheers! --PS2pcGAMER (talk) 19:59, 28 April 2006 (UTC)

I've installed python and downloaded the pywikipedia framework, so if you want to just send me the source (or I can wait until you publish it) I can see if I can get it to work. Thanks again. --PS2pcGAMER (talk) 02:05, 1 May 2006 (UTC)

Updating image versions in Feature picture listings[edit]

I'm very confused. Are you saying I should update WP:FP with the new SVG version, add the featured pic template to the SVG version, revert fixing the image on WP:FPC, and on the SVG version, link to the debate for the PNG image? —THIS IS MESSEDOCKER (TALK) 12:28, 30 April 2006 (UTC)

Erm, yes that would fix it! I wasn't actually asking you to do all of that, I just wanted to make you aware of the issues. Basically, when mass fixing images, it would be best to either leave out the wikipedia-namespace FP pages, or to do all of the above so that it doesn't cause problem/confusion later. I (and other FPC regulars) have spent hours and hours during the last two months trying to find historic debates on various FP images prior to opening delisting debates, and occasionally it has been impossible to work out whether an image was promoted or not if the original has been orphaned and deleted, and a new picture has been uploaded with the same title. Thanks for the reply ~ VeledanTalk 12:49, 30 April 2006 (UTC)
Done! —THIS IS MESSEDOCKER (TALK) 17:46, 30 April 2006 (UTC)

I didn't have the utf-8 line in my user configuration, but adding it still didn't solve the problem. Maybe a compiled binary will fix it. --PS2pcGAMER (talk) 00:39, 4 May 2006 (UTC)
I perfectly understand real world contraints. Don't feel presured in any way to get this fixed soon. I've been so busy myself recently that I wouldn't have had the chance to close the noms even if your scripts were working. --PS2pcGAMER (talk) 00:37, 12 May 2006 (UTC)
Can I get the source? I'd like to take a gander and close some noms. WP email will work. -Ravedave 04:47, 12 May 2006 (UTC)
Hi Ravedave, be my guest. You'll need to install the pywikipediabot framework if you haven't already got it. Create two text files in your pywiki folder called promotionbot(or whatever).py and v_MyPage.py, and paste the code from the source page into them. I'd recommend running it in IDLE instead of the default console, but it should work either way (to run in IDLE, right-click promotionbot.py in explorer and choose 'Edit with IDLE'. Then on the window with the code in it, choose from the menu Run-->Run Module). I'll be interested to know if you get a problem. If you do, please give me the error traceback like the last few lines above above. Thanks ~ VeledanTalk 17:30, 12 May 2006 (UTC)
Thanks. If I get a bug i'll try and figure it out, and send it to you if I can't.  :) -Ravedave 18:49, 12 May 2006 (UTC)
I was just doing promotions with it but I'll leave you the rest of the noms - if it doesn't work or if you won't get round to testing it tonight just tell me and I'll finish them off. I'm halfway through promoting the CRT, but feel free to use the script on the others if you get it working. ~ VeledanTalk 18:54, 12 May 2006 (UTC)
That was the last one, the rest are de-listings. :p. I copied the script down and ran the beginning, and it works as far as I ran it. Thanks! -Ravedave 04:56, 13 May 2006 (UTC)
It'll do non-promotions too! Try it out on the next one. I did leave you a couple but someone else finished them off ~ VeledanTalk 06:58, 13 May 2006 (UTC)

India map[edit]

About the picture's candidature being posted across wikiprojects: (I've also CCd it to the FPC) I did it in good faith as I wanted it to be reviewed by all concerned parties concerned, not just WP:FPC. I didn't want a scenario to occur later saying "how could this POV map be featured!?"

Secondly, since you have expressed opposition to the fact that this promotion of the map as a blank one is well, bizzare. True, but considering that this *is* the only NPOV map of India available on the internet is quite an achievement, and I nominated it for that too. Anyways, thanks for explaining your vote. Regards, =Nichalp «Talk»= 13:13, 13 May 2006 (UTC)

Hi Nicholas, that's an impressive collection of barnstars you have there!
I hope I didn't offend you with my comments on the map FPC, and I apologise if I did. I see your point about getting the nomination 'validated' by everyone with an interest in the topic and it's a good argument. It's a pity that as a side effect it has attracted many support votes from inexperienced contributors to FPC who are basically supporting a single issue - the map's (undisputed) accuracy and clarity. That's not enough to make an FP in my opinion, as I explained in my vote.
I'll refrain from adding any reply to your reply unless you want me to, because I feel you deserve to have the last word on the subject!
Anyway, thanks for giving me the chance to respond personally here, and I trust there are no hard feelings. I am genuinely impressed by (and envious about) the volume and quality of your work, including the map!
Cheers, ~ VeledanTalk 15:01, 13 May 2006 (UTC)

FPC[edit]

Hi Veledan, thanks for the compliments :) No, I'm not in anyway offended by your comments and vote. I respect the fact that you brought about legitimate concerns, and you explained the rationale behind the oppose vote. I'm grateful for the well thought out reply, unlike some editors to post vague comments and then refuse to or forget to review it later. On a side note: Could you let me know if this image: Hiranandani Gardens has any featured potential? Regards, =Nichalp «Talk»= 15:22, 14 May 2006 (UTC)

Featured pictures visible restructuring[edit]

What do you think about posting a link to Wikipedia talk:Featured pictures visible#Gallery or split the page? from the Community Portal? Maybe it's too minor an issue to attract broader community input, or maybe it's a rather straightforward decision. But it is a relatively important page, and it seems like we could use more than 4 opinions on the matter. Since you seem to be spearheading the initiative, I thought I'd leave it up to you. -- bcasterlinetalk 22:12, 16 May 2006 (UTC)

I got the same unicode/ascii error, but I worked around it. The 1st time I went to your page & copied the text out using firefox and saved with notepad => error. So I tried editing page source and then pasting directly into python and it worked! If I get bored I'll figure out the exact issue later. -Ravedave 02:57, 20 May 2006 (UTC)

Cool, thanks for testing it and I'm glad it worked! The error you hit at the end is weird, frankly. AttributeError: 'ImagePage' object has no attribute 'usingPages' is just plain wrong — it's referring to class ImagePage in module wikipedia.py, and that class definitely does have a function called usingPages(). I just downloaded the latest version from cvs and checked to make sure it hadn't been renamed. Is your copy of pywikipediabot a recent one? Does wikipedia.py have the line def usingPages(self): under class ImagePage?
Thanks again, good to know someone else got it to work! I hope that'll help me track down the encoding bug PS2 suffered, but I'm not sure how just yet... ~ VeledanTalk 13:10, 21 May 2006 (UTC)
Doesn't v_myPage.py override that? I changed .usingPage to .linkedPages (from v_myPage.py) and it didn't error, but it didn't fix the pages either. Also it looks like v_myPage isnt on the download page anymore. -Ravedave 16:24, 21 May 2006 (UTC)

I've put it back! It doesn't override the relevant part, though. NewFP.mainVersionToReplace objects are instances of wikipedia.ImagePage, which is still derived from the original wikipedia.Page. I do think you must somehow have an error in your wikipedia.py - there is simply no way the error traceback you provided could have derived from a bug in my script. Could you possibly grab a new copy from CVS? (or if you haven't set up the CVS, you could use the 'email this user' link to send me your email address and I'll mail the latest version to you). Alternatively, try saving this tiny script as testImagePage.py or whatever in your wikipediabot folder, and see what comes out:

import wikipedia
site=wikipedia.Site('en')
testImage=wikipedia.ImagePage(site,'Image:Moon merged small.jpg')
try:
    testImage.usingPages
except:
    print 'Your copy of wikipedia.py seems to be missing a definition'
else:
    print '%s is used in %d pages' % (testImage.title(), len(testImage.usingPages()))
wikipedia.stopme()

Thanks for your help, ~ VeledanTalk 15:06, 22 May 2006 (UTC)

I finally got around to running this, and I get the missing definition problem. I downloaded the newest pywiki snapshot from march and I still get it. What am I missing? -Ravedave 02:42, 7 June 2006 (UTC)
Damn, UsingPages() isn't in the snapshot! It's in the cvs copy, but it must be more recent than the snapshot. Sorry. I'll fix it and get right back to you. ~ VeledanTalk 07:24, 10 June 2006 (UTC)

Closing Noms on FPC[edit]

Hi Veledan!
I've recently acquired admin priveliges and I wish to help out with the closing of FPC candidates. I wonder if you could give me a quick crash course since I see you are very experienced in that field. Thanks! --Fir0002 08:15, 17 June 2006 (UTC)

WikiProject Disambiguation Talk Request[edit]

This is a form message being sent to all WikiProject Disambiguation participants. I recently left a proposed banner idea on the WikiProject Disambiguation talk page and I would appreciate any input you could provide. Before it can be approved or denied, I would prefer a lot of feedback from multiple participants in the project. So if you have the time please join in the discussion to help improve the WikiProject. Keep up the good work in link repair and thanks for your time. Nehrams2020 21:46, 9 October 2006 (UTC)

School Of Athens[edit]

Hi there, wondering if you can help me. My company is trying to find out exactly what the copyright laws are on the picture posted at http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia:Featured_picture_candidates/The_School_of_Athens . We want to recreate jsut the building design, with no people, paintings or anything jsut a the basic concept in 2-D and eventually in 3-D. My direct email is kevinchly@bcgroup.net if you can please point me in the right direction. You seem to be quite knowledgeable about this subject.

Orphaned fair use image (Image:Electronic intifada logo.gif)[edit]

Thanks for uploading Image:Electronic intifada logo.gif. The image description page currently specifies that the image is non-free and may only be used on Wikipedia under a claim of fair use. However, the image is currently orphaned, meaning that it is not used in any articles on Wikipedia. If the image was previously in an article, please go to the article and see why it was removed. You may add it back if you think that that will be useful. However, please note that images for which a replacement could be created are not acceptable under fair use (see our fair use policy).

If you have uploaded other unlicensed media, please check whether they're used in any articles or not. You can find a list of 'image' pages you have edited by clicking on the "my contributions" link (it is located at the very top of any Wikipedia page when you are logged in), and then selecting "Image" from the dropdown box. Note that any fair use images not used in any articles will be deleted after seven days, as described on criteria for speedy deletion. Thank you. BetacommandBot 19:44, 10 May 2007 (UTC)
