WikiProject Software Announcement

[edit]
Announcement
  • Software Wikia is a wiki specialised on software using semantic extras. If a nice article does not have the required Wikipedia:Notability, simply export it and ask an admin for an import there.
  • WikiProject Free Software is now merged with WikiProject Software. The link to WikiProject Free Software is Wikipedia:WikiProject Software/Free Software.
  • To better serve Wikipedia, WikiProject Malware is now under the parent of WikiProject Computer Security. All Malware articles are currently being transferred over to the new project. In any case, you are welcome to join at WikiProject Computer Security!
  • All members of WikiProject Software are urged to install the Centralized Announcement System on their talk page.
  • I have changed the participant (members) table by replacing the Task column with Area of Expertise. I also introduced a new template based status system so as to "arrange" the members according to whether they are active, semi-active, inactive, or retired. Please update your entry accordingly.
  • New IRC server! The old channel on Freenode is not used anymore. See See here. Manual for using IRC can be found here for why. Find us at:
Server host irc.libera.chat

Adopt

[edit]
Congratulations!
Congratulations on your recent adoption, 10014derek, and welcome to Wikipedia! I saw that you have expressed an interest in being adopted by an experienced editor. Being an experienced editor myself, I accepted your request. Whether you want to learn about wiki markup, find something to do, or just talk to somebody, I'm the person to see about it - just leave a message on my talk page. Remember, I am willing to help you and make your time here more enjoyable. Feel free to ask me any questions you might have, and remember to "be BOLD!"- I'm here to help you; no question is a stupid one. In the mean time, here are some pages that you might find helpful, in case you haven't already gotten the official welcoming:

I hope you enjoy editing here and being a Wikipedian! Please sign your name on talk pages using four tildes (~~~~); this will automatically produce your name and the date. Removing warnings on your User talk page

[edit]

While there's no policy against removing warnings, it's discouraged and often viewed as uncivil, like you're trying to hide something. Essentially, your User page is yours to do with what you will (within reason, of course), but your User talk page is more for other users to contact you and to catalogue your behavior (both good and bad) on Wikipedia. Wyatt Riot 16:27, 28 September 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Actually, in Wikipedia guidelines state that there is no problem removing warnings, while removing them is actually confirming that you have read them. But Wyatt Riot has a point about people may or may not thing you are trying to hide them, although noting is ever really "deleted" as it is always available to see in any pages' edit history. - Rjd0060 15:07, 29 September 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Help me

[edit]

{{helpme}} I need help with copyright information. I am still unsure how to add licenses which will 'please' the bots on Wikipedia. (of course, they have to be real...)

Hello, Derek. When you upload an image, there should be a drop-down menu for you to select an appropriate licensing tag from. If you can't find the specific tag you're looking for there, WP:TAGS has the complete list, with explanations of what they are to be used for. Any images created by you should be released into the public domain or freely licensed; any images you get elsewhere are probably copyrighted and need an appropriate fair use tag as well as an appropriate rationale. I've set up a tutorial for my adoptee on this here, which you're welcome to read over. If you still need help, feel free to put up another helpme tag, or ask me or your adopter for more information on our talk pages. Happy editing! I'm not sure how to change your signature. I see many people who have customized their signature so it glitters and stuff like that. How do you do that? Pls help!!!!

You can change your signature by clicking "my preferences" at the top of the page. For signature guidelines, please visit WP:SIGNATURE. - Rjd0060 15:03, 29 September 2007 (UTC)[reply]

{{helpme}}

I've found a page which has been copied directly from a website. What should I do, and how do I tell the user what he/she has done wrong?

Hello again. If it's a direct copy, then you can follow these steps:
  1. Check the history to make sure there is no non-copyvio (copyright violating) version that can be reverted to. If there is, revert to it and you're done (although you could warn the editor who added the content with {{uw-copyvio}}. If not...
  2. Check the website to make sure it's not a public domain or freely licensed site. If it is, make a note about that on the talk page and you're done. If not...
  3. Check the article and talk page for some assertion of permission. If there is an assertion but you still question it, bring up the issue at Wikipedia talk:Copyright problems and they'll be able to help you out. If the assertion seems pretty clear and valid, don't worry about it. If there isn't one, do one of these:
    1. If it's really obviously copied from a single website, add the template {{db-copyvio|enter web url here}} to the top of the copied article. That template will produce a speedy deletion notice that will alert administrators to the problem, as well as give you the code for a warning message to give to the user.
    2. If it's not quite blatant, but perhaps copies text from several different sites, you can blank the page and replace the entire text of the article with {{copyvio}}. Then go here and add * {{subst:article-cv | PageName}} from [insert URL here] ~~~~ to the bottom of the list. The text under "Maintenance use only" on the big template you placed on the article can then be used to warn the editor who added the content.
For more information, you can go to WP:CP for a more detailed version of these directions. I hope this helps! Hersfold (t/a/c) 15:30, 23 October 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Is there a bot which shows whether you are online or not? I know there is some sort of bot like that but according to its page, it is currently disabled due to a malfunction. Please help!!!!!

There is a status bot in trial (Wikipedia:Bots/Requests for approval/Chris G Bot 3) - but it is somewhat temperamental at the moment. Hopefully User:StatusBot will be back up soon, and then you can use that again. The new bot will use the same structure as StatusBot, so by signing up for Statusbot, you should be able to get this to work. :-) Stwalkerster talk 10:39, 25 October 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Orphaned non-free media (Image:Maslogo4.gif)

[edit]

Thanks for uploading Image:Maslogo4.gif. The media description page currently specifies that it is non-free and may only be used on Wikipedia under a claim of fair use. However, it is currently orphaned, meaning that it is not used in any articles on Wikipedia. If the media was previously in an article, please go to the article and see why it was removed. You may add it back if you think that that will be useful. However, please note that media for which a replacement could be created are not acceptable for use on Wikipedia (see our policy for non-free media).

If you have uploaded other unlicensed media, please check whether they're used in any articles or not. You can find a list of 'image' pages you have edited by clicking on the "my contributions" link (it is located at the very top of any Wikipedia page when you are logged in), and then selecting "Image" from the dropdown box. Note that all non-free media not used in any articles will be deleted after seven days, as described on criteria for speedy deletion. Thank you. BetacommandBot 23:22, 11 October 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Disputed fair use rationale for Image:Union square.gif

[edit]

Thanks for uploading Image:Union square.gif. However, there is a concern that the rationale you have provided for using this image under "fair use" may be invalid. Please read the instructions at Wikipedia:Non-free content carefully, then go to the image description page and clarify why you think the image qualifies for fair use. Using one of the templates at Wikipedia:Fair use rationale guideline is an easy way to ensure that your image is in compliance with Wikipedia policy, but remember that you must complete the template. Do not simply insert a blank template on an image page.

If it is determined that the image does not qualify under fair use, it will be deleted within a couple of days according to our criteria for speedy deletion. If you have any questions please ask them at the media copyright questions page. Thank you.BetacommandBot 16:03, 24 October 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Unspecified source for Image:Googleburn.jpg

[edit]

Thanks for uploading Image:Googleburn.jpg. I noticed that the file's description page currently doesn't specify who created the content, so the copyright status is unclear. If you did not create this file yourself, then you will need to specify the owner of the copyright. If you obtained it from a website, then a link to the website from which it was taken, together with a restatement of that website's terms of use of its content, is usually sufficient information. However, if the copyright holder is different from the website's publisher, then their copyright should also be acknowledged.

As well as adding the source, please add a proper copyright licensing tag if the file doesn't have one already. If you created/took the picture, audio, or video then the {{GFDL-self}} tag can be used to release it under the GFDL. If you believe the media meets the criteria at Wikipedia:Fair use, use a tag such as {{non-free fair use in|article name}} or one of the other tags listed at Wikipedia:Image copyright tags#Fair use. See Wikipedia:Image copyright tags for the full list of copyright tags that you can use.

If you have uploaded other files, consider checking that you have specified their source and tagged them, too. You can find a list of files you have uploaded by following this link. Unsourced and untagged images may be deleted one week after they have been tagged, as described on criteria for speedy deletion. If the image is copyrighted under a non-free license (per Wikipedia:Fair use) then the image will be deleted 48 hours after 00:24, 5 February 2008 (UTC). If you have any questions please ask them at the Media copyright questions page. Thank you. Rockfang (talk) 00:24, 5 February 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Possibly unfree Image:Googleburn.jpg

[edit]

An image that you uploaded or altered, Image:Googleburn.jpg, has been listed at Wikipedia:Possibly unfree images because its copyright status is disputed. If the image's copyright status cannot be verified, it may be deleted. You may find more information on the image description page. You are welcome to add comments to its entry at the discussion if you are interested in it not being deleted. Thank you. Rockfang (talk) 00:27, 5 February 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks for uploading Image:Kota kinabalu peak.jpg. The image has been identified as not specifying the copyright status of the image, which is required by Wikipedia's policy on images. Even if you created the image yourself, you still need to release it so Wikipedia can use it. If you don't indicate the copyright status of the image on the image's description page, using an appropriate copyright tag, it may be deleted some time in the next seven days. If you made this image yourself, you can use copyright tags like {{PD-self}} (to release all rights), {{self|CC-by-sa-3.0|GFDL}} (to require that you be credited), or any tag here - just go to the image, click edit, and add one of those. If you have uploaded other images, please verify that you have provided copyright information for them as well.

[edit]

Sorry about the long-due reply, I just saw your message gathering cobwebs on my talk page...

Actually, I didn't create any of those icons, as much as I wish I had; I just put all the ones I knew of on one page for easy access (not nearly as impressive, I know). However, I could probably replicate some if I tried. I think they were created in GIMP, if that helps any... Cheers! Master of Puppets Call me MoP! :) 21:43, 2 September 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Replaceable fair use File:Samsung X360.jpg

[edit]

Thanks for uploading File:Samsung X360.jpg. I noticed the description page specifies that the media is being used under a claim of fair use, but its use in Wikipedia articles fails our first non-free content criterion in that it illustrates a subject for which a freely licensed media could reasonably be found or created that provides substantially the same information. If you believe this media is not replaceable, please:

  1. Go to the media description page and edit it to add {{di-replaceable fair use disputed}}, without deleting the original replaceable fair use template.

Notification of automated file description generation

[edit]

Your upload of File:Aiport Express from Elements.JPG or contribution to its description is noted, and thanks (even if belatedly) for your contribution. In order to help make better use of the media, an attempt has been made by an automated process to identify and add certain information to the media's description page.

This notification is placed on your talk page because a bot has identified you either as the uploader of the file, or as a contributor to its metadata. It would be appreciated if you could carefully review the information the bot added. To opt out of these notifications, please follow the instructions here. Thanks! The article Eden Foundation has been proposed for deletion because of the following concern:

non notable organization, running one small project.

While all constructive contributions to Wikipedia are appreciated, content or articles may be deleted for any of several reasons.

You may prevent the proposed deletion by removing the {{proposed deletion/dated}} notice, but please explain why in your edit summary or on the article's talk page.

Please consider improving the article to address the issues raised. Removing {{proposed deletion/dated}} will stop the proposed deletion process, but other deletion processes exist. In particular, the speedy deletion process can result in deletion without discussion, and articles for deletion allows discussion to reach consensus for deletion. DGG ( talk ) 01:15, 19 May 2014 (UTC)[reply]

If this is the first article that you have created, you may want to read the guide to writing your first article.

You may want to consider using the Article Wizard to help you create articles.

A tag has been placed on Eden Foundation requesting that it be speedily deleted from Wikipedia. This has been done under section G12 of the criteria for speedy deletion, because the article or image appears to be a clear copyright infringement. This article or image appears to be a direct copy from organization's website. For legal reasons, we cannot accept copyrighted text or images borrowed from other web sites or printed material, and as a consequence, your addition will most likely be deleted. You may use external websites as a source of information, but not as a source of sentences. This part is crucial: say it in your own words. Wikipedia takes copyright violations very seriously and persistent violators will be blocked from editing.

If the external website or image belongs to you, and you want to allow Wikipedia to use the text or image — which means allowing other people to modify it — then you must verify that externally by one of the processes explained at Wikipedia:Donating copyrighted materials. If you are not the owner of the external website or image but have permission from that owner, see Wikipedia:Requesting copyright permission. You might want to look at Wikipedia's policies and guidelines for more details, or ask a question here.

If you think this page should not be deleted for this reason, you may contest the nomination by visiting the page and clicking the button labelled "Click here to contest this speedy deletion". This will give you the opportunity to explain why you believe the page should not be deleted. However, be aware that once a page is tagged for speedy deletion, it may be removed without delay. Please do not remove the speedy deletion tag from the page yourself, but do not hesitate to add information in line with Wikipedia's policies and guidelines. Hi,
You appear to be eligible to vote in the current Arbitration Committee election. The Arbitration Committee is the panel of editors responsible for conducting the Wikipedia arbitration process. It has the authority to enact binding solutions for disputes between editors, primarily related to serious behavioural issues that the community has been unable to resolve. This includes the ability to impose site bans, topic bans, editing restrictions, and other measures needed to maintain our editing environment. The arbitration policy describes the Committee's roles and responsibilities in greater detail. If you wish to participate, you are welcome to review the candidates' statements and submit your choices on the voting page.
