Welcome to Wikipedia!

Hello IP user. Welcome to Wikipedia and thank you for your contributions!

I'm Walter Görlitz, one of the other editors here, and I hope you decide to stay and help contribute to this amazing repository of knowledge. Although you're free to perform most tasks on Wikipedia without registering, it's highly recommended you create an account as there are many added benefits. It's private and secure and it's also free, simple, and quick to do.

Some pages of helpful information to get you started:
  Introduction to Wikipedia
  The five pillars of Wikipedia
  Editing tutorial
  How to edit a page
  Simplified Manual of Style
  The basics of Wikicode
  How to develop an article
  How to create an article
  Help pages
  What Wikipedia is not
Some common sense Dos and Don'ts:
  Do be bold
  Do assume good faith
  Do be civil
  Do keep cool!
Do maintain a neutral point of view
  Don't spam
  Don't infringe copyright
Don't edit where you have a conflict of interest
  Don't commit vandalism

If you need further help, you can:

or you can:
  Get help at the Teahouse
or even:
Ask an experienced editor to "adopt" you

Alternatively, leave me a message at my talk page or type {{helpme}} here on your talk page and someone will try to help.

There are many ways you can contribute to Wikipedia. Here are a few ideas:
  Fight vandalism
Be a WikiFairy or a WikiGnome
  Help contribute to articles
  Perform maintenance tasks

Become a member of a project that interests you
  Help design new templates
Subscribe and contribute to The Signpost

To get some practice editing you can use a sandbox. If you register an account, you can create your own personal sandbox for use any time. It's perfect for working on bigger projects. Then for easy access in the future, you could put a link to it on your user page.

Please remember to:

  • Always sign your posts on talk pages. You can do this either by clicking on the button on the edit toolbar or by typing four tildes ~~~~ at the end of your post. This will automatically insert your IP address linked to your contributions page (however, if you create an account, your IP address will be hidden and you will be able to build a custom signature that can link to your own user page), a link to this IP's talk page, and a timestamp.
  • Leave descriptive edit summaries for your edits. Doing so helps other editors understand what changes you have made and why you made them.
The best way to learn about something is to experience it. Explore, learn, contribute, and don't forget to have some fun!

Help me![edit]

Dear Wikipedia,

I am a music artist and a public figure in the Christian and CCM music world. It was recently brought to my attention at a Canadian college visit where I was teaching a class on songwriting that my date of birth was listed on my Wikipedia page as being in 1980. The reality (unfortunately :) ) is that I am older than this and was born in 1976. I have a birth certificate and passport to prove this. Everything else on my wikipedia page is accurate and well sourced. Please let me know how this mistake can be fixed to avoid confusion in the future. Thanks so much! Regards, Matt Brouwer

The problem is that we need a reliable source to support the claim. An anonymous source from Montgomery, Texas doesn't cut it any more than the claim from a registered editor, Northpoint777 (talk · contribs). I removed it since it was clearly wrong and now it definitely needs a reliable source to support the claim. Having biographic data in an article isn't a requirement and WP:BLPPRIVACY is the reason why. Walter Görlitz (talk) 15:45, 2 October 2018 (UTC)[reply]
And as a matter of fact, why don't you add your date of birth to the bio section of your official website? We could use that to source your date of birth in our article as per WP:ABOUTSELF. 78.28.54.132 (talk) 15:54, 2 October 2018 (UTC)[reply]
That seems to me the best way of dealing with this. The editor who uses the pseudonym "JamesBWatson" (talk) 16:24, 2 October 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Ok, thanks for the suggestion. I have added the info to 'bio' on my website. (link below) Date of birth can be found in the 2nd line of the 3rd paragraph. If it's possible to update this on Wikipedia, I would appreciate it as I stated earlier, it will help. Thanks so much! -M https://www.mattbrouwer.com/bio

Information icon Please do not add or change content, as you did at Matt Brouwer, without citing a reliable source. Please review the guidelines at Wikipedia:Citing sources and take this opportunity to add references to the article. I'm assuming you're the same editor as Northpoint777 (talk · contribs) and that editor was warned about this earlier today. Walter Görlitz (talk) 15:36, 2 October 2018 (UTC)[reply]

If this is a shared IP address, and you did not make the edits, consider creating an account for yourself or logging in with an existing account so you can avoid further irrelevant notices.

Please stop removing maintenance templates from pages on Wikipedia, as you did to Matt Brouwer, without resolving the problem that the template refers to. This may be considered disruptive editing. Further edits of this type may result in your account being blocked from editing. Walter Görlitz (talk) 01:52, 3 October 2018 (UTC)[reply]
