I have read the message you sent me about the picture in this article, you changed it from John Cena to Kurt Angle, but your message implied that I changed it, if your going to tell someone something like that, please make sure you know who got it wrong, I didn't do that. I deleted Grawp's edit summaries from his most recent spree of page-move vandalism and deleted some of the more charming moves from the log. Taken out of context that could be worrying! Though I have noted you pop up suddenly when I was in odd places on the Outer Rim of the Wikiverse.

  • Have to discuss your equipment(!). My 'Broadband' Unwired net interface (256 'KB' must be kilobits) is so slow I sometime need 6-10 seconds just to update a page! So my 'real-time' vandal whacking is somewhat limited. Often I am removing Unsourced/POV/Unintelligible stuff from Indian('subcontinent') related articles, via my Special:Log/newusers 'patrolling'. The 'vandals' I run into don't seem the vindictive sort, more misguided 'one off' or noob editors. Anyhow what sort of net connection do you have Giga Byte?
  • A series of seemingly co-ordinated edits at Harry Judd and Danny Jones got my attention though. Thought that might have repercussions. AFAIR HellYeahEdit‎ (talk · contribs) is what caught my eye. Vandals have no imagination! That sort of name to me just screams vandal, and I was right! And JessicaMCFLYx (talk · contribs)? (of Back to the Future) too. May be worthy of blocking as VOAs?
  • See Soxrox45 (talk · contribs) too, falsely claims roll-back rights. First (15 October 2008) and last (31 May 2010) edits were vandalism. Possible 'sleeper' account, or just a 'dill'! Ah yes, did this when Bronwyn Bancroft was on the MP. Definitely worth a ban just for that IMHO!

Wait, you're discussing the equipment of a guy on the other side of the planet who stalks you obsessively? I feel your pain with regard to slow internet though, this month all the schoolkids are out on winter break (no doubt watching hours of music videos and using facebook and google maps, from my experience working with tech in schools- they don't even play Runescape anymore!) so my internet's taken up to five minutes to load a static page, let alone something like my email or watchlist! You seem pretty good at spotting socks, maybe clerking at WP:SPI would be something that you'd be good at... if you had an account. (p.s. I stalk you obsessively too. (edit conflict × Aaargh!) Yes double entendres come fast around Wikipedia! I have (far?) less than 30 'watchers', but HJ has 154 ! My internet always seems 'slow' though at some times, like 5am it seems to speed up. Haven't noticed any 'school holiday' effect, yet. I also usually have several browser windows with several tabs open simultaneously, ie article/talkpage/edit history.
  • I use Unwired, what do you have? (I get 256 Kb/s(?) and 12 Gb per month! (up from 9 Gb when I got it in June 2009) for A$29.95 per month) Though I haven't used up more than 7.541 Gb. Less capacity, more speed would suit me!

I have less than 30 watchers too, the orange new messages bar is quite a novelty for me (here, anyway- all the other wikipedias email me when I have a new message, and it gets old very quickly...) I use Ihug, they're more reliable and helpful than Telecom despite the lack of frills. I forgot how much we get, I'll check and get back to you. But I do know I had to double it this month because I hit the cap. (working at school= my holidays too, and I'm bored!) Our internet is usually a good deal faster though, living in central Auckland and all, the fastest it gets is 48Mbps. Do you live in a central urban area? ( And yep, the section break looks fine. You know I started my last reply soon after I got it, then EC with Davtra, but it still took me ages (+60 mins??!) Obviously you 'kids' do lots of typing at school? I need to be far less picky/fiddly and not preview (s-l-o-w-l-y) so often, methinks!
Whois currently has me in Coffs Harbour!, actually in Sydneys suburbs, which may help my speed as Unwired is literally a wireless connection. Thought of faster 'plan' but costs much more and heard it doesn't go as fast as it should. Still cheaper/faster than what I paid for a 56k AOL dial up plan in about 2000-01 ≈A$50 I think.

Well, I went off and checked my package (and held off commenting until you finished :P), and it's unlimited speed but only 5GB. Which is enough for me, and it's fast enough (because of the way "unlimited" works, it can be ridiculously fast or veery slow when lots of people are utilising it). As for preview- I do it too, but I use a dinky javascript in my vector.js that allows me to preview without reloading the page! Pretty handy for OCD like mine (reason #5,642 why you should get an account). But yes, I do a lot of typing on a daily basis, so I type at about 60-70wpm. Dialup? Had that until two years ago. It certainly is good value. I think it's one of the best plans in Australia. In regards to your question, no, I don't use it all, and that got me thinking... I paid for 50 GB, so I should use it all. Not really! Born in NZ, moved to the UK as a teenager (first England, then Scotland), returned home for several years to catch up with relatives, then returned to Scotland. Thanks to the Internet (heh! I'm on topic for this thread!) I can work pretty much anywhere. I'd imagine I'll return to NZ at some point, and - you'll be pleased to know - I'm giving serious thought to Oz as well (relatives there, too, and Julia Gillard is better than John Key from a having-to-see-a-politician's-mug-on-TV-everynight-perspective...) No EU citizenship :-( I did qualify for UK citizenship (and all the EU-loveliness that that would bring) but that was before my most recent stint back home. I don't seem to have any problems travelling in Europe, and my UK visa lets me live and work in the UK (but not in the rest of the EU), so I've not been too bothered. I didn't know IPs could have userpages actually until 220 proved me wrong! I think they can create talk pages in any "[X] talk" namespace, so 220 should be able to create User talk:220.101.28.25/Archive 1. Or I could use my magical admin powers to move the whole damn lot there and leave you with a non-existent talk page to start from scratch. Loving the new, streamlined talkpage! I'm wondering whether an archiving bot would work here? I'd normally recommend MiszaBot (since I had no luck with archiving until I discovered the joys of MiszaBot...) but apparently MiszaBot is no longer being maintained, so I suspect my own luvverley archiving is going to break sooner or later. I'd suggest ClueBot III: I had no luck with ClueBot, but my very lazy, very selfish view is: if you can get ClueBot to work, then I can get you to make ClueBot archive my talkpage ;-) TFOWR 08:41, 19 July 2010 (UTC)

You're up online early. That's a new outdent syntax I haven't seen too! {{outdent|#}} (#=no of indents) works the same. Where are all these codes available? (I keep asking!), or is it pretty 'standard' betweeen wikis? Don't know about bot archiving, & HJ did it without telling me, just after I created the subpages. They are all sub "User talk:username/page" but, not sub "username/page" as is usual. Can the bots archive to any page? (And while we compare magick spelles the trolls and vandals play!) Real-life commitments - late to bed, early to rise! Good for Wikipedia, good for my coffee supplier, not so good for me ;-) I don't know if there's a complete list anywhere, and the {{outdent|::::}} syntax is fairly new for me, too (I've known about outdent for ages, but never realised you could actually specify the outdentiness of it). How I normally work it out is by following links - when I see {{outdent}} I click on it to see what fancy tricks it can do (the doco normally being quite good - I can read template code, just about, but I read English far better!) I prefer {{outdent|::::}} to {{outdent|4}} because it means I can just copy and paste the string of colons from the previous poster's comment ;-) I'm big on laziness! TFOWR 09:23, 19 July 2010 (UTC)

I get those emoticons using a script that adds them to the editing toolbar. (Scripts are plentiful and awesome! You need to get an account, to use them all!) I do usually use {{User talk:220.101.28.25/Archive 2}} though. How'd you get an LCD for nothing? I've got a few old computer parts lying around that I got for free, but nothing that can handle more than Win98. I've never seen that movie. Would you recommend it...? Literally found the LCD on the side of the road! What I call "Junk Swapping Day/s", formally known as "Council Cleanup", when you put out unwanted furniture, electrical goods, clothes etc for collection. My computer desk came the same! I'm using a 1 Gb memory SIMM and DVD drive that were also thrown out. I have heaps of PC motherboards, cards, software inc. Windows '98/Office and games etc! Amazing what people throw out! (And they often don't wipe their hard drives either!) If I need something, I often find what I'm after for free!

  • Speaking of reading 1984, about 2 months ago I found a brand new, in box c/w accessories, Sony PRS-500 electronic book reader! 1984 was one of several E-books included with it!
  • Highly recommend The Mummy (Brendan Fraser version), (sorry I've 'spoiled' that line!)
  • Think a warning is likely/possible? Though I take your point, I think 'productive' editors like us would have to push it pretty far to upset people. I saw some 'newbie' accounts banned, but they were writing in non-English and using it like a mailbox/chatroom, can't really see why anyone would bother after all Hotmail/ G-mail etc. is free! Why I need to avoid gasbagging is, I take so b!@@dy long to get my reply out! ie. One hour! The Trolls and Vandals are aboot!

Wow! I got my desk and chair from the local school's offcasts, and they're made of good native wood, which is fantastic. Needed a good sanding and repaint, but that was all. But it seems otherwise that people around your area are more generous (or throw things away more easily) than us Aucklanders! Not wiping hard drives, pretty common. It's highly interesting, stuff you can get from other people's drives (though with pen drives you have to be more careful for viruses!) Re myspacing: I'm productive? Since when? Well, I've seen users with far more content work than I get cautioned for oversocialising. And besides, I want your email. Hmm, I've taken a while on this reply too, haven't I? OMG! ace.wiki seems to be a 'regional' ie. Aceh Wikipedia is that right? 'Fark!' Sounds like on-line Jihad to me! (Caught me unawares there, I was answering TFOWR in thread above.) Yeh, people throw out old good wood, and buy chipboard crap! Saw a nice wood expandable dining table put out a few months ago, hope it found a new home. If chipboard furniture gets rained on, it basically falls apart! Shameful. Lots of flats around here, and probably fairly affluent, in parts! Haven't found a thumb drive, yet. So apparently the four most active users communicate by phone, off-wiki, since it is in a way a "regional" Wikipedia. I fail to understand how they can think that using sysop status on Wikipedia to boycott Wikipedia makes any sense at all; however, I feel a bit of regret that it had to turn out with all active sysops desysoped. It kind of gives the impression that us English-speaking "Westerners" are going to tread all over their Wikipedia's culture without a further thought- but what else could we have done? (I have that scavenger instinct. Picked some jewellery off the ground a couple of weeks back- it was gold, I later found out. I love garage sales and school fundraisers- you get amazing clothes and books and appliances there. Heaters- I've got two oil fin heaters I picked up for $5 at one of those! Well, it's back to work for me, so I've been on very sporadically- one or two edits and then off again. :( The next few months have quite a few deadlines and papers due, so I actually need a good kicking if I'm on-wiki :P ) ace.wiki: I really don't know what I think. Behaviour was unacceptable, but shutting it down would be the trigger for a real chilling effect towards all the other Muslim-area-language Wikipedias and to a certain extent the other small wikipedias. I have my own section- how special! I've seen both Shrek Forever After (incredibly weird, they took the plot far too far to make it extraordinary and ended up with a really predictable basic storyline anyway) and Toy Story 3 (absolutely brilliant. See it. ), but I'm not really interested in watching Karate Kid. (Not that I was particularly into either Shrek or Toy Story, but my li'l siblings wanted their big sis to hang out with them over the holidays. And I ended up enjoying the latter more than either of them, I reckon, given that I actually existed before the first Toy Story was made!) As for DiCaprio: meh. He doesn't really appeal to me at all, actually. (Come to think of it, I couldn't name an actor that does- I don't watch enough television/movies. A (part-Asian) girl I know was complaining about her school's hair colour policy; it allows for dyes as long as they're "natural colors". She'd dyed her hair a dark pink and was insisting it was red, and thus natural. *headdesk* As for Keira (lovely name)... I'm kinda unusual in that I think women look, well, more like women with fuller figures; it's somewhat ironic as I'm a tiny four foot ten! Uh, well, yeah. But surely that's enough time (and actually, common sense would tell you) to know not to go off into a rant like that on a reader. WN is one of the sites where the public can interact with the community without de facto becoming part of it, and it's immensely important that the readers get the right idea. I saw the thing with HJ, wanted to comment but got 8 edit conflicts in a row and gave up...! (And apparently Jimbo disagrees with Delicious carbuncle's holiday! More drama!) Sure, feel free to borrow {{W-FAQ}}- I think it needs more use :) The only fire that got to my talk was a minor piece of socking by ole "I dropped the soap", which wasn't a big deal at all- Davtra, you've had an interesting little block of time with that orange bar haven't you? Hi Sonia. (You're up late/early!) It is good that Turtlestack apologised. We don't know what was happening with them so I assume a temporary loss of civility. As it seemed out of character for them perhaps something bad is occurring maybe? One WP editor I know of, their mother died in the last few days. Things like that can be happening and we never hear. I know there have been times when a fairly innocuous comment has lit my fuse!

Sonia, you'll come to realise that WN is a bit dysfuntional. Most (not all, but most) of its editors are washed-up local rag journalists or Wikipedians who are either bored or know it's the only English-speaking project they'll ever get admin rights on. It's falling apart at the minute with a lot of very well respected editors (there are only a few dozen active editors anyway) leaving and others who are mentally unstable and driving away contributors. Not to mention that people would rather edit war with someone trying to make the style guide look less like it was written by a 12 year old instead of writing articles that Wikipedia has already written and got onto the Main Page! 220.101: No, just online early. I've had a grand total of 18 hours of sleep in the last week, I think. Yes, compassion is always needed- it's a bit hard because we're all just faceless, voiceless lines of text. I tend to AGF too much, though, according to some... "I dropped the soap" is the username theme of a silly ring of wannabe socks. Meh. (Fetchcomms is a regular editor at WN  completely different kettle of fish.)
@HJ: Wow, big piece of invective- and reading through the RfDA I can understand why. I really do feel sorry for the project as a whole, but I can't say (as a bystander, no doubt I don't know the full story) that I agree completely with either your sentiment or your actions there.
It's a common issue to many small projects, in that they need all the editors they can get and are torn between retaining all the current ones (which might drive away new users) or giving them the boot and going hungry for a while. Sometimes it's really hard. The other thing, of course, is that these little projects (especially the English-language ones!) are always going to have a bit of identity crisis, a niggling "why do we exist?- enwiki is so much bigger, so much more successful, covers so much of our material in its own way. What's the point?" And as long as they continue to be compared in that way, things aren't going to get much better; there's a completely different dynamic to each project and the dynamic on smaller projects changes far more quickly as people come and go because any one person can influence the mood of the project so very much.
Newcomers who are policy-wonkers are also not a good thing. What makes the smaller projects work at first (as enwiki used to) is that anarchy, that IAR spirit and if we spend too much time not_building_the_project but arguing over wording of policies (better still, wheel-warring!), then we've missed the point. The main stumbling block is that "enwiki does this, so should we" in these cases... which I guess is what you said above, the project getting more important than its goals.
I suppose we are all here not just to build an encyclopedia/dictionary/news site but we must have some personal interest of our own. I started with the excitement that a nobody like me could contribute my tuppence to the world's biggest encyclopedia, a desire for a five minutes of fame if you like; now it's morphed into a passion for the people, for the awesome community that makes this place happen. People absolutely fascinate me. There's my motivation- and if the motivations of the individuals of a small project are "it'll be easy to get adminship here", then we're screwed because these are the kind who, honestly, should not be let anywhere near the bit. I'm sure mine are not the most noble of motives, but I'm sincere about them and they are something I can say on-wiki. When the contributors are all vested and nobody's cards are on the table, it's a very dicey game we've got into.

A project is in serious trouble when "news" articles have to wait so long to be published that they cease to be news, despite there being multiple reviewers and admins online. Then I publish an article that's slightly below some arbitrary standard and I'm hanged for it! It amuses me that, on here, we managed to get an article written, nominated and onto ITN before anyone had even thought about it on WN- and people wonder why Wikipedia is usually in the top 5 Google News results for ongoing events when WN is nowhere to be seen! At least on Commons being a respected editor on another wMF project counts for something, but on WN, there seems to be a collective dislike of Wikipedians! What's simple like? 220.101...huh? Really sorry about offloading all that onto your talk page, by the way. HJ: Yes, I noticed that while tagging a couple of articles for speedy deletion (I have a copyvio radar, but those were really blatant) and it took quite a long while to get them deleted. Today I copyedited an article with appalling typos, and it took over half an hour to get reviewed... I think the thing is that while WN is a time-sensitive project by nature, we're much more aware of time constraints here- ironic as that is. Simple? It's great, but somewhat depressing at times. Thing is, we get an influx of cross-project sockers and permabanned enwikipedians, but less users come from here of the constructive kind. And of course there's always the anonymous commenters "Simple English sucks. Go to the real Wikipedia, it's much better.", which obviously is a bit of a slap to the face for us. But because we need all the contributors we can get (and because things are often like a small-scale version of enwiki), we welcome everyone with open arms. Honestly, we're so short of users (well, users who write) that DYK is seldom updated on time, even though any article that's not a VGA (FA) can be nominated. The community is a bit conflicted, because one troublesome user (or better still, multiple admins/crats duking it out) can -and do, on a regular basis- cause a right trainwreck. However, as a whole I think we're one of the more stable and productive of the small wikis, despite the terrible reputation Simple English has in the Wikimedia community in general. It's not a "real language", sure, but I think it is a very useful complement to this Wikipedia especially for complex mathematical concepts. The only issue is that in the interlanguage bar down the side, it's listed all the way down under "s" as "Simple English". It reminds me of commons, but at least when I need a Commons admin, I can post on their admin board and I get some respect for being an enwiki admin, whereas on WN it feels like a badge of shame! A Yamaha keyboard? I have an Electone. (Man, that article needs cleanup.) It's great fun to mess around with synthesising effects and such-like, but nothing beats the sound and feel of a real piano! (I own an antique upright which I got for under market value, it's a beautiful mahogany with ivory keys. My most expensive possession by far. During the week I'm one of the lucky few to have access to a Steinway grand, which is also awesome.) Paid? Somewhat, a step above busking I supose. Just a thing I do when I need cash because all I have to do is show up and play the same canned repertoire for an hour or two- hardly work, and I usually get fed! Easy, fits into my schedule, and it sounds more impressive (and is much cushier) than working at Macdonald's. Right now I'm trying (hastily) to make enough money to buy myself a decent sleeping bag. I'm joining a couple of girlfriends next weekend in surveying the local ranges, and as it's still winter and we'll be sleeping in a tent I somehow doubt my raggedy old one will do much good! sonia♫♪ 06:51, 31 July 2010 (UTC)

Looked up Yamaha YZR500, not a keyboard! (Vrooom!) My musical training is sadly lacking! It appears WP has good coverage of musical instruments, on a quick look. H'm no mention in Electone of the DSR! May have been a one off, but it has a full keyboard plus many 'instruments'! Have too look into learning, I want to play Toccata in D Minor!

Toccata in D minor? Hmm, not my first choice, but it's not bad. I'm more of a Chopin and Beethoven girl, but I also enjoy jazz. (Before I started learning the piano or cello, I played the recorder at school too... I was a relatively late bloomer as I only started piano 3 years ago, and cello last year. Which is why I'm not great.)
The Kennedy saga is a bit of a dilemma, really. We're still debating whether to unblock him- half the community remembers him fondly and wants him back, the other half has felt absolutely betrayed and never wants to see him again. And then there's the newbies like me who don't remember his desysopping and thus have no clue. What do you think?

Really? Are you serious? Hmm. Why do people call the "new message" or "alert" bar the "orange bar"? I remember having a discussion on HJ Mitchell's talk page and he said, "I'm really busy ... I don't want to see the orange bar". I didn't understand what this "orange bar" was (yea, I can be slow), and I thought he was referring to my signature! Because it's so... orange. I honestly used to jump every time I saw it, and it still startles me. Those userboxes people have that look like new messages bar annoy me for that reason- they take me a couple of seconds to process. New messages- sometimes I dread them, sometimes I look forward to them, but the novelty's worn off I guess. When I know it's a vandal trolling, then it's a pain to get multiple new messages bars for each time someone vandalises and each time it gets rolled back! When it's an admin, then maybe I'm in trouble! If it's a newbie, maybe I've confused them hopelessly... who knows? :P sonia♫♪ 10:09, 31 July 2010 (UTC)
Ah, yes, it's very orange. I should feel delighted when I see that orange bar (because orange is my favourite color). But I get that feeling too. I usually ask myself, "Am I in trouble? Hi HJ (KoTM-Knight of the Order of the Mop). (Yawn!, sorry long 'keyboard nap'!) I was talking about Davtras signature here! Is the Message Bar always Orange? What if a page had an orange background? ie no contrast? It may well be too server intensive to implement but my thought was if it automatically said, "You have a new message from xxxx"?
• I think you missed "this post" of mine from er, 2 weeks ago. A bit stale but anyway it happens! Some odd 'tag team' editing on 11/7 & Soxrox45 (talk · contribs) is a worry! (see last edit, BLP Vio ++!)

I warned him about his downplaying a copyright, in some language versions and Wikimedia Commons. But he does not change his manner. He had better learn about copyright including GFDL, a little more. Perhaps not his talk page, take a look at his other contribs ie. reference desk, where he is quite witty, and humorous. Although, I think he has had to tone it down a bit as "Thiz iz Serius Biznis!". Take look at some of the India/Pakistan related articles I have edited, you may be able to help some of them. Well, having been the "Jewel in The Crown" of the former "British Empire" (apologies Brittanic Editors if I'm wrong, never studied modern history) India, I suppose, naturally took to cricket. Or, were they required to play whether they wanted to or not? Are there any indigenous Indian ball games?

Prompted by this thread I've just been researching Indian traditional sports. It looks like there are sports similar to cricket that were probably copied from cricket (or rounders, etc). Horrifyingly, however, there is Yubi lakpi - if I understand it correctly India invented God's own sport. "Why isn't Sonia peeping?" She's working on a new composition which is due today, that's why. It's sounding quite cool- I've got it for yokobue and violin duet, with marimba, strings, timpani, moktak and shōko. (It's got a sort of pan-Asian feel, but is quite western in structure.) Sibelius 4 is being a pain (not to mention it doesn't have half the instruments!) so I've taken to writing it by hand. "Sonia of the Mountains"? I'll take that as a compliment, though I certainly hope it doesn't reflect my social skills...! TFOWR, those sports are all really interesting... odd how we all end up devising similar games whilst isolated.
