There seemed to be a mistake. The article says that he was born in 1774 and he leaves home in 1779 to work in Bolton. Most five year olds don't leave home to work. If they are working, they are usually working from home. In addition, it says that he left school at 12 and then was apprenticed to his father. It then says that after the apprenticeship was completed, he left Paisley in late 1779.
