August 2019[edit]

Information icon Hello and welcome to Wikipedia. When you add content to talk pages and Wikipedia pages that have open discussion (but never when editing articles), such as at WP:Help desk, please be sure to sign your posts. There are two ways to do this. Either:

  1. Add four tildes ( ~~~~ ) at the end of your comment, or
  2. With the cursor positioned at the end of your comment, click on the signature button located above the edit window.

This will automatically insert a signature with your username or IP address and the time you posted the comment. This information is necessary to allow other editors to easily see who wrote what and when.

Thank you. David Biddulph (talk) 19:36, 4 August 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Help me![edit]

Please help me with... I am trying to help a friend add a photo of her husband (which she took and thus holds the copyright on) to his Wikipedia entry at https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ray_Collins_(cartoonist). She is not too computer-literate (nor am I, but more so than she), and I believe I can walk her through the OTRS release page. What I am not sure about is how she can actually submit the photo, what the dimensions should be, caption information, if any, etc.

I earlier was in contact with the Help Desk about adding links to the entry (which was done), and had also started a conversation there on this photo issue, but the August 2 page was deleted before I'd accomplished much. Any advice you can provide would be appreciated.

You can find the archive of that Help Desk thread at WP:Help desk/Archives/2019 August 2#Adding links within existing entry https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ray_Collins_(cartoonist). David Biddulph (talk) 21:39, 11 August 2019 (UTC)[reply]
I assume she is willing to release the image under a free license that allows everybody to re-use and modify it for any purpose, including commercial purposes. In that case, she should upload it to the Wikimedia Commons via their Upload Wizard. The resolution should be the highest available (I assume she has a digitized version of the photo and doesn't intend to send a print - we would be rather ill-equipped to handle that), and the description should be, well, descriptive. Whom does the photo show, when was it taken, where (e.g. was it at a special event?), is there anything else that would help the viewer understand the photo? I just clicked "random article", and the page that I was pointed to has an image that can serve as an example of a good caption (though it's not a person): File:Red freightliner.jpg. The Upload Wizard does a rather good job of guiding people, including ones who are not computer-savvy. Huon (talk) 22:44, 11 August 2019 (UTC)[reply]
