GBP to Pound sterling[edit]

Hi - you are making a great many edits, changing links from 'GBP' to 'Poung sterling'. Considering the advice at WP:NOTBROKEN and WP:MEATBOT, can you explain why you are doing this? Thanks Girth Summit (blether) 13:25, 28 July 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Because many of these instances were entirely inappropriate; anything before the 1970s is incorrect as the ISO currency code system did not exist until then. In any case these codes are likely to confuse the reader as they are not particularly intuitive and are primarily intended for coding software rather than human eyes. 89.242.188.113 (talk) 13:27, 28 July 2023 (UTC)[reply]
I've just reviewed a few more of your changes. Some of them I definitely agree with - this for example is a clear improvement on the text. Many of them are just changing the target of the link to avoid a working redirect (example), which doesn't affect what the reader sees. I'd suggest that edits of that nature, while not harmful, are also not beneficial and when you are making so many of them you are flooding people's watchlists with lots of unnecessary edits. I agree with Girth Summit above. Your edits are unhelpful and hugely disruptive. Please stop doing this.
If this is a shared IP address, and you did not make the edits referred to above, consider creating an account for yourself or logging in with an existing account so that you can avoid further irrelevant notices.

I think I'm actually fine with the edits from this IP since we had the conversation above - they appear to be all edits that would change what the reader sees. '£1,000' is, in my view, objectively better writing than '1000 GBP'. Girth Summit (blether) 12:43, 29 July 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Editing through an IP is permitted by policy - provided this editor hasn't been blocked before, there is nothing compelling them to log in to edit. We all 'hide' behind our usenames (in the sense that those usernames obscure our IP addresses, and thus our location). This editor is choosing to reveal quite a bit about themselves by editing without logging in. (Funnily enough, it geolocates to Rutherglen, in Glasgow - a place I know very well from my youth.) I think you'll find that all the edits you reverted were made prior to my discussion with the IP editor above. I don't have a view on which of you is right about those, but the relevant articles' talk pages, or a relevant wikiproject, would seem to be the proper place to discuss it - that way, discussion could continue if the user's IP address jumps. The issue I had was that using machine coding when a simple word would do is likely to be arcane and confusing to the reader. I find marking a column of sums of money looks far more pleasing to the eye and useful to the reader if it uses, say "US $", "€" or "£ Sterling" than a string of characters that look more like stock ticker codes or the abbreviation for some unfamiliar foreign currency. 89.242.188.113 (talk) 14:26, 29 July 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Per MOS:CURRENCY:
** For currencies whose unit is named the "pound":
*** Use the £ symbol (U+00A3 £ POUND SIGN) for unambiguous referrals to sterling, the United Kingdom's currency. Avoid the U+20A4 ₤ LIRA SIGN.
*** GBP, sterling's ISO 4217 code, should be used to disambiguate that currency from others. Avoid using stg. or GB£
