Good work on copy-editing the article. It was a tough task here — it frustrates me that "copy-editing" on Wikipedia actually encapsulates not just general copy-editing but also attempting to make sense of the poor English used by foreign editors. Problem 1. You made several edits, without checking what had gone before. This is very bad policy. The editor previous to you had left a poop bum message. The editor previous to that had deleted a very large wad of the article. If you then come along and make half a dozen minor changes, it screens the fact that some editor before you has been vandalistic. Before you edit, always check the current status of what you are editing, particularly for edits by people without a signnature. they are very often vandals. It is a good idea to look back for several days.
Problem 2. The very precise meaning of words. Reverting a fairly complex but very carefully worded statement to a much simpler one does not always mean the same thing or state the facts.
- He (ie Michelangelo, who is the subject of the previous sentence and therefore doesn't need repeating) is to be regarded as the chief designer of a large part of the building.... is not the same thing as:
- Michelangelo is regarded as as the chief designer etc...
These two statements are quite different. In fact Michelangelo is not always regarded as the chief designer. His role has been greatly underplayed by editors to these pages who have taken a very simplisitic reading of the available sources and who have misunderstood Giacomo della Porta's role and imagined that he "redesigned" the dome. That is why the sentence is worded the way that it is worded. It is addressing a common misconception.
- "as it now stands" and "as it currently exists" do not mean the same thing either.
- "as it now stands" implies that it is complete. "as it currently exists" implies that the building is in a state of impermanence. Amandajm (talk) 07:26, 13 March 2009 (UTC)

Many many apologies for not getting back to you. I've put it on my watchlist to see how it goes. I don't think it is serious enough at the moment to warrant semi-protection, that is normally only given to articles which are having multiple vandalism daily. You and I may not like that guidance, but that's what it is and to protect it at this level of vandalism would stop new IP editors from editing it constructively as well. I hope you understand. I get so blinking tired of vandalism. I get online hoping to do some writing and often spend all my time chasing up vandalism (or explaining things endlessly to people who are so focussed on one cause that they fail to see the big picture.) Hi,

Hi! I didn't really move or change anything - I just inserted a header. It seemed to me that the lead was too long and detailed (discussing such things as air-conditioning fans, standardized examinations, the names of a number of famous poets, painters, etc., etc.). Looking at it again now I think I should have just shortened these two very long paragraphs and left such detailed subjects to be dealt with (as they are - very well, it seems to me) further on in the article? As I understand it, the lead is supposed to summarize the main points of the article providing a brief overview - not to duplicate details to be repeated further on in the article. Perhaps the guidelines should specify the lead should be made up of 3 to 4 short to medium paragraphs? Anyway, I certainly don't want to get into an argument about it. Do you think you (or we?) could shorten the lead somewhat along the lines I have mentioned and remove the heading I inserted (which, on second thought, is not very appropriate)? Wrong Egyptian dates
Dear A. Parrot,
I notice that you used Ian Shaw's now old and dated 2000 book to try to standardise Egptian chronology dates for Seti II at 1200-1194 BC, Siptah at 1194-1188 BC , Twosret at 1188-1186 BC and Setnakhte at 1186-1184 BC. Unfortunately these dates are all wrong. I provided the dates for most of these articles and I used the most up to date Egyptological academic reference: Erik Hornung, Rolf Krauss & David Warburton (editors) book titled "Ancient Egyptian Chronology (Handbook of Oriental Studies)" from 2006. It was published by Brill.
If you read the wiki article on Seti II, there is now strong evidence that Seti II directly succeeded his father in all of Egypt but his reign in Upper Egypt was disrupted by an usurper named Amenmesse in his third to fourth years. So, Seti II, ruled Egypt from c.1203-1197 BC. Then Manetho states that Twosret ruled Egypt for 7 years which contained the almost 6 year reign of Siptah. So, Siptah would have ruled Egypt from 1197-1191 BC (6 yrs) and Twosret herself ruled Egypt independently for about 1 full year between 1191-1190 BC. Finally, your reference to Shaw's statement that Setnakte ruled Egypt for only 2 years from 1186-1188 BC is totally wrong. If you had read wiki's article on Setnakhte which I mostly wrote, I noted and provided clear references for a Year 3 and Year 4 date for this king. Even the image of the stela in his article is dated to his Year 4! So, Setnakhte definitely ruled Egypt for likely almost 4 full years now--not 2 years as you write. What I am saying is that you cannot standardise Egyptian chronology by using an outdated 10 year old book because it misleads everyone. Could you please allow me to reverse your date changes for the 19th dynasty because they are definitely wrong?
As an aside, you quote Ian Shaw and assign almost 9 full years to Ramesses X but almost no Egyptologist accepts this figure today except Kitchen who still proposes this date. This king is very obscure in Egyptian history and his highest known date is a Year 3 workman's Deir El-Medina diary. So....he could have ruled Egypt for 3 or 4 years but 8 or 9 years is almost impossible since there are many dated texts during the New Kingdom into the reign of Ramesses XI, his successor. Professors Erik Hornung, Rolf Krauss & David Warburton in their 2006 book give Ramesses X about 3-4 years in their book. If you have any questions about my basic integrity or reliability, please feel free to ask Admin Doug Weller But I hope you will allow me to try to correct the dates which are clearly wrong in the next few days. I like Shaw's books but I think that even he would agree that his dates are only general reference points for readers and can be altered by new discoveries or new interpretations of the historical evidence.
- After all, it was only in 2000 that it was learned that Chancellor Bay was executed for treason in Year 5 of Siptah (c.1192 BC) and that he never served Twosret on the throne as some Egyptologists once thought since the Deir El-Medina workmen were basically told in an ostraca document to stop working on his tomb due to his fate. - Unfortunately I don't have access to any chronological information more recent than Shaw. I did worry when I went through standardizing the dates that I might be using outdated information, but mainly I was just trying to sort out the mess of conflicting dates we had previously. If you have better information available, by all means correct my edits. Check if there are other periods where your sources conflict with mine; I went back all the way to the Badarian era, and all the way forward to the Third Intermediate Period. - OK. Thank you. I'll do some changes or reverts to Shaw's dated or wrong 19th, 20th and early 21st dynasty dates. I will do this in a few days time as I'm also busy in my real (non-wiki)life. You don't get paid for your work here sadly. I must tell you this though. Firstly, Sheshonq I's timeline has been quite conclusively dated from 943 to 922 BC rather than Kitchen's original 945 to 924 BC on the basis of a lunar date from his reign. If you think about this, it makes much sense because it allows this pharaoh more time (3 full years) to erect monuments at Karnak after his 925 BC campaign against Israel and Judah rather than just 1 year (Kitchen's 945-924 BC date). Secondly, if you read Ian Shaw, he likely assigns Osorkon II only 25 years but this is too short. There is a Year 29 Karnak Quay inscription which, on the basis of its writing style, likely belongs to this king's reign and the supposed Year 22 date for Osorkon II's Heb Sed is damaged and can equally be read as either Year 22 or Year 30. Today all Egyptologists are willing to assign Osorkon II a reign of c.30-31 years and even Kitchen, at an important 2007 Leiden Conference on the Libyan period, was willing to accept this point. I just read the publication.
Finally, I'm afraid I have some rather BAD news to tell you about Horemheb's reign. Its Not 27 or 28 years as the Year 28 (Ramesside era) Inscription of Mes suggested but only 14 years and 1 month as Manetho assigned to this pharaoh in his Epitome. What happened is that Egyptologists removed 10 years from this figure and instead assigned 4 years and 1 month to Ay, his successor who was attested by a Year 4 stela. Mes or his copyists likely made an error with the date. Jacobus Van Dijk recently excavated and removed all the rubble in Horemheb's VOK tomb with a fine tooth and what he found was....revealing. There were many many Year 13 and Year 14 wine jar labels from Horemheb's estates (this was reported on the EEF forum too) which accords well with Manetho's figure of 14 years and 1 month for this pharaoh. So, he would have died shortly after beginning his 15th regnal year. Van Dijk has just published his report in JARCE 44 (2008) with a short abstract here (see p.4) but it is so new that the Egyptologists have not come up with a new Egyptian chronology. However, it seems clear that much of the dates for the 18th dynasty chronology would have to be revised since Horemheb's reign has been sharply reduced by 13 years from 27 years to just 14 years. This revision explains everything: why this king could never properly complete and decorate his VOK king if he had a reign of almost 27 full years which is almost impossible. Instead his tomb was only partly painted and the workmen simply gave up completing his tomb. Now we know why. I hope this helps. So, there is no such thing as a fixed Egyptian chronology right now with all these new finds turning up. Regards, --Leoboudv (talk) 01:49, 21 April 2010 (UTC)

Biographies of military figures often run into the problem of shifting ranks due to promotion, demotion, and other changing circumstances. The usual way I have handled this is to note the highest rank held in World War I, followed by a phrase denoting their ultimate rank. For example:
Leutnant de Reserve (later Generalmajor) Arthur Laumann et cetera, et cetera.
If you know of a WP policy guiding this situation, I would appreciate your informing me, so I can tidy up the writing process a bit.

Backlog Elimination Drive Wrap-up
| Thanks very much to all who helped with the Guild of Copy Editors Backlog Elimination Drive. We were very close to meeting our target of 7,500 articles remaining in the backlog. Our most shining success is the incredible reduction in the backlog of Special Requests. That part of the project saw a drop from 62 articles in the queue, some dating back to February of 2009, down to a stunning THREE, all of which were being edited at the close of the drive. The Special Requests page will now be a great resource for people looking to tidy up their article in advance of a GA or FA nomination, instead of a place where articles go to die.
Moving forward The drive has not only forced a great leap forward in reducing the backlog. It has helped promote the Guild, and led to a greater awareness of the level of vigilance required to keep the backlog manageable. Ideas such as charts, graphs, and barnstars helped motivate editors, and meeting other users helped quell any feelings gnomish editors may have had in the past that they were toiling all alone.  Greetings from the Guild of Copy Editors Backlog Elimination Drive! We have now passed the halfway point, so here's an update. Progress Report - Progress toward the targets has been good. 751 articles out of the approximately 1,600 we would like to get completed by the end of the month were done by July 15, so we will be very close to meeting the target for volume. However, we would like to clear all of the 2008 articles from the backlog, and there are still 892 left to do. Please consider choosing one of these older articles when looking for something to copy edit. If we focus our firepower we can completely wipe out 2008 from the queue. Participation Report - 95 people signed up for the July drive. This is a great result compared to May, when we had 36. However, in May only one person that signed up didn't do any copy edits, and in July only 59 of the 95 have posted any copy edits on the big board. The task may seem insurmountable but please remember that if all 95 participants copy edit just one article a day from now until the end of the month, we will eliminate 1,300 more articles from the backlog. So please consider participating at whatever level you can! All contributions are appreciated. GOCE Backlog Elimination Drive Wrap-up
| Greetings from the Guild of Copy Editors July 2010 Backlog Elimination Drive. Thanks to all who participated in the drive! Over 100 editors—including Jimbo Wales—signed up this time (nearly triple the participants of the May drive). This benefited the Guild as well as the articles in need of copy editing. You can see from the comparison graphs that we increased the number of completed copyedits substantially. Unfortunately, we were not able to meet our goal of completely wiping out 2008 from the queue. We also were not able to reduce the backlog to less than 6,000 articles. We suspect people were busy with real life summertime things, at least in the northern hemisphere! We were able to remove the months of January, February, March, April, and May from the backlog, and we almost wiped out the month of June. We reduced the backlog by 1,289 articles (17%), so all in all it was a very successful drive, and we will be holding another event soon. We'll come up with some new ideas to try to keep things fresh and interesting. Keep up the good work, everybody!

WP:DAFT
Okay, i think you need to chill your beans a little bit.
For starters, only one article that you deleted from the list (meat mum) was actually made by me, the others were fully legitimate. Also, the last one you deleted (something about an anchovy quiche, i don't remember exactly) i didn't even add to the list, yet you deleted it giving the reason that it was added by 'the vandal', as if you're accusing me of being wikipedia's sole vandal. You also removed the 'this page has been greated 8 times' part that i added under Farting In Ireland, why was this? Farting In Ireland has been on that page for longer than i've known it, therefore it wasn't my creation. Surely you must agree that the note i added wasn't vandalism.
On the topic of vandalism; yes i am Kill Me When I Die, but you may check back through the edit logs on that account, although i did create Meat Mum with it (which was an in-joke with my friends rather than solely for WP:DAFT) all my other edits with that account were good faith. This new account isn't a sock-puppet as such, as i'm not claiming to not be Kill Me When I Die, i'm simply using this account to get around the fact that Kill Me When I Die was blocked for something that i didn't do. If you're suspicous of me under this new account, that's fine. You may watch my edit logs and ban me the second something that appears to be WP:DAFT fodder comes up but i'm going to tell you now, i'm not a vandal.
As for the 'promoting vandalism' idea, i really fail to see how having the articles you removed on the page will promote vandalism any more or less than if they're not there, to any reader of the page, they're just more freaky titles, they won't be seem by the public the way they're seen by you so you needn't worry.
Regarding the 'freaky redirects' concept that i was discussing. I don't know if any of your rant was raimed at it or not, but if it was, let me explain that none of that is vandalism. They are all genuine redirects found throughout Wikipedia, none of which were made by me. Actually, the one expection is Turbotonator, which wasn't created for the purpose of the potential 'freaky redirect' page, but rather because it's a genuine nickname for Brian Tobin.
Lastly, i don't really see why you're threagtening me with the deletion of WP:DAFT. The loss of that article won't be the end of my world any more than it will be to any other wikipedia user. I think you're cutting your nose off to spite your face a little bit here.
Is short, i'm simply requesting that you please end your needless animosity towards myself, as i have basically done nothing wrong, thank you.

Greetings from the Guild of Copy Editors Backlog Elimination Drive!
We have reached the midway point in our backlog elimination drive, so here is an update. Participation report — The November drive has 53 participants at this point. We had 77 participants in the September drive. In July, 95 people signed up for the drive, and in May we had 36. If you are not participating, it is not too late to join! Progress report — The drive is quite successful so far, as we have already almost reached our target of a 10% reduction in the number of articles in the backlog. We are doing very well at keeping our Requests page clear, as those articles count double for word count for this drive. Please keep in mind the possibility of removing other tags when you are finished with an article. If the article no longer needs {{cleanup}}, {{wikify}}, or other similar maintenance tags, please remove them, as this will make the tasks of other WikiProjects easier to complete. Thanks very much for participating in the Drive, and see you at the finish line!
