The Photographer's Barnstar
For your time and effort in capturing some great photos of Ulysses S. Grant Memorial, I award you this Photographer's Barnstar. You made a good article better... and reminded me of some quality time that I'd spent there. Many thanks! Carptrash (talk) 21:11, 2 June 2010 (UTC)
Muchas gracias. ;-) While photographing that memorial, I came across something rather cute. You can see them at the bottom of this photo. APK whisper in my ear 21:57, 2 June 2010 (UTC)

In one of those misguided moments that we all (opinion) subject ourselves to, I put all my slides of stained glass, including quite a bit of John LaFarge's work, in one folder. Now I can't find it. I don't suppose that you've seen it? Cute quackers. bye the way. Carptrash (talk) 01:29, 3 June 2010 (UTC)

Do you mean the photos are on Commons? I love LaFarge. APK whisper in my ear 11:42, 3 June 2010 (UTC)

Well what I am looking for is a three ring binder with a bunch of my stained glass slides from 25 years ago when I was doing pilgrimages to various people's works, including La Farge. If a mind is a terrible thing to loose, loosing slides is even worse. Your pictures should probably go to commons - making them easier to fond, Carptrash (talk) 15:26, 3 June 2010 (UTC)

Best place for a laser tag game?

my picture of Paul Manship's "Dancer with Gazelles", with a better one. " We like change" (a household mantra here). Carptrash (talk) 02:59, 8 June 2010 (UTC)

and now my Caspar too??? Carptrash (talk) 05:18, 8 June 2010 (UTC)
:-) It seems the powers that be moved Dancer and Gazelles to the Old Patent Office Building. (since your photo was taken at the Corcoran) Every time I visit the National Building Museum, I can't help but think it would be a great place to play laser tag. I kick ass at that game. APK whisper in my ear 16:24, 8 June 2010 (UTC)

Sunday I played in the 42nd Annual Hippies vs Indians softball game, and while I played okay we got out butts kicked 24 to 15 or so. As a result I can hardly walk now and would be a sitting duck for any lazer (or any other ) action. But go ahead, put me out of my misery. Carptrash (talk) 02:06, 9 June 2010 (UTC)

Just making contact

Hi, APK! I am a babe in the woods when it comes to wikipedia compared to you, but see we sometimes work on the same articles, so just wanted to make contact, thank you (including a thank you for some photos of yours I've used), and wish you continued success! I do wonder if you ever take photos of people, in addition to buildings. I would love to have a photograph of some activity of Bet Mishpachah, to go with the article I just created (and to go with your photo of the building they use!). NearTheZoo (talk) 13:33, 21 May 2010 (UTC)

Howdy! I'm glad you've made good use of the images. I rarely take photos of people (buildings don't stare back at you, wondering what the heck you're doing...ha), but a friend of mine has attended Bet Mishpachah's services. I'll ask him to snap a few pix.
P.S. Since you've written several articles related to Judaism in Washington, D.C., this will help if you're uploading images.
P.S.S. Have you read The Jewish Community of Washington, D.C., Southwest Washington, D.C., or Jewish Washington? I have copies of the first two. Do you know if the third book is any good? It might come in handy for an article on Washington's Jewish history (see Category:Jews and Judaism in the United States by city). APK whisper in my ear 06:38, 22 May 2010 (UTC)
Thanks, APK!! If your friend could take a photo or two of Bet Mishpachah, that would be great. I don't know what their policy is about photos during Sabbath services, but perhaps he could get permission to take a photo before the service, or at a special event.
Meanwhile, I am going to order Jewish Washington, since there is an inexpensive used copy available on Amazon. I do have The Jewish Community of Washington, D.C. I'll also look around for the book on Southwest Washington, D.C. Meanwhile, I'll also check the wikipedia and wikipedia commons pages you recommended -- and if I get energized, I'll even consider creating a page on Washington Jewish history! Thanks again!!!! (PS I'm getting ready to launch another article, on the annual White House Hanukkah Party.) NearTheZoo (talk) 00:32, 23 May 2010 (UTC)
Great. I found another cornerstone ceremony picture, in addition to one exterior and three interior images. (in case you need them) Cheers. APK whisper in my ear 00:57, 23 May 2010 (UTC)
Wonderful! Just added the second cornerstone photo. (Love those old photos!!). Not sure about the interior ones, although I do enjoy seeing them! Thanks!! (By the way, did finish the White House Hanukkah Party page. Learned a lot of trivia!). NearTheZoo (talk) 02:31, 24 May 2010 (UTC)

Hi again, APK!! Just wanted to say that if your friends at Bet Mishpachah are willing to take a photo or two, that might be the only way we'll get one for the page! I've been in touch with a few of the big mucky-mucks, who promise to get something to me, but nothing seems to be happening! They may eventually come through, but I really do think that a photo with people would spice up the page, since the building (DCJCC) is the only photo there now -- and that one is there thanks to you! Best wishes -- and congratulations on all your continuing good work!! NearTheZoo (talk) 13:41, 11 June 2010 (UTC)

Arthur L. Willard

Thanks for adding the pic of Arthur L. Willards former home in Washington D.C. I wonder if I might ask a favor. Since you're in the D.C. area (I assume) would you be willing to check with Library of Congress or other sources for a photo of Willard himself, preferrably in uniform, that could be added to the article? I've done some online searching as well as e-mailing with the US Naval archive people and had no luck. Only photos are of Willard in a mass group and not very clear. The admiral was raised in my hometown, so I've taken sort of a special interest in this largely forgotten naval hero. Any help much appreciated. Sector001 (talk) 01:15, 10 June 2010 (UTC)

Here you go. It's the only picture I can find online, but I'll look for a higher quality image. APK whisper in my ear 01:53, 10 June 2010 (UTC)

Thats AWESOME! Thanks so much for finding it and uploading. I owe you one. Sector001 (talk) 04:12, 10 June 2010 (UTC)

2 things

First I apologize for the Newseum piece; I didn't mean for you to eliminate your photo. I am OK if you want to take it back to your original. Second, I was looking at Union Station, Washington, D.C. I don't know enough about HTML to correct the gallery section. On my screen it appears the photos are overlapping and I knew you could make the technical corrections. Thanks Karen Nutini (talk) 15:09, 12 June 2010 (UTC)

No worries. Union Station's gallery seems fine on my computer. What size is your monitor? APK whisper in my ear 22:24, 12 June 2010 (UTC)
1920 x 1200 How weird. Two photos are overlapping when at full screen. But when I slightly minimize the window the USGS photo floats up and down the left side. I'll need to look at it later on my work computer. Thanks, APK. Karen Nutini (talk) 22:36, 12 June 2010 (UTC)

Hoping to avoid a dispute over whether David Nesenoff is an Jew and a Conservative rabbi

Hi, I noticed that you removed the American Jew cat and said in the edit summary that you were removing Conservative rabbi cat. He is both, so I am re-adding. Hope that is all right with you, but if not, we should discuss. KeptSouth (talk) 15:27, 20 June 2010 (UTC)

I never said I was removing Category:American Conservative rabbis. I removed the parent category (Category:American Jews). There's no need for the latter since American Conservative rabbis is more specific. APK whisper in my ear 15:31, 20 June 2010 (UTC)
P.S. Why would you assume I'd start an edit war ("Hoping to avoid a dispute") over something so trivial? APK whisper in my ear 15:33, 20 June 2010 (UTC)
Sorry I misunderstood the edit summary {"External links: remove parent cat of Category:American Conservative rabbis)" and thought that meant you were removing the Conservative rabbi cat. Thanks for explaining that that meant you were removing the American Jews category.
I didn't mean to imply you would start an edit war, I was expressing my intention first, before I did anything with anyone's edit. The way I look at it general defensiveness is the order of the day b/c someone was indef blocked for a while due to a content dispute in which he was mainly if not entirely in the right. The block was reduced by another admin to about 5 days total; the same penalty I have seen others get for having up to 8 confirmed sock puppets, some of which voted on the same ANI's or Afd's and faux-debated each other.
The entire episode is chilling - to think that someone who is in the right or merely disagreeing on content can be run off WP so easily, and I know others have been desysoped for the same "offense".
It seems false allegations are often made on these Arab-Israel conflict related pages of vandalism, sock puppetry, arabism (whatever that is), and even support of terrorists, if an ed. is going against the grain of one point of view and attempting to balance the articles per WP policies. And, if you are not familiar with the disputes, they are now over the most small and trial of points. I have little problem with debating content - except now I see the false allegations, forum shopping and all kinds of other dirty tricks succeeding so well. Sorry to bother you with all this, I was just explaining my position as defensive on these articles, and as not meant to be a personal attack. If you haven't already re-removed the American jews category, I will. - Regards KeptSouth (talk) 15:57, 20 June 2010 (UTC)

Hey APK, I noticed your reviews of various article submissions for "Did You Know?" and was wondering if you could briefly check out my article, Mordecai Barbour, and give me some guidance as to what I can do to improve it for submission. Any comments or critique you could provide would be of the greatest assistance. Thanks! --Caponer (talk) 22:04, 26 June 2010 (UTC)

Howdy. I'll be happy to take a look. Four suggestions - 1) The birth/death dates include four citations. I'd stick with one or two if at all possible. This reference says he was born in 1763, while this one says "Sep 1753". The Wiki article says 1764 and January 4, 1846, which seems to match these references. I suggest removing the conflicting two citations. 2) Barbour's relatives are mentioned in the lede, but I don't see the need to mention their birth/death dates until later in the article. 3) Since Barbour was an American, I suggest "Americanizing" the dates. (4 January 1846 ===> January 4, 1846) Someone will probably do it when the article is linked on the Main Page. 4) Possible hooks - mention Barbour having served under the command of Gilbert du Motier, marquis de Lafayette, or his participation in the Siege of Yorktown. I hope that helps. APK whisper in my ear 02:27, 27 June 2010 (UTC)

Little Thetford flesh-hooks

Hi. I do not wish to suffer The slings and arrows of your discontent. I will therefore not propose a DYK hook for Little Thetford again. I have now read the rules. I am in the process of creating a new article in my user space. The article is currently 3,448 bytes long. It will grow to be around twice that within the next few days as I continue my research. The article is similar in topic, but different in prose style, to Dunaverney_flesh-hook. In particular, I hope to broaden the subject by including more detail as I find it. I have also sourced an image of the artifact. I am waiting for the image to be cleared for copyright and then uploaded into wikimedia commons. As you can see, I am not sure when I can complete the research to make this article a nice article for DYK. This is why I have created it in my user space. I hope this does not break any rules I have missed. Also, I am slow at verifying my research material :(

To cut a long story short, would you object to me (eventually) creating a DYK:hook for Little Thetford flesh-hook?

--Senra (talk) 17:00, 27 June 2010 (UTC)

Hi again. The article you're working on would be eligible for DYK. Just make sure you nominate it within five days of moving it to mainspace. As I mentioned before, you did a nice job with Little Thetford. I look forward to the next one. APK whisper in my ear 01:44, 28 June 2010 (UTC)
I asked for help to move User_talk:Senra/Flesh-hook earlier today and it got moved to main space for 10 minutes or so. It was moved incorrectly from User_talk:Senra/Flesh-hook to Little Thetford flesh-hook. Ten minutes later it was moved to User:Senra/Little Thetford flesh-hook where it is now. The discussions are at User_talk:Senra#Little Thetford flesh-hook and User_talk:Senra#erm_Little_Thetford_flesh-hook_live.3F. Would that move have caused the DYK clock to start ticking? --Senra (talk) 22:46, 28 June 2010 (UTC)
No, it's fine. If someone raises the concern, explain what happened and I'm sure they'll understand. APK whisper in my ear 23:25, 28 June 2010 (UTC)

A thief in the night

What a little turd this person is! I was working on an article about a wilderness study area in Montana, which can see I started on June 27. This little thief came along on July 2, and stole that article off my Talk page!!! He even it with incomplete sections and errors still intact! I can't believe it! He didn't even bother to rewrite any part of it! I am appalled! (Note that I completed the article today and tried to create it, only to find — to my astonishment — it had already been created, and that little pinhead had stolen it.) Hello again. I wondered if I might ask a favor? I have just set up Mizabot to archive my talk page, which had gotten ungainly. I wondered if you might have a look and tell me if I've done it properly? Many thanks and enjoy your holiday. MarmadukePercy (talk) 13:26, 5 July 2010 (UTC)

Also, a rather dumb question. When the bot archives, does it carry over intact all the images on the page as well? MarmadukePercy (talk) 23:04, 5 July 2010 (UTC)

APK rant

A British editor changing date formats on an American-topic article is extremely annoying. If I tried the same thing, on say, 7 July 2005 London bombings, the Brits would be screaming bloody murder. Today is July 9, 2010; not – gag me – 9 July 2010. USA, USA, USA!! APK whisper in my ear 13:34, 9 July 2010 (UTC)

Try writing on Canadian topics - the convergence of British and American spellings and usage is nightmarish. As a West Virginian, I have enough trouble with my native grammar, distinguishing when to use we'uns vs. us'uns, not to mention them'uns and you'uns. Acroterion (talk) 14:36, 9 July 2010 (UTC)

They have actually translated the Bible into lolcat. Also, just to make you feel older, I was born after the Cold War officially ended. Soxwon (talk) 02:57, 11 July 2010 (UTC)

Oh my. The first verse I looked up was John 11:35. ("Happy Cat wepted.") King James is rolling in his grave! APK whisper in my ear 03:00, 11 July 2010 (UTC)
Just so long as this doesn't replace good ol' Oxford we're fine. Soxwon (talk) 03:05, 11 July 2010 (UTC)
I should probably not laugh at this, but I do every time. --Moni3 (talk) 03:01, 11 July 2010 (UTC)
I just bookmarked that page, rly. "But Lotz wyfe not listen. She luked bak at home-place and now has a flavor, flavor iz salty." APK whisper in my ear 03:03, 11 July 2010 (UTC)

Thank you

Thanks for your help on the Little Walnut River Pratt Truss Bridge article. I'm hoping to fill in some of these other Butler County locations. I created Beaumont St. Louis and San Francisco Railroad Water Tank yesterday, please feel free to add or subrtract anything there as well. Kindzmarauli (talk) 05:19, 10 July 2010 (UTC)

You're welcome.  :-) APK whisper in my ear 05:24, 10 July 2010 (UTC)
I just found the nomination forms (best reference for NRHP articles) for Little Walnut River Pratt Truss Bridge and Beaumont St. Louis and San Francisco Railroad Water Tank. APK whisper in my ear 05:29, 10 July 2010 (UTC)
Thank you! I wonder if I could copypasta the text from these and use them to expand the articles? Seems like National Park Service documents would be public domain. What do you think? Kindzmarauli (talk) 05:26, 11 July 2010 (UTC)
De nada. NRHP forms are usually prepared by private citizens, which means they're not public domain. For instance, the Little Walnut River Pratt Truss Bridge form was prepared by "Kerry Davis, Architectural Historian, & Elizabeth Rosin, Partner" (their names are on page 4). I see, thanks for explaining that. I guess I will just have to do some actual work, haha. :) Kindzmarauli (talk) 06:40, 12 July 2010 (UTC)

First Smithsonian workshop conversation

Please check out the conversation at Wikipedia talk:GLAM/SI#First workshop session, thanks Sadads (talk) 22:28, 12 July 2010 (UTC)

Don't like the description, or better on the Wikipedia page, or best left for another site? Neurokeller (talk) 04:52, 10 July 2010 (UTC)

Please read Wikipedia's policy regarding articles on neologisms. A Google search for "Wikspedition" results in two hits; one is the page you created, and the second is someone's myspace page. A redirect to the Wikipedia article is the best solution. APK whisper in my ear 05:01, 10 July 2010 (UTC)
Two Google hits and no mention of the word in the Wikipedia article told me that it is "best left to another site". — RHaworth (talk · contribs) 17:47, 15 July 2010 (UTC)
Even better. APK whisper in my ear 17:51, 15 July 2010 (UTC)

Disruptive?

Hi. You claimed here that I am being disruptive. My edit maybe is not great but at least helps in readability of the wikicode. How your edit benefits of anything? What's the reason of a pointless revert? -- Magioladitis (talk) 07:34, 11 July 2010 (UTC)

Your bot is making pointless edits (1, 2, 3) to countless talk pages and my watchlist doesn't need any more clutter. No one cares about "readability of the wikicode" because the talk headers and project banners are fine as is. Your bot needs to be shut down if it can't find anything substantial to improve. In regards to a pointless revert, I might ask you the same thing. APK whisper in my ear 07:41, 11 July 2010 (UTC)
I think I explained why I did this revert. Just keep in mind that many editors don't watch bots' edits so your reverts probably cluttered more watchlists than my bot's. I am not planning to go further on it. This work is not my bot's main task anyway. -- Magioladitis (talk) 07:46, 11 July 2010 (UTC)
"I am not planning to go further on it." - Thank God. APK whisper in my ear 07:47, 11 July 2010 (UTC)
Just for information. These changes will be part of WP:AWB's new release. I am testing performance and checking for potential bugs. -- Magioladitis (talk) 07:54, 11 July 2010 (UTC)
That's swell. APK whisper in my ear 07:55, 11 July 2010 (UTC)
FWIW, WP:NOTBROKEN (and from that page, this helpful page) explain pretty clearly why bypassing redirects is a stupid idea. Magioladitis, I know you know this. And, as far as I remember, AWB is designed specifically to not do purely cosmetic changes by themselves for this very reason (cluttering watchlists and page histories and annoying contributors). --MZMcBride (talk) 22:43, 11 July 2010 (UTC)
I'm glad Magioladitis is still making such valuable contributions to the encyclopedia. APK whisper in my ear 01:08, 12 July 2010 (UTC)
