What to do with a page with "difficult" reference structure

I would like to work on the page Augmentative and Alternative Communication but the reference structure is very odd As far as I can tell, I need to add a reference in the reference area, and then hand code using Cite error: There are <ref> tags on this page without content in them (see the help page). (in the main text) where I would like it to be inserted so it will show up as a "linked" note ( which then links back to the actual reference) This is a very cumbersome approach, and may explain why so little new information has been added to the page in the last year or two.

What happens in Wikipedia in these situations? Can I recreate the page as it "should" be done, and then nominate that the new page replace the old one? That article is already a Good Article, which means it already went through a structured review. So, before trying to re-invent it, I would raise this on the talk page of the article or look at the main authors of the article and talk to them as well. Can you upload the logo for our company to replace the older one you uploaded in 2010?

Hi there,

My name is David, and I'm the webmaster for Acumed LLC, the company for which you uploaded a logo back in 2010.

Since then, at around 2013, we have a new logo that we would like to be reflected on our Wikipedia entry. However, I cannot replace or upload a new logo to the Acumed entry.

Would it be possible for you to do this? Or could you instruct me how? I'm very sorry to be a bother, but the logo image that's currently on the Acumed entry is now out-of-date and no longer represents our company, and I'd love to see it updated to the most current (that is now displayed prominently on all of our buildings here in Hillsboro!).

Revert on Hillsboro Hops

What was your reason for making this rollback on Hillsboro Hops? To me, the IP's edits didn't seem to be vandalism. Conifer (talk) 07:43, 11 July 2015 (UTC)

They were unexplained that including the improper removal of a comma, and the removal of context for the non-American readers. Constitution of Saint Kitts and Nevis

Thank you for assessing the article for Wikiproject Law. I was wondering, since you assessed it C class, what areas you think it needs improvement in, and which of the B class criteria it fails? The two issues are that the WP:LEDE should be expanded, and more importantly for me is there is too much reliance on WP:PRIMARY sources. If you review the United States Constitution, which is B class, I did not see any citations to the constitution itself in a quick look. A large portion of this article is sourced to the constitution itself. This is a very common problem in law articles as we attorneys think we are allowed to interpret what the cases and statutes say. Kryptiq Changed Its Name to Enli Health Intelligence

Wanted to make you aware that Kryptiq has changed its name to "Enli Health Intelligence." The press release announcing the name change can be found here:

Susan Graber Article

The changes I've made all improve the accuracy and writing of the article. I'm not removing content that is "technically correct"--if I gave that impression previously then I misspoke.

The only content I removed from the article is an inaccurate reference to Judge Graber being a "U.S. District Court" judge prior to her appointment on the Oregon Court of Appeals. That statement is untrue and needs to be removed. (The reference is also not "sourced"; if you click on the link that's supposed to support that she was a district court judge, it takes you to an unavailable webpage).
The other changes are correcting grammatical errors or adding more information about her career.

If you see anything that is specifically a problem, please let me know and I'm happy to work with you to get it right.

What I do are quick, first assessments. I skim the article quickly. In this case, I have heard and read about similar issues, such as Love Canal. The Argus

Hi, AM. I noticed your edits to The Hillsboro Argus, giving news that I somehow missed. You're probably thinking about what to do with the articles on that paper and the Forest Grove Leader, after mid-January. Here's my two cents: Although one might be tempted to move The Hillsboro Argus to The Washington County Argus, I would argue that it makes more sense to start a new article, because moving the Hillsboro Argus would take a paper with a very long history and a relatively well-developed article and fold it into a new article while leaving the Forest Grove Leader – a paper with a relatively very short history – as a standalone article, which doesn't make sense to me. Thanks largely to your work, the two articles are relatively well-developed compared to most newspaper articles for mid-sized (or smaller) cities on Wikipedia. If they were stubs, I'd say just move one and merge the other, but they are not. Both deserved to remain as standalone articles that simply point to the new article about their successor, the Washington County Argus. Keeping the three separate would also allow better categorization. The new article would be very short initially, and might even have to be a redirect (to the Hillsboro Argus) initially, but we already have at least two articles from third-party sources: the Hillsboro Tribune one you cited and the (closely related) OPB story, so there should be enough to establish notability before long. WW will probably also cover it soon. I don't think I have enough interest to create that new article myself, but I figured you might be interested in my thoughts on this, considering that I'm one of the few other editors who has spent much time (in recent years) working on WP articles about Portland-area newspapers. I agree that the existing articles should maintain their integrity and a new article created for the new paper (sadly not surprising given the mismanagement of Advance since they bought the Argus). I actually first read about it in a Hillsboro Round-up, the last one according to the article, so we will have several sources to start with. I would be interested in writing the article, but I am too busy right now starting a business on the fly. I hope things will calm down by the end of next month, but who knows. Thanks. Just to close-out this thread, before you archive it, I'll note that – as I'm sure you know – the Washington County Argus lasted only 14 months before it, too, was discontinued—this time without replacement. I updated the Hillsboro Argus article at that time, to reflect that development, and there's clearly no longer any case for creating an article for the short-lived and very thin Washington County Argus. – SJ Morg (talk) 21:25, 8 June 2017 (UTC)

The reason was left in the edit summary, which is to review WP:ELNO. I do not know if every single one of these "articles" was written by someone from Phoseon, but most were, meaning they would not be used as sources and thus would be links to be avoided. I will assume you have some sort of relationship with Phoseon and adding these was an attempt to market the company, which is something Wikipedia is not for. If these were links to legitimate media coverage of the company by third-party, independent sources, those would be fine. But not basically spam. Aboutmovies (talk) 16:33, 11 January 2016 (UTC)

Portlandia statue

Your objection on 9-15-15 to Scottdoesntknow's inclusion, in the Portland article, of a photo of the Portlandia statue/sculpture in front of the Portland Building is without substance.

The Portlandia sculture is in an unquestionably public location therefore no one can object to displaying/reporting it unadulterated in a journalistic/non-profit-educational endeavor such as Wikipedia. Now if Wikipedia-editor/photo-publisher Scottdoesntknow had cribbed someone else's photo of Portlandia and tried to pass it off as his own, that'd be a problem - proper attribution must be paid - but it appears in this instance that Scottdoesntknow was merely linking to a photo already (and still) published at Wikipedia's Portlandia article, which is perfectly fine. Once a photo's publication passes copyright muster anywhere in Wikipedia it's OK to publish it anywhere in Wikipedia.

To quote Copyright Law of the United States of America - Title 17, U. S. Code:

"§ 120 . Scope of exclusive rights in architectural works63

(a) Pictorial Representations Permitted.—The copyright in an architectural work that has been constructed does not include the right to prevent the making, distributing, or public display of pictures, paintings, photographs, or other pictorial representations of the work, if the building in which the work is embodied is located in or ordinarily visible from a public place."

Are you alleging a violation of the sculptor's copyright of his sculpture, or are you alleging that Scottdoesntknow is passing off someone else's Portlandia photograph as his or her own? Since Scottdoesntknow in the Portland article appears merely to have been linking to Sreejithk2000's photograph used with Wikipedia's Portlandia article and not claiming the photograph as his own, I really don't see an attribution problem here.

You cannot object to anyone else's publication of (nor claim royalties from) an unadulterated, non-disparaging non-commercial photo that is the photographer's own work and is of an item or phenomenon plainly visible to the public. One cannot copyright the public's view regardless of any artist's claim to objects in that view.

Furthermore, copyright law in the U. S. is a civil matter requiring the copyright owner to prove how he or she has been damaged by any violation of his or her copyright. In the case of publication for non-commercial purposes of an unadulterated photograph of a work on public display, that would be damn near impossible to do. I am a copyright attorney and know all about copyrights, but you clearly do not. The problem is, you don't understand Wikipedia's policies nor apparently Wikimedia Commons' policies regarding what is a fair use photo. In fact, since you are quoting as to an architectural work you clearly do not understand that under copyright law a statue is not an architectural work (there is some argument as to if a work is physically integrated into a structure, which is not the case with this statue), see §101):

An “architectural work” is the design of a building as embodied in any tangible medium of expression, including a building, architectural plans, or drawings. The work includes the overall form as well as the arrangement and composition of spaces and elements in the design, but does not include individual standard features.

“Pictorial, graphic, and sculptural works” include two-dimensional and three-dimensional works of fine, graphic, and applied art, photographs, prints and art reproductions, maps, globes, charts, diagrams, models, and technical drawings, including architectural plans. Such works shall include works of artistic craftsmanship insofar as their form but not their mechanical or utilitarian aspects are concerned; the design of a useful article, as defined in this section, shall be considered a pictorial, graphic, or sculptural work only if, and only to the extent that, such design incorporates pictorial, graphic, or sculptural features that can be identified separately from, and are capable of existing independently of, the utilitarian aspects of the article.

As in, this photograph of a sculpture would infringe on the Portlandia statue sculptors' copyright (see also Portlandia (statue)#Copyright). Now that you hopefully understand that, I suggest you read Wikipedia:Copyrights and WP:COPYVIO and WP:FAIRUSE and come back with an apology for wasting my time for something we have dealt with many times over the last ten years or so for this particular sculpture. There are several things that standout. First, your WP:LEDE does not properly summarize the article, and only consists of a single sentence for an article with nine main sections. As to the sections, we frown upon single paragraph sections. One or two as an exception would be fine, but I think five are here. Try to consolidate, and try to use more generic titles to match what we do in biographies (such as early life, career, later life). With the amount of text, I would guess about five sections (maybe a sub-section or two in some) would suffice. Not really a big factor as to getting to B class, but try not to start too many paragraphs and sentences with "In 19XX" as it tends to make it look like a timeline, for example instead of "In 1914 the Fearn’s started another trip, this time across China to Russia..." go with "The Fearns started another trip in 1914, this time across China to Russia..." (not there is also a typo in the original of Fearn's, where there would not be an apostrophe. Lastly, for the references, see WP:CITE to combine the identical references using the <ref name="citation name"> parameter. Also, for the one instance where you put in distance, use {{convert|60|mi|km}} so those who use metric will see a distance they can relate to, 60 miles (97 km). Lastly, it needs a brief copyedit, as there is at least one instance of a space before the footnote, a Dr Polk instead of Dr. Polk, and we avoid many abbreviations, such as USA. Thanks for the update. Fearn was a pioneer and an inspiration to many female doctors who followed. My version tells her story and if I had not spent weeks researching her life and obtaining reference books and materials her tale would not have been told. So I'll leave it to someone better than me to re-edit. I think this rating system is demotivating for editors who are trying to write accurate articles about people who did make a difference - especially when there are so many inaccurate works on Wikipedia that should be getting attention. I am not against criticism when it comes to editing because any author knows that work should be reviewed before it is published because punctuation does get missed and spelling errors do occur. However the current system is like being at school again - "should try harder" and appears to be subjective. I keep referring back to Wikipedia:WikiProject Biography/Assessment to see where I went wrong and cannot connect your comments to the guidance given in this.

OK, so I've had my moan, I'm trying to get together information on the next project and will remember your comments when writing it.

First, if you are editing for the rating, then you are editing for the wrong reason. I have written hundreds of articles and will often disagree with the assessment. As to the criteria, the problem is that most of the criteria is not really on that page, but there are links to the criteria (mostly after you click on the show for the detailed criteria in the chart). And yes, every rating system is subjective, whether it be in how it is executed or in the design of the criteria. Here's what I'm struggling with: WP's policy on portraits for bios of living people indicates fair use is not appropriate. However, most of Red Star's art photographs qualify as self-portraits. I'm hoping you can enlighten me, as I have lost enough sleep over this to be fighting off early-onset dementia. Taking a picture of the picture does not transform it. If you used your cell phone to take a picture of the artist and the doll (as in they are standing in front of you, well not the doll), then no copyright issue as the picture (potentially for the doll). The biggest issue right now is almost all of your sourcing is to case law and statutes, or in other words primary sources. The problem with that is you are interpreting these, not a secondary source. Project assessment

Just a quick hint, but, because the class rating of articles is the same for all projects, except for a very few that don't use a particular rating, you can add the same class rating for all the project assessment banners when doing any other. I've been doing assessments for nearly a decade, and while I agree that the ratings should be uniform, in practice I have come across instances where some projects did not agree with me. That registration info is from 1985, not from the original filing. The SOS updates that info each time. If this was a newer corporation you would be able to click onto the articles of incorporation. Not to mention, being president does not mean you are a founder, let alone the only founder. All of the literature I have see (specifically say the cited reliable sources) say co-founder. Int'l schools

Thank you for adding some entries to the Template:International schools in the United States! A few things:

1. Portland Japanese School is a hoshuko or part-time school, not a full-time Japanese school, so I removed it from the template (the part-time Japanese schools have a template here: Template:Japanese weekend schools in North America)
2. The International School of Portland isn't recognized as a Spanish international school by the Spanish government (I listed such schools at Template:Spanish international schools) nor, to my knowledge, does it follow the curriculum of Spain, so I removed the Spanish flag

Honestly, the article topic was never likely notable by Wikipedia's standards. Sometimes it just takes time before someone gets around to proposing an article be deleted. Copyright on photos before 1923 in US

Hi, again, Aboutmovies,

I'm curious about the copyright status of photos from before 1923 that have been published in digitized museum collections. For example, the Lane County Museum has an archive of photos that have been watermarked with the museum name, implying the Museum holds copyright, even on photos taken before 1923. So does US copyright law on antique photos refer to the date a photo is first published (in this case published in this century by the Museum in digital form), or the date the photo was originally taken?

US copyright is all (or almost all) based upon the date of publication, not creation. Many museums take in the physical photographs via donations and then think they own the copyrights, or like in your query, are claiming copyright to items that are no longer in copyright. Anything first published in the US before 1923 is now in the public domain, regardless of if someone else now claims a copyright. If you want to mess with them, ask for the copyright registration materials, which registration was required pre-1976. Aboutmovies (talk) 16:55, 21 November 2016 (UTC)

It was not discussed. Assessments are not discussed or consulted on, unless it is via a formal process for GA or FA status. If you want tips for improving it, here they are: Footnote 7 is a bare reference; footnote 3 lacks an access date; the EL section should be removed as if an EL is used as a source it does not go into an EL section; the W:LEDE section should be expanded; then overall it needs expansion, for instance his date of birth and date of death are missing as are the years as to the moves; lastly the career section jumps around instead of chronological order which gets confusing. The WikiProject Oregon template seemed like that was a somehow objective judgement but it's rather your subjective opinion dropped within a minute in a 45 aracter template. I usually only do this to obvious marketing accounts that I want lo better leave the project anyway. Is this standard prcedure and standard tone around here, or is it just your style of treating fellows? Your English is a bit hard to follow, so what exactly is your complaint about; the initial assessment rating on the talk page, or the notes above? If it is the initial assessment, a quick initial rating is quite standard, if even ever assessed. In my over 10 years of editing and likely close to 100,000 assessments, most do go quickly and come down to the simple Stub, Start, C, or B class rating (anything above those four requires a special process). If your issue is as to the brief synopsis of issues, what you get above is far more than than most assessments, unless of course you go through the formal process of GA/FA. We simply do not have time to write a treatise on every assessment, especially when there are obvious issues and, it is just a rating (You can request a new one here). Roughly 10% of articles are unassessed, meaning well over 500k still need assessment, thus time is of the essence. Aboutmovies (talk) 03:31, 7 December 2016 (UTC)

Come on, just a rating. You would not feel like being under time pressure if those ratings weren't important to anybody. And it is also not just a rating for someone whose effort has been rated. I don't know how much time you invest into writing a new article. I try to find and doublecheck independent sources. That takes a while. Especially, as English is my second language. I am not a high-end author, never will be, in any language. But I usually do a decent job when redacting, expanding exiisting articles, or when starting new articles. Sometimes I even get a little thank you from someone. I never expect that but it's nice if it happens. Your slap in the face was the opposite, and your explanations above are not helping. "If you want tips for improving it, here they are" says it all.

Do you read what people get in their face? "The article is substantial, but is still missing important content or contains much irrelevant material. The article should have some references to reliable sources, but may still have significant problems or require substantial cleanup." Wow, I didn't know I was that bad.

Sorry for writing a poor article. Sorry for my poor English. Sorry for wasting your time. Sorry for being ungrateful and for wanting to understand how and why my contribution has been belittled the way you did that.

What happened to the good old Wikipedia style of co-authoring articles? Fixing minor formal "mistakes", like those you listed is no longer en vogue? What happened to the good old Wikipedia discussion pages where people used to talk to people and told them what they were missing. What happened to you, Aboutmovies?

I would call this a truly poor article - mostly copied from this primary source, promotional tone, dead links, a bare list of (few) publication titles, no dates, no ISBN. Now, I regret that I updated and expanded that article. I regret that I googled for more information on the guy's best buddy, and that I thought the available information about Art could make a decent new article. We are all volunteers here, and how we choose to spend our time is up to us. I spend a lot of time giving an initial assessments to articles, as the backlog on BIO articles is huge. I simply do not have the time to take 20 minutes to fix every error or provide an essay on how to make each article better. I often take the time to bold the title, fix quick formatting errors, and add missing categories. But I have my own business where I have to make money to feed my family, so I cannot spend all day on Wikipedia.

Also, FYI, most initial assessments are stub or Start class, few even get to C, and very few get to B. You should be happy you got C class, as they only thing higher is B. So, you have to compare your work to B class articles, and it is not yet there. It is not a bad article, just not B class. I have many articles that are only start or C class, and in fact there is one that will likely only ever be a C class at most because there just is not enough source material to meet the B class criteria. Don't regret contributing to Wikipedia, but perhaps understand it is just a rating, and if you are here for the ratings, then re-consider why you are here. I get my satisfaction from look at the page view statistics for the articles I started, seeing how many people have viewed them. Not some somewhat arbitrary assessment. Rush Alzheimer's Disease Center (RADC)

Hi Aboutmovies,

I wrote the RADC article.

I don't think the category Universities is accurate. The RADC is a research facility located in a medical center (the University is the teaching component and has nothing to do with the research or researchers at the RADC, who do not interact with students at all).

References to scientific research, alzheimer's centers in US, US government sponsored research (NIH/NIA), and religious orders (like School Sisters Notre Dame referenced in the Nun Study article) is much more useful.

The RADC's website is on the rush.edu website, so, there is a connection. Just because they do not interact with students does not mean there is not a connection, or that being in that category implies it is an academic part of the school. In late November an edit was made by this editor, rating the article Ralph Deleon a quality of C. What important content is missing from this article? The early life is very short, which covers approximately 20 years of his life, while the other section covers only a few years. For instance: When (date) and where (city, not just province) was he born; who are his parents; where in the US did he move; which Ontario HS (I know it links to t he presumably correct one, but it needs to be spelled). Then, a good copy edit, "but had withdrew from the university" should be withdrawn to match the tense of had. It is not far from being B class, but needs some additions. @Aboutmovies: Unfortunately, the weight of reliable sources does not provide significant information about the years that subject of that article was a minor, whether that was in the Philippines or the United States. I appreciate your work patrolling new articles, but I've noticed you almost always rate mine "Start class". The latest is Ethan Siegel. I know it's not beautiful prose, but please check the Start class criteria - I see you're using User:Kephir/gadgets/rater and it may be misleading. Start class suggests major referencing issues (few reliable sources), poor spelling and grammar, obvious incompleteness, lack of use of MoS, unencyclopedic tone - and I don't think that's fair for most of my new articles or for this one. I can write just fine (bar the occasional typo), I aim to be pretty exhaustive in finding online sources, I try to use reliable sources, avoid unverified content, use inline cites for every fact, and I add wikilinks and categories (thanks for adding one!) I can see completeness might keep this from B-class and I often skip infoboxes, but I think it meets C-class. Please consider more C-class ratings. Thanks. Fences&Windows 18:33, 3 January 2017 (UTC)

I actually do not patrol new articles. I assess lots of articles, have been doing it for more than a decade, and have done probably around 100,000 of them. So, I am well aware of the criteria. Here, your article has one whole sentence about the person's "early life" or about 20 years, which is roughly half their life. This is a biography, meaning an article is about the person and not just what is notable. That means it is not "substantial" and thus does not meet C class. Now, since I get this comment/argument all the time (see prior comments above yours) is that all the RS out their have been mined and that is all there is. That may well be true, but that does not mean this article is then B class or even FA. There are plenty of articles out there that will only ever be a stub because the person lived 4000 years ago and all we have is all we will ever have. A good example that I point to is David Hill (Oregon politician) which was I believe my first article. I have exhausted all available sources and it is as complete as it can be based on currently available RS, but it should only be a start class article due to it lacking a lot of information about his life (I note it was raised to C class, but I had nothing to do with that decision). That rating has no reflection upon my writing abilities (though there are now some reference errors as the templates have changed over the years), and everything to do with the available information. So, if you want C class, find more on the first half of their life, such as who were his parents, siblings, etc. Then, clean up the bare URLs used as ELs and a ref. How to make an article good

Aboutmovies,

I came upon your user page via your recent edit of William Barton Rogers. I like your attitude toward WP, as evidenced in your Wikiterpretation™s. I'd like your advice. I don't edit an enormous amount, but I pay a good deal of attention to those articles I do edit. The most important article I edit is Frederick Douglass, and I mostly stick to the sections on his early life and the lede. (I live 2-3 miles from the site of his grandmother's cabin, where he was probably born.)

The article is long, and rambling, and frequently the target of editors with a particular agenda (and then there are the edit wars over what year he was born, which he did not know, and of which there is no record). The article is currently rated B-class and a level-4 vital article. I would like to move it toward being a good article, but the task is a bit overwhelming (as is, currently, my personal life). Any suggestions you would have as to how to approach this goal, and how to break it up into small, manageable pieces I could tackle in an hour or three each weekend would be, by me, greatly appreciated. Paul, I would start with reviewing WP:WIAGA. Then, as to the article itself, here are a few areas I can see improvement without an in-depth review:

Citations/footnotes: Clean them up to eliminate a few errors and to ensure full, consistent formatting.
External links/further reading: Way too many. First, see WP:ELNO to see which ones can be outright removed, such as any used as sources. Then if there are still too many, discuss it on the talk page.
In arts and literature/Legacy and honors: Prose is preferred to lists, so turn it into a paragraph, and likely remove unsourced items.

A lot of the rest is likely stylistic choices as to how to approach the topic, as in what order. After addressing the above, try submitting it to the league of copyeditors for a review. Good luck. Aboutmovies (talk) 20:05, 19 January 2017 (UTC)

Not to sound too rough, but it is on the low side of C class. Items to locate and add: Where was she born, as in city (or village); when was she born not just year; who was her mother; any siblings; what was the name of her son and years of life for him; and that just covers the very short background info. The lede also would need to be expanded.

That then takes us to the footnotes, which need a lot of work. Most are woefully incomplete to allow someone to find the info (author info, page numbers, article titles, etc.), and we do not repeat the same citation over and over. Instead, name the ref and use it in that manner so that one such as " The Essex Review, 1951" is listed just once, but used four times. Hope that helps. Who were his parents? Who were his siblings? And in general anything happen his first 30 years besides birth and OSU? Anything more about his own nuclear family besides his wife's name and that they had a couple kids (such as names of the children)? You also have a lot of short, stubby paragraphs. I may or may not have access to the information, but I have zero motivation to look for it. Of course, I get the feeling your point is more of you don't have it and don't think it is important to have, thus why would that effect the rating? For the most part, those items are not notable, but this is a biography, so you need them to have a complete bio. Well, I think have identified the wrong copyright license tag while uploading 5 images of artwork created by Amanda Snyder. Portland Art Museum has many of her works available in their Online Collections with the notice, "No known copyright restrictions". Using the Commons Upload Wizard, I thought the correct license was the CC0, but I now think that was an error, and I need a template specific to the Portland Art Museum, like the ones in this category. @Fitindia: I'm confused, as I do not see a request that person's name be removed from the discussion. The blurb on the talk page came from a section removed from the article, but I see no request or reasoning why it should be removed from a talk page given standard talk page protocol and etiquette. Regardless, I was not involved in the removal, I simply offered an opinion that the blurb removed was properly removed. I would suggest the talk page simply be archived so it is not easily located, but still there in case the issue came up again. Aboutmovies (talk) 15:36, 16 June 2017 (UTC)
