Welcome to Bacon Challenge 2011
Hi, Acather96, and welcome to the Bacon Challenge 2011! The goal of this event is to expand as much bacon-related content as possible, so get started whenever you can! Securities Industry Association article
For some days before you initiated a CSD G11 speedy deletion of this article, you may have been aware, I'd been working to (at least) get the correct name on the article. The article discusses the Security Industry Association, not the now-merged-out-of-existence Securities Industry Association. I had placed, finally, in pursuit of this goal, a request at Wikipedia:Requested moves#October 12, 2010 the day before you initiated your action.
I've not been a big fan of the article as it stands. My hope has been that getting it correctly named would at least give a bona fide platform on which to improve. In fact, I came to the article from the "securities" industry side and what's now the Securities Industry and Financial Markets Association, rather than the "security" industry side. I do think they are all important articles to have, including maybe an article on the real, now-historical Securities Industry Association, and much hope they are all improved or created as such. The heavy promotional content is regrettable, one element to be improved certainly.
I don't know if you have any opinion on the renaming itself but I encourage you to give any opinion or feedback in regards the renaming by following the Requested moves link above or going straight to Talk:Securities Industry Association. Other comments can of course come to me directly, here or at my page.
For what it's worth, there's another recent tangent of this discussion here. And I'm now headed to DGG's talk page to cover that base, too. DGG declined the speedy delete.
I'm spelling everything out at each step here because this is a pretty complicated process which I almost feel defeated me once before on this same article some months or more ago. I appreciate your forbearance, and attention to the degree it interests you. Swliv (talk) 14:15, 19 October 2010 (UTC)
- Hi Swliv. First of all, apologies for my speedy tagging, in retrospect I should have probably not have been so hasty. Thanks for taking the time to notify me and explain in such detail whats been happening, much appreciated. I'll comment on the Requested Move soon. Thanks, Acather96 (talk) 19:38, 19 October 2010 (UTC)

You have tried to delete my article
Dear sir, I am writing to explain my strong view on the way you are trying to delete the theorem I helpfully added to the wikipedia archive. Do you have a science degree sir? No? thought not. Then maybe you shouldn't try to delete a perfectly plausible theorem just bgecause it didn't come up on google. I seriously reccomend you rethink the deleting of this article. Yours sincerely, Dr A Thompson —Preceding unsigned comment added by Dr A Thompson (talk • contribs) 19:26, 24 October 2010 (UTC)
- I've deleted this as an obvious hoax as nothing turns up in Google and at best, this is original research. Applying {{db-hoax}} would have been slightly quicker. And I suggest Dr Thompson learns how to spell, otherwise he stands little chance of being taken seriously as a cosmologist. Rodhullandemu 19:41, 24 October 2010 (UTC)
My Grasshopper (robot weather station) page and the tags
Dear Acather96,
Saw the two tags. Sort of expected them. But I am stumped how to link them or categorize the page. I have written/researched defence articles in the 1980s and 1990s for various publications, and I thought I had read about everything the USAF done during the Cold War till I came across the subject while trolling the old Popular Science publications -- ie it is the one ex link with the photos and drawings. I know it needs to be on WP, but how I do not know. I have some WP helpers on WP and called on them to look at it. But if nothing is done in a few days, take it down. I understand. I am not trying to dodge the WP rules, just can't figure out how to bring the subject into the WP fold properly. Jack Jackehammond (talk) 09:15, 25 October 2010 (UTC)
- Btw, have you ever figured out why the vandals are so drawn to the Panama Canal, Hand Grenade and Bombs pages? They keep me pretty busy reverting their trashing. I wonder if it is a college prank? Jack Jackehammond (talk) 09:18, 25 October 2010 (UTC)

- Hi Jack, and thanks for contributing :) First of all, the article won't be deleted because of any of those tags, they are just tags for improvement. You're not doing anything wrong. I also find it difficult to categorize articles, and I usually leave them to be dealt with by the task force. It takes a while, but gets done (and done well) in the end. Later on today, I'll add links and remove the tag at the top, also look into adding an image. And thanks for the heads up regarding the vandalism, will take a look now. Thanks, Acather96 (talk) 09:27, 25 October 2010 (UTC)

Could you look at the Levee page ex links
Dear Acather96, I just added a very good link on an engineering trick the flood engineers used to protect the river levees against seepage and collapse. And to be honest, with the exception of my new ex link, only one other ex link deals with the construction and history of levees. The rest of the links are agenda driven and are hijacking the page or politics and the New Orleans flood. Jack Jackehammond (talk) 09:50, 25 October 2010 (UTC)
- I've added a post to the external links noticeboard for wider review. Thanks, Acather96 (talk) 13:39, 26 October 2010 (UTC)
- Thanks for looking into it. Probably they will leave it. Also, I walked into a spinning buzz saw it seems. While looking for some photos that could be posted as an ex link on the WeeBee (worlds smallest aircraft) I came across a nice article about ocean currents effecting climates every couple of centuries in a 1949 issue of Popular Science by Rachel Carson. I am not a fan of Carson, but the article has lot of illustrations and maps that made it easier for the layman to understand the theory. So I put the article as an external link on Climate Change page. BOOM! According to a friend of mine it is almost a full civil war on WP over that page. So I cleared out of Dodge fast and am never going back to that page! <GRIN> I think I will try and find more peaceful pages like the one on the various Pakistan-India Wars since 1947. - Well, the ArbCom had a four month case regarding climate change, and all climate change related pages are subject to discretionary sanctions. That explains the boom :) Acather96 (talk) 08:04, 27 October 2010 (UTC)

I think that we need to come to some kind of consensus regarding the 3 or 4 support votes. Personally, I think 3 is fine as long as no opposes have been made. Or maybe we should just forget the 3-4 supports thing, leave each nomination open for a certain length of time and judge consensus then. Acather96 (talk) 06:17, 30 October 2010 (UTC)
- You need to stop closing nominations that havnt had there 7 day required wait. You closed the garnet(rock nomination) after one day instead of 7. I know it had 4 support but we still follow that rule. Spongie555 (talk) 06:50, 30 October 2010 (UTC)
- Sorry but where does it say about a 7 day requirement? I'm trying to help with the valued pictures project, I've been going and closing lots of old nominations and helping out, and all I get is a complaint. Anyway, you're probably right as you've been doing this longer than me and I apologise. Acather96 (talk) 06:55, 30 October 2010 (UTC)

The Bollweevils
Many thanks for your input into the Bollweevils page. I've now added internal links, as suggested. I created the page following a link from the Vinyl Solution Wiki page and would like to lose the (Group) suffix so that the pages comes up from simply typing "The Bollweevils". I understand that there is another band of the same name who have a page, so disambiguation would be required. Any idea how to do this? Removing Content
Hi Acather, I'm trying to remove content from my old company -- Big White Tiger LLC -- to comply with a legal settlement. Sorry -- can't figure out how to continue the conversation
Hi Acather, We are under a legal requirement to remove all references to Big White Tiger LLC - I can't share details because that was part of the settlement. And, since the company is now fully out of business (you'll notice our much reduced web presence which will go away shortly) we would like to do this final cleanup. One of our friends posted this information several years ago and she's moved on, so now we're stuck. We're just trying to stay out of trouble. Does that help? Again, I'm clueless about how we go about it... Thanks, JeanN —Preceding unsigned comment added by 68.50.189.231 (talk) 15:46, 14 November 2010 (UTC)

It is acceptable in Wikipedia to post the "Need for Citation" warning and waiting a few days before deleting-- instead of just summarily deleting materials.
That is also a more sensitive and respectful approach to the issue concerning the subject matter is two US military wives of American casualties who also helped start a nonprofit to help families of casualties.

This is our school pic. (don bosco school, liluah) its no use deleting it because its actually evryone's right to use one's own school photo.— Preceding unsigned comment added by Soham dbl (talk • contribs) 09:16, 15 November 2010
- Hi Soham dbl, welcome to Wikipedia and apologies for the late reply. With regard to your statement that 'everyone has a right to use their own school photo', this is untrue. When you purchase a copy of your school photo, the copyright of the photograph still stays with the original photographer. By paying, you are in reality purchasing a license for one copy of that photo. By distributing it online, you are then infringing copyright because you do not have permission to do so, nor is the claim that you are the copyright holder correct. If you have any more questions, please don't hesitate to contact me. Thanks, Acather96 (talk) 21:10, 19 November 2010 (UTC)

Get going. The December 2010 Wikification Backlog Elimination Drive has begun. Please get started, as the drive aims to wikify over 2,000 articles this month. We're going to need all the firepower we can get, so please remind your friends to join up as well. article approval? topic: high-end conservatories
Hello,
I recently submitted an article pertaining to highend conservatories, which you denied in allowing to be published. The current article that has been written on conservatories, relates and places them into the same general catagory as sunrooms. I beg to differ and have included a photo of a sunroom and a photos of conservatories. Please let me know if these photos justify a seperate article, like the one that I had written, on the topic. Thank you.
conservatory photos: http://www.renaissanceconservatories.com/closerLook.asp?iGalleryID=25&iPageNo=1 http://www.renaissanceconservatories.com/closerLook.asp?iGalleryID=31&iPageNo=1 http://www.renaissanceconservatories.com/newsPopup.asp?cImage=estestest_6_lg.jpg http://www.tanglewoodconservatories.com/ourportfolio/glassdome.htm
Sunroom Photos: (This link is of google images of sunrooms. you will extruded aluminum and pvc sunrooms.) http://www.google.com/images?q=sunrooms&hl=en&prmd=ivmc&source=lnms&tbs=isch:1&ei=uQ8BTcXJBsH58Abo6anPBw&sa=X&oi=mode_link&ct=mode&sqi=2&ved=0CBoQ_AU&biw=1259&bih=496
I hope that these photos will provide enough information to allow "conservatories" its own category. The category "sunroom" is too broad of a topic. It can refer to patio enclosures, orangeries, greenhouses, and conservatories. The difference between each can be compared to only allowing the search topic "houses" to be written on, and rejecting topics on Tudors, Contemporaries, and Colonial styled homes. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Sunroom63 (talk • contribs) 17:30, 9 December 2010
- Hi Sunroom63 and welcome to Wikipedia :) To be honest, I'm not really that sure what you mean, as we have an article on conservatories as well as sunrooms, and both seem to be independent, and don't attempt to say that either are the same. Please feel free to add information to both articles, as long as you can verify what you say with reliable sources. Thanks, Acather96 (talk) 17:56, 9 December 2010 (UTC)

- Hi Bob. Well first of all, its good your experienced with wikimarkup and the like, so you can hit the ground running. Here on Wikipedia, we hve new page patrol, which is a community patrol that checks new pages, sometims tagging for cleanup or nominating for cleanup. With regards to vandalism and spam, we have the Counter-Vandalism Unit and WikiProject Spam, which may interest you.
- Tip: I advise you to go into your preferences, then Gadgets, and then to enable Twinkle, Friendly and HotCat. These three tools will help you immensely throughout your wiki-career. Thanks, Acather96 (talk) 16:17, 15 December 2010 (UTC)

- Hi Sboy365, and welcome to Wikipedia :) I'd love to adopt you, and am just wondering what you'd like to do on Wikipedia. It could be writing new articles, cleaning up and maintenance, fighting vandalism (bad edits) and spam (advertising), checking new pages. These are just a few ideas, so please give me an idea of what you'd like to do, and also, what your interests are in real life. I will try and match them to Wikipedia. Thanks, Acather96 (talk) 21:43, 12 December 2010 (UTC)

- Right, well, if you are interested in anti-vandalism, we have a Counter Vandalism Unit (or CVU for short). Could I suggest that you install [User:Lupin/Anti-vandal tool|Lupin's Anti-Vandal tool]] to get started. We also have WikiProject Spam, dedicated to removing spam. The Great Backlog Drive is something I'm part of, and you can work on virtually anything there. Category:World of Warcraft contains articles related to World of Warcraft, the same with Category:HTML and Category:JavaScript. Regarding your signature, please change it so it links back to your userpage and talkpage. You could maybe use something like this:

Hey, thanks for pitching in. Obviously I've been falling behind on it recently. Thanks for the cite cleanup. I was in a hurry to get something in there and was going to revist later. If you look at the history you'll see there is a bit of a problem with the original author who is having problems understanding copyright especially in relation to images. He had reduced this article to just a title so I put a bit of body back in before soemone tagged it for CSD. NtheP (talk) 12:00, 19 December 2010 (UTC)
- Thats OK, I like cleaning things up :). I've declined the speedy here, as I fail to see any advertising (I've explained fully in the edit summary). I'm quite experienced in copyright, so I will take a look at the image. Thanks, Acather96 (talk) 12:08, 19 December 2010 (UTC)
- You know what? This little collusion of yours is nothing more than obstructive mischief. It seems very perverse that one set of Wikipedians want to destroy my not-so-bad work, while another set want to preserve my not-so-good work. Daft, in fact. Weiterbewegung (talk) 14:18, 19 December 2010 (UTC)
- Hello Weiterbewegung. Please read WP:AGF and WP:CIVIL, if you have not already done so, and then put them into practice :) ! There has been no collusion, or 'obstructive mischief'. NtheP came to thank me for the work I had done cleaning up the citations. He also informed me of the speedy deletion tag on it, placed by yourself. I went to have a look, and found it to be blatantly false, surely you will agree now there was no promotional material on the page. I removed the tag, mainly citing criterion G11 which states that simply having a company as the subject of the article does not qualify it for speedy deletion, and then you brought it to AFD. Now a discussion is under way, and it is a fair one. I myself have volunteered to try and track down an expert to help improve the article. You really are very welcome here, don't get me wrong, but let me tell you no one has any hidden agendas, we are all just here to improve the encyclopedia. Thanks, Acather96 (talk) 09:17, 20 December 2010 (UTC)
- Good luck with that, all of it. I will not be starting any new or editing any existing articles, by the way, so the admonishments have not been assimilated. In any case, you clearly break your own rules by describing my assertions as ‘blatantly false’. I am, almost certainly, the only historian you will find that has the unique expertise and experience to properly compile histories of firms like DSG (I can see your lip curling from here). The problem is, in this case there are simply no sources.Weiterbewegung (talk) 16:34, 22 December 2010 (UTC)
- Hello, you seem to have got the wrong idea from that last message. I'm not trying to start an argument, I am remaining civil, and the links to our policy on civility and our guideline on assuming good faith were not punishments or put-downs, but advice. These two pages describe really the only good way to have a productive discussion, which would hopefully hence improve the encyclopedia, which is ultimately what we are all here for. Apologies if you were offended by my assertions that your deletion rationale was 'blatantly false', it was not meant as an offensive comment, but merely as what I perceived to be fact. The revision of the page you nominated for speedy deletion does seem to back up my argument, as there was no promotional material, only referenced fact, and 'lack of substance' is not a valid criterion under CSD. To be honest, I have no idea what the lip-curling part means - I'm not angry or annoyed, if that's what you mean. Its a shame if you wont be creating any new articles, especially if you really are an expert. While experts still have to cite sources to back up their claims like everybody else, their knowledge is important and useful, and its good to 'free it up'. Also, subject experts may be able to help with some of the articles Category:Articles needing expert attention. By the way, as you are fairly new to Wikipedia, I'd just like to let you know that I am a member of the Adopt-A-User program, and would be more than happy to adopt you if you wish to. Thanks, Happy editing, and Merry Christmas :) Acather96 (talk) 18:52, 22 December 2010 (UTC)

Hi, I'm sorry but I've had to deny your request to use MDB to send a Christmas card because we've had some issues with users complaining about personal messages in the past, so, as the rules state, we only accept Wikipedia-related messages now. Sorry. - EdoDodo talk 13:19, 24 December 2010 (UTC)

I know this is stretching it, but I don't suppose my card would qualify for delivery, because it does encourage editors to reference a BLP, Wikify an article, or copy-edit one.
