Control copyright icon Hello Adcoffman55! Your additions to Berea, Kansas have been removed in whole or in part, as they appear to have added copyrighted content without evidence that the source material is in the public domain or has been released by its owner or legal agent under a suitably-free and compatible copyright license. (To request such a release, see Wikipedia:Requesting copyright permission.) While we appreciate your contributions to Wikipedia, there are certain things you must keep in mind about using information from sources to avoid copyright and plagiarism issues.

  • You can only copy/translate a small amount of a source, and you must mark what you take as a direct quotation with double quotation marks (") and cite the source using an inline citation. You can read about this at Wikipedia:Non-free content in the sections on "text". See also Help:Referencing for beginners, for how to cite sources here.
  • Aside from limited quotation, you must put all information in your own words and structure, in proper paraphrase. Following the source's words too closely can create copyright problems, so it is not permitted here; see Wikipedia:Close paraphrasing. Even when using your own words, you are still, however, asked to cite your sources to verify the information and to demonstrate that the content is not original research.
  • We have strict guidelines on the usage of copyrighted images. Fair use images must meet all ten of the non-free content criteria in order to be used in articles, or they will be deleted. To be used on Wikipedia, all other images must be made available under a free and open copyright license that allows commercial and derivative reuse.
  • If you own the copyright to the source you want to copy or are a legally designated agent, you may be able to license that text so that we can publish it here. Understand, though, that unlike many other sites, where a person can license their content for use there and retain non-free ownership, that is not possible at Wikipedia. Rather, the release of content must be irrevocable, to the world, into either the public domain (PD) or under a suitably-free and compatible copyright license. Please see Wikipedia:Donating copyrighted materials.
  • Also note that Wikipedia articles may not be copied or translated without attribution. If you want to copy or translate from another Wikipedia project or article, you must follow the copyright attribution steps described at Wikipedia:Copying within Wikipedia. See also Help:Translation#License requirements.

It's very important that contributors understand and follow these practices, as policy requires that people who persistently do not must be blocked from editing. If you have any questions about this, please ask them here on this page, or leave a message on my talk page. Thank you. — Diannaa (talk) 13:40, 30 June 2023 (UTC)[reply]

I have don’t a lot of research on this Ghost town. There are many historical maps showing that Berea existed in Franklin Coutny as well as an archived post office and even a college published research paper giving great detail on the town. Adcoffman55 (talk) 06:52, 26 December 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Done* not don’t. My apologies. Adcoffman55 (talk) 06:52, 26 December 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Making more GNIS mess

[edit]

Please do not source new articles to the GNIS and thereby add to the huge mess, that there already is in Wikipedia that has already taken years of cleanup effort by many editors, because of this unreliable and fault-filled computer database. Find proper sources like actual history books and do not source to the GNIS at all.

It will make things a lot simpler for you in the long run, because there is a lot of editorial resistance to the GNIS, up to and including outright Arbitration Committee cases, once we discovered that the world already knew that it was flawed years ago (before the Wikipedia editorship learned of this) and the huge amount of outright lies that Wikipedia now has that we are still discovering by the shedload years later.

Uncle G (talk) 09:41, 26 December 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Making Wikipedia pages are hard enough. Surely the edit is easy. But no. I just tried fixing that GNIS issue and it ruined the whole page. I’ve done extensive research finding these forgotten towns in Franklin County. I tried my best to make these pages and all I am getting is attacked for it by people who probably do not live within 1000 miles of Kansas. No one has been helpful at all on this page. There are historical maps claiming the town once existed as well as evidence that there was a post office in the town for a short time. Adcoffman55 (talk) 20:31, 26 December 2023 (UTC)[reply]

I believe you were trying to be helpful with that edit, but you removed a swath of infobox formatting and thereby ruined page readability. Please be in the habit of using Preview, as it will reveal such errors immediately. Thank you, Jessicapierce (talk) 22:26, 26 December 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Thank you for the good advice. My apologies for the mess up. I’m pretty new. You’re the first one to give me actual advice instead of harassing me. Adcoffman55 (talk) 22:28, 26 December 2023 (UTC)[reply]
I'm sorry to hear that's been your experience, but I can definitely relate. It's not the most user-friendly (or just friendly) site. I'm utterly self-taught and no expert, but if you ever run into trouble with formatting or the like, feel free to drop me a line and I'll see if I can help.
