IMPROVING YOUR PRAYER LIFE

[edit]

This article helps to explain the causes of decline in adhering to prayers and outlined some ways by which it can best best be resolved.

IMPROVING YOUR PRAYER LIFE

Prayer (Assalat) is defined as a means of connection or an intermediary between a servant and his Lord. Therefore, the soul aim of observing prayer is to remember Allah so as to be conscious of Him at all time.

"Indeed, I am Allah . There is no deity except Me, so worship Me and establish prayer for My remembrance." Q20:14

When you think much of the world or love worldly things than that of the heaven then your praying ability will gradually wade off and you begin to find it difficult to pray.

To improve the prayer life, one has to know;

1. What can build his God consciousness at all time (for the God conscious or Godfearing ones are those whose prayer life is healthy). Allah said in the Qur'an: "Verily the believers are successful. They who in their prayers are Godfearing." (Mu'minun verses 1-2).

“If you knew Allah as He should be known, you would leave people aside and take Him as your Companion.” – Ibn-al-Qayyim(rahimahullah)

2. The beauty of prayer itself.

You need to get closer to God by listening to Lectures (Tafsir), listening to Zikr (Allah's remembrance), always be in the company of the righteous. It will enable you achieve the reward of remembering and worshipping Allah in congregation and will also grant tranquility of the heart because of the saying of Allah Ta'ala: "Surely, with the remembrance of Allah, the heart attains tranquility." (Ar-Ra'd verse 28). The Prophet ﷺ said, "A man is in the religion of his friend, so each of you should be watchful of who he befriends." Therefore, if you keep much with friends who are more worldly than Godly, your prayer life tend to weaken. The reverse is the case if one keeps much with those who remember Allah and remembers one of Allah.

“If the human knew the pleasure of meeting Allah and being near to him, then he (human) would feel grief for being distant from him (Allah).” – Ibn Al Qayyim (rahimahullah)

The beauty of Prayer is that; first it is a great means of worship. All obligatory forms of worship were ordained here on earth except prayer which was ordained in the realm of the Most High, up above the heavens.

The prayer contains all the other pillars of Islam (Shahadah, Fasting, Zakat and Hajj) as well as remembrance (Tasbih), recitation of Qur'an (Fatiha and verses) and Salati Nabiyyi. As for the Shahadah, it is found in the Iqaamah; as for the Salati Nabiyyi, it is found in Sajda during Attahiyat; As for fasting pillar of Salat, we know we do not eat, drink and avoid all what we avoid during fasting when we pray; As for the Zakat, it is the water we used in making ablution for it is something we have spent from our possession in the way of Allah; The Hajj pillar however is in the facing of Ka'bah from anywhere we are, as the main aim of Hajj is to visit the Ka'bah otherwise we would have faced anywhere while praying since Allah is wherever we turn. Allah says; "Wherever you turn, you find the Face of Allah." (Al-Baqara verse 115).

Prayer is also a good and rehab tool that brings constant happiness and rest of mind to oneself, it helps to reshape and refines one's mindset towards good things and negate evil. And because Shaytaan won't want you to enjoy these virtues, you'll begin to miss prayers and Shaytaan will be giving you silly excuses to continue missing it. When you bear these in mind and abide by them, you tend to enjoy the development of your prayer life.

You'll observe whenever it's prayer time, that's the time that your discussion (or whatever you engage in) will be more sweeter and enjoyable. That's Shaytaan trying to pull you away from your God. And once the prayer time is over, the discussion dies down and that's when you'll now realised you haven't prayed. Whereas it's already late. That's the power accrued to Shaytaan.

Prayer is the greatest means of worship and thus, remembrance of Allah which repels Shaytaan from one. He ties knots of forgetfulness of Allah around the neck of his victims so whenever one gets up to pray, this knot is untied and whenever one is unable to pray due to heedlessness especially, he becomes the associate of that person. Allah said "And he whose sight is dim to the remembrance of the Beneficent, We assign unto him a devil who becomes his comrade." (Az-Zukhruf verse 36)."

Every human being have shaytaan in their body and the shaytaan of the body is your Nafs (soul). Yes, your soul. It's left to you to fight the shaytaan in you very strongly. Whenever you are stock in this kind of situation, just say "Auzubillahi mina-shaytaan rajeem" then forcefully stand up and go for prayers. By the time you do this for some days consecutively Inshaa Allah you'll emerge the winner over your Nafs.

When your soul tells you he loves something. First of all weigh it and see if it's against that which Allah loves. If it's that which Allah forbids then leave it, don't do it, but if it's that which Allah loves or doesn't forbids then go ahead and do it with ease and you'll see a lot of changes in your relationship with God. It's awesome Ma shaa Allah. Your prayer ability will improve immensely Inshaa Allah. May Allah make it easy for you and me and every other Muslims.

O Allah! Place our supplication among those whom You've guided aright in their supplications, those whose requests are granted and not withheld when they put their trust in You, those whose supplication are proportionate to Your Will. Aameen
