Conflict of interest editing[edit]

As noted anove, please do not directly edit the article but rather propose changes on the talk page - and please provide reliable, independent secondary sources when you do so. Thank you for letting me know how you see the situation. Unfortunately, in this case, I found it difficult to comply, partly because I had done a lot of work before I became aware of the guidelines on conflicts of interest. The main problem is that the original artical was very inadequate and not very accurate in places. There are still some inaccuracies in the last section which I had intended to replace by a more comprehensive History section.

I would guess that the original article was written by the Chairman of the Rodewald Concert Society, Dr Peter Dangerfield, who (despite his long service) is clearly not very knowledgeable about the early years of the Society. He presumably never disclosed his conflict of interest.

In hind sight, it might have been best if I had produced a completely new article and recommended it replaced the original.

I await your response on how best to procede in the circumstances.

The article is definitely inadequate but not for the reasons you suggest. It should only include information that can be verified by referenced to reliable, independent secondary sources. Content added by either you or others connected to the society from your own knowledge is considered original research. I have removed the "significant events" section because this appeared to be what it consisted of. Dear Melcous,

All the information in the section on 'Significat events' can be verified from independent secondary sources. I had intended to insert appropriate references. Some of these events were recorded by the original author, without reference to a source, and I just modified the format for concistency. The information which I have used comes from the online catalogue of the archives of the Rodewald Concert Society currently held in the Liverpool Record Office (ref 780 RCS) which I would see as a reliable independent secondary source. This catalogue was set up by a professional archivist, funded by a Hertiage Lottery grant. Most of the information in my section on 'Significant events' is about concerts and comes from concert programmes on sale on the day and/or pre-season brocures (which are slightly less reliable because of occasional last minute changes). The concert programmes were transcribed manually by a group of volunteers (including me) on to a form designed by the archivist and then digitised by other volunteers (including me). The digitised versions were then used by the Archivist to create the Catalogue. All the original items are available for public vue by appointement. For those unable to go to Liverpool, scanned copies can be ordered (for which there would be a small administrative charge). I hope therefore, that you will agree that the RCS online catalogue is a reliable independent secondary source. In many cases, there is additional evidence in the form of press cuttings reporting the concerts and all the local newspapers are available on microfilm in the Library. I would insert references to these where I know that they are available.

The information about bequests was, I think reported in the press, but I need to check this. In any case it must be available publicly from the Register of Probate.

I hope that, with this further information, you will restore the section which I created on 'Significant events'.

For the History section, which I have not yet written, I may need to refer to the minutes of AGMs and the committees in some cases. Whilst these are original sources, they are publicly available, as are all the archives (except for membership records because of the Data Protection Act) and catalogued online. I hope therefore that this will be acceptable, even if I cannot find other sources of the information. Please let me know before I spend time on writing this section.

I am sorry that I have been using the wrong procedures for editing the article on the Rodewald Concert Society (RCS). I must confess that I have found the Wikipedia porceedures difficult to follow. I will try to use the talk page in future.

My aim has been to ensure that the article on the RCS is accurate, up to date, and comprehensive. The only secondary sources, which I know of, about the Society in general, are limted in scope and not up to date. The RCS is an important musical organisation, of national significance, and with a long history. I am therefore keen that more information about it is publicly available. For some unknown reason, the Society's web site appears to have been discontinued, although it is still recorded on the Charity Commission web site. The original article was very inadequate and inacurate.

If it is true that the only secondary sources about the RCS are limited and not up to date then we have a problem, because wikipedia is based on what secondary sources say. This may mean that the article should not exist here, or the subject does not meet the notability requirements, if all that can accurately be said about it is what it says about itself.
