Invitation: Air Serbia – issue

Hi AlanM1, I was recently caught in the discussion about Air Serbia - Jat Airways relations. Please, if you are willing so, read my whole expose about this issue here: [1], and give your opinion on it, so we can move forward from this stalemate. Thanks! --AirWolf talk 15:25, 7 August 2014 (UTC)

The Pinkprint

It would be appreciated if you looked over and voted on the move request for "The Pink Print" to the "The Pinkprint". Up to this point there hasn't been a direct response as to which spelling was correct. Nicki Minaj herself clarified the question directly stating it was written, "The Pinkprint", (https://twitter.com/NICKIMINAJ/status/497117375712329728). And further publications have now labelled it correctly including Rolling Stone and Spin. Leave either your support or opposition for the move here: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Talk:The_Pink_Print#Requested_move_06_August_2014. HEIGHT

Hi I am joan lama.Let me explain.South part of kathmandu stands at elevation of 1400mtrs and it continously arises above 1400mtrs to north. What is the problem with to write average elevation of the city is 1400mtrs.See above part of the article,it is also written 1400mtrs.You should know kathmandu is ranked 16th position in capitals by it's elevation.I now request u plz correct it. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Joan lama (talkcontribs) 08:32, 14 August 2014 (UTC)

Multiple problems. If you look at your edit in the page history, it says:
(cur | prev) 2014-08-12T03:59:27Joan lama (talk | contribs)‎ . . (102,412 bytes) (-3,344)‎ . . (Geography) (undo | thank)
The (-3,344) means you erased 3344 bytes (characters) with your edit. You didn't just change 1350 to 1400 – you destroyed a chunk of the article as well, for no apparent reason. That's the primary problem.
Second, you didn't cite a source for your change. Because the 1350 in the Infobox matched the article (in one place), and you didn't cite a source, nobody saw the 1400 that was also present in the text.
Third, you didn't leave an edit summary to describe your changes.
The article had a discrepancy, giving two different elevations (1,350 and 1,400 m). Neither figure was directly cited. If they were, I would tend to believe the more precise one (1,350 m). However, searching for a reasonably reliable source, the best I can do is this, which claims 1,400 m, so I've corrected the article to consistently show 1,400 m. Just as importantly, I added a citation to show the origin of the figure.[3] —[AlanM1(talk)]— 10:40, 14 August 2014 (UTC)

RANKING METHOD

I disagree with the ranking method.Countries should be ranked on the basis of percentage of water resources. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Joan lama (talkcontribs) 03:06, 15 August 2014 (UTC)

@Joan lama: (Regarding List of countries by total renewable water resources) Percentage compared to what? From my lay knowledge, there are various consumers of water – agriculture, industry, power generation (that also feeds agriculture and industry), etc., so what to compare the water resources against is a complicated question.

However as I've tried to explain before, what you or I think does not matter. Wikipedia is a place where we put together and summarize things that have previously been published in reliable sources by others. It is not a place for original research. If you think it's important to rank water resources by percentage of total land, for example, you simply have to find an existing source that has published that information so you can use (and, importantly, cite) it. Note, also, that it would not be acceptable to find another table of land area for each country and then add that to the table and calculate the ratios – this would be considered synthesis. You need to find a source that has already presented all the data together and, hopefully, discussed its importance.

Remember, too, that it's not Wikipedia's job to promote anything, including the beautiful country that is Nepal. Tweaking statistics just to move it up in ranking is unfair to everyone. (Please do click on the blue wikilinks above to read more about each topic).

Also, when posting a new subject to a Talk page, be sure to add it at the bottom of the page, or use the "+" tab instead of the Edit tab and it will automatically place it there for you. Please also remember to sign postings to talk pages by adding ~~~~ at the end. These procedures apply only to Talk pages, not articles.

Thanks. —[AlanM1(talk)]— 07:04, 15 August 2014 (UTC)

Hi,thanks for your response but again i want to come back to ranking method. If you add total properties of indians and also add total proporties of people of singapur which one will be greater, obviously first one.Does this mean india is much more reacher than singapur. If not then why to follow the ranking of countries on the basis of water resources that mentioned in wikipedia? — Preceding unsigned comment added by Joan lama (talkcontribs) 10:15, 15 August 2014 (UTC)
@Joan lama: I don't know what you mean by "properties" or "reacher" (not an English word). The ranking in the table is simply the ranking in order of water resources – from who has the absolute most to the absolute least. It doesn't imply anything other than that. It doesn't mean one country is better, richer, prettier, or more moral than another. Is that the "problem" you are trying to solve?

Please put your response below mine (instead of in the middle of another section) and indent it properly (in this case by starting a paragraph with :::: (4 colons)) and don't forget to sign it by putting ~~~~ at the end.

SORRY,I meant to say 'richer'.I just mean to say that big country naturally owes more than small one.I am also not able to write just bellow you.why? — Preceding unsigned comment added by Joan lama (talkcontribs) 11:03, 15 August 2014 (UTC)
@Joan lama: If by "owes" you mean "owns" (as in possesses), yes a "big" country usually is richer than a small one. What does any of it have to do with ranking by water resources? As I said, if you think it's important to have a table that would show water resource volume divided by total area, population, or GDP of the country (which is what I think you're saying), you need to find a reliable source that has published it. Otherwise, Wikipedia cannot include it. Please re-read what I've written (now quite a lot) and the various pages I've linked to in order to understand this – it's a fundamental principle of Wikipedia that you must understand in order to be allowed to continue editing.

As far as the problems you are having with putting things in the wrong place on a page and removing large pieces of pages that you edit (including my talk page with your last edit), I wouldn't have any way of knowing what you're doing. I'd suggest going back to the links provided on your talk page, like Wikipedia:Tutorial and Help:Editing and practice editing in your sandbox until you are able to do so. Also take note of the Preview and Changes buttons, which you can use to see what the page will look like after/if you save it and what changes you have made. Proper use of these would show you that you've made a mistake (like removing a large amount of text) before saving it. You can also ask for help from people who normally work with new editors at WP:Questions and WP:Teahouse. —[AlanM1(talk)]— 11:40, 15 August 2014 (UTC)

hi,this is ravi sherpa.I don't think the meaning given of 'Nepalya'(not Nipalya)is correct. 'alaya' means house in sanskrit.Newars call 'Nepa' for 'Nepal'. 'kapya' means wool in newari from which 'Nepa' is derived. Sherpaofsherpas (talk) 08:17, 18 August 2014 (UTC)

@Sherpaofsherpas: I have rewritten the section completely, with information from several sources, which I've cited. Clearly, as with etymology in general, there can be no single answer, since many words are similar to each other. Mix multiple cultures and languages, and there will always be many answers. Unforgetting L.A. edit-a-thon on September 6

Unforgetting L.A. edit-a-thon: Saturday, September 6 from 11am to 4pm

Adding a template parameter

Since you're a template editor, could you add a parameter I've been wanting to add for a while now to Template:Infobox planet, adding Minimum Orbital Intersection Distance in this format:

| label42     = {{{moid|}}}
| data42 = Earth [[Minimum Orbital Intersection Distance|MOID]]

Thanks. exoplanetaryscience (talk) 15:11, 22 August 2014 (UTC)

@Exoplanetaryscience: Seems reasonable at first look. Looks like the normal unit is AU. Do me a favor? Post the request at Talk:Infobox planet to make sure nobody cares. Are there any other elements from the JPL or any other important databases that are missing? I'll try to get to it on the weekend. —[AlanM1(talk)]— 22:34, 22 August 2014 (UTC)
I posted a request there. Although the common unit is AU, it might also be useful to have an automatic conversion to Lunar distances if the MOID is less than 0.1 AU. I might do that myself, but I'm horrible at all but basic HTML. Thanks for the help. exoplanetaryscience (talk) 22:43, 22 August 2014 (UTC)

Help

Hi,AlanM1.would you like to help me to edit kathmandu where at the top of this article(i.e kathmandu) mention 3 districts kathmandu, bhaktapur and lalitpur.whent you go to link kathmandu, you again come back to the city kathmandu, not kathmandu district so I request you to replace kathmandu with kathmandu district — Preceding unsigned comment added by Baoshr (talkcontribs) 06:49, 29 August 2014 (UTC)

Done @Baoshr: Actually, it wasn't a link at all, if I'm looking at the same thing you are in the second paragraph. I changed it to:
[[Kathmandu District|Kathmandu]]
which links to the district while rendering like this:
Kathmandu
This is called a "piped link".
Additionally:
  • You once again added this in the middle of my talk page instead of at the end, just like you did at WP:ANI earlier today, and many times before.
  • You once again added this with a level-1 header (=Help=) instead of the correct level-2 header (==Help==), just like you did at WP:ANI earlier today, and many times before.
Both of these things are solved by using the "+" (or Create new section) tab/button instead of the Edit tab/button when creating a new topic on a talk page.
  • You once again did not sign your post (with ~~~~).
  • I once again reverted your change in the minimum elevation at Kathmandu District because the cited government source appears to say the range is 1262–3752 metres, based on Google translator, a list of Nepali numerals, the presence of "१२६२ मिटरदेखि २७३२", and the absence of "१३५०". Please do not make this change again without bringing a source to the article's talk page and discussing it.

Plus I think "Referred to as" sounds more proper here. Don't you think?

And Karmacharya caste is supposed to be a part of Chhathriya but usually Pancthariya. In hierarchy level of previous studies, most researches have put Karmacharya in the highest level of Pancthariya Shrestha caste, below the Chhathariya. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Slimshady995 (talkcontribs) 18:15, 11 September 2014 (UTC)

I prefer "called" vs. "referred to as" to save space and line-wrapping in tables. Also, it is much simpler, grammatically, which can be important in an article likely to be read/edited by people with limited skills in English.

Good work on those refs, though I'm afraid they show that each author may have different opinions on the subject. While the second source is similar to our table, the first source seems to have a lot of discrepancies at first look. I'll note that there is some confusion from the different indentation of lines that should normally be expected to be aligned (like the top-level capital roman numbers).

I suggest keeping further discussion at the article's talk page. —[AlanM1(talk)]— 10:39, 12 September 2014 (UTC)

Hello,

The user with this IP 178.91.253.182 has made several changes in Nordic Walking that have been reverted by Super48paul: https://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=Nordic_walking&diff=625956318&oldid=625956280

in Nordic Walking, I have reverted 'In Southern California, Nordic Walking is commonly called Prancercising'. This sentence is a lie. You can see it here: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Prancercise

Why have you reverted my change???

--Yalking (talk) 20:17, 19 September 2014 (UTC)

@Yalking: Probably lack of sleep . I see now that you actually deleted the sentence while I thought you added it.

FWIW, "big lie" is probably an incorrect characterization. As I said on your talk page, it's a trademarked term for one particular type of movement, but I'm sure it's been used to refer to other sorts of "unusual" walks. It's unlikely to be possible to prove where the term is used, and then there's the trademark issue that would have to be dealt with, all of which seems WP:UNDUE. —[AlanM1(talk)]— 21:13, 19 September 2014 (UTC)

Speedy deletion declined: Draft:سپتیک تانک

Hello AlanM1. I am just letting you know that I declined the speedy deletion of Draft:سپتیک تانک, a page you tagged for speedy deletion, because of the following concern: G1 does not apply to material not in English. Thank you. — Malik Shabazz Talk/Stalk 18:48, 15 October 2014 (UTC)

@Malik Shabazz: FWIW, it was deleted under G1 last time.

It's the creation of this sock group, who refuses to engage. Looking at the translation, other than the links at the end, it doesn't seem to be advertising. It is, however, material that probably belongs in the existing Septic tank article (which is the Google translation of the title), so perhaps it's an A10?

I tried to get them blocked at AIV, but it was declined by one of the more conservative admins, or it would now be a G5, right. It certainly doesn't seem like anything that should be added to the pile of stuff to be translated, as the CSDs suggest – there are plenty of English sources on the subject if someone wants to expand the article. Whatever it takes, it seems obvious that the user and the "article" are not positive contributors to the project. —[AlanM1(talk)]— 19:10, 15 October 2014 (UTC)

Lucas Cruikshank

I am curious as to where you think third party sources get their information, like age and birthdate, about notable people. I would assume the subject themselves. 117Avenue (talk) 02:25, 27 October 2014 (UTC)

@117Avenue: Hi. Depending on age, public records, governments, industry agencies (SAG, etc.), and sure, themselves. At Lucas Cruikshank, a user requested a cite, and you removed the tag, adding what does not appear to be a reliable source.

It says:

"August 29th! The same bday as Michael Jackson #funtimes RT @SarahStoffical: @LucasCruikshank when your birthday".

If I put on my secret decoder ring, I can guess that "RT @SarahStoffical: @LucasCruikshank when your birthday" means that "August 29th! The same bday as Michael Jackson" is @LucasCruikshank's response to being asked by @SarahStoffical when his birthday is. Aside from being cryptic to someone who doesn't routinely use Twitter, there is no year mentioned. More importantly, how do we know who @LucasCruikshank actually is? My understanding of the point of WP:RS is that there is someone with a reputation at stake and some sort of editorial control and responsibility to stand behind what they publish (and we then republish) – to give it a reasonable chance of being accurate. The original cite requester did not believe Twitter qualifies (at least in this instance) and I agree.

I looked at the other non-YouTube sources and didn't see his birthday in any of them, except for the first one (Lybio) which appears to be a transcript of the "Draw my Life" YT video, except that his middle name is not in the video (and it doesn't claim it is). It's not clear where the middle name came from or how it is spelled (Alan or Allan, as TV.com has it). Google has a lot more hits for Alan, so I'm going with that. It seems reasonable that the YT video is authentic, as that his main publishing medium, so I'm OK with it as a source, and will change the article. —[AlanM1(talk)]— 08:52, 27 October 2014 (UTC)

The LA Wikipedia community has a new Facebook group! Become a member to keep up to date with all of our upcoming events and to connect with local Wikipedians!

In addition, we have one upcoming event: the third Wik-Ed Women editing session will take place on Tuesday, November 11 from 6pm to 10pm at the Los Angeles Contemporary Archive downtown. This series of informal get-togethers is designed to encourage Los Angeles women-in-the-arts (though all are welcome!) to contribute their expertise to Wikipedia, specifically expanding content about women artists. Please RSVP here if you plan to attend.

I hope to see you there! Calliopejen1 (talk) - via MediaWiki message delivery (talk) 19:20, 4 November 2014 (UTC)
