Cat cleaning

Thanks for this - I must remember to look for those when blocking spammers! JohnCD (talk) 17:37, 2 October 2012 (UTC)

Easier to do cat cleaning than to clean cats. -- Alexf(talk) 17:58, 2 October 2012 (UTC)

I too want to thank you for this habit of yours! It's so reliable that I used to think "Alexf" was a bot! --Orange Mike | Talk 19:41, 6 December 2012 (UTC)

Thanks. The page CAT:UAA is there to remind us to keep checking after a user was warned on COI/company username issues. After a few days with no response I either block or clear if not a vio. Give them a few days to respond, contest it, or request a name change, no more. If the category is not cleaned periodically it grows unmanageable and becomes useless. Doesn't take but a few minutes a day to check and clean. -- Alexf(talk) 19:45, 6 December 2012 (UTC)

Jharnet

You wrote that User:Jharnet is not a policy violation. My assessment was based on [1] and [2]. Can you elaborate? NTox · talk 19:10, 2 October 2012 (UTC)

Ah. A mistake on my part then. I had several screens (browser tabs) open, looking at more than one account. This one sounded like a name: J. Harnet and personal names are allowed. No problem as the talk page user notice is still visible. I'll add it to the watchlist and wait for a few more days to see if they respond or otherwise edit. Thanks for the HU. -- Alexf(talk) 19:28, 2 October 2012 (UTC)

Kwort

I want to file a complaint against Kwort (talk). He/she wrote on my talk page and cussed at me in a Chinese dialect for undoing his/her useless edit on Yan Bingliang. I had undone his/her unhelpful and potentially libelous edit and warned them by posting a warning template on their talk page but they refuse to stop. After your ban was up, they continued vandalising. anon user (talk) 20:11, 3 October 2012 (UTC)

The place for this kind of report is at ANI. Note that he was not banned but blocked. There is a difference. Please remember to sign your posts in talk pages with four tildes (~~~~). -- Alexf(talk) 11:38, 3 October 2012 (UTC)

Brackenridge Park Golf Course - Advice and suggestions needed

Can you or another editor take a look at My Talk page (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/User_talk:Pauliedigi) to check the draft I have written for Brackenridge Park Golf Course. I would appreciate any advice, edits, and suggestions before I submit the page. Thanks for any help!

Pauliedigi (talk) 22:25, 3 October 2012 (UTC)

Why do you write an article in a Talk page? You should use a subpage instead. This has to be moved. That is not what talk pages are for. Other than that, I do not know the subject but on a quick perusal it looks good. -- Alexf(talk) 13:18, 4 October 2012 (UTC)

I put it on my talk page so it wouldn't get deleted like other articles have in the past. I will move it today, though. Thanks.

Pauliedigi (talk) 16:07, 5 October 2012 (UTC)

Actually putting it in your Talk Page may make it be moved faster as Talk pages are not for article material. That's what subpages are for. -- Alexf(talk) 16:54, 5 October 2012 (UTC)

Blocked Account Boca Raton Public Library

Hi, Alexf, Some time ago I addressed your concern and created the Sea Lark Account. The Boca Raton PL account was redirected to Sea Lark by wikipedia. I am the originator (and individual) and I gave full disclosure that I am an employee of the BRPL as was suggested by two editors in the editor review help desk. Please unblock this so I can continue with improving my article per all the editors suggestions. Thank you ````

Asking for help

First I'd like to sorry about my english :) I am not intermediate user of wikipedia, so for me it's hard to understand why my article about India company Careesma was deleted by You. Im not angry about that, but I'd like to now what should I do to make my article "legal" :) So far, I cant see why my text could be thought like a advertisment or something, and what is the difference between indication of importance Coca-cola company and indication of importance Careesma India?

Thank you in advance for helping me, Peter — Preceding unsigned comment added by 62.141.215.110 (talk) 13:05, 4 October 2012 (UTC)

It is not "indication of importance" but assertion of notability we look for. This is accomplished by using reliable sources. To answer your question, your article did not have much supporting cites or sources. As per The Coca-Cola Company, read the article and take a look at the sources section at the bottom. Next: What to do to have Wikipedia keep an article? Reading Your First Article might help. You should also keep in mind the cardinal rule. Can you explain your block of this user? I can only find one bad-faith edit in his history. Ryan Vesey 16:38, 8 October 2012 (UTC)

He created repeated entries multiple times to an article named DB Class E 320 in which all he added was the words "sexual intercourse" over and over again ad-infinitum. I did not see a user interested in helping the project. I see he is requesting an unblock stating that "as you can see by his edits he is not a vandalism-only account". Obviously what he is not telling you, because it is hidden that there are many other (deleted) edits that are blatant vandalism. That said, I might reconsider if he explains what he did (fesses up) and explains what he would do to help the project in the future (I would keep him in a watchlist for a while anyway). -- Alexf(talk) 17:56, 8 October 2012 (UTC)
I wish the software would display edits to deleted pages the same way it showed edits that were rev deleted. Thanks for letting me know. Ryan Vesey 18:17, 8 October 2012 (UTC)

Repeated minor vandalism by user Kevin12xd

Hi there,

User Kevin12xd seems to be up to his old tricks. In the past he has committed various acts of minor vandalism, and was blocked from editing (by you, I believe). Now that he's been re-instated, he's made this edit to my userpage, and one or two other random things (see his edit history. He then deleted the content of his talk page, presumably to remove evidence of the disruption he's caused. Here is a permalink to the revision before he blanked the page.

I'm not really sure what to make of it. I assume he was trying to trick me into believing that there was a legitimate problem with my username. Please leave a message on my talk page to let me know what you think!

Why has my page been deleted??

Why has my page been deleted?? i am new to wiki and understood that my page was about me and was NOT an article. There is nothing on my talk page to say it has been deleted but when i go to my user page i see 14:55, 18 October 2012 Alexf (talk | contribs) deleted page User:Skate WithoutIce (G11: Unambiguous advertising or promotion) how is it ambiguous advertising or promotion. I have already talked with someone on my talkpage about saying i do NOT work for any company and talked on my userpage of my own experiance and about me. please see this on my talk Hey Skate WithoutIce. Thanks for the response. I must admit when I first saw your username I thought you might be an employee of Off-Ice Skating, but I see I was mistaken. Wikipedia can be an overwhelming place at first, but you'll get the hang of it if you decide to stick around (and I hope you do!). As for the other external links on Inline figure skating, I actually think they are all spam, and should all be removed. You can read more about which links are OK and which should be avoided here. There are plenty of skating-related articles you can work on if you're interested. Inline figure skating in particular is in a dreadful state. Don't hesitate to leave me a message here (I'll watch this page) or at User talk:Braincricket if you want some help or advice. Cheers. Braincricket (talk) 10:41, 12 October 2012 (UTC)

So a little confused as to why it was deleted as its not an article that i was trying to publish it was my own user page about me.

please explain Skate WithoutIce (talk) 16:03, 18 October 2012 (UTC)

(talk page stalker)It was a blatant ad for a new sport, with external (spam) links to at least two websites. It was not about the human being behind the username in any way, except in the context of how that person enjoys this new sport (see adlinks for how to buy stuff). --Orange Mike | Talk 16:14, 18 October 2012 (UTC)

Orangemike already gave you the answer. It was an advertisement with spamlinks no less. It violated WP:UPNO and WP:NOTPROMOTION for starters. There's more but that should be enough for now. It is ok to talk a little about you in you user page but not to promote your business, hobbies or external sites you like. If you have any questions, feel free to ask. -- Alexf(talk) 16:33, 18 October 2012 (UTC)

So what your saying is i cannot mention a new sport. it was NOT an advertisement i talked about something i found and something im doing skating off ice, yes i mentioned the company, which is obviously not allowed ( yet different sports and football clubs are allowed to be mentioned on here) how else am i supposed to talk about this type of skating as its different to ice skating, but have no idea where you get that i was promoting at least 2 websites that you seem to think i own, I do NOT own any business or work for anyone. Thought Wiki was a free site where we could share things. But so far ive been accused of spamming and promoting a business i do not own and that i am not a human behind the username. I talk about something i loved as a kid and have found again at my age. I may not be smart but your comment above is rather confusing "It was not about the human being behind the username in any way, except in the context of how that person enjoys this new sport ???? yes it was about something i found and enjoy. So your saying on my page i cannot do a bio of myself. I came here to learn and to maybe help out with info on pages so far ive been shot down. All ive learnt is that what ever i say is wrong and gets deleted - even if its about myself Skate WithoutIce (talk) 08:18, 19 October 2012 (UTC)

Not at all what we are saying. Wikipedia (not Wiki as you call it. That is a type of software, of which Wikipedia is just but one example of). Wikipedia is an encyclopedia, not a a free site where we could share things. As an encyclopedia that anybody can contribute to, you understand that we need to have some rules. There is no problem with an article on a new sport, as long as it is notable and is supported by verifiable, independent reliable sources. In your case, you come with a username that talks about the same as a sport, immediately triggering username concerns as a possible advertiser and mentions a company of that name. If you want to contribute, and we do need good contributors, maybe reading Your First Article might be of help. -- Alexf(talk) 10:25, 19 October 2012 (UTC)

The reason for my user name i had already explained to Braincricket and why i put his response above. He was happy for my reason but you seem to disagree. please do NOT ASSUME i work for anyone. Assume= to take for granted; accept without proof;
I chose the user name skate without ice as its what i do how i skate as i do not have a local ice rink, i didnt realise that people had to think or ask and make sure you did not use a name that people would assume means you work for a company. Surely the company if they joined would use thier own name and not words that are similar. Skate withoutice is NOT the same name as the company who own the skates.
Maybe i should just not make any comment on here and delete my username account if you feel i am a spammer, which i am not. As i run forums (reptile) i am used to people constantly spamming so some thing i dont do! Skate WithoutIce (talk) 12:00, 19 October 2012 (UTC)

There is no problem with username once you explained. All it was is a first impression as the name sounds like a group account. No problems there now that I can see. No need to change from my point of view. I do not feel you are a spammer, after your explanations before today. Have a nice day. -- Alexf(talk) 13:10, 19 October 2012 (UTC)

Thank you Alexf although one should NOT have to explain why they chose the user name they did! So does this now mean that my user page can now be undeleted even if you take out the 2 so called website links you say were in there.!" external (spam) links to at least two websites" - i know i mentioned the commpany but did not know i mentioned at least 2 websites as you said above. As i did not keep a copy of what i had written - which i was still adding to i have no idea of which websites i was supposed to have mentioned. Skate WithoutIce (talk) 11:03, 22 October 2012 (UTC)

"one should NOT have to explain why they chose the user name they did". Yes, in the case it violates the username rules. "Can your page be undeleted?" Not to mainspace but it can be userfied if you request it. Let me know. Just be advised that I would strongly recommend you request a change of username if you plan to continue writing that article as it is still an indication of conflict of interest as it has the exact same name as your account, and will give you grief to no end with all page patrollers and admins. -- Alexf(talk) 12:02, 22 October 2012 (UTC)

Thank you. I have requested a username change to Linny40, not sure how long it will take to change, so how do i now request the above. Many thanks for being patient and helping me get this sorted! Skate WithoutIce (talk) 12:03, 23 October 2012 (UTC)

It might take a day or two depending on load. Bureaucrats are few and overworked. Keep monitoring the page for any issues or questions they may have. -- Alexf(talk) 12:50, 23 October 2012 (UTC) name change happened rather quickly  :) so now to get it userfied am i right in thinking you can now do that for me. Please make sure the content posted by Tony Miano stays removed. We have removed it several times and he persists on reposting it as soon as we remove it. We are in the process of filling a TRO and civil suit against Tony Miano due to his relentless, unfounded and unprovoked attacks on Mr. Cahill.

I can see no edits by Tony Miano, and I have no way of knowing who User:Neolights01 is. A revelation of whom you allege Neolights01 to be comes under WP:OUTING. I would warn you that we regard outing very seriously here, and that making legal threats brings one under WP:LEGAL. Peridon (talk) 22:04, 18 October 2012 (UTC)

I've modified your block on this one - they've re-added the spam material by IP, so I've put the last IP block on and blocked account creation. And reasonably politely given them the rounds of the kitchen... Peridon (talk) 21:53, 18 October 2012 (UTC)

OK. I checked the IP and their only edits are to the same article. Blocked the IP for a day on Block evasion grounds. -- Alexf(talk) 22:13, 18 October 2012 (UTC)

Ok. I reviewed the issue. Restored. It was improperly deleted for the wrong reason. The article still has many issues that might make it for removal again. It is written like an essay, it has no sources and it reads like original research which you are admitting to here. -- Alexf(talk) 13:48, 19 October 2012 (UTC)
Could you really not think of a better way to deal with this article than to put another deletion tag on it? No wonder new editors find Wikipedia such an unwelcoming place. And even more unwelcoming is your ridiculous edit notice, which basicly says to editors unfamilar with Wikipedia, "fuck off if you don't understand this bunch of gobbledygook". I thought administrators were supposed to be helpful. Phil Bridger (talk) 22:46, 23 October 2012 (UTC)

As per your suggestion, I have edited the page for the Edgar Award-winning mystery novelist David Housewright, adding nine references to support the claims made in the article that are in no way personally connected to the subject. Hi. Why did you delete my page TVINZ ? You also deleted my username KbhAllStars ??? WHY WHY WHY? my page was about a group named Tvinz and is very important to Wikipedia.

I have seen more than 100 pages on wikipedia with the same info, but those pages arent deleted! So tell me, why did only MY pages deleted from Wikipedia?? What have i done wrong compared to other pages that "isnt relevant" to wikioedia?? Thats NOT COOL!! — Preceding unsigned comment added by SirrP (talkcontribs) 19:07, 21 October 2012 (UTC)

I'm surprised you ask. I can see in the blocked user talk page that there is a notice of speedy deletion for the TVINZ article (which you did not link to as requested, so I see you have not read the request at the top of this edit page either. TVINZ was deleted for lack of assertion of notability. This is clearly explained in the indicated user talk page. Specifically, and in more detail for failure to comply with the notability requirements under WP:BAND. As per the username, it is in clear violation of the username rules. Now, I would understand you did not know the username rules before you created the account. That is common and not a problem. But once it is clearly explained in the blocking message with links to the relevant rules pages, I would think you would go and read them to understand the issue. It seems you did not and now you are asking why. Please go back and read the linked pages which explain the policy very clearly. The message you received also indicated how you could request a change of username should you want to retain the history of that account. You also say you "can see more than 100 pages with the same info", but you do not link to even one to see what are you referring to. In any case this does not matter in a deletion discussion. Lastly, please remember to sign your posts in talk pages with four tildes (~~~~). -- Alexf(talk) 12:02, 22 October 2012 (UTC)

KCS Group page deletion

Dear Alexf

I have just read through your page on why pages can be deleted and have noted that there several possible reasons. The company in question "KCS Group" found on <spamlink removed> covers (I had thought) all the criteria for a page listing. My only concern was the part that covers copyright and if perhaps there was a infringement there that we were unaware of.

I would greatly appreciate you informing me of exactly why the material was removed so as it can be corrected and possibly reconsidered.

Many thanks

Regards James Poole-Robb

Red link: KCS_Group — Preceding unsigned comment added by 81.151.93.228 (talk) 14:48, 23 October 2012 (UTC)

Have you read the article before it was deleted? In case you haven't (you wouldn't be asking if you had as the deletion reasons are pretty clear), I am reproducing it here in its entirety as it consists of only two sentences:
"KCS Group (KCS), a strategic intelligence, risk and security management company. KCS focuses on providing government agencies, multinational businesses and private clients with a range of corporate intelligence and security advice to mitigate their exposure to global threats. KCS was formed in 2004 by Stuart Poole-Robb."
That's it. No sources, no citations, no verifiable independent references, nothing. It reads like a press-release but it does not do anything to assert notability under WP:CORP. Hardly encyclopedic. I also notice that your name is shared with the one mentioned int he article. This seems to indicate a conflict of interest. There are many rules and policies in Wikipedia. This may seem daunting at first but you have to understand that there has to be a list of rules to follow. If you read anything about WP, you should at least understand the Cardinal Rule. Lastly, please remember to sign your posts in talk pages with four tildes (~~~~). -- Alexf(talk) 15:06, 23 October 2012 (UTC)

shido-go

Hi Alex,

Today I was teaching the first of two introductory classes in using Wikipedia to a group of librarians in South Africa, and one of my students followed my instructions by putting up some information about herself on her newly created user page. She asked me a bit later what the meaning was of the warning template that she got. I didn't really have time to address it properly right then, but I told her that this would be an instructive learning experience, and to first contest the deletion and see what happened.

As it turned out, the page was deleted, which is not a terribly bad thing in context, because I'll be able to help her put up a better one tomorrow, and I can use it as an example of how not to get too upset about this kind of thing. However, having now seen what it looks like to a new user, maybe you could consider doing a bit more coaching: In my opinion, a speedy deletion is not the right first move to make when a new user is taking her first few steps in editing. How about just editing out the external link, and putting an explanation on the talk page? I know anti-SEO work can be taxing, and you want to quickly process a lot of pages, but a case like User:Lbopape (again, in my opinion) warrants a softer approach.

Let me know what you think! --Slashme (talk) 19:53, 29 October 2012 (UTC)

I commend you on what you are doing. You may have a point in what you say. Although it is true that Admin work is hard and unrewarding, and we do have a lot of spam to deal with every single hour of every single day, you may have noticed that in this case I did not tag her page for speedy deletion, nor was I the one who deleted it. All I did, was what you ask, i.e. I gave her a reply to her note, telling her that writing about her is allowed, as long as it does not have advertisement or links to external websites, which could be considered promotional, per WP:UPNOT. Explaining that she works at a library is ok. Linking to her employer's website is frowned upon. -- Alexf(talk) 21:18, 29 October 2012 (UTC)

Squirt.org

Hi Alexf,

Can you plese explain why the Squirt.org page was deleted? Previously it the Squirt.org page was redirected to an article about curising in Wales. The only connection between the two that on Squirt.org you can find cruising information about Wales. Not sure why that redirect was happening. What we are intending to do is to create a Wikipedia page, that talks about Squirt.org similarly as you have a page about Manhunt.net or adam4adam or similar sites. This page was the first step of it, as the redirect was not accurate. I am looking forward to your guidance, what is the way to build that page. I am new to Wiki and it will take time to figure out how to build the page.

Best Regards,

Digital Business Director of Pink Triangle Press --Dailyxtra (talk) 17:55, 2 November 2012 (UTC)

The page was deleted twice, one on 7 October 2012 for G11:Unambiguous advertising or promotion. and one today as A3 no content. The second one is obvious. The previous one was a promotional mention of the site, with no assertion of notability whatsoever, no independent verifiable, reliable sources, no citations, nothing. Wikipedia is not a place for promotion but an encyclopedia. Each article by the way, has to live on its own merits (this one did not). Mentioning other similar articles does nothing in a deletion discussion. Lastly, please do not bunch up your messages in Talk pages with whatever was in the previous section. I had to fix that here by adding a section header, else stuff gets lost in the clutter (as stated in section 3 of this edit page). -- Alexf(talk) 18:25, 2 November 2012 (UTC)

ToonBox

Hi Alexf,

I wasn't able to make my link red, but here is the link:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia_talk:Articles_for_creation/ToonBox_Entertainment

It appears that my article was deleted. I am the marketing manager for a company called ToonBox Entertainment in Toronto, Ontario Canada. I wanted to create a Wikipedia page about our company - and I tried my best to not hype the company or treat it like advertisement. To my best ability, I created a simple paragraph with factual information which read:

"ToonBox Entertainment Ltd., is a 3D animation studio located in Toronto Canada. ToonBox’s first original television production, Bolts & Blip was released in 2010 and is considered one of the world’s first 3D stereoscopic series. Nominated for a Gemini Award and Youth Media Alliance Award, Bolts & Blip has aired in over 70 territories on traditional and 3D channels including 3net (US), BSkyB (UK), and Skylife (Korea). Working closely with Korean studio Redrover Co., Ltd., together ToonBox and Redrover can capitalize on a solid working relationship to produce animation, special effects, compositing and 3D stereoscopic renders."

Please let me know what I can do to ensure our company will be published on Wikipedia.

Thank you and signing my message politely,

ToonBox Entertainment (talk) 18:36, 2 November 2012 (UTC) Nahleena Tye ToonBox Entertainment

The article has not been deleted as you say. There is no such article in Wikipedia. What I see is that a request for article creation that you made which as of this writing has not been processed. They do have a backlog and just like we are, they are all volunteers. Looking at the article, I see issues already. You have a serious conflict of interest here. The article is promotional in nature and it reads like a press release: "...together ToonBox and Redrover can capitalize on a solid working relationship to produce animation, special effects...". You refer to it as "your" article. Please understand that there is no ownership of articles in Wikipedia. The article as proposed may fail to assert notability. This has to be done through the use of independent verifiable reliable sources. besides, as informed in your Talk Page, your username is in violation of our username rules. As stated there, you should request a username change that represents only yourself as an individual. Lastly, please do not bunch up your messages in Talk pages with whatever was in the previous section. I had to fix that here by adding a section header, else stuff gets lost in the clutter. -- Alexf(talk) 19:01, 2 November 2012 (UTC)

Lesley McKeever

Hi Alex, I have read your tips and still confused lol. I get why my page was deleted, as it was about my book. I am sorry for posting something that had to be deleted , I didnt know you couldnt creat pages about yourself or your work. Anyhoo, my main reason for the page is I wanted to be able to create a wiki facebook page about myself and my book. Is this possible? As I am new I have no idea what a red tag is? But here is the link to the deleted page if that helps?

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/User:Lesleymckeever

If so could you tell me how? Thanks for your time, hope to here from you. --Lesley McKeever 17:39, 5 November 2012 (UTC) — Preceding unsigned comment added by Lesleymckeever (talkcontribs)

"Create a Wiki facebook page about yourself"? I don't know what that means. If you mean create a Wikipedia page about yourself, this is possible within limits. Wikipedia is not for promotion. Wikipedia is not Facebook or a place for people to write about themselves, for reasons explained at Wikipedia is not about YOU and Wikipedia:Autobiography. It is a project to build an encyclopedia and, in order to maintain a neutral point of view, users are strongly discouraged from editing on any subject on which they have a conflict of interest. If you want to know about writing articles, maybe Your First Article may be of help. Please remember to start a new section in Talk pages with a new header so it does not bunch up with whatever was there before, and please remember sign your posts in talk pages with four tildes (~~~~). -- Alexf(talk) 18:00, 5 November 2012 (UTC)

Speedy deletion for move requests

Alex,

I think I'm going to post at speedy deletion about this, but when deleted a page tagged as "db-move", shouldn't you also do the move at the same time? I would assume that deleting the page means you approve the move, right? If so, you should do it - otherwise the person who wants to move the page might not realize it's ready for hours or even days, leaving a redlink that shouldn't be there that whole time. Ego White Tray (talk) 20:36, 15 November 2012 (UTC)

A link would be good as requested. Because I do lots of edits a day I've no idea which particular one you are talking about. Maybe you are right. I've no idea until I see more details. Sorry but off the top I can't remember which one it is. -- Alexf(talk) 22:04, 15 November 2012 (UTC)
The page that was deleted was Bie and the page moved there was originally Bié. Ego White Tray (talk) 02:30, 16 November 2012 (UTC)
BTW, I did bring this up at Wikipedia talk:Criteria for speedy deletion. Apparently the template has a link to do it, but not being an admin, I don't know if it works. Ego White Tray (talk) 02:32, 16 November 2012 (UTC)

Arbolesdecentroamerica

I think User talk:Arbolesdecentroamerica has made a reasonable unblock request. He's a COI editor, but was simply in the process of performing maintenance edits to articles to which others have added reference links to PDFs of his book, because he and his coauthor are in the process of transferring all those references to a new site. I think this is useful work to prevent 200 or so links from suddenly going dead when the old site is discontinued. Any objection to unblocking? It should also be pointed out to him that a bot could do this work if the URL path remains the same and just the domain changes. ~Amatulić (talk) 17:41, 20 November 2012 (UTC)

Never mind, I just noticed he's created an account under his real name. I'll decline the COI name unblock request. ~Amatulić (talk) 17:44, 20 November 2012 (UTC)

Bot to remove categories?

Hi Alex ... after I did a username block, I noticed you tidied up by removing the hidden comment containing "THE FOLLOWING CATEGORY SHOULD BE REMOVED ..." along with 2 cats. Is there a bot or script that can follow after me and do that, so that neither of us has to do that step? - Dank (push to talk) 03:32, 21 November 2012 (UTC)

Not that I know of. Those must be removed because they keep the user in CAT:UAA. I check daily for blocked, plus also for other cases to be considered and blocked after a certain time has passed with the warning. There are many that are just removed with no action as they are marginal or false-positives. Not a big deal. -- Alexf(talk) 11:02, 21 November 2012 (UTC)
I don't want to be making extra work for you. It's annoying how much effort people put into making this job more difficult than it needs to be. - Dank (push to talk) 13:35, 21 November 2012 (UTC)

I'm going to try to enlist the help of the taggers who add those cats ... who know, or ought to know, at least in the cases where I'm blocking, that if those cats are being added, they're going to need to be removed in short order. - Dank (push to talk) 14:21, 21 November 2012 (UTC)

I see now it may be confusing. I understood she was asking before the change of name (as it is signed on the old name). I read it as: she was already told what the notability requirements are, about noble causes, and where to go to request an article. I was trying to be helpful, but maybe I wasn't. -- Alexf(talk) 13:52, 21 November 2012 (UTC)

Per our earlier discussion, I have just put a {{uw-coi-username}} template on this user for attempting to create an account that is blatantly connected to a company they tried (and failed) to submit an article about via WP:AfC. However, having looked at the instructions on UAA, I don't really feel this is a suitable candidate, as that seems to be reserved for usernames that require immediate attention. Do you have any other suggestions? --Ritchie333 (talk) (cont) 20:15, 22 November 2012 (UTC)

Alex is away for a few days, I'll block with {{uw-softestblock}}, which is a relatively new template that encourages them to create a new account. Thanks for reporting this. - Dank (push to talk) 20:22, 22 November 2012 (UTC)

IPs 190.250.147.213 and 190.250.75.206

Hi Alex, thanks for your quick response to my AIV request. I'm guessing that the reason 190.250.147.213 didn't get blocked is because there was no recent activity from that IP, am I correct? I was also curious why the examples (albeit vulgar) of the inappropriate edit summaries were removed from 190.250.75.206's talk page. I thought that Wikipedia discouraged censoring/bowdlerizing profanity. I'm not criticizing your decision--I'm genuinely curious!  :) Does that policy only apply to articles? I added back a link to the user's edit history because I think that's still valuable for other editors who may want to understand what went on there, but I didn't replace the cursing. Thanks! Cyphoidbomb (talk) 18:52, 29 November 2012 (UTC)

No recent edits from those IPs . I did not have the time to delve into multi-IP complex editing histories as I'm at work, so I just removed the incivility in a user's Talk page. -- Alexf(talk) 19:04, 29 November 2012 (UTC)

Hi Alexf. I've just reviewed an unblock request from a user of this shared university IP, arguing that one week is an excessivly long time for a shared IP on its first offence. I'm inclined to be sympathetic - users of this IP address do generally make constructive edits, and the rate of vandalism is fairly low - and I wondered if you would be willing to consider reducing the block? Cheers, Yunshui  09:29, 30 November 2012 (UTC)

If you look at my log between 13.12 and 13.38 today, you will see that I deleted the promotional Ran Reeves article, the JDC sandbox version, and the JDC user page which in fact had the Rana Reeves text as its content. It seems that the user was using his own page to spam content for, presumably, his real name or his employer's real name. Short block

I see at User talk:98.214.139.168 that you blocked for one day. Is there a German version of the code on your user page which shows

Unfortunately I do not know as I do not speak nor go to the German version. Maybe you should ask there. Many people there can answer you in English if you do not speak German. If it does not exist, it is not too difficult to create one. -- Alexf(talk) 12:09, 5 December 2012 (UTC)

"The agency is one of the top agencies in Atlanta, having had talent they represent appear in over 100 movies." isn't enough? Ok. User:William Reynolds Agency has been blocked per the username policy. The individual user account has not made any blatant policy violations as of yet. A friendly notice in his talk page to teach him about our policies might be what its needed. -- Alexf(talk) 17:18, 6 December 2012 (UTC)

Pity

Pity you dont look at what you delete. my project British seaman's Boys' Home was not advertising it closed in the 80s Nigwen (talk) 18:47, 9 December 2012 (UTC)

Sorry Nigwen. That is not the case, but for starters I could say the same to you, pity you do not read rules of Wikipedia and Talk Page instructions. The top of the edit page requests:
  • If you want to ask me about a page I deleted, please leave a red link to it. (you left no link whatsoever so now I have to hunt for the article among the many I process each day to see what you are talking about).
  • Please create all new messages, at the bottom of the page. Follow procedure and always start a new section for a new message. (you put it way at the top, against all Wikipedia Talk Page rules and created no section. I had to move it and create a section for you).
Now about the article: You had clear instructions in your Talk Page, which I see you noticed as I see you blanked the page. The instructions were: a notice of speedy deletion on 8 December about Copyright Violation. You know by now that we take copyright violations very seriously and the article was deleted by another Admin on 8 December. Then you recreated it and soon after received a Speedy Deletion notice about it being promotional. This notice had clear instructions on what to do about it. You did not do anything as far as I can see, not fixing the issues with the article, not even asking the editor that posted the notice to help you see what you could do about it. The article was speedy deleted as G11. By the time we got to the latest incarnation, it had no references or assertion of notability whatsoever; it was a piece promoting the site, and it had a note from you saying you own the site. Unfortunately that is not enough to be in Wikipedia. It needs to assert notability, it needs to be written in a neutral point of view and it if you own the material, you need to read about donating copyrighted materials. Maybe you might be helped by reading the Golden Rule. That said, if you ask, we can help you determine notability and write an encyclopedic article. As it stands, you need to be a little more civil and ask for help. Have a good day. -- Alexf(talk) 21:21, 9 December 2012 (UTC)

Cultural studies

I saw a redlink to Cultural Studies and assumed it was red because it should've been to cultural studies so made it redirect, only then realising the latter page was deleted for copyright violations. I can't work out how to delete my redirect page, and can't find any discussion of the deletion. (The absence of such an important topic seems a big gap in Wikipedia to me, btw.) Hope I haven't un-intentionally committed a WP bad. BobFromBrockley (talk) 12:19, 12 December 2012 (UTC)

Fixed (deleted as G8). If you have information to write such an article, and as usual with verifiable sources, and of course no copyright violations of any kind, by all means, go for it. -- Alexf(talk) 12:34, 12 December 2012 (UTC)

Hello Alexf, Today I created a page "Rise Radio 1380" which is a commercial radio station that launched on May 1, 2012. Because every radio station I call up on Wikipedia appears with their history, I thought ours would be quite acceptable. Apparently not, as I must have violated some guidelines. Our parent company "CKPC" appears as part of the "Evanov Radio Group" which also appears. Here is a press release and I hope we can dialogue to get us on Wikipedia and I will gladly conform to regulations this time around:

Don't know why you contacted me on this one but, even though you did not supply a red link as requested at the top of this edit page, and did not create a separate section and section header, and did not sign it, all required at the top of the edit page, I went ahead and fixed that and searched for the page you mentioned. I do not see an article. I do see a deleted user page and a user account blocked by another admin. After looking it over I concur with their decision as it closely follows policy. The reasons were duly explained to you (I assume this IP is the same user although there is no confirmation of that). To confirm, the proper way to communicate is to log in with your private user password that only you should know and make a comment/question/request in the user talk page, as clearly indicated in the blocking notice there. In any case, the deletion was done because the article was promotional (reason G11 of the Speedy Deletion Criteria). The account was closed because of a username violation. Even if the article wasn't promotional, it has to be encyclopedic and properly sourced. Your mention that other similar articles exist, is irrelevant to a deletion discussion as every article has to live on its own merits, befitting an encyclopedia. Wikipedia is not a place for promotion. Not every radio station has an article, or merits one. Then we have the conflict of interest issue. If the company is notable, someone will write an article about it in time. If you need any questions answered on that account, please log-in an ask in the user's talk page. Please remember to sign your posts in talk pages with four tildes (~~~~). -- Alexf(talk) 17:38, 12 December 2012 (UTC)

Don't know why ask here as I am not involved in the issue. All I did was remove a category from the page. Had to search for it as you unfortunately did not supply a link to it as requested. Please do so in the future. I see the user account has been blocked (closed) because it is a violation of Groupname, and our username rules. All of this was explained to you in the blocking message including what to do about it so I do not understand why, after reading the rules and policies you are still not clear. As per your intent on writing about your organization, you should be aware of the issues with conflicts of interest. Therefore, without asking for publicly recovering it, in order to learn about the contributor, NOT the article or its topic itself, I would like the latest revision of the article to be sent to me by email (Special:EmailUser/George Ho). Please? --George Ho (talk) 06:40, 15 December 2012 (UTC)

Copy emailed. -- Alexf(talk) 12:11, 15 December 2012 (UTC)

IP Sock

User talk:91.154.103.120 (which you blocked) is a sock puppet using User talk:91.154.104.110 (which you have also blocked) and now he is using 91.154.108.74 to keep on avoiding his block in order to revert unsourced changes and removal of genres on Red Hot Kinda Love (song) and Let There Be Love (Christina Aguilera song). All three need to be blocked indefinitely as this is getting stupid. AARONTALK 16:29, 15 December 2012 (UTC)

We do not block IPs indefinitely. Report them to AIV if they are currently vandalizing. -- Alexf(talk) 21:02, 15 December 2012 (UTC)
He is now using User talk:91.154.103.173. This is the fourth IP address he is using now. AARONTALK 17:25, 18 December 2012 (UTC)
Like I said above. Report them to AIV not here. I am not on most of the time. There are always a few Admins checking AIV, so you get faster action. -- Alexf(talk) 17:42, 18 December 2012 (UTC)

Akusociety unblock request

She (I think) has requested a username change and, atypically, said what she'd edit if unblocked. I have just given her a couple of conditions and then put the request on hold (belatedly, thanks for taking action on SoMdRollerDerby above). Daniel Case (talk) 17:02, 17 December 2012 (UTC)

Read it. I agree. Seems legit. Go ahead. -- Alexf(talk) 19:18, 17 December 2012 (UTC)

Hi. I restored the article Cultural studies (which you had deleted) because I did not see evidence of copyright infringement. I've explained further on the talk page at Talk:Cultural studies#Restored article; feel free to weigh in. ... discospinster talk 02:08, 18 December 2012 (UTC)

OK. No problem. -- Alexf(talk) 02:14, 18 December 2012 (UTC)

Thanks for dealing with BexleyHeritage. The edit wars were getting tedious. Paul W (talk) 23:43, 18 December 2012 (UTC)

??

Sorry about my post. I really wasn't trying to self promote but I was asked to fill in the info and I thought that is what they wanted. I figured I really didn't want someone else writing things about arsenal that really didn't know anything about them. I apologize for the mistake, I just thought by the email that they wanted me to fill it out. Thanks for letting me know. 24.165.169.165 (talk) 02:42, 19 December 2012 (UTC)

Sorry but until you follow the simple instructions at the top of the edit page and point to an article, I have no idea what are you talking about. It may be recent and obvious to you but with hundreds if not thousands of edits a week, I can't remember them all and I have no idea what it is you are referring to. -- Alexf(talk) 02:57, 19 December 2012 (UTC)

Woah.

Hi Alexf,

Remember this? Geez, my first vandalism edit. I cannot thank you enough for blocking me a few months ago. From that time to now, I've done these things:

  • start a couple of articles
  • get adopted (on Wikipedia)
  • make over 2,500 edits
  • accumulate 8 awards
  • get permission to use STiki
  • get Rollback perms.

So thank you Alexf. If it wasn't for you, I would still be one of the vandals which I am now trying to get rid of!

Not spam

Did you actually check the amended external link I made to the The Rainkings page? This just points to the new URL for the page formerly linked. The hosting had changed. I don't understand also how you can class this as spamming when it's clearly a non-commercial fan site with the history, discography, press archives etc of the band. Dr Mango (talk) 15:38, 21 December 2012 (UTC)

Maybe not spam, but a serious conflict of interest when you post links to your own website. -- Alexf(talk) 11:01, 26 December 2012 (UTC)

Regarding Black Cats (band) Deletion

Hello

Page Black_Cats_(band) was deleted because of unambiguous copyright infringement apparently. A page may contain some illegal content but in this case the whole page was deleted and now I can't remove the illegal content. Is it possible to review the deleted page?

This is important because the page is about the most famous Iranian music band that has performed for more than 48 years and many famous singers were joined in this band for a while. I wanted to recreate the page again so the content of deleted page maybe helpful.

Thank You, SiavoshKC — Preceding unsigned comment added by Siavoshkc (talkcontribs) 18:08, 23 December 2012 (UTC)

Userfied at User:Siavoshkc/Black Cats (band). Please note it has no sources, verifiable references, citations or any proof of notability. Also it seems to have copyvio issues. Work on it and take your time, just make sure these issues are fixed before you move it it to mainspace, else it will be deleted again. Please remember to sign your posts in talk pages with four tildes (~~~~). -- Alexf(talk) 11:01, 26 December 2012 (UTC)

Notice to admin who deleted "Gniperdoliga" in 2009

Hello! In 2009, you deleted, fully justifiedl in my view, an article relative to "Christman Gniperdoliga", due to lack of references other than self-publishing. Coincidentally, I came over this tale, by original material, and have now made an ArticlesforCreation for Christman Genipperteinga (not Gniperdoliga). The new sources, relative to the 2009 discussion is the a) original account from 1581, the year Genipperteinga was executed. Furthermore b) this is also found in an 1847 reprint, and is referred to c) on Google Scholar for a 2012 book by Joy Wiltenburg.

My article is currently under review, but I think it is proper that the administrators previously involved in the 2009 deletion process should be informed on this User:Arildnordby/sandbox. -- Arildnordby (talk) 18:09, 25 December 2012 (UTC)

Old article and no red link posted. Good luck on your new article. -- Alexf(talk) 11:05, 26 December 2012 (UTC)
Did not know I was to provide red link to anything I wasn¨t involved in? (I am totally newbie..). Anyhow, here's a link to the deletion discussion back in 2009: Wikipedia:Articles_for_deletion/Christman_Gniperdoliga -- Arildnordby (talk) 15:01, 26 December 2012 (UTC)
Thanks. The request is #1 at the top of this page (when in edit mode). In any case thanks for the deletion discussion link. It helps to see what transpired. -- Alexf(talk) 15:05, 26 December 2012 (UTC)
Ok, sorry about that lack of red-link-referencing. I believe this is the correct red link http://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=Christman_Gniperdoliga&action=edit&redlink=1 Christman_Gniperdoliga. Hopefully, I'll learn to adress the team at Wiki in the way you prefer. -- Arildnordby (talk) 18:13, 26 December 2012 (UTC)
Red link corrected. No need to put all the long URL. It takes a little while to learn the ropes. By the way, you are referring to Wikipedia (an encyclopedia), not Wiki which is a type of software, of which Wikipedia is just one example out of thousands. -- Alexf(talk) 18:15, 26 December 2012 (UTC)

Appreciate your help!

I'll keep in mind the distinction Wiki/Wikipedia

Sabirinfo

Hi Alexf, I suspect that Sabirinfo, whom you have blocked, is the sockpuppet of 37.61.98.239. You may want to refer to the sockpuppetry investigation that I have launched [[3]] for evidence. I welcome you to take part in the investigation. Cheers, Hop n hop (on the arctic ice) 14:56, 28 December 2012 (UTC)

Assistance

Hi Alex, sorry to disturb you. Saw that you were online, and I require your assistance with two requests. First I have told Yerevanci to not to write on my Talk page and discuss our active discussion on List of Armenian American politicians ONLY on article talk page. He continues to post on my page and won't stop. Can you assist?

Second, regarding article List of Armenian American politicians, since August 2012 I have posted porper way to enter entries and valuable info pertaining to article. He reverts my constructive edits in less than a minute if he does not hear from me. Please see article talk page where I explain to him that justices/law enforcement/military officials can not be politicians. They are not elected, serve in non-partisan roles, and must remain politically neutral. They can't introduce legislation like politicians and do not represent constituents. Have explained to him that justices can not be elected, but he refuses to comprehend due to stubbornness. Is there any way you can revise article and lock it if necessary. This is becoming very tedious and annoying.

Thank you for your kind help.--XLR8TION (talk) 05:49, 29 December 2012 (UTC)
