A barnstar for you![edit]

The Tireless Contributor Barnstar
I'd write you this on Commonswiki, but your talk page is protected (for some unexplained reason), rarely do I see people who dedicate so much work into Wikimedia as you. Hope that you will use your precious time now on the English Wikipedia or Wikisource, stay safe. Donald Trung (talk) 16:04, 29 March 2020 (UTC)[reply]
@Donald Trung: thank you. I don't know what's going to happen from here yet. It is indeed strange, my TPA had already been revoked so the protection was not to keep me away. And why would anybody want to stop me from receiving barnstars? That wouldn't make sense, so maybe it was random protection? Indeed, unexplained and very odd. - Alexis Jazz 21:55, 29 March 2020 (UTC)[reply]
@4nn1l2: Indeed, it's a mystery. (I took Rhododendrites up on that food image offer) - Alexis Jazz 07:44, 30 March 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Are you getting unblocked yet? I thought a duration or date of appeal would have been available by now.--BevinKacon (talk) 22:16, 30 April 2020 (UTC)[reply]

I'm sorry.. - Alexis Jazz 15:50, 1 May 2020 (UTC)[reply]
I shall put your Commons talk page on my watchlist so I am kept updated then.--BevinKacon (talk) 21:36, 1 May 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Precious[edit]

Thank you for your idea for the Precious prize, but not for me, please. Great editors who are no longer alive, still live in their contribs, - I'm not ready to differentiate past and present. For some, we'll never know that they died. For some, I'm afraid they did. For me, it doesn't matter if the change from life to death happened before or after I issued the prize. You can do it differently in things you issue. - Btw, "have been" is not past tense, to my limited understanding of English, "were" would be. - Consider to self-revert in the template. --Gerda Arendt (talk) 10:27, 4 May 2020 (UTC)[reply]

@Gerda Arendt: To me it feels odd to talk about an editor as if they're still here. Though I share the thought that contributors/writers in a way live on through their work. But I feel saying "Shakespeare is a great writer" is just as odd. I chose "have been" over "were" because "were" felt too definitive, too.. I don't know. Feel free adjust the wording on the template/documentation. Unless the Precious prize is "your" thing, though in that case I would recommend a big red edit notice on the template. - Alexis Jazz 13:49, 4 May 2020 (UTC)[reply]
Can we do the following. The Precious template is 99% (estimated) my thing, over eight years. I don't speak about the editor, but to him or her. I will use present tense. I agree that you can leave the template as it is, and use it with the "past" parameter, but please don't expect me to do the same. Would that work? - Thank goodness, I "catch" most editors before they die. For the first such editor, I was reluctant but urged to do it by someone who was her friend. --Gerda Arendt (talk) 13:54, 4 May 2020 (UTC)[reply]
@Gerda Arendt: I see. I was unaware that 99% (your estimate) of the usage of the template was by you. Whoever uses the template is free to use it with whatever parameters they prefer. The default is the behavior as it was. I probably won't be using the template myself (at least not in the immediate future) so if you wish, I suppose you could remove the parameter, though perhaps if anyone else joins you in issuing the prize they might prefer using the parameter in some cases. I'll leave that to you. Personally, I still find it a bit confusing to see someone who is no longer with us being addressed in the present tense. Though at the same time, I can see where you're coming from. TLDR: you do you, thanks for your efforts to give good contributors some recognition. - Alexis Jazz 14:13, 4 May 2020 (UTC)[reply]
Thank you. If you want more precise math look at the precious list, and count the ones not by me (Sainsf, for example). --Gerda Arendt (talk) 14:21, 4 May 2020 (UTC)[reply]

@Fma12: just wait for Commons to delete File:Redskins uniforms19.png because copyvio and there will be nothing left. - Alexis Jazz 18:26, 13 May 2020 (UTC)[reply]
@Alexis Jazz: I uploaded File:Redskins uniforms19.png so the Redskins uniform needed to be updated. Beyond of that, the file is not a copyvio at all so the logo displayed is not the main subject of the image. I have uploaded a large amount of NFL and NCAA uniforms that have logos on their helmets with the same criteria. Moreover, two of them were nominated for deletion and kept because of "de minimis". Nothing to be afraid of. Fma12 (talk) 18:46, 13 May 2020 (UTC)[reply]

File:Green-cyan plus cyan alternating.gif[edit]

Thank you for uploading free images/media such as File:Green-cyan plus cyan alternating.gif to Wikipedia! As you may know, there is another Wikimedia Foundation project called Wikimedia Commons, a central media repository for all free media. In the future, please upload media there instead (see m:Help:Unified login). That way, all of the other language Wikipedias can use them too, as well as our many sister projects. This will also allow our visitors to search for, view and use our media in one central location. If you wish to move previous uploads to Commons, see Wikipedia:Moving images to the Commons (you may view your previous uploads). Please note that non-free content, such as images claimed as fair use, cannot be uploaded to the Wikimedia Commons. Help us spread the word about Commons by informing other users, and please continue uploading! 84.250.17.211 (talk) 04:24, 22 July 2020 (UTC)[reply]

..yeah I know alright. It's a long ass story. Userbox[edit]

Thank you for producing a new userbox. I was thinking of doing something similar myself. I wonder if you would consider revising the wording (or adding {{{info|your suggestion}}} to let users do that themselves). I agree that the renaming is unpopular and not in the interests of Wikipedians or other Wikimedians. However, I think it is calculated rather than stupid. When I attempted to donate to Wikipedia, I was diverted to an organisation I didn't quite understand, and I put my debit card away. Had the W?F been called "The Wikipedia Something", I'd have assumed it was a part of the encyclopedia I supported, and paid up. We have created a lot of good will for them to leverage. I oppose all three proposed names, and I should also make a politically correct comment on behalf of the orally impaired. How about This Wikimedian opposes rebranding the WMF as Wikipedia.? Certes (talk) 09:35, 22 July 2020 (UTC)[reply]

@Certes: Thank you, I wasn't entirely happy with the original text. If more users like it, maybe it could be moved to the template namespace. - Alexis Jazz 09:44, 22 July 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Hello Alexis Jazz. Your account has been granted the "filemover" user right, either following a request for it or due to a clear need for the ability to move files. Please take a moment to review Wikipedia:File mover for more information on this user right and under what circumstances it is okay to move files. When you move a file please remember to update any links to the new name as well! If you do not want the file mover right anymore, just let me know, and I'll remove it. Princess Cristina File[edit]

I am the one who made it and I want to clarify what you asked

Davi Salomão (talk) 23:06, 12 August 2020 (UTC)[reply]

What?[edit]

Honestly, why the hell are you pinging me to help procedurally restore copyright violations that I have extensively argued should not be restored? I'm sure you can see how requesting someone enforce a consensus that they disagree with comes across as trollish behavior. Literally all I was saying the entire time was that the copyvios could and should be fixed rather than blindly restored out of reactionaryism, and, having secured the consensus or not, I am not impressed in the slightest to see you concerned with restoring the images without showing any interest in correcting the underlying copyvios. ~Swarm~ {sting} 08:31, 19 September 2020 (UTC)[reply]

@Swarm: on ANI you "wholly endorsed the blanket reversion of these deletions" but seem to have made a bit of a 180 later. I just pinged most people who participated in the discussions. (excluding a few who had never supported undeletion) I hesitated for a moment to include you because of these mixed signals as I wasn't sure where you actually stand now. I didn't expect you to be upset though. Everything appeared to already be done (mostly if not all by Cryptic) before I could really do anything. I'm not here 24/7 you know. — Alexis Jazz (talk or ping me) 16:28, 19 September 2020 (UTC)[reply]
Sorry for the perceived 180 or any other mixed signals. My change in approach was caused by what I perceived to be the lack of interest in actually fixing the copyright problems. The ANI thread died out without anyone showing interest in fixing the problem. Then the deletion review was held and overturned without anyone showing interest in fixing the problem. So, the lack of anyone being interested in fixing the problem overrode the problem itself. ~Swarm~ {sting} 00:49, 5 October 2020 (UTC)[reply]
@Swarm: That's what I was trying to address with my pings. It's hard to expect any one person to commit to fixing all of it, but if everyone joins in it wouldn't be so overwhelming anymore. We could just say "I fix 1-10, you fix 11-20, you fix 21-30" etc. and nobody would have to face a Herculean task. But that's not how it worked out. I don't think people were unwilling to take on the task, just that nobody would volunteer to single-handedly fix all of it. — Alexis Jazz (talk or ping me) 13:39, 5 October 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Adding cleanup translation tags to redirects[edit]

Makes no sense, as redirects do not have to be correct, only plausible. Also, it puts them into the new pages patrol queue, making more work for people who are unlikely to speak the particular language required. (t · c) buidhe 07:05, 7 October 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Agreed, what's going on here? If you think they are uncorrect redirects, RFD is the place to go. Eddie891 Talk Work 12:20, 7 October 2020 (UTC)[reply]
I am with Eddie891 and Buidhe... what were you thinking?Onel5969 TT me 12:23, 7 October 2020 (UTC)[reply]
@Buidhe, Eddie891, and Onel5969: I have tagged a lot of pages, see this VP announcement and User:S Marshall/sandbox. I apologize for any errors. Pages that were moved haven't been tagged AFAIK, but pages that were translated and later changed into a redirect may have been. I'll take that into consideration in the future, thank you for reporting. If you can give me a list or link to a list of affected articles, I'll be happy to assist in correcting any errors. (otherwise I'll try to make a list myself) — Alexis Jazz (talk or ping me) 14:24, 7 October 2020 (UTC)[reply]
I found them on the new pages feed, but I think that onel5969 has undone all of them at this point. Yes, the ones I looked at were all pages that had been merged/redirected to others. Cheers, Eddie891 Talk Work 14:41, 7 October 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Khesari Lal Yadav[edit]

May I ask what was this tag for? The article body doesn't have any Hindi text and doesn't seem to have Hindi→English translated text. And the sources were/are thoroughly checked by me to be authentic. I'm fluent in Hindi. - Fylindfotberserk (talk) 11:00, 7 October 2020 (UTC)[reply]

@Fylindfotberserk: Created by translating the page "खेसारी लाल यादव"[1]Alexis Jazz (talk or ping me) 14:28, 7 October 2020 (UTC)[reply]
Ah.. I now get it. Anyway, the current version is thoroughly checked. Thanks. - Fylindfotberserk (talk) 14:49, 7 October 2020 (UTC)[reply]
@Fylindfotberserk: If you have time, can you also check Fufuao and Kaala Teeka? — Alexis Jazz (talk or ping me) 14:36, 7 October 2020 (UTC)[reply]
Fufuao is unsourced. I'll check whether I can find census data. Atleast something needs to be sourced . Kaala Teeka is huge though. I'll check it after sometime. Watchlisted. - Fylindfotberserk (talk) 14:49, 7 October 2020 (UTC)[reply]
Couldn't find any govt. source bearing this name Fufuao. Can you link me the Hindi source from which the article was translated? - Fylindfotberserk (talk) 16:40, 7 October 2020 (UTC)[reply]
@Fylindfotberserk: Somewhat unexpectedly, someone else (User:Doghouse09) used the type=check parameter I added only recently to {{Cleanup translation}}, so it is categorized in Category:Wikipedia articles to be checked after translation but one of the few that wasn't translated from another Wiki. Doghouse09: you are absolutely correct, the parameter is supposed to be universal, I just hadn't expected anyone to pick it up so soon. — Alexis Jazz (talk or ping me) 17:22, 7 October 2020 (UTC)[reply]
This is the first time I am unable to find out any govt. source. Looks like the transliteration of the name of the village from Hindi to English was wrong. - Fylindfotberserk (talk) 17:30, 7 October 2020 (UTC)[reply]
@Fylindfotberserk: Does azb:فوفوو (هیندوستان) help? — Alexis Jazz (talk or ping me) 17:32, 7 October 2020 (UTC)[reply]
It says "Fufo". Nothing like that either. - Fylindfotberserk (talk) 17:42, 7 October 2020 (UTC)[reply]
@Fylindfotberserk: I think on Google Maps it's called Rampur (रामपुर). — Alexis Jazz (talk or ping me) 17:47, 7 October 2020 (UTC)[reply]

When searching in the 2011 census, I found 48 Rampurs categorized as "villages" in Ghazipur district of Uttar Pradesh - Fylindfotberserk (talk) 17:56, 7 October 2020 (UTC)[reply]

@Fylindfotberserk: 48??? Working at India Post must be hell! ("here's a package to be delivered in Rampur.. BUT WHICH ONE?") — Alexis Jazz (talk or ping me) 18:00, 7 October 2020 (UTC)[reply]
People are not creative enough it seems . I got almost 3000 hits on Rampur, villages, towns, districts, cities combined :) - Fylindfotberserk (talk) 18:03, 7 October 2020 (UTC)[reply]

My translations[edit]

Hi, Alexis, just so you know, I'm a professional translator, and I do all my translating through my own brain, the old-fashioned way. I never use machine translation, and as a point of professional pride, I hope that goes without saying. Thank you. Johanna-Hypatia (talk) 22:27, 8 October 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Thank you Johanna-Hypatia for stating this. Please don't take the tagging personally, I tagged everything from a list (User:S Marshall/sandbox) which are all articles that were translated using the content translation tool. Users like you used that tool as intended, but not everyone did. Feel free to take a look at Category:Wikipedia articles to be checked after translation from Italian and remove the tags from articles that were translated properly if you wish. It seems that Giuseppina Vadalà was the only one from you. — Alexis Jazz (talk or ping me) 22:43, 8 October 2020 (UTC)[reply]
Thank you for introducing me to that template, because now when I find an article that's badly in need of it, I can add it. Johanna-Hypatia (talk) 21:42, 31 October 2020 (UTC)[reply]
@Johanna-Hypatia: Good work! Note that the type=check parameter was only recently added (by me) to {{Cleanup translation}}. It is meant for articles that don't contain obviously broken English but with doubts about the factual accuracy. This is especially difficult to determine when there are no English-language reliable sources. Also note the listed=nolist parameter which I had also added. It does the same thing as listed=yes. As I was tagging hundreds of pages, it was not really desirable to flood the list with all of those. You probably don't want to do this when tagging individual pages. — Alexis Jazz (talk or ping me) 06:41, 1 November 2020 (UTC)[reply]

I've nothing to say about it. As you said, the audio sample is ineligible altogether to the topic/article because it lacks significant coverage within Kiev Day and Night, less textual portion, where any readers only notice the article coverage itself, nor the S.M.I.L.A section importantly, which currently occupies little portion (20%), unless it should be splitted into standalone article. This is an issue. The Supermind (talk) 18:34, 13 December 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Disincentivise spammers[edit]

Hello, excuse me for bothering you but recently I had an idea to disincentivise (weblink) spammers, while currently the technique seems to be to try to fight existing spammers through blanket bans of websites, other (and newer) link spammers will try to get more clicks by inserting their websites because they will only be disincentivised after restrictions are in place. I have an idea to completely disincentivise all linkspamming on Wikipedia, though I can't post it in any public forums as I have used an emoji in my signature in the past which got me community banned from all namespaces except for "(main)" and "User" (with all my appeals to be able to post to WikiProjects or other community pages ignored), so I have to ask you to consider it, though I'm not sure if that constitutes WP:PROXYING of which I would rather not be found guilty. So if you like the idea you'd have to propose it independently, but feel free to mention me as the original proposer.

Anyhow, the idea I had was to implement a system where the ArchiverBot will immediately archive a link. In this scenario the bot would potentially be used to discourage all spammers, for example if we would start to supplement all existing external links with archived links like "External link page name (Archived from the original)", then spammers will be less likely to actually post links. As most users will probably click on the title of a reference first and not" the original" then linkspammers will probably be less likely to use Wikipedia for their advertising.

Plus this would make linked articles more consistent with the sourced content, as Wikipedia has no control over if the linked source will change its content. --Donald Trung (talk) 00:19, 26 December 2020 (UTC)[reply]

@Donald Trung: There's a few problems with that.. Archiving sometimes goes wrong, either because the website does something funny or a network error occurs. Also, when linking genuine sources, they won't get any ad revenue if users only ever read the archived version. My fear is that genuine news websites could start trying to block archive.org if their ad revenue is hurt too much. Archiving straight away is good though, both for the reasons you mentioned and for geographically challenged people. For spam I think something like what Steam does may be more successful, but I'm not aware of this being a sufficiently pressing issue to go that far. — Alexis Jazz (talk or ping me) 05:53, 26 December 2020 (UTC)[reply]
Regarding the spam issue, I personally run into a number of websites which are otherwise trustworthy but blacklisted because someone in the past either used them excessively or had a perceived COI, several Chinese travel websites and news websites fall under this. Of course, if the intent is to spread propaganda then archiving won't help at all, but the spam-blacklist is quite easily applied and quickly used by those with the tools. Another great example would be Banknotes.com which is globally blocked because its owner claimed copyright over scans that are in the public domain simply because the people who control the blacklist are happy to put links on but very reluctant to remove them. Much like a block, it's easy to singlehandedly give one but removing one takes consensus and is nearly impossible. Recently I saw a great number of Chinese websites being removed and hope that alternatives from blanket bans would be created, but rarely (if ever) as such things discussed.
Personally I would weakly oppose such warnings that tell people that they are entering an external (though Wikia already uses them) because many people are aware that they are entering an external site. Perhaps a special whitelist could be created for especially reliable sources or major news websites (basically the only players large enough to actually make a change), though in principle I would probably oppose that too as it's elitist.
My largest problem with many newspapers is that they update their articles, sometimes substantially, and it's impossible to tell what has changed. For example if a shooting would occur in Bumfudge, USA today and the Daily Post (hope it's a generic name and not a real newspaper) would state that "6 (six) people died and 4 (four) were injured" this source would be quoted as such that any developments in the article would actually contradict whatever is on Wikipedia at the time. Of course, the counter argument could be that it's easier to update Wikipedia without having to change the links, but then later the internet archive likely only archived the original access date, so maybe an "archive again" button could be implemented. Thinking about it I haven't thought this through as much as I should. --Donald Trung (talk) 12:23, 26 December 2020 (UTC)[reply]

My "Rename file"[edit]

Hello! Can you see this file? Is the suggested name better this time than last times? Владимир Меланхолин (обс) 07:45, 28 December 2020 (UTC)[reply]

@Владимир Меланхолин: Ah, yes. Your previous requests like [3] contained a bit too much prose for a filename so I adjusted that before moving. Your most recent request is good and has already been handled by Amkgp. Thank you. — Alexis Jazz (talk or ping me) 17:14, 28 December 2020 (UTC)[reply]

I don't know you - still, Happy New Year 2021![edit]

Happy New Year!
Hello Alexis Jazz:

Did you know ... that back in 1885, Wikipedia editors wrote Good Articles with axes, hammers and chisels?

Thank you for your contributions to this encyclopedia using 21st century technology. I hope you don't get any unnecessary blisters.
