PNG[edit]

Managed to order a UBD Street & Community Business Directory (17th ed 1996) and have used it to construct a template and list of Port Moresby suburbs similar to the ones we have for Australian cities. I've done up Konedobu, Papua New Guinea so that it illustrates these. Let me know what you think, and also if you have any means of checking my work as it seems the list of suburbs is rather unofficial and non-defined in PNG unlike in Australia where each suburb name is gazetted in its state or territory. Orderinchaos 19:07, 1 June 2007 (UTC)[reply]

No worries. :) I'll see what I can get going on this front - it's really not much different to the work I'm doing on regional cities in WA, and there seems to be a fair amount of web and official info about some PM suburbs. Will also do a hunt on Factiva for any relevant news articles. Another thing I've got to do is hunt the journals because one had a 3-monthly coverage of state politics for each state from the 1960s until about 1980, and actually included PNG as a section. NASA LandSat Images[edit]

File:Rabaul.png
The Rabaul Caldera.

Hello to anyone watching my user/talk page. I have used the JAVA SDK of NASA World Wind to capture a large number of spectacular public domain true colour satellite images of Papua New Guinea locations. These images are available for use in any article here. If anyone wants me to capture any more images for them, of any location, and upload them to Wikipedia, please make a request here, or talk to me via MSN, at md at brisbanelinux dot com. Additionally, if anyone has a collection of their own similar geographic images/maps/etc, feel free to link them to that page under a new 'images by other users' section. It would be advantageous to create an image library for use in Asia-Pacific geo articles. A big thankyou to others who have been contributing to PNG geo articles recently, particularly User:Nomadtales, User:Wantok and User:Orderinchaos. I would give you all a barnstar, but I really dont like the things :) Aliasd 11:34, 9 June 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Whales[edit]

More than one person has taken issue with my edit, so I'll leave the article alone for now. The reason, however, I deleted the section out-right was due to its obviously opinionated text - this has no place in any encyclopaedia (even one edited by the general public). Personally, as it is obviously not objective I see no reason at all to retain it, the "This article does not cite any references or sources." box clearly stating: "Any material not supported by sources may be challenged and removed at any time". Boilerplate vandalism messages on user talk pages[edit]

Hi, I was addressing a new user's talk page about a vandalism issue personally, but unfortunately my message was confused by your boilerplate vandalism messages which were all muddled up with mine. Please be careful about not littering talk pages with message templates that, even they are only level 1 warnings, might have offended and confused the new editor in the context they were given. Aliasd 20:22, 10 June 2007 (UTC)[reply]

I had already deleted two of his nonsense articles about himself and his band. He had already vandalized the disambugation page with his IP before logging in and continuing with his username. I wasn't worried about offending or confusing him. I was trying to get him to stop without having to block him. IrishGuy talk 20:24, 10 June 2007 (UTC)[reply]
I was aware of his previous edit from his IP as I reverted them myself, I believe the messages I left on his talk page got the message across quite nicely. I realise you are an experienced user, but I think you may have used the wrong approach with this one. Aliasd 20:42, 10 June 2007 (UTC)[reply]
You truly believe that someone who leaves comments like this requires kid gloves? IrishGuy talk 20:56, 10 June 2007 (UTC)[reply]
Heh! see! you offended him! :) Aliasd 20:57, 10 June 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Rings of Jupiter vandalism[edit]

Aliasd - the Rings of Jupiter page was vandalised. I reverted. The vandal was User:Nicolaswar. You have a "final warning" comment on his talk page. I don't know the procedure to ban people, so I was hoping you could sort this out.

Toby Douglass 11:09, 11 June 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Thankyou, this user will be blocked shortly. Aliasd 11:10, 11 June 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Puma "vandalism"[edit]

Re: this edit. That undid an edit of mine after I had undone the vandalism you were targeting. I wanted to check to see if you intended to undo that edit, or if I can re-make it. Thanks. -- JHunterJ 12:15, 11 June 2007 (UTC)[reply]

You did not revert all vandalism by that user. The vandal was on a rampage, so, although I was aware of your edit, I figured you would notice by my edit summary what I was worried about and readd your work. I have readded it for you. Aliasd 13:42, 11 June 2007 (UTC)[reply]
You didn't re-add it, you re-undid it. I've re-added it. Your change that I linked above did not revert any vandalism by the user you were tracking; it only undid my edit. That's why I brought it up here. -- JHunterJ 14:08, 11 June 2007 (UTC)[reply]
Bleh! you are right on both accounts, my most sincere apologies. Aliasd 14:26, 11 June 2007 (UTC)[reply]
No problem -- I also wanted to verify that you weren't opposed to my change. Thanks! -- JHunterJ 14:43, 11 June 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Wantok[edit]

Where do I go to sign him up? Nomadtales 21:43, 13 June 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Have a look at his RfA at Wikipedia:Requests for adminship/Wantok, he could really use some support :( Aliasd 23:31, 13 June 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Are you aware of WP:CANVASS? Posts such as your one at Wikipedia talk:WikiProject Melanesia are discouraged.-gadfium 06:18, 15 June 2007 (UTC)[reply]

  • I was not aware I was doing anything wrong, and will make no further posts of this nature. My apologies. Aliasd 10:08, 15 June 2007 (UTC)[reply]
No problem.-gadfium 22:14, 15 June 2007 (UTC)[reply]

flags[edit]

Hey I just want to say great work on the flags of the provinces and to keep up the good work. Where did you get the flag details btw? Nomadtales 23:15, 17 June 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Heya Nomadtales! I am sourcing most of my information and layouts etc from [1] and [2]. It is rather difficult to get good information as sources often contradict each other! Aliasd 23:25, 17 June 2007 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks btw for the praise! It feels good to have someone notice :) some of this is VERRY time consuming! Aliasd

Hi - a stub template or category which you created has been nominated for deletion or renaming at Wikipedia:Stub types for deletion. The stub type, which was not proposed at Wikipedia:WikiProject Stub sorting/Proposals, does not meet the standard requirements for a stub type, either through being incorrectly named, ambiguously scoped, or through failure to meet standards relating to the current stub hierarchy or likely size, as explained at Wikipedia:Stub. Please feel free to make any comments at WP:SFD regarding this stub type, and in future, please consider proposing new stub types first! Grutness...wha? 02:14, 20 June 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Bleh, calmed down a bit now, but man! would have been nice to get a bit of a dialogue happening with you before you nominated this template for deletion, and when you did notify me, your boilerplate talk message didn't really help to shed light on what your real issue was.

Okay - yes, it is a boilerplate template, that is true, and that is the reason why little specific information was included. Firstly, the two templates (this and {[tlprovstub}} were never proposed as stub types - if they had been, then you'd have got plenty of information from a large number of people. In the case of provstub, it may not even be a stub types, by the looks of it, in which case it at the very least needs renaming to something which doesn't end in stub (SFD covers renaming as well as deletion). In the case of {{Country flagstub}}, it too is misnamed by stub naming guidelines, but more importantly it is a metatemplate of a type which has been rejected frequently in the past at WP:WSS as being too difficult to maintain, causing far more work than it is intended to save. Also, there may be concerns as far as server load is concerned, since if implemented it would be incredibly high use (see Wikipedia:Transclusion costs and benefits for some of the reasons, and consider too that provstub requires double transclusion since it has nested templates). In any case, it assumes that all countries are treated equally as stub types with identically patterned stubs. While this is desirable it is simply not possible. There was, for example, a massive editwar on {{Cyprus-stub}} over the use of the Cyprus flag, which is not recognised by the Turkish north. Similarly, the wording of {{Palestine-stub}} has been amended on several occasions. The stub system as currently employed works remarkably well, considering its apparent limitations; implementation of parameterised and similar stubs types has been found in the past to make the system far less effective overall. Grutness...wha? 03:35, 20 June 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Thankyou for your concise reply. I did not intend this template to be a solve all fix for every country with country data, but I must admit I did design the backend so it might one day be used for more than it was being currently used for. These stub types are designed for the Provinces of Papua New Guinea. I have compiled all the flags in question as well as all but one of the countrydata templates. This template is not complete, as it currently doesnt work for places without flags, but I was going to add that functionality. I can guarantee that there is no issue with the flags being used or countrydata being used in the stub template, as the only territory in dispute actually uses the same flag that the government uses for the resistance movement :). I will support a rename of this template, as it might not be obviously named, but something to this effect is needed for stub sorting the numerous articles related to provincial PNG. Would you support the backend being renamed from Country_flagstub to mabye PNG-provstub2 and the frontend being renamed to PNG-provstub? Aliasd 04:07, 20 June 2007 (UTC)[reply]
Stub has a special meaning here on WP and templates ending in stub are automatically used for one purpose and one purpose only. I've no objection to {{provstub}} being renamed to something like {{PNGprov infobox}} or something (it's more of an infobox than a stub), but PNG-provstub still suggests that it's a stub template, which it isn't. I still don't really see the need for {{Country flagstub}} to even exist though - it certainly seems intended to be a stub template and one which isn't needed and is only used embedded in another template. It will also cause you problems later if you use it as part of provstub, since what happens when the articles it is used on are no longer of stub length? You would need to create a separate template for non-stub province articles. Surely its far easier to simply rewrite provstub slightly to include a link to PNG and its flag, and add the existing {{PapuaNewGuinea-geo-stub}} template separately. Having them decoupled also makes it far easier for stub sorters to add or remove the stub template when necessary. Similar things are done with other countries' infoboxes for exactly that reason - that it is nore useful to decouple the infobox and stub templates than to have them permanently connected. Grutness...wha? 08:12, 20 June 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Marquis de Ray[edit]

Thanks for the links on New Ireland Province to the Marquis de Ray articles. I'd forgotten about that whole saga - an amazing story which is not at all fully told by the current articles... I'll put them on my to-fix list. Wantok (talk) 01:30, 23 June 2007 (UTC)[reply]

No problem! Do you have information on his other three expeditions? Aliasd 01:36, 23 June 2007 (UTC)[reply]

  • Yes, I have a copy of a very interesting book on the whole saga. Didn't mean to malign your work so far at all - just needs more info for completeness, like the other expeditions, as you say. Wantok (talk) 02:51, 23 June 2007 (UTC)[reply]
  • That does sound very interesting, there is only really information on the third expedition online.... I would love to see an article on the other ones, even a stub, I will do templates and such. Aliasd 07:56, 23 June 2007 (UTC)[reply]

DYK[edit]

Updated DYK query On June 26, 2007, Did you know? was updated with a fact from the article North Fly District, Western Province, which you created or substantially expanded. If you know of another interesting fact from a recently created article, then please suggest it on the Did you know? talk page.

Well done on the article Aliasd. I can never remember seeing a PNG dyk before, so it is an underrepresented area and please don't feel guilty about selfnomming at all. Happy editing and thanks for putting PNG on the map, Blnguyen (bananabucket) 03:35, 26 June 2007 (UTC)[reply]

WOOO!!! don't worry, no guilt on the self nom! I have put a lot of work into Papua New Guinea related articles and am ecstatic that a PNG related article made it onto the main page!!! Thankyou so much, you made my day! Now to work on getting Tabubil to FA status :) Aliasd 05:09, 26 June 2007 (UTC)[reply]
  • Congrats, well deserved. Great stuff! Wantok (talk) 05:16, 26 June 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Wow! two in one week! Thankyou very much for selecting these articles for the main page! I have never submitted a DYK before this week, so I view this as quite an achievement. Aliasd 07:08, 28 June 2007 (UTC)[reply]

PNG LLG[edit]

Hiya, I think you might be interested in a little task I have been doing, albeit slowly. I have got a list of local level governments started here which I got from here. The names are from 2003 and no doubt already out of date but at least we can convert this to a wiki table, as I have been doing. If you would like to help be my guest. Nomadtales 01:25, 28 June 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Glad to help. I have been referring to the same list for information for the LLG articles I have compiled so far for Western Province and New Ireland. There are actually some Wikipedia user scripts that allow seamless conversion of preformatted text such as tables to wiki markup, but I would like to see the LLGs arranged by district as well as province. Aliasd 07:05, 28 June 2007 (UTC)[reply]
OK I have moved the list I have been working on over to here List of Districts and LLGs of Papua New Guinea This has a couple of redirects setup from your districts and llg templates. It stills needs fixing for the majority of the provinces, but it is a start. Nomadtales 23:16, 28 June 2007 (UTC)[reply]
WOW! good work! I will fix these up when I have some time, It doesnt matter if it stays like this. for a short while Aliasd 04:03, 29 June 2007 (UTC)[reply]
