Are you sure there is no other firewall software that could be blocking it? You could also try re-installing Norton. This would have the effect of cleaning out the rules list, so it would ask for confirmation for everything again and you could make sure that you set it to allow, just in case it is hiding under a different name. Hey, just a quick tip, (this might not be the right section): Vandalproof runs flawlessly on CrossOver Linux, except with one speedy deletion bug I've found. CrossOver is currently available for free download, and the beta lasts for 60 days. All you need to do is install the Internet Explorer 6.0 and the OLE Component packages, and you're up and running! Hi - I don't know if this issue has been raised earlier, but I have the problem that the rollback tools don't load until all the images are displayed. This creates a real delay even though I have DSL connection. (1) Is there a way to get round this ? First off: I am not a VandalProof user, and I'm not especially familiar with it. I've seen VP users leaving inappropriate warnings on user pages along these lines: 1) User adds an insult to an article. I revert, and leave a warning that doesn't use an official test template. For instance, "If you post any more insults I'm going to block you." 2) User puts the insult back in the same article, and a VP user comes around and leaves a friendly, welcoming Test1 message. This seems kind of silly to me. Maybe it's only a small percentage of cases, but VP users and designers need to be aware that the test templates are not the only way of warning users. Perhaps the software could be modified so that if there are messages on the offending user's talk page that are not recognized as test templates, it shows the user talk page to the VP user and gives them a chance to use their discretion about what message to leave. Vandal Proof has other user warnings that the user can issue. However, my concern with your example is that you warn a user first time with "If you post any more insults I'm going to block you." if it were a mistake or a new user that is not a very friendly welcome, I feel it is very important to assume good faith in the first warning. Also for someone to actually be block it calls for 3 warnings and vandalism after the last warning. Vandal Proof also allows a user to leave a custom warning that they write as well. Just my thoughts on the issue, hope it gives you a better idea of how things work from a Vandal Proof user stand point. I wanted to keep the posted example brief and clear. For the most part I actually do post friendlier warnings before bringing out the big guns. I even use the official test templates when they are relevant. But the same issue applies there too. Note, though, that it is not actually required to leave exactly three warnings before blocking. If a user has posted "Joe Smith is a FAG, his phone number is XXX-YYY-ZZZZ, call him and tell him he's a COCKSUCKER" to ten articles, I don't feel too much pressure to be friendly! Oh ok I see what your saying, in those case I have issued a final warning or a custom warning. However, as you say it would be a good option to see other comments and respond based on that. In such situations, I always skip test1. I too find it silly to give a "thank you for experimenting" when it is clear that the vandal is not experimenting. By default, my edits in VP are being marked as minor & user talk pages default to "watch this page" in autosubmit. I can't seem to find where to change these defaults (if that's possible). I used to be a frequent user of VandalProof until a long wikibreak I took. Since then, a new version has been released and also a patch. I have downloaded the new version and patch, and renamed the file .exe, and all the things I should have done. It no longer gives me the window saying that I have not downloaded the newest version and it registers as v1.2.2, but it freezes up and wont let me on. Ongoing Issue - "Help Us Help You" (Dekimasu)[edit]
For some reason my name has been removed from the list of authorized users. I was added by Betacommand here [1], and he welcommed me here[2]. I had difficulties using it, did everything I could myself, was unable to, so I requested assistance here [3]. Instead of assistance, I was removed from the list. Because I have had difficulties on wikipedia recieving help from administrators when requested, this message is in essence a generic template I am writing on all moderators' talk pages and discussion boards in the hopes of recieving if nothing else a response - ideally, however, a solution. I can select a frequency to update, and I can click Update or Start (depending on which frequency is selected), but no recent changes are ever displayed. Everything else seems to work. I just recently downloaded VandalProof, but I am unable to get anywhere. I open the executable file, which opens a dialog box titled "Connect to VandalProof." It asks for a username and password, and it automatically recognizes my log-in. I click "Login to VP," which seems to work, then the button "Verify Authorization" is able to be clicked, so I do so. At this point nothing happens. I'm not sure if I need to download something else (the help page mentions "dll's", which I don't know anything about), or what is going on. Help?

VandalProof 1.3.1 is about to be released and due to the merge of the 1.2.2 and 1.3 userlist some users have been dropped by accident. If you were removed please add yourself to User:AmiDaniel/VP/Approval and this will be promptly fixed. Just starting out with VP, with the 1.3 version. It loaded my watchlist this morning, but now won't update it. Won't load Recent Changes at all. I got the approval notice on my talk page, but still haven't been added to the Approved Users list. However I think it's working at least partially, as when I was trying to learn my way around I accidentally left an AfD notice on an IP vandal's page instead of the intended warning(!). If it makes any difference, I am on a satellite feed, so have to sign in on the secure pages or it will boot me out. The +/- refers to the number of words (or characters? I will investigate) that has been added or removed. IF it is a significant number, it will be flagged for further investigation automatically. Sometimes, when I tag a page for speedy using VP I end up creating a blank page like this one Brad Cullian&oldid=90058086 (hopefully speedied itself soon) with the only content being the tag. I thought it might be an accidental recreation -- someone deleted the page just as I tagged it. But as of this moment in time, the page I meant to tag Brad Cullian still exists. (Will probably go redlink soon). Something similar has happened when I tried to speedy a redirect I created by userfying a page from article space. I feel like I'm creating extra work for admins by making these mistakes, -- I'm essentially creating pages that only exist to be speedied. But I'm not sure what I'm doing wrong. I run "VandalProof 131.exe", Language says "en", Root says "wikipedia" (like this, no caps). After two or three seconds my username "Jan.Smolik" apears in the Username. I click "Vefify Authorization". It says: "You are not on the user list." That is all.

I'm using VP version 1.31. It's not letting me log in. When the program starts I'm not automatically logged-in but I know this is OK because I'm not using IE (Netscape running Firefox engine). But even if I press Chg and enter my username and password then press Log-in to WP, I get nothing. I wait one minute and still nothing. The Verify Authorization remains disabled. There is a bug affecting some users, and the cause has not been determined. When AmiDaniel returns from his break, he will have to try to figure it out, because I can not. However, if you are affected by this bug, it may help to write down your internet settings (for IE), what browser you use to edit normally, addons, ect, perhaps in my sandbox. There should be a file called CustomButtons.txt in the same directory as VandalProof. This file lists each button, the text displayed ont the button in VandalProof and the template to insert when the button is clicked. You can change the template to point to something else to insert different text (for example I have some warning templates which insert a heading then the standard template text). The only thing to watch out for is the VandalProof adds its own template at the end of the insert text which links to the revert that has been made. If I get one of those annoying runtime errors while I'm going to rollback an edit, and I have to go back to the articles history after I re-open, when I view the diff of when when the vandalism occured I get an "Error retrieving warnings" message in the spot where it usually states the user's username and the warnings they recieved. Can't login / I was approved, but I'm not on the User List[edit]
I tried using VP 1.30, when it was still in beta. It kept crashing, so I figured I'd wait for VP 1.31. I just downloaded VP 1.31, and it tells me I'm not on the user list. I checked and I don't show up on the user list, despite having been approved by betacommand. (see diff, history) I've been using the monobook.js admin-like anti-vandal tools by Voice of All, but I'd really like to give VP a whirl. What should I do? Many thanks in advance. I recently used the "Rollback (Custom)" option to revert the removal of a message from User talk:68.126.7.176. VP reverted fine, but placed my custom message in the middle of AntiVandalBot's and also deleted some of its message. UPDATE: I also get problems whenever I click anything. It always says, no matter what the page, that there has been a script eror on line seven, character one. I click 'yes' to let it continue running, but the RC list never pops up unless I disable the RSS feed, and the blacklist/whitelist won't update when using the 'import/export' function.

I've tried integrating WP:UTM into my VP and have had difficulty. The "a link to the edit I've reverted" text keeps being added to the end of my new reverts and my signature is added twice. It's not a terribly huge problem, just a nuisance...makes the warning look terribly long. This is clearly a VP issue and not an issue with the new warnings -- or, probably more likely, an issue with my understanding of how to implement custom Rollback buttons. Actually, it would appear the only issue is that the new template automatically incorporates my signature, whereas the old one does not. VP automatically adds the "a link to my revert" language and sig at the end of posted warning templates, so the new template's inclusion of the sig poses an issue with VP. What do the words under the 'Filter' heading in the recent changes tab mean? It's just that I'm not sure what 'hi', 'oll', 'ass', etc. have to do with the changes on the pages.

They are words added to the article in the edit that much a set of common words used in vandalism--see your badwords.txt file for the full list. I'm sorry that you feel this way, and I do apologize for my lack of availability over the last few month--unfortunately, life has been quite hectic lately, and I've not had time for anything Wiki related. It's not just VandalProof that I've been neglecting, but rather basically all of my on-wiki projects (for example, WikiMonitor, my "other fish to fry", I'd originally planned having finished in November 06...). While the bugs you mention are an inconvenience, the first two you mention are quite easily repaired by the suggestions Betacommand mentions. As for the last bug, this typically results from the absence of needed files such as the default RcPrefs.txt and badwordlist.txt--please ensure that you have these files named correctly and in the correct folder. It is indeed my intention to more or less abandon the VandalProof project, as I've stated before--the software was originally developed as just a simple little rollback gizmo and, due to fundamental flaws in the original design, as more and more bloat got added to the software it became more and more broken. If anyone has the patience to read through my horribly, horribly messy and unanotated source to attempt to derive fixes for these bugs, please let me know, and I'll be more than willing to bundle it up and send it off to you. I, however, do not plan on submitting any more fixes, but rather I intend upon voting all of my extremely limited Wiki time to projects such as WikiMonitor and VP2. Thanks to both of you for your helpful replies, and no need to apologize for anything. In a bit more detail the problems are: (1) The script errors are the least of the worries, but my experience is that turning off javascript in IE breaks a lot of non-wiki web pages. I can live with this one. (2) The run time error that gives me grief is (copying text from above) "Run time error '91' - Object variable or With block variable not set". I once recorded the latest viewed RC number for each crash, and got 5, 67, 108, 102, 1, 17, 2, 2, 36, 2, 12, 31, 17, 105, 1, 77, 38, 12, 1, 3, (about) 400, 1, 22. That is to say, it is unusual for VP to load a hundred recent changes without crashing. (3) By no rollback I mean that diffs cannot be rolled back – the buttons are greyed out. This makes (eg) watchlist patrolling harder, as instead of single click rollback & warn (brilliant!) you have to find the last good version, rollback with popups, go into the history, copy the pagename … well, you get the drift. This bug arrived at the same time as Werdna added the number of chars added/subtracted to the RC list. (4) I was unclear what I meant with regard to user warnings. It wasn’t using VP to place the new-style warnings that bothered me (I have already customised my CustomButtons), but VP’s interpretation and pre-reporting of existing user warnings.

If the article has already been subsequently edited since the time of the RSS feed you clicked on, then the button does not become active. So just to make sure you're doing all the steps, here is what you do:
double-click on the program icon
login to Vp by entering your username and password, or wait for it to find your IE cookie, then press login.
click on the recent changes tab in the left pane header.
click <update>
scroll through the list and find a likely candidate for reversion
click on the title of the article in question in the RSS list.
on the right pane, your browser window should show a summary of the diff; if after careful review you determine the edit should be reverted, press the appropriate rollback button.
note that if the buttons are grayed-out, there is probably a phrase below the edit summary that says something to the effect of:
Since user badboy edited the page, it has been edited or reverted by goodguy. Rollback has been disabled as a protective measure.
If after seeing the diff, you open the article or the user talk or contribs, the rollback buttons will not be active. Just go back to the left pane, and click on the RSS entry again.

I want to throw out an idea and see if it gets the same resistance now that it did a year ago. Aside from the runtime 91, the warning retrieval error (both fixed in the next release, thanks to Alex), and the script errors (for which there may likely never be a fix unless Microsoft gets their shit together), the only real problem still present are the difficulties users are having "logging in". With VP's current security measures, our quite understaffed moderator body has had to take on a tremendous workload, leaving many users out to dry for weeks while their requests to use the tool are processed. Even then, once approved, users quite frequently have difficulties getting into the program due to bugs in the verification system; as such, many users are rendered completely unable to use the tool. With m:WikiMonitor, which I'm planning to put into beta-circulation in the next month, I plan on having absolutely no security mechanisms although the tool is debatably far more powerful and capable of damage than VP. My reasoning behind this is that I want WikiMonitor to be a fully open-source app (although likely not GPLed due to the MS EULA on some of its components), and that, as such, the security measures will be quite easily bypassed by any one with half a brain cell--putting them in serves only to encourage vandals and the like to bypass the measures, although they may not have had any interest in using the tool to these ends were the measures not in place. I also feel that this limited access seems to be in conflict with the free and open spirit of Wikimedia, and, as it will be an entirely interwiki-project, attempting to keep up with the approval process will be next to impossible. I expect to receive resistance to not securing WikiMonitor; however, this is what I currently intend to do. What I would like to propose presently is either removing or minimizing the security measures in place in VP. My preference would be to remove them altogether; however, I'm also open to implementing a system similar to that used by WP:WDM, which, at startup, checks the user's edit count and blocklog to determine whether s/he can use it, as opposed to checking and having to maintain an "approved user list". I will not, however, take either of these steps unless the users of VP and the Wikipedia community at large are in support of it. I've changed the login system to no longer use encryption, which will hopefully reduce errors and/or make the issues easier to debug in future. A solution to the approval backlog would be to find a few users who have had VP for a while, and see if they're interested in moderating. 1.34 Won't load Recent Changes, Scripts error is back[edit]
For the past couple days I've been getting the scripts error over and over in v.1.31, so I just downloaded 1.34 to see if it's fixed. The icon on my desktop says it's v.134, but the page when I open it still says 1.33. The Scripts Error window pops up as soon as the browser opens, before anything loads. I tell it to stop running scripts and it manages to load the intro page, but it won't load Recent Changes. V.1.31 used to not load RC sometimes, but for some reason it started working more smoothly over time -- I honestly don't know why -- so I don't know why this is happening. This is completely off the topic of VandalProof; however, I was wondering if some of you out there who are more artsy than myself would care to assist me in creating a logo for the up-and-coming WikiMonitor app. I already have a working splash screen (shown right), though I'm totally open to suggestions of improving it as well. What I'd really appreciate would be if someone could help come up with a nifty icon for the app (an icon to be displayed, i.e., as the exe icon). As of yet my only idea for an icon has been the typical eyeglass meme, which I think is quite lame. I'm hoping someone out there may have some better ideas :). The only restrictions are that it has to be freely licensed (GFDL, CC, PD, etc.) and must adequately convey the concept of the app. Ideal would be something that could also convey it as a tool that is both international and free (in the GNU sense of the word). Note also that the foundation logos (the Wikipedia globe, etc.) are trademarked, and though I'm putting in a request to the board to use these logos in other parts of the application, I do not yet have this permission, nor do I really want anything foundation-specific to be included in the icon. I was authorized for Vandal Proof last summer and reapproved just today, however everytime I log in to version 1.35, and I click "Verify Authorization", the VP window pops up and then...nothing. About your message on the start page: I actually use the filter quite a lot. The fix is extremely simple. All I did is went to badwords.txt and added a space before and after six or seven words. I've been wanting to become a user of VandalProof for quite some time. I spent alot of time fighting vandals the hard way and thought getting access to this tool would help me. However, I haven't been able to use it for weeks. I was able to finally add a Welcome message to a user's talk page today, but I have to deal with hundreds of Script errors before I'm able to do anything. I don't even have the patience to try and learn the program because I deal with about 50 popups in 20 minutes so I shut it off and do something else. I also have greyed out rollback buttons. I know what you're thinking, check the FAQ, I did.
At first I thought it was an issue with Firefox because I absolutely hate IE with a passion. But I used it anyway so I could fight vandals. I get the same script errors though and I'm unable to rollback anything due to the buttons being greyed out. I've cleared the cache of IE and the temporary Internet files and I've also cleared out my monobook.js file and added {{subst:navpop}} towards the end of the file.
I hope I'm the only one that is having these issues, I'd hate to know that everyone is as frustrated as I am. What am I doing wrong? BrianZ(talk) 01:09, 9 March 2007 (UTC)[reply]
I downloaded version 1.35 and I'm now able to use the rollback buttons. I'm still left with the annoying script error popups though and popups are the main reason why I hate IE so much, so if anyone has any other ideas other than what is in the FAQ about deleting Temp Internet files I'd appreciate it. I used to constantly get the script error until just recently, when I installed a quick fix to my monobook.js. Seeing as you have a large amount of JavaScript, I'm pretty sure what the problem is. You have a large number of scripts that work in Firefox, but are incompatible with IE. To fix this, place the following in your monobook.js:
var detect = navigator.userAgent.toLowerCase();
var IE;
var place = detect.indexOf('msie') + 1;
if (place) IE=true;
if (!IE) {
/* Place your Firefox scripts here */
}
Then, move in all scripts incompatible with Internet Explorer into this area in place of the comment. Any scripts you put in there will be disabled when you run IE. It works; see my monobook.js, which uses this. PyrospiritFlamesFire 04:54, 10 March 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Hi - I was approved by Betacommand, but when logging in, it says I'm not on the user list. I was on previously with another username (Philippebeaudette) but went through usurpation to this one. Sometime over the weekend I I lost the ability to populate/update 'My Watchlist'. If I load some recent changes, a small subset of the RCs appears in the list, all in the form

I have submitted my name twice for approval recently, only for my name to be removed twice (1 and 2) with no explanation in the edit summary or notification on my talk page. I was previously approved as Mattbr30 but have since been renamed (I even noted this in my first request), and with nearly 9000 edits, I believe that I meet the approval criteria and I am a bit confused as to why I have not been approved. This diff also shows that users are being approved who are not on the awaiting approval list, with everyone on the list being removed at the same time. When I try to verify authorization for VandalProof, it says "User list is corrupt, please contact a moderator to have it repaired" even though I was approved with the latest version of it. Watchlist and Recent Changes failing to populate correctly.[edit]
With the RSS Feed turned on, neither the watchlist nor the recent changes list will update at all, and with it turned off, the recent changes list will update (without all the features provided by the RSS, of course) and the watchlist updates with some odd part of the recent changes list, all by user "admin," which seems very glitchy to me. I'm using WinXP, VP 1.35, and Firefox 1.5.0.11.
Also, i noticed that in the about box it says "For the English langauge Wikipedia", where it should be "language".
The watchlist bug is related to a recent change to the query.php interface; we're currently in the process of devising a work around. If you could, however, report bugs to the BugTracker, which we're going to begin using to manage bugs and feature requests and coordinate developing solutions for them, it would be much appreciated.
