Why

Are you deleting the facts I added to the Israel page? Why are you adding misinformation as well? There are several nations in the region with higher press freedom than Israel, like Cyprus. How can you rationalize vague comparisons of literecy rates to the fact Israel has a literacy rate of 96.9% ? Public awareness (talk) 07:43, 13 September 2011 (UTC)

You undid most of my work, I wrote about literacy by adding solid numbers, and you undid it, why? If you really wanted to keep the comparisons to inappropriate groups thats different, but deleting most of my writing, why?
what does it matter how the RWB categorizes? If they split north and south america would Panama not be in the region of Columbia anymore, of course not, Cyprus is a short boat ride from Israel, it's the same region. Public awareness (talk) 08:00, 13 September 2011 (UTC)
About RWB: If we are talking about countries according to a certain report, it makes sense to group them according to the same report.
About the other things: I checked it again, and apparently it was a strange edit conflict. The software should have prevented it, but i was allowed to save it. I reverted the other edits i made - sorry about that. --Amir E. Aharoni (talk) 08:09, 13 September 2011 (UTC)
Oh, I see, I didn't know you could accidently undo others works like that, but I do see how it could happen with multiple people editing at the same time.
For the region part, it now says "in the region" which means in the area, relative proximity, if you wanted to go by RWB's regions than I think you should change it to get this across by writing "in the Middle East" or "in the Middle East and North Africa". Vandalism

This user Bbb23 is vandalizing the wickipidia page of Adriana Ferreyr. He has taken off a number of reliable references one by one and then put the page up for deletion for a lack of referenceces. He has also deleted the talk page that an administrator have created for discussion of the page. Red Link Recovery

Hello. As a Russian-speaking WikiGnome, I'd like to solicit your help in testing a new tool. For a few years now, the Red Link Recovery Project has been using the Red Link Recovery Live tool to track down and fix unnecessarily red links in articles. Recently, the tool has been expanded to work on non-English Wikipedias. A small set of suggested fixes for red-links on the Russian-language Wikipedia have been prepared and I'm hoping to interest some Russian-language speakers (such as yourself) to work through them.

In that case, yes. :) Compare "nehag" (driver), not "nahag", as you can hear often in busses. Actually, it is only logical that the "shva", which is a silent sound, should sound like an "a". Nehag is actually segol, like in pekham (נֶהָג‎, פֶּחָם).

We get lots of good-faith copyright violations: that doesn't meant that they may remain on Wikipedia in violation of their restrictions and ours. I agree that the subject is notable, and that there should be an article, but it's not too much to ask that it be written and sourced in compliance with WP requirements. MSU Interview

Dear Amire80,


My name is Jonathan Obar user:Jaobar, I'm a professor in the College of Communication Arts and Sciences at Michigan State University and a Teaching Fellow with the Wikimedia Foundation's Education Program. This semester I've been running a little experiment at MSU, a class where we teach students about becoming Wikipedia administrators. Not a lot is known about your community, and our students (who are fascinated by wiki-culture by the way!) want to learn how you do what you do, and why you do it. A while back I proposed this idea (the class) to the community HERE, were it was met mainly with positive feedback. Anyhow, I'd like my students to speak with a few administrators to get a sense of admin experiences, training, motivations, likes, dislikes, etc. We were wondering if you'd be interested in speaking with one of our students.


So a few things about the interviews:

  • Interviews will last between 15 and 30 minutes.
  • Interviews can be conducted over skype (preferred), IRC or email. (You choose the form of communication based upon your comfort level, time, etc.)
  • All interviews will be completely anonymous, meaning that you (real name and/or pseudonym) will never be identified in any of our materials, unless you give the interviewer permission to do so.
  • All interviews will be completely voluntary. You are under no obligation to say yes to an interview, and can say no and stop or leave the interview at any time.
  • The entire interview process is being overseen by MSU's institutional review board (ethics review). This means that all questions have been approved by the university and all students have been trained how to conduct interviews ethically and properly.


Bottom line is that we really need your help, and would really appreciate the opportunity to speak with you. the Masry Arabic?

The language committee's policy is to recognize as eligible languages that are listed in the ISO 639 standard as living languages. В столичной (уфимской) газете на башкирском языке вышла статья-интервью, где Ваше имя воспроизвили на башкирском. Сегодня я начал писать новую статью для другой газеты и тоже хочу упоминать Вас. И задумался. Правильно ли мы воспроизводим Ваше имя полностью? Хочу у Вас спросить совета. Как лучше писать? На английском Вы пишете Amir Aharoni и Amir E. Aharoni, на русском Амир Элиша Аарони. Из нашего рассказа башкирская газета "Киске Өфө" воспроизвела как Әмир Элиша Аһарани. На мой взгляд, на башкирском языке должно быть Әмир Әлишә Аһарони или Әһәрони. По поводу Әмир так должно быть, такое имя у нас встречается. Но вот более древние имена Әлишә и Әһәр не встречал. Моего деда на седьмом колене (конец XVIII - начало XIX века) звали Әликәй. Your name should be, ਅਮੀਰ ਅਲੀਸ਼ਾ ਅਹਾਰੋਨੀ, according to the pronunciation: "ameer aleesha ahaaroni" where "ee" for the sound like letter E, "a" for the sound like in the According, "aa" for the sound like in Aardwolf or long A as ⟨á⟩ in latin , o like the letter O itself, and "ni" for nee (ee = E). Please please please help. I've done and qualified for the rally since 15 or 16 August but I can't sign on the page as it's too long for me as I'm on mobile. I didn't signed before as I thought that it is to be after the rally is over. But now I can't sign for being qualified. I want to sign with, Please transfer my cut to me. Typing in Kashmiri

Hello Amir Elisha Aharoni, I have seen that you help language support on wikimedia projects and I was wondering if you could create a way to type Kashmiri because the Kashmiri language can't rely on the current Devanagari typing software that is used in the Hindi, Marathi, Nepali wikipedias use because Kashmiri has special distinct sounds that these languages don't have, for these sounds there are new letters that have been introduced into the Devanagari script, and I can't find a way to type them. The same goes with the Persio-Arabic script, the special sounds have special letters as well and I can't find a way to type them. Instead of deleting half the articles on ks.wikipedia.org because they are made up of one word and a file, I want to develop the articles so could you please help concerning this matter or please direct me to somebody who can? Дело в том, что у нас также есть проект "Викиребёнок". И есть довольно долгое время. После того, как некоторые участники провели операции по переименованию (подробнее тут), почти все страницы проекта "Викиребёнок" были спрятаны. Смотрите. В категории ссылки не красные, а поиск показывает, что эти страницы не только есть, но ещё и полные (с картинками и пр.). Однако, пройдя по ссылке, ничего не видно. Я не знаю к кому ещё обратиться. The second link doesn't work, but I suppose that you referred to this. I am reluctant to use it, because that publication is very openly opinionated, and it doesn't add a lot of information anyway. The people behind Memri are opinionated, too, but they mostly translate and quote other sources, so it shouldn't be problem.

OmegaWiki

Hi; I'm a new user at OmegaWiki (as well as a somewhat experienced Wikipedian), which you seem to have left a year ago, so I'll ask you the question here. Feel free to reply either here or there.

A while ago, you had a conversation with Kip about how to use niqqud. Going through it, I couldn't seem to figure out what the conclusion was; i.e. what exactly should I do when adding a new word in Hebrew. Mmmm... Nice of you to remind me that thing :)
I didn't leave in the sense of "I don't want to do this any more", because I do love the idea of that project. I did, in practice, leave in the sense "I, very unfortunately, don't have time to do this any more". I really hope that the software will improve and I'll be able to do this more efficiently so time will be less of a constraint.
Generally, three things are needed for this to work well.
Number zero is understanding of the problem: Hebrew is quite unique in having two spelling systems - with and without niqqud. Both are useful for different purposed in daily life and both are required in dictionaries. (Actually, I'm saying "unique", but it's not entirely correct: There can be a comparable, though not identical situations in other languages, for example Russian with marked stress or English with IPA.)
Number one is technical support in the software. It must be possible to specify a relation between the form with niqqud and the form without, and not just as an "alternate spelling".
And number two is a decided written standard among people who edit the entries in Hebrew on questions such as what should be the main form.
I don't have the capacity to fix number one, but I'll gladly consult anybody who is willing to do it. And I am willing to explain more about numbers zero and two, because it's important to understand them. --Amir E. Aharoni (talk) 04:30, 28 February 2013 (UTC)
Admittedly, software improvements are definitely needed (including, as you mentioned, the ability to search by either form). In the meantime, however, I was thinking about requesting another language, called he-n (or whatever) as a temporary measure, until the technical support is developed.
Regarding your point number two, I don't think it's crazy to simply follow the "official" rules for spelling. For example, in English, many people incorrectly use i for I, but OmegaWiki only includes the correct form. The situation with Hebrew is not exactly the same (להיפך isn't wrong per se), but it's close enough that I think we only need to use the official spellings. About number two - the forms must definitely be written according to the Academy's standard (להפך), and common non-standard forms (להיפך) should be listed as aliases. By "main form" I'm referring to the question of whether it should be the form with or without vowels. It's not very important - both must be listed eventually, and the question is just which one appears as the main one. I prefer the one with niqqud, as it is in Even-Shoshan; many people may prefer the one without niqqud, as in Rav-Millim. A decision is needed mostly for consistency.
I like the idea of having a language tag for Hebrew with niqqud, such as "he-vocalized". It's useful for many things beyond OmegaWiki. It should be standardized as an IETF language tag. --Amir E. Aharoni (talk) 17:48, 3 March 2013 (UTC)

Hi, Amir. Being that you are an admin in both en. and he. Wikipedia, I thought you might have a good suggestion on the following:

I've been noticing interwiki links being deleted in favor of wikidata links. All fine. But I happened to look at the wikidata links page for Shabbat (d:Q102477) and noticed nothing in Ladino Wikipedia. Seemed odd. So I went to check it out. There is an article at lad:Shabat. It's short, and has a couple of sentences about "Shabat is the seventh day of the week" and a couple of sentences about "Shabat is Shabbat." (OK, I don't really speak Ladino, but I understood that.) All the automatic wikilinks on that page lead to "Saturday" rather than "Shabbat".

So my question to you is very simple: What do you think? In Ladino (davka) should we override that link to connect to Shabbat, or should we leave it as "Saturday"?

I don't really see a problem here: I can read Spanish, and I can understand the Ladino article. Much of it is about Shabbat as a day of week, and it has interlanguage links accordingly. Interwiki request for help

Hi, Amir. I'd like your feedback on a couple of things.

  1. I created a new {{User SUL Box}} for he Wikipedia. You can find it currently in my he sandbox. I'm curious if you like it and think it is worthwhile to put into the he Template space. I know there is already a he:תבנית:משתמש בעל חשבון מאוחד, but it doesn't have the usual links in it, so I played a little bit.
    It seems, BTW, that it is almost impossible to name this template with Hebrew letters—mainly because it is practically impossible to write out coherent directions without the ltr/rtl issues making a mess of things. The template works that way, but the instructions look garbled. That is why I propose the conventional name "User SUL Box".
  2. Separately, is there any reason you can think of why my page in yi comes up as משתמש instead of באַניצער? (Not that my Yiddish is so good ...)

  1. My impression is that the Hebrew Wikipedia is, in general, more liberal than the English one with regards to userboxes. It looks good to me personally and you can probably move it to the template namespace. Somebody may ask you about the duplication. Consider merging it with the existing template or making the parameters optional.
  2. It's a bug. Thanks for reporting it. Basically, "באַניצער" was defined as the generic namespace name for "User:", but users who have defined the gender (מין) in the preferences saw the Hebrew namespace names instead of Yiddish names, because Yiddish names for different genders weren't defined. I fixed it. The fix will be deployed on the Yiddish Wikipedia in a couple of weeks.

Speaking of bugs (maybe)

Once I got the Hebrew template finished, I started working on a Yiddish version, not that I speak Yiddish. I'm working on it in the same he sandbox, because it's a right-to-left sandbox. So ... I noticed the following as I was pulling in the Yiddish names of the various projects:

– Wikibooks Wikisource
Hebrew Wikisefer Wikitext
Yiddish Wikitext (project doesn't exist) Wikibibliotek
