April 2013[edit]

Thank you for your contributions to Wikipedia. I noticed your recent edit to Om Swami does not have an edit summary. Please provide one before saving your changes to an article, as the summaries are quite helpful to people browsing an article's history. Thanks! ukexpat (talk) 15:46, 26 April 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Thank you for the e-mail. I prefer to keep discussions "on-wiki" unless there is a good reason not to. I added the other tags as explained in my response at the Help Desk - it's always a good idea to keep discussions in one place.--ukexpat (talk) 19:06, 26 April 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Adoption[edit]

Hi Anjumodgil. I would be happy to adopt you and help you become familiar with Wikipedia. Can you give me some ideas of your of how you would like to contribute, or areas of interest? Also, are there any areas where you need help right now? - MrX 14:31, 18 May 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Thank you so much. I need help on my Article http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Om_Swami which has been proposed for deletion. After the feedback from the editors, I have edited the Article on the tone. Can you please review it and let me know if it is okay or still needs modification. Secondly, for notability, we have added few other links and I am waiting for some more info. On notability, would TV interview be considered? I would really appreciate if you can help me guide in saving this Article. Regards, Anjumodgil (talk) 15:35, 18 May 2013 (UTC)[reply]

I don't think the issue is so much about how that article is written, as much as it is about the lack of notability of the subject. I've searched all of the news, journal and encyclopedia archives that I have access to and could find nothing that would support that Om Swami is notable. Unfortunately, we can not use self published sources such as his own web sites, nor can we use links to his books on Amazon.com. A TV interview could be a reliable source. Please see WP:RS for a little more guidance. - MrX 23:26, 19 May 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks for your feedback. I do have a magazine which has an article published on him. I don't have it online though. It is a printed form. Can you please advise me how I can put that as a source? And would that be acceptable? Regards, Anjumodgil (talk) 02:52, 20 May 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Sure. Sources do not need to be available online, so your printed magazine article would be fine. Please see WP:CITE for how to format a citation. If you go to your user preferences, click on the Gadgets tab, then check the box in front of "ProveIt, a powerful GUI tool for viewing, editing, adding, and inserting references (screenshot, working demo)", and then save. This will give you a tool on the lower right of the edit window. The tool allows you to position your cursor in the edit window where you want to insert the footnote citation, and then fill in fields such as the article title, journal name, publication date, author, etc. It makes adding sources easier and formats them correctly. After you add one or more good sources, you will want to make sure that you go to the articles for deletion page to post an argument for keeping the article. You may want to read WP:GD first. - MrX 03:10, 20 May 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks again for your response. Would you be able to review what I have before I put them on the Article? How can I share them with you? Regards, Anjumodgil (talk) 00:49, 21 May 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Sure. You can place it here or in your sandbox. - MrX 02:09, 21 May 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Sorry, these are seven pages in jpeg and three in pdf format. I don't know how to upload them in sandbox. Regards, Anjumodgil (talk) 03:05, 21 May 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Hello MrX. I tried inserting the citations on my sandbox but it is giving an error message. Regards, Anjumodgil (talk) 17:47, 21 May 2013 (UTC)[reply]

I fixed the references in your sandbox by adding {{Reflist}} below the last reference, which generates the footnotes. The URLs in the references go to a general Times of India page, which is not very useful. Can you provide links directly to the articles? Since your magazine article is scanned, you can email the jpg and pdf files to me. To do so, please first send me an email and I will reply with my email address. - MrX 18:59, 21 May 2013 (UTC)[reply]
I've looked at the articles that you forwarded. If I am interpreting them correctly, most of them seem to be articles that Om Swami wrote for The Speakingtree, or in one case, a quote from him under the heading "Masterstrokes". Like his books, these can not be used as references to establish his notability. Also, the document that you scanned for Toronto Maharudra 2013 is not a reliable source for establishing notability. In the simplest terms, we are looking for newspaper or magazine articles (not advertisements, advertorials, press releases, programs or promotional articles) that discuss the subject in a journalistic manner, or books that discuss the subject, or the subject works. I posted a "Weak Keep" !vote to the AfD because the television interview may help establish notability, assuming it is not simply promotional in nature.
I wanted to mention that I agreed to "adopt" you on the expectation that you came to Wikipedia with the primary purpose of helping build the encyclopedia. From your edits, it appears that you are here to work on this one article. We refer to such users as single purpose accounts. There's nothing wrong with being a single purpose account, but if your primary goal is to promote Om Swami, then I really can't help you any more than I already have. - MrX 20:05, 23 May 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Dear MrX, I truly appreciate your help and guidance so far. I can assure you that our intention is not to promote Om Swami. We are two contributors who came up with the idea of sharing this Article on Wiki with the sole intention of providing knowledge about him and his work. If you see our Article history, we have edited the article many a times based on the feedback from the editors regarding its tone and contents. It is only through the feedback, we realized our mistakes. We even got The Citation Barnstar once! This was a learning experience for us and I personally have learned so many things about Wiki and the guidelines while working on this article. If you think it still sounds promotional, I am happy to change any part that seems promotional. Om Swami is new and I have forwarded you what I have to support his notability so far. We will have more and better sources in few months. If you think that we need to wait bit more, Can we recall the Article instead of deleting it and publish it later when we have strong sources.

I asked for adoption because I saw this option available on the help section for new users. I was looking for guidance on how we could save this article from deletion and you helped us a great deal. I did not know that I could contribute to the encyclopedia other than the Article I am working on. I am actually proud of myself that I learned so many new things. If you think I can help the encyclopedia in any way, I can for surely try but my knowledge is only limited to editing the Article. Thank you again for your guidance.

Anjumodgil (talk) 17:57, 24 May 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Just so you know, you can go to the AfD page and make a case for keeping the article. I'm less concerned about the promotional tone of the article than I am about the subject possibly not being notable enough for inclusion per our standards (WP:NOTABILITY - have you read these guidelines?). Specifically, the notability guidelines for authors (WP:AUTHOR) establish criteria for notability for subjects such as Om Swami.
While I'm happy to help new users, the adoption program is really oriented toward mentoring editors who want to contribute on a long term basis, across multiple article or in multiple areas of the encyclopedia.
If the article is deleted, you can request a WP:REFUND and have the article emailed to you or userfied so that you can continue to work on it. You can also simply copy it to your sandbox and continue working on it. You can add this template (Template:User_draft) to the top of the page when you create it in you user space. Please see WP:MADEDRAFT for further guidance. - MrX 20:43, 24 May 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks MrX. Are we supposed to comment on the project page or the talk page of the AfD page? I just posted a comment on the talk page of the AfD. Regards,Anjumodgil (talk) 05:30, 25 May 2013 (UTC)[reply]

You should add your comment on the AfD project page, formatting it like the others. - MrX 11:42, 25 May 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks MrX-Anjumodgil (talk) 13:16, 25 May 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Dear MrX, Can I ask you a question? Is it okay if we put the links to the articles on speaking tree on the AFD project page? We added them to the external links section but not sure if editors are viewing those sources. Thanks. Anjumodgil (talk) 16:53, 28 May 2013 (UTC)[reply]
