Scorelines[edit]

Hello. I think perhaps you're confusing how scores are listed in tables of results or in headlines of match reports with how they're written in standard English. Obviously in a list, the home team is listed first, so their score will appear first. But in spoken or written (British) English, which I'm guessing the Lamela article uses, the score of the winning team team you're writing about comes first: they won 1–0 or they lost 1–0. It has no implication as to where they were playing. If we need to explain where the team was playing, we say they won 1–0 at home to Foo FC, or they lost 1–0 away to Template FC.

The usage was consistent throughout the article, before you changed the Cardiff City result format. E.g. in the 2013–14 season section, "Lamela made his debut for Tottenham as a 75th-minute substitute in a 1–0 North London derby loss to Arsenal at the Emirates Stadium" and "Tottenham were beaten 6–0 by Manchester City"; in the 2014–15 section, "match at AEL and assisted goals for Roberto Soldado and Harry Kane to secure a 2–1 win against the Cypriot club"; in the International career section, "putting Argentina 2–0 ahead against Germany, in an eventual 4–2 win". cheers, Struway2 (talk) 22:14, 23 December 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Thank you for trying to improve the article Sebastian Larsson, but I've undone your changes to scoreline formats. I accept entirely that your preferred format is used to some extent, although not that frequently in literate British-English prose. But Wikipedia's Manual of Style requires that, where no specific guideline applies to something, as appears to be the case here, we should maintain consistent usage throughout an article and we shouldn't change from one acceptable style to another just because we like it better. Please see the relevant part of the MoS, at Wikipedia:Manual of Style/Dates and numbers. The second paragraph says:

Where this manual provides options, consistency should be maintained within an article unless there is a good reason to do otherwise. The Arbitration Committee has ruled that editors should not change an article from one guideline-defined style to another without a substantial reason unrelated to mere choice of style, and that revert-warring over optional styles is unacceptable. If discussion cannot determine which style to use in an article, defer to the style used by the first major contributor.

Again, the article Sebastian Larsson was consistent in its use of the standard British team-you're-talking-about-goes-first format for scorelines before you changed it, and was inconsistent afterwards. If you create your own articles, or if you're standardising an existing article that doesn't have a stable formatting history, it's absolutely fine to use your preferred format, but please don't keep changing stable articles.
On another note, you could save youself a lot of work if you followed the advice at WP:NOTBROKEN, which says that we shouldn't bother changing working redirects to pipe to the actual target, like changing [[Bolton Wanderers]] to [[Bolton Wanderers F.C.|Bolton Wanderers]], and it can be detrimental to do so.

Another editor queried what I'd written here, and when I looked again, it made me realise that what I wrote in the first place, that the score of the winning team comes first, is correct in British English. we certainly can reach a compromise here 1 - he's not known SIMPLY as "Ruben Micael", that's TWO names, "simply" is for one (at least Portuguese broadcasters have this idiot custom - and I'm not being racist, I'm also Portuguese - of addressing ALL players by two names, sometimes three, but this guys is known as Micael, period, as much as Wayne Rooney is known as Rooney and Iker Casillas is known as Casillas); 2 - full names in storyline please, compression is for box.

MOS[edit]

Hello. Couple of things I've noticed with your copyediting that you're doing contrary to the Manual of Style:

  1. with numbers in millions, the digit(s) should be separated from the word million with a non-breaking space, not an ordinary space, so that the digit and the word don't get split at a line break. So the markup should read £2.6 million or £2.6{{nbsp}}million, not just £2.6 million. And after it's been written out in full once, it's perfectly acceptable to abbreviate any further instances to £nnnM without any internal spacing. See MOS:NUMERAL and MOS:NBSP.
  2. with adverbs ending in -ly, as in "he signed for newly promoted Watford", the "newly promoted" bit shouldn't be hyphenated: see MOS:HYPHEN use 3 bullet point 4.

Adjusting Wikilinks[edit]

Hello, I have seen you often go around articles "fixing" redirects, for example changing [[Diego Ribas da Cunha|Diego]] to [[Diego (footballer, born 1985)|Diego]]. There is really no reason to go around doing this, as per WP:DONOTFIXIT, it is generally counterproductive (as long as the way the link is displayed does not change). Also, please be careful when changing how names are displayed. For example, I've seen you have changed [[Douglas Costa]] to [[Douglas Costa|Costa]]. first of all, I am not quite sure why did you thank me for my edits in this player's article when I reverted you more than anything else. Of course, I'll assume good faith on your part and think nothing more about it.

I have now reached more compromise between your version and mine, but still: 1 - SPORTING CP in box is quite enough (and even there I don't think it's necessary unless there are more "Sportings" to a player's career, then we have to differentiate), in storyline SPORTING is 100% sufficient, if a reader, looking at the box and the wording, does not come to understand that "Sporting" and "Sporting CP" are the same thing, then probably they should not be reading sports-related articles.

2 - regarding the third paragraph in Sporting's sub-section, no need to say "defender" twice; 3 - I sometimes write "net" instead of "score" to avoid the wording getting too "mechanical", ESPECIALLY when we already have written "scores"/"scored" in any given line; 4 - overall, I still do not see the problem of writing names of clubs in full in storyline, really.

Thank you for your formal warning. I added diacritics to team names, not players – I believe that this fell outside the "rule", given that there appears to be some inconsistency across some articles whether diacritics are added to formal team names at all (e.g., within 2013–14 Washington Capitals season, which Andre Burakovsky (not André Burakovsky) was selected from the Malmö Redhawks, not the Malmo Redhawks. After the revert, it continues to read Malmö Redhawks. Further, as I check general team pages (e.g. Toronto Maple Leafs, Boston Bruins, etc.), I see that locations are presented with their formal diacritics, as per the title of the main Wikipedia page they are linked to (e.g. Košice, České Budějovice, Malmö, etc.). I suppose I assumed too quickly that if North American hockey pages can present those locations with their official diacritics, the same reasoning might suggest that teams from those cities (and teams generally) ought also to be presented with their diacritics (HC Košice, HC České Budějovice, Malmö Redhawks, etc.). I apologize for that and the disruption that it caused. I understand and appreciate the non-use of diacritics for player names, as the NHL does not do this. May I confirm then that this non-use also applies to team names, but not locations (e.g., can I assume that the 2013–14 Washington Capitals season page is in error for presenting "Malmö Redhawks")?
As for the adding draft picks to team names, and as I see that you are already aware, there were several team season articles (from recent seasons) in which subsequent draft selections were listed after players traded (pages that were not edited by myself). Many of these have since been reverted by yourself. I was following that earlier precedent, which I now see should not have been used to begin with due to the lack of consensus. I apologize for that. Trust me, that warning was the last thing that I wanted to do because normally your edits are quite useful and overall help the project. The birthplace locations with diacritics is correct per WP:MOS as there is no current exception for local WikiProject guidelines for those. When it comes to team and player names though, in any North American articles we are supposed to apply them with an English only lense (I ran into this issue last year). If you need a quick reference for the correct formatting look to the 2018 draft as there are some good examples there and I know that you'll pick it up quickly.
As far as listing players taken with a traded draft pick in those tables, that's something that we are never supposed to do. I understand why you made that mistake by looking at the formatting in the 2018–19 team season articles (I'm aware of the editor who did that, but they are not currently active and I'll deal with them should they reappear and start doing that again). That stuff never should have been there in the first place and that was a failure of myself and a few others that are supposed to remove stuff like if it gets added. If you want a good example to use for the trade tables in a team season article, look at what is being used in the yearly transactions article. As that is the type of formatting that we're looking for to be added. Also if you're ever unsure about proper formatting just ask at the ice hockey WikiProject or myself directly if you prefer, we're more than willing to answer questions.
