Administrators' newsletter – April 2018

News and updates for administrators from the past month (March 2018).

Administrator changes

added 331dotCordless LarryClueBot NG
removed Gogo DodoPb30SebastiankesselSeicerSoLando

Guideline and policy news

  • Administrators who have been desysopped due to inactivity are now required to have performed at least one (logged) administrative action in the past 5 years in order to qualify for a resysop without going through a new RfA.
  • Editors who have been found to have engaged in sockpuppetry on at least two occasions after an initial indefinite block, for whatever reason, are now automatically considered banned by the community without the need to start a ban discussion.
  • The notability guideline for organizations and companies has been substantially rewritten following the closure of this request for comment. Among the changes, the guideline more clearly defines the sourcing requirements needed for organizations and companies to be considered notable.
  • The six-month autoconfirmed article creation trial (ACTRIAL) ended on 14 March 2018. The post-trial research report has been published. A request for comment is now underway to determine whether the restrictions from ACTRIAL should be implemented permanently.

Technical news

Arbitration

  • The Arbitration Committee is considering a change to the discretionary sanctions procedures which would require an editor to appeal a sanction to the community at WP:AE or WP:AN prior to appealing directly to the Arbitration Committee at WP:ARCA.

Miscellaneous

  • A discussion has closed which concluded that administrators are not required to enable email, though many editors suggested doing so as a matter of best practice.
  • The Foundations' Anti-Harassment Tools team has released the Interaction Timeline. This shows a chronologic history for two users on pages where they have both made edits, which may be helpful in identifying sockpuppetry and investigating editing disputes.

National Statuary Hall Collection

I found it confusing to have the American Statuary Hall reference, without at least “see also”. The template is about the collection, not the Hall. Anyone clicking on the heading will get a reference to the Hall right away. Anyway, I’m not happy with you having put it back, as I think it has a negative effect (causing confusion). deisenbe (talk) 09:31, 3 April 2018 (UTC)

My original edit. My reasoning was that the Hall is directly related to the topic, and having it on the template adds to the map of information available on Wikipedia about the collection, and, importantly, it allows the template to be on the National Statuary Hall page (some stickers remove templates if the topic isn't listed). The main concern I had looking at the template was solved by AB, moving the "Other" section to after the main statue collection list. Good template. Does it need a small but defining image? Thanks. Randy Kryn (talk) 11:30, 3 April 2018 (UTC)
@Deisenbe: Thanks for commenting here. Actually, I had reverted to a previous version of the template to add back List of sculptures in the National Statuary Hall Collection, and wasn't specifically focused on the NSH article. However, I agree with User:Randy Kryn, I think the article is directly related to the collection and worth keeping. I suggest we move this discussion to the template talk page. ---Another Believer (Talk) 15:02, 3 April 2018 (UTC)

Thank you

for fixing John Campbell Greenway (Borglum) in all sorts of ways. On last Wednesday (the day before yesterday) I decided to track the statue down, which I did and was informed that as far as anyone knew, I was the first person to come and visit the archives just to see the statue. Also the first person who had heard of John Greenway, or of Gutzon Borglum for that matter. Life is good. The picture of the Tucson one was from a dozen years ago. Carptrash (talk) 23:55, 18 May 2018 (UTC)

@Carptrash: No problem! I've enjoyed working on this group of articles, and I can't believe how close we are to having entries for all current and former statues in the collection! ---Another Believer (Talk) 00:08, 19 May 2018 (UTC)

WP:Politics task force

I'm trying to start a Gun Politics task force within WP:Politics (see proposal here), but there doesn't seem to be much activity within the project right now. Do you know where I might find help or information about setting up the page, building templates, etc? –dlthewave 02:21, 9 April 2018 (UTC)

@Dlthewave: I've set up several WikiProject, but mostly just by copying what I saw at other WikiProjects. I'm not sure if there are any tools/resources at Wikipedia:WikiProject Council or Wikipedia:WikiProject X, but you might ask for help at one or both of those pages. ---Another Believer (Talk) 03:28, 9 April 2018 (UTC)

Review trade

Hi there. Noticed you've just nominated March for Our Lives Portland for GAN in the 'Culture, sociology and psychology' section. My nomination in that section, Death of Ms Dhu, is directly above yours. Feel like a trade? Or if you'd like to review something more protest related, I've got Riot shield nominated for GAN as well haha. No worries if you're too busy or not interested though. Just start a review for one if you're interested and I'll review yours in return. Freikorp (talk) 22:38, 10 April 2018 (UTC)

@Freikorp: Thanks for the trade offer, and I do wish I could reciprocate, but I do not complete Good article reviews. I hope someone else can review your articles sooner than later. ---Another Believer (Talk) 23:38, 10 April 2018 (UTC)

OneClickArchiver

@WWGB: You might not know how to help, and that's fine, but I have OneClickArchiver installed but I never see the option to archive talk page sections, and I'm not sure why. I've tried to get help here, but still can't tell what's wrong. I saw you use the tool recently and I really wish I could figure this out. Any ideas? Is there something you do to pages before archiving talk page sections? This tool used to work for me, but I have not been able to use it in a long time. ---Another Believer (Talk) 02:03, 15 April 2018 (UTC)

Did you follow the process described in the "Installation" section at User:Technical 13/Scripts/OneClickArchiver? It worked for me. I can't help with technical information, you might have to place Template:Help me on your talk page. Regards, WWGB (talk) 02:36, 15 April 2018 (UTC)

I get it, but I didn't see any other solution. It would have made a mess on the redirect target page. Going to different pages for similar titles when you don't know which one is the right one is too confusing.— Vchimpanzee • talk • contributions • 18:00, 26 April 2018 (UTC)

Drafting articles

Hello,

I noticed your article Cannabis policy of the Barack Obama administration. It appears to be quite short at the moment (and may fail WP:GNG). Although you're the more experienced editor, I'd like to suggest that you work on this as a draft and expand it before moving it to the mainspace. LittlePuppers (talk) 00:43, 27 April 2018 (UTC)

@LittlePuppers: Thanks, but an active work in progress. ---Another Believer (Talk) 00:44, 27 April 2018 (UTC)
Sure, I realize that it's a work in progress (which is why I didn't immediately tag it with something or another or nominate for CSD). Is there any consensus about drafting in the userspace/namespace/articlespace - it's coming along quite nicely as we speak, however I'd argue that something starting as a one-sentence, two-citation piece shouldn't be immediately in the article namespace. LittlePuppers (talk) 00:51, 27 April 2018 (UTC)
Ok, thanks for the suggestion. ---Another Believer (Talk) 00:52, 27 April 2018 (UTC)
No problem - it technically passes GNG now with 4 sources, so it just needs some expansion (which you're working on). If you don't want to create it as a draft, you could also just spend a few more minutes on it before publishing (which is what I did with my first article - though I doubt I knew the draft namespace existed back then). Either way, contributing something is better than nothing. LittlePuppers (talk) 01:02, 27 April 2018 (UTC)
Thanks, you've made your point, and I agree, something > nothing. ---Another Believer (Talk) 01:03, 27 April 2018 (UTC)

Obama policies vs personal use

Do you think List of United States politicians who have acknowledged cannabis use and Choom Gang are worth mentioning at the Obama policies article? ☆ Bri (talk) 00:48, 27 April 2018 (UTC)

@Bri: I would actually pose this question on the article's talk page. I have a feeling this one might get some attention from other editors. Someone has already posted above. IMO, neither of these links are specifically about his administration. Perhaps this article will grow to a point where background context might be appropriate, but I think for now we should focus on his presidency. ---Another Believer (Talk) 00:50, 27 April 2018 (UTC)
I'm scratching my head over this one. The acknowledged drug use of Clinton, Obama and Bush (43) seem to be relevant to their policies and highlight the fact that they are a new generation from the WWII veteran era presidents. ☆ Bri (talk) 17:46, 27 April 2018 (UTC)
@Bri: Ok, feel free to update the article appropriately! :) ---Another Believer (Talk) 21:49, 27 April 2018 (UTC)

WikiCup 2018 May newsletter

The second round of the 2018 WikiCup has now finished. Most contestants who advanced to the next round scored upwards of 100 points, but two with just 10 points managed to scrape through into round 3. Our top scorers in the last round were:

  • Scotland Cas Liber, our winner in 2016, with three featured articles
  • Republic of Texas Iazyges, with nine good articles and lots of bonus points
  • India Yashthepunisher, a first time contestant, with two featured lists
  • Cascadia (independence movement) SounderBruce, a finalist last year, with seventeen good topic articles
  • United States Usernameunique, a first time contestant, with fourteen DYKs
  • San Francisco Muboshgu, a seasoned competitor, with three ITNs and
  • South Carolina Courcelles, another first time contestant, with twenty-seven GARs

So far contestants have achieved twelve featured articles between them and a splendid 124 good articles. Commendably, 326 GARs have been completed during the course of the 2018 WikiCup, so the backlog of articles awaiting GA review has been reduced as a result of contestants' activities. As we enter the third round, remember that any content promoted after the end of round 2 but before the start of round 3 can be claimed in round 3. Remember too that you must claim your points within 14 days of "earning" them. When doing GARs, please make sure that you check that all the GA criteria are fully met; most of the GARs are fine, but a few have been a bit skimpy.

If you are concerned that your nomination—whether it is at good article nominations, a featured process, or anywhere else—will not receive the necessary reviews, please list it on Wikipedia:WikiCup/Reviews Needed (remember to remove your listing when no longer required). Questions are welcome on Wikipedia talk:WikiCup, and the judges are reachable on their talk pages or by email. Good luck! If you wish to start or stop receiving this newsletter, please feel free to add or remove your name from Wikipedia:WikiCup/Newsletter/Send. Administrators' newsletter – May 2018

News and updates for administrators from the past month (April 2018).

Administrator changes

added None
removed ChochopkCoffeeGryffindorJimpKnowledge SeekerLankiveilPeridonRjd0060

Guideline and policy news

  • The ability to create articles directly in mainspace is now indefinitely restricted to autoconfirmed users.
  • A proposal is being discussed which would create a new "event coordinator" right that would allow users to temporarily add the "confirmed" flag to new user accounts and to create many new user accounts without being hindered by a rate limit.

Technical news

  • AbuseFilter has received numerous improvements, including an OOUI overhaul, syntax highlighting, ability to search existing filters, and a few new functions. In particular, the search feature can be used to ensure there aren't existing filters for what you need, and the new equals_to_any function can be used when checking multiple namespaces. One major upcoming change is the ability to see which filters are the slowest. This information is currently only available to those with access to Logstash.
  • When blocking anonymous users, a cookie will be applied that reloads the block if the user changes their IP. This means in most cases, you may no longer need to do /64 range blocks on residential IPv6 addresses in order to effectively block the end user. It will also help combat abuse from IP hoppers in general. This currently only occurs when hard-blocking accounts.
  • The block notice shown on mobile will soon be more informative and point users to a help page on how to request an unblock, just as it currently does on desktop.
  • There will soon be a calendar widget at Special:Block, making it easier to set expiries for a specific date and time.

Speedy deletion nomination of City Liquidators

Resolved

If this is the first article that you have created, you may want to read the guide to writing your first article.

You may want to consider using the Article Wizard to help you create articles.

A tag has been placed on City Liquidators requesting that it be speedily deleted from Wikipedia. This has been done under section A7 of the criteria for speedy deletion, because the article appears to be about a company, corporation or organization, but it does not credibly indicate how or why the subject is important or significant: that is, why an article about that subject should be included in an encyclopedia. Under the criteria for speedy deletion, such articles may be deleted at any time. Please read more about what is generally accepted as notable.

If you think this page should not be deleted for this reason, you may contest the nomination by visiting the page and clicking the button labelled "Contest this speedy deletion". This will give you the opportunity to explain why you believe the page should not be deleted. However, be aware that once a page is tagged for speedy deletion, it may be deleted without delay. Please do not remove the speedy deletion tag from the page yourself, but do not hesitate to add information in line with Wikipedia's policies and guidelines. If the page is deleted, and you wish to retrieve the deleted material for future reference or improvement, then please contact the deleting administrator. {{u|zchrykng}} {T|C} 22:22, 4 May 2018 (UTC)

User:Buster7 submitted the following nomination for Editor of the Week:

Surprisingly, Another Believer was Editor of the Week 5 years ago. Since then he has amassed over 250000 edits with 55% in Mainspace, created over 4500 new pages and always, always, always uses the edit summary to explain his actions. Discussions, consultations, deliberations and concessions are the benchmarks of editors working toward a common goal. One of the more challenging editing tasks is to manage and manipulate input into an article that is in flux, an article that is developing daily. Such an article was the recent March For Our Lives. Another Believer was one of a team of editors that came together and worked on the maps before, during, and after the event and did a fantastic job. One need only look at Talk:March For Our Lives#Maps to see the positive interactions that resulted in a timely addition to the encyclopedia. It would be a difficult task to find a more deserving Editor of the Week.

Interview invitation to follow up your experience with our recommendation tool

Hi Another Believer,

Hope you are doing well! In the past several weeks, we did some analysis and evaluation on our tool. An exciting finding is that invitations from WikiProject organizers increased the edits of new (experienced) editors about 40% within the target project compared to new editors who didn’t receive anything!

I want to have an interview with you about your experience of using our tool. The interview will be about 30 - 45 minutes via phone, Skype or Google Hangout whichever works best for you. You will receive a $10 gift card as compensation afterwards. Please let me know if you could help. Thank you! Bobo.03 (talk) 21:09, 6 May 2018 (UTC)

Hi Another Believer, hope you are doing well! Just wonder if you'd have any interest in chatting with me about your experience using our tool? Thank you! Bobo.03 (talk) 23:59, 14 May 2018 (UTC)

Before making redirects

Like Stay Open and the other two you made for that name, can you please make sure the song or whatever the title of the thing you're creating a redirect for is mentioned by name at the target article? Otherwise this can look like WP:OR. I'm sure you're aware it's a common feature of WP:RFD discussions that one of the reasons for deletion can be if it is not mentioned by name at the target article. Even if it's been confirmed by a musician or you've seen another editor add it in on another article, it needs to be mentioned at the target, so please make sure it's mentioned there by name or sourced where you're pointing it to in future. Thanks. Ss112 00:30, 10 May 2018 (UTC)

Fixing pings

Just a heads up: luckily I was watching the page anyway:

Hello Another Believer. I noticed your attempt to fix your ping in this edit. That method does not work. The notifications system only informs a user when you link their username in the same saved edit as you successfully sign your post. A ping cannot be fixed in a later edit by adding a signature you forgot, by fixing your botched signature, or by fixing the user name link. Instead, you have to link the user name and successfully sign in a manner that the software parses as a new line of text. Help:Fixing failed pings has more information about the issues involved and provides suggested methods to successfully perform the fix.

Event coordinator granted

After reviewing your request for the "eventcoordinator" permission, I have enabled the flag on your account. Keep in mind these things:

  • The event coordinator right removes the limit on the maximum number of new accounts that can be created in a 24-hour period.
  • The event coordinator right allows you to temporarily add the "confirmed" permission to newly created accounts. You should not grant this for more than 10 days.
  • The event coordinator right is not a status symbol. If it remains unused, it is likely to be removed. Abuse of the event coordinator right will result in its removal by an administrator.
  • Please note, if you were previously a member of the "account creator" group, your flag may have been converted to this new group.

If you no longer require the right, let me know, or ask any other administrator. Drop a note on my talk page if you run into troubles or have any questions about appropriate/inappropriate use of the event coordinator right. Happy editing! — xaosflux Talk 21:54, 14 May 2018 (UTC)

Your input would be appreciated

Hey Another Believer, you're involved in music articles quite a bit, so if you get time, could you maybe add your opinion to Wikipedia talk:WikiProject Albums/Album article style guide#"Production" should be restored? It's about the use of "production" over "producer" in personnel sections. Thanks if you can. Ss112 02:13, 16 May 2018 (UTC)

@Ss112: I hadn't given "producer" vs. "production" much thought before. I definitely see your point -- "production" is more in line with "engineering" and "mixing", but I also kind of see Walter's point that "production", at least to me, does sometimes include engineering, mixing, etc., and the producer role is more than this. I think I'll give this some thought, see how other editors weigh in, and revisit later. I'm interested in how this turns out, but I'm not sure I want to comment immediately. Thanks for the invite. ---Another Believer (Talk) 02:22, 16 May 2018 (UTC)

Deletion discussion about Blair St. Clair

Resolved

Hello, Another Believer,

I wanted to let you know that there's a discussion about whether Blair St. Clair should be deleted. Your comments are welcome at Wikipedia:Articles for deletion/Blair St. Clair .

If you're new to the process, articles for deletion is a group discussion (not a vote!) that usually lasts seven days. If you need it, there is a guide on how to contribute. Last but not least, you are highly encouraged to continue improving the article; just be sure not to remove the tag about the deletion nomination from the top.

Thanks,

Best, Barkeep49 (talk) 19:27, 24 May 2018 (UTC)

@Barkeep49: Waste of time to delete. Just redirect back... ---Another Believer (Talk) 19:39, 24 May 2018 (UTC)
Maybe I didn't make that clear enough in my comment but I completely agree it should be a redirect. The page came up at WP:NPP as unreviewed after the initial change from the redirect. I did one round of looking for notability then, and restored the redirect. When I was reverted (espeically by a different user), my choices (so as to not edit war) were either leave it or AfD. I did further research into notability the outcome of which lead me to go AfD. But yes I feel pretty strongly that my interpretation of guidelines (as also echoed by Bearcat) is correct and that the right outcome here is redirect as notability is definitely possible down the road. Best, Barkeep49 (talk) 20:14, 24 May 2018 (UTC)
@Barkeep49: I do apologize for not seeing that your previous attempt to redirect was reverted. You might conceded on your AfD nomination that redirecting is appropriate and I think you will get much support for this. ---Another Believer (Talk) 20:16, 24 May 2018 (UTC)
On a different topic I just saw the note at the top of the talk page. When you get an article close to GA feel free to list it and ping me. I'd be happy to review it and like to work collaboratively through that process with editors to improve articles. Best, Barkeep49 (talk) 20:18, 24 May 2018 (UTC)

File:Call My Life, Blair St. Clair.jpg

Hi, I'm RonBot, a script that checks new non-free file uploads. I have found that the subject image that you recently uploaded was more than 5% in excess of the Non-free content guideline size of 100,000 pixels. I have tagged the image for a standard reduction, which (for jpg/gif/png/svg files) normally happens within a day. Please check the reduced image, and make sure that the image is not excessively corrupted. Other files will be added to Category:Wikipedia non-free file size reduction requests for manual processing. There is a full seven-day period before the original oversized image will be hidden; during that time you might want to consider editing the original image yourself (perhaps an initial crop to allow a smaller reduction or none at all). A formula for calculation the desired size can be found at WP:Image resolution, along with instructions on how to tag the image in the rare cases that it requires an oversized image (typically about 0.2% of non-free uploads are tagged as necessarily oversized). Please contact the bot owner if you have any questions, or you can ask them at Wikipedia talk:Non-free content. RonBot (talk) 17:23, 12 July 2018 (UTC)

I don't know why it's doing that. Usually the text updates automatically when an article appears on the Main Page and afterwards. Might be worth asking about at WP:VPT; perhaps someone there will know what to do. Giants2008 (Talk) 21:04, 22 June 2018 (UTC)
All it needed was a WP:PURGE. --Redrose64 🌹 (talk) 18:45, 23 June 2018 (UTC)
@Redrose64: Ah, of course, now I feel silly! Thank you. ---Another Believer (Talk) 21:09, 23 June 2018 (UTC)
The Category:Featured lists that have not appeared on the main page and Category:Featured lists that have appeared on the main page categories are also automatic, being built into the same code that produces the "This article will appear on Wikipedia's Main Page as Today's featured list on ..."/"This article appeared on Wikipedia's Main Page as Today's featured list on ..." text (or neither), and hence depends upon the date in of the |maindate= parameter being past or future (being blank counts as future for the categories), so this edit should not have been necessary. I've undone it. Related to that, please note that on the rare occasions that manual categories are necessary on a talk page, they should go in the lead section, since if placed at the bottom of the page they become part of the last thread and are liable to be archived at some future date. --Redrose64 🌹 (talk) 06:49, 24 June 2018 (UTC)

University buildings and notability

I saw List of Marylhurst University buildings and some others in the Portland area at WP:US50. Just asking before I start an inventory of some local universities up here, maybe Northwest University which is a lesser-known institution. Have you had problems with notability with such lists in the past? ☆ Bri (talk) 17:04, 29 May 2018 (UTC)

@Bri: No, and I've seen similar lists for many college and universities. Check out Category:Lists of university and college buildings in the United States. ---Another Believer (Talk) 19:38, 29 May 2018 (UTC)
Wow, as a body, this really looks contrary to Wikipedia standards. E.g. Campus of Elon University -- 15k article text and not a single independent reference. List of Fairfield University buildings includes the name of every individual townhouse. ☆ Bri (talk) 20:41, 29 May 2018 (UTC)

Guideline and policy news

Technical news

  • IP-based cookie blocks should be deployed to English Wikipedia in June. This will cause the block of a logged-out user to be reloaded if they change IPs. This means in most cases, you may no longer need to do /64 range blocks on residential IPv6 addresses in order to effectively block the end user. It will also help combat abuse from IP hoppers in general. For the time being, it only affects users of the desktop interface.
  • The Wikimedia Foundation's Anti-Harassment Tools team will build granular types of blocks in 2018 (e.g. a block from uploading or editing specific pages, categories, or namespaces, as opposed to a full-site block). Feedback on the concept may be left at the talk page.
  • There is now a checkbox on Special:ListUsers to let you see only users in temporary user groups.
  • It is now easier for blocked mobile users to see why they were blocked.

Arbitration

  • A recent technical issue with the Arbitration Committee's spam filter inadvertently caused all messages sent to the committee through Wikipedia (i.e. Special:EmailUser/Arbitration Committee) to be discarded. If you attempted to send an email to the Arbitration Committee via Wikipedia between May 16 and May 31, your message was not received and you are encouraged to resend it. Messages sent outside of these dates or directly to the Arbitration Committee email address were not affected by this issue.

June 2018 GOCE newsletter

Guild of Copy Editors June 2018 News

Welcome to the June 2018 GOCE newsletter, in which you will find Guild updates since the February edition. Progress continues to be made on the copyediting backlog, which has been reduced to 7 months and reached a new all-time low. Requests continue to be handled efficiently this year, with 272 completed by the end of May (an average completion time of 10.5 days). Fewer than 10% of these waited longer than 20 days, and the longest wait time was 29 days.

Wikipedia in general, and the Guild in particular, experienced a deep loss with the death on 20 March of Corinne. Corinne (a GOCE coordinator since 1 July 2016) was a tireless aide on the requests page, and her peerless copyediting is a part of innumerable GAs and FAs. Her good cheer, courtesy and tact are very much missed.

March drive: The goal was to remove June, July and August 2017 from our backlog and all February 2018 Requests (a total of 219 articles). This drive was an outstanding success, and by the end of the month all but eight of these articles were cleared. Of the 33 editors who signed up, 19 recorded 277 copy edits (425,758 words).

April blitz: This one-week copy-editing blitz ran from 15 through 21 April, focusing on Requests and the last eight articles tagged in August 2017. At the end of the week there were only 17 pending requests, with none older than 17 days. Of the nine editors who signed up, eight editors completed 22 copy edits (62,412 words).

May drive: We set out to remove September, October and November 2017 from our backlog and all April 2018 Requests (a total of 298 articles). There was great success this month with the backlog more than halved from 1,449 articles at the beginning of the month to a record low of 716 articles. Officially, of the 20 who signed up, 15 editors recorded 151 copy edits (248,813 words).

RonBot (talk) 17:11, 6 June 2018 (UTC)

Trump books

Hello, you mentioned after Crippled America met GA requirements that there are more Trump books that could use improvements. I should be finished with my current project by the end of the week and would be glad to look at these other books. I am not too picky though I would prefer subjects that need a lot of attention as I tend to re-write articles from scratch.TheGracefulSlick (talk) 19:50, 7 June 2018 (UTC)

LGBT writers

I think that discussion has been had by WP:LGBT before, without ever resolving or leading to any action. I'm of the view that if subdividing Category:LGBT writers from the United States is desired, it would be more useful to split it up by type of writing (novelists, short story writers, poets, non-fiction writers, etc.) than by state — that's a much more useful and WP:DEFINING way to subcategorize writers, so it's the one that IMO should be tackled first. AWB would definitely make it easy to do that, since one could easily run a list comparison between the LGBT writers category and things like Category:LGBT novelists, Category:LGBT poets, Category:American novelists and Category:American poets to generate the batches. I do still occasionally come across some stragglers who for some strange reason have been catted as "LGBT writers from the United States" but not as American novelists or American poets or whatever — but those become easier to find after the category's been diffused to a more manageable size too. Bearcat (talk) 01:42, 9 June 2018 (UTC)

@Bearcat: Thanks. If AWB is an option, I think I'll leave this to the experts. I appreciate the feedback. ---Another Believer (Talk) 03:57, 9 June 2018 (UTC)

Notice

The article Porter Block (Victoria, British Columbia) has been proposed for deletion. The proposed deletion notice added to the article should explain why.

While all constructive contributions to Wikipedia are appreciated, pages may be deleted for any of several reasons.

You may prevent the proposed deletion by removing the {{proposed deletion/dated}} notice, but please explain why in your edit summary or on the article's talk page.

Please consider improving the page to address the issues raised. Removing {{proposed deletion/dated}} will stop the proposed deletion process, but other deletion processes exist. In particular, the speedy deletion process can result in deletion without discussion, and articles for deletion allows discussion to reach consensus for deletion. Air.light (talk) 00:31, 13 June 2018 (UTC)

@Air.light: Seems you marked Palace Cigar Store for deletion, but I removed the tag since the building is on the Canadian Register of Historic Places. ---Another Believer (Talk) 01:00, 13 June 2018 (UTC)
Thanks for the correction, I cut and pasted the wrong article title over. You should be aware of WP:GNG and WP:GEOFEAT when creating articles like this of historical buildings. A building being in the CRHP is not sufficient reason for notability. Particularly of note from the link here: "Buildings, including private residences and commercial developments may be notable as a result of their historic, social, economic, or architectural importance, but they require significant coverage by reliable, third-party sources to establish notability." Information icon Hello. It appears your talk page is becoming quite lengthy and is in need of archiving. According to Wikipedia's user talk page guidelines; "Large talk pages become difficult to read, strain the limits of older browsers, and load slowly over slow internet connections. Emanuel Santos

Hi, in response to your note at Emanuel Santos, I am reluctant to restart the notability discussion on an article the sculpture. My view is that his first Ronaldo sculpture and the media storm about it are notable, but that any notability Santos and his other works may have are only from association with this sculpture, and they are best covered in the same article. I am also wary that raising a discussion that might result in the loss of the article on Santos. Regards, Verbcatcher (talk) 01:14, 24 June 2018 (UTC)

Question on article

Hello! I am working on an article for Lilian Welsh and am unclear if I should include her in LGBT categories. Several sources refer to a relationship with Mary Sherwood with phrases like "longtime companion," "life partner," "close friend." Welsh and Sherwood are included in the book, To Believe in Women: What Lesbians Have Done For America - A History. Should I list Sherwood in the infobox as a partner? Do you or @Megalibrarygirl: have any thoughts? Thanks :) Thsmi002 (talk) 17:37, 28 June 2018 (UTC)

Wow, Thsmi002, that's an interesting question! Is there a field for partners in the infobox? Megalibrarygirl (talk) 18:55, 28 June 2018 (UTC)
Megalibrarygirl, Right!? I actually did add Sherwood into the partner's field which is described as "For unmarried life partners (of any gender or sexual preference), not business partners." because she is described as a life partner. The sources give the impression that they were indeed in a relationship. Still unsure about the LGBT categories since the sources do not actually state anything more specific. . Thsmi002 (talk) 18:59, 28 June 2018 (UTC)
It's a frustrating thing, Thsmi002, about the "life partner" euphemism. I ran into this with Mary Garrett Hay who was apparently a partner with Carrie Chapman Catt, but because such things weren't talked about. It's a pain. Megalibrarygirl (talk) 19:03, 28 June 2018 (UTC)
This example seems very relevant to Welsh's! Thanks for the suggestions. Thsmi002 (talk) 02:25, 29 June 2018 (UTC)

@Thsmi002 and Megalibrarygirl: I would say the LGBT categories are appropriate, given "To Believe in Women: What Lesbians Have Done For America". Your best bet might be to raise this question on the article's talk page so editors can weigh in on this both short term and long term. ---Another Believer (Talk) 01:20, 29 June 2018 (UTC)

I'll do that. Thanks for your advice! Thsmi002 (talk) 02:25, 29 June 2018 (UTC)

Aquaria draft article

Resolved

While I would hate to spoil the Season 10 of RPDR if you haven't watched it yet, Aquaria won the season and is now in need of her own article. I saw on the Season 10 talk page that you had made a draft page for her pre-finale. If you touch it up a bit to reflect the finale, I say it's good enough to be publish. Johnstone Bennett LGBT?

Extended content

I promise I'm not trying to be a jerk, but was Johnstone Bennett LGBT? The article merely says she "wore masculine clothing and short hair"...? ☆ Bri (talk) 16:45, 30 June 2018 (UTC)

@Bri: Good question, and I wondered the same thing myself. I added to the Wiki Loves Pride list because the article was added to Wikipedia:WikiProject Women in Red/Meetup/79. ---Another Believer (Talk) 16:50, 30 June 2018 (UTC)
@Penny Richards: Do you happen to know anything about her orientation/identity? ---Another Believer (Talk) 16:51, 30 June 2018 (UTC)
@Bri:@Another Believer:I don't, and I appreciate the question because I had it too. She was included in the Transgender Digital Archive and in the Queer Music Heritage pages, which led me to think she was at least of interest to LGBT history. I probably wouldn't have tagged her if she was 'only' a male impersonator on stage, but her everyday dress and chosen name were masculine-coded enough to be a matter of constant comment in press reports. I'm fine with her being left off the list, of course; just wasn't sure what lines were for inclusion of past people. (Probably can't know much more about her, at this distance; but I'd be thrilled if someone found a firmer source on this question.) - Penny Richards (talk) 19:03, 1 July 2018 (UTC)
@Penny Richards: Thanks for replying. I'm ok with leaving her name on the list, but you might want to make a note of this on the article's talk page in case passersby wonder why the article is associated with WikiProject LGBT studies. ---Another Believer (Talk) 19:06, 1 July 2018 (UTC)
@Another Believer: Thinking about how to word it, maybe something like "This article is bannered for WikiProject LGBT because the subject, Johnstone Bennett, is included in some archives of Queer and Transgender topics. The banner does not necessarily mean that the historical subject would herself claim an LGBT identity." How does that sound? (We have this same issue in disability history, btw, so I'd love to find good wording we can adapt those biographies too.) Penny Richards (talk) 19:11, 1 July 2018 (UTC)
@Penny Richards: Seems appropriate to me. ---Another Believer (Talk)
@Another Believer: Cool, will do. Penny Richards (talk) 19:15, 1 July 2018 (UTC)
@Another Believer: Added the same to talk page for Zelma Rawlston, another recent article I started with similar concerns. Penny Richards (talk) 19:27, 1 July 2018 (UTC)

@Bri: Hope this seems appropriate to you, too. ---Another Believer (Talk) 20:13, 1 July 2018 (UTC)

@Another Believer, Bri, and Penny Richards: The {{WikiProject LGBT studies}} banner template provides a parameter |explanation= for this exact purpose. You might put {{WikiProject LGBT studies|explanation=the subject, Johnstone Bennett, is included in some archives of Queer and Transgender topics}} --Redrose64 🌹 (talk) 20:43, 1 July 2018 (UTC)
@Redrose64: Interesting, and thanks for sharing. I had no idea. ---Another Believer (Talk) 20:58, 1 July 2018 (UTC)

WikiCup 2018 July newsletter

The third round of the 2018 WikiCup has now come to an end. The 16 users who made it to the fourth round had at least 227 points. Our top scorers in round 3 were:

  • South Carolina Courcelles, a first time contestant, with 1756 points, a tally built largely on 27 GAs related to the Olympics
  • Scotland Cas Liber, our winner in 2016, with two featured articles and three GAs on natural history and astronomy topics
  • Cascadia (independence movement) SounderBruce, a finalist last year, with a variety of submissions related to transport in the state of Washington

Contestants managed 7 featured articles, 4 featured lists, 120 good articles, 1 good topic, 124 DYK entries, 15 ITN entries, and 132 good article reviews. Over the course of the competition, contestants have completed 458 GA reviews, in comparison to 244 good articles submitted for review and promoted. As we enter the fourth round, remember that any content promoted after the end of round 3 but before the start of round 4 can be claimed in round 4. Please also remember that you must claim your points within 14 days of "earning" them. When doing GARs, please make sure that you check that all the GA criteria are fully met. Please also remember that all submissions must meet core Wikipedia policies, regardless of the review process; several submissions, particularly in abstruse or technical areas, have needed additional work to make them completely verifiable.

Guideline and policy news

  • An RfC about the deletion of drafts closed with a consensus to change the wording of WP:NMFD. Specifically, a draft that has been repeatedly resubmitted and declined at AfC without any substantial improvement may be deleted at MfD if consensus determines that it is unlikely to ever meet the requirements for mainspace and it otherwise meets one of the reasons for deletion outlined in the deletion policy.
  • A request for comment closed with a consensus that the {{promising draft}} template cannot be used to indefinitely prevent a WP:G13 speedy deletion nomination.

Technical news

  • Starting on July 9, the WMF Security team, Trust & Safety, and the broader technical community will be seeking input on an upcoming change that will restrict editing of site-wide JavaScript and CSS to a new technical administrators user group. Bureaucrats and stewards will be able to grant this right per a community-defined process. The intention is to reduce the number of accounts who can edit frontend code to those who actually need to, which in turn lessens the risk of malicious code being added that compromises the security and privacy of everyone who accesses Wikipedia. For more information, please review the FAQ.
  • Syntax highlighting has been graduated from a Beta feature on the English Wikipedia. To enable this feature, click the highlighter icon () in your editing toolbar (or under the hamburger menu in the 2017 wikitext editor). This feature can help prevent you from making mistakes when editing complex templates.
  • IP-based cookie blocks should be deployed to English Wikipedia in July (previously scheduled for June).

Miscellaneous

  • Currently around 20% of admins have enabled two-factor authentication, up from 17% a year ago. If you haven't already enabled it, please consider doing so. Regardless if you use 2FA, please practice appropriate account security by ensuring your password is secure and unique to Wikimedia.

@Z0: I think so, because even if the song is not notable a redirect is better than deleting. ---Another Believer (Talk) 15:31, 5 July 2018 (UTC)

Hello. I wonder if you'd be interested in helping me expand Hale Boggs Federal Complex. Emporis says it was built in 1962, but the Library of Congress says the mid-1970s. Since there are two buildings, one of them must have been built later. I'd also like to know who the architect was, wouldn't you?Zigzig20s (talk) 11:01, 7 July 2018 (UTC)

No, thanks. ---Another Believer (Talk) 01:56, 8 July 2018 (UTC)

Thanks for your help dealing with image vandal this morning. Rereading my comment on the talk page, it looks like I was shouting at you. Actually I was just shouting at passers-by, since that's a common misconception about 3RR that I really wish would be cleared up.

The little shit you were reverting is going to be back again, so here are some things you can do in addition to reverting if you encounter him again:

  • Report the IP at WP:AIV right away. Don't waste one second warning him. I know it says "The user must have been given enough warning(s) to stop their disruptive behavior" in the header. That's because all the exceptions basically fall under WP:BEANS.
  • If you can stand it, go over to Commons, and see if the image was a recent upload (I.E. probably by the vandal himself). If so, upload another image on top of it (e.g. a smiley face, a blank image, Lugo ... anything is better), tag it for speedy deletion, and report the uploader to commons:commons:AIV.
  • If it's a "legit" Commons image, possibly make a request at Mediawiki talk:Bad image list. Images listed at Mediawiki:Bad image list won't display anywhere, not even in old revisions. But response time is slow there.
  • If no one is responding at AIV, try AN/I. But keep in mind WP:DENY of course. Suffusion of Yellow (talk) 23:35, 30 July 2018 (UTC)
@Suffusion of Yellow: Thanks for the note. I didn't think you were yelling at me, and I appreciate the links and reassurance I wasn't violating a rule by reverting vandalism multiple times. I posted on the article's talk page because I was/am concerned editors viewing previous version of the article would see the graphic image. I'm glad this will not be the case. ---Another Believer (Talk) 00:01, 31 July 2018 (UTC)

Fear the Walking Dead

Hey there! Nice work with the FTWD episode articles. They might need some images in their respective infoboxes though as most TWD episode articles have them. Is it okay if you upload a few for me. Thanks! The Optimistic One (talk) 06:39, 14 July 2018 (UTC)

@The Optimistic One: Thanks, but I'm less familiar with grabbing and uploading screenshots under fair use. Maybe post a note at WikiProject Television to see if someone more familiar with Wikipedia's rules re: infobox images can help? ---Another Believer (Talk) 15:46, 14 July 2018 (UTC)

Wes Montgomery pic

I recall that you are an expert at finding album covers. Can you find one for The Incredible Jazz Guitar of Wes Montgomery? The existing one, at least on my screen, is almost too dark to see, and strikes me as a real injustice. Thanks.
Vmavanti (talk) 19:07, 16 July 2018 (UTC)

@Vmavanti: I use Amazon whenever I want to upload album cover. See here, which I'm not sure is any better. ---Another Believer (Talk) 22:12, 16 July 2018 (UTC)

Per WP:NALBUMS, this article has insufficient material to warrant an article - a standalone article is only appropriate when there is enough material to warrant a reasonably detailed article; articles unlikely ever to grow beyond stubs should be merged into the artist's article or discography. I think this should be redirected to the artist page. The editor whose username is Z0 14:48, 19 July 2018 (UTC)

@Z0: Sure thing! You really might consider withdrawing the nomination. There is definitely going to be an article for this album, whether this week or next week, and editor time should be spent elsewhere. ---Another Believer (Talk) 18:52, 19 July 2018 (UTC)

On the hist conf. Monuments article. I tried to undo what I had done, but couldn’t because of edit conflicts. Sorry. deisenbe (talk) 23:24, 20 July 2018 (UTC)

I've created a very short stub. Hopefully others will expand it. Definitely not the same goal as the AD.Zigzig20s (talk) 14:29, 27 July 2018 (UTC)

No mop?

Where's your mop? You're in the Ten Year Society. I thought maybe you got corrupted by power and fell from grace, so I looked at your user rights history expecting to find "Desysopped – Arbitration Enforcement" but nope. You've never had the tools. So I looked for a failed RfA, but Wikipedia:Requests for adminship/Another Believer is red! So the question is: why haven't you sought a mop? — Mr. Guye (talk) (contribs)  16:40, 25 July 2018 (UTC)

@Mr. Guye: Hello! Yeah, I've been asked to jump through the hoop approximately 25 times by various editors during my ten years here (on-wiki, via private email, and even in person), but never took the plunge. I don't really have specific reasons, except that the nomination process seems unnecessarily cumbersome, and I think I have many of the tools available to admins via other user rights. Any particular reason(s) I should seek adminship? ---Another Believer (Talk) 21:09, 25 July 2018 (UTC)
@Another Believer: You may want to read some of this: Wikipedia:Wikipedia Signpost/2018-06-29/Op-ed. Note: very few people are applying. In addition I feel like recently a lot of admins have been blocked, desysopped, or became inactive. I use a (I think CSS) code that marks users that are blocked, and I'm shocked at the amount of long-term editors who've been indefinitely blocked or even banned (maybe I should make a list to prove my point). And then WP:ADMINBACKLOG still needs to be taken care of. Maybe it's just me. Also, what do you mean by you have most of the admin tools through other rights? Only admins can (un)protect pages, (un)delete pages, edit fully-protected pages, (un)block users, grant and revoke user groups, view deleted pages, override the title blacklist, and a lot more.  — Mr. Guye (talk) (contribs)  00:07, 26 July 2018 (UTC)
@Mr. Guye: This last link is very helpful, actually. I'm not sure I've really seen a simple list of rights available to admins, and I will give this a closer look. ---Another Believer (Talk) 00:48, 26 July 2018 (UTC)

Peter L. Cherry House and other "substubs" you started

Hey, Peter L. Cherry House is one out of the worst 100 "NRHP substubs" of all, which is one you created. It would be great if you would put some effort into adding the available National Register document and photos reference to the article and developing it. --Doncram (talk) 03:34, 31 July 2018 (UTC)

You have the majority, I think of the most problematic NRHP articles, listed within [100 NRIS-only articles by prose size]. All of these are within Oregon and Washington, I think. Unlike NRHPs in some other states, you have NRHP documents available online from the National Park Service, but you have not chosen to use those very good sources, instead choosing to leave very undeveloped articles. --Doncram (talk) 03:38, 31 July 2018 (UTC)
