4th GA Cup - Round 2[edit]

WikiProject Good Articles's 2016-2017 GA Cup

Greetings, GA Cup competitors!

December 29th marked the end of the first round, after it was extended from its previously scheduled conclusion at the end of November. Because of the smaller pool of contestants this year, it was decided to keep sign-ups open throughout the month of December.

This extension proved to be very helpful as we saw that more users signed up and completed many reviews. Krishna Chaitanya Velaga earned an impressive 402 points, followed by Cartoon network freak with a close 338 points. Shearonink who signed up after our extension was in third with 170 points.

We had a rule clarification in Round 1 which was that many articles were being passed with blatant copyright violations and plagarism occurring in the articles. Thus, the judges have concluded that if an article is passed even if it has a copyright violation/plagarism, we will not provide points for that article as it wouldn't be considered a "complete review" under the scoring rules.

In the end, 94 articles were reviewed by 14 users who will all advance to Round 2. The judges had planned on having 16 contestants advance but since only 14 did, we are changing the pools in this round. We will be having 2 pools of 3 and 2 pools of 4 in Round 2, with the top 2 in each pool advancing to Round 3 as well as the top participant ("9th place") of all remaining competitors. Round 2 will begin on January 1 at 00:00:00 UTC and will end on January 29 at 23:59:59 UTC. Information about Round 2 and the pools can be found here.

Cheers from 3family6, Figureskatingfan, Jaguar, MrWooHoo, and Zwerg Nase!

DYK for Lolita (Leah LaBelle song)[edit]

On 2 January 2017, Did you know was updated with a fact from the article Lolita (Leah LaBelle song), which you recently created, substantially expanded, or brought to good article status. The fact was ... that the Welsh singer-songwriter Charlotte Church criticised director Diane Martel's music video for the song "Lolita", calling it "an objectionable little number"? The nomination discussion and review may be seen at Template:Did you know nominations/Lolita (Leah LaBelle song). You are welcome to check how many page hits the article got while on the front page (here's how, Lolita (Leah LaBelle song)), and it may be added to the statistics page if the total is over 5,000. Finally, if you know of an interesting fact from another recently created article, then please feel free to suggest it on the Did you know talk page.

DYK for Sorry Mrs. Carter[edit]

On 4 January 2017, Did you know was updated with a fact from the article Sorry Mrs. Carter, which you recently created, substantially expanded, or brought to good article status. The fact was ... that rapper Liv released the song "Sorry Mrs. Carter" as an "open letter" to Beyoncé? The nomination discussion and review may be seen at Template:Did you know nominations/Sorry Mrs. Carter. You are welcome to check how many page hits the article got while on the front page (here's how, Sorry Mrs. Carter), and it may be added to the statistics page if the total is over 5,000. Alyssa Milano discography[edit]

Hello:

I am working on the GOCE c/e for Alyssa Milano discography and have a couple of questions.

The article states: "Prior to her record contract, Milano had contributed to the charity album We Are The World as part of a group of child stars." Wasn’t this actually a single?

Also this – "In 1990, the singer released her first compilation album, The Best in the World: Non-Stop Special Remix/Alyssa's Singles, which spent a total of eight weeks on Japanese chart and reaching its highest position at number nine." I assume the Japanese chart in question is the Oricon Albums Chart so I have made this correction. Please let me know if this is not the case.

F.Y.I. I passed on your other requests as I have edited them in the past. They would likely benefit from a c/e by another editor.

Look forward to hearing from you.

Regards,

Twofingered Typist (talk) 21:00, 5 January 2017 (UTC)[reply]

  • @Twofingered Typist: Thank you for your message. And you are correct that it is a charity single so I have altered this to better reflect that. You were also correct about the Japanese chart being the Oricon Albums Chart so thank you for the correction. I agree that it is best to have another set of eyes on those articles. I hope that it does not appear rude to request another c/e; I just wanted to have another set of eyes before I put these up for FAC sometime in the future. Aoba47 (talk) 23:25, 5 January 2017 (UTC)[reply]
I checked your fixes and tagged the article with the GOCE tag, so it is now completed. I have no problem with another request for an c/e especially since you have added significantly to them in some cases. RegardsTwofingered Typist (talk) 14:01, 6 January 2017 (UTC)[reply]
Thank you! I just wanted to clarify that it was okay. Aoba47 (talk) 17:04, 6 January 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Long time[edit]

Hey, how have you been? I just got back to regular editing here, and was doing a lot of catching up. I will also try to take a look at the FAC on the Russell Family soon, but you seem to be really into Passions, is there anything in particular that attracts you? NumerounovedantTalk 09:21, 7 January 2017 (UTC)[reply]

  • @Numerounovedant: Thank you for your message! I greatly appreciate any help on my FAC. I hope you are having a wonderful new year and are enjoying your return to editing on here. Everyone could use a break from here every now and then. There are two things that draw me to Passions-related articles. I used to watch a lot of the show with my mom when I was younger (it is the only soap opera I have ever watched actually) so nostalgia is definitely one of the primary reasons. The other is that I really enjoy working on articles related to fictional characters and television. It is really cool to see these articles about this show get to GA and FA. Aoba47 (talk) 19:05, 7 January 2017 (UTC)[reply]
Oh yes, I remember watching Greys and Dexter with my mum too. XD Which reminds me I have a couple of Grey's articles that I would like to take to FAC. Let me know if you would be interested in working on them. NumerounovedantTalk 04:39, 8 January 2017 (UTC)[reply]
Sounds awesome! I will definitely try my best to help you with Grey's articles in the FAC process. I might do some more work on Private Practice articles actually, and I always meant to do something with Grey's. You seem much more experienced than I, but I will help as much as I can. Aoba47 (talk) 04:59, 8 January 2017 (UTC)[reply]
I am looking to put this up for a GAR, and take this to FAC in near future. I might put the latter for a PR. NumerounovedantTalk 06:28, 8 January 2017 (UTC)[reply]
@Numerounovedant: Those all sound like good ideas. Just so you know, the bot for the peer review is broken. I looked briefly through both of the articles. For "Sledgehammer", everything looks good, but I would suggest that you revise the "Reception" section. Right now, this section appears to be listing reviews without making a strong narrative from them. I would suggest looking at the following resource here for some pointers on how to correct this section. I would also recommend reading through the "Production" section and copy-edit that as well as there are a few issues. For instance, the last sentence of the section is unsourced, and the last paragraph in particular should be revised for awkward sentence construction. When you do put this up for GAN, I would gladly review it for you. I would also recommend that you look at the "Reception" section for "The Sound of Silence" for the same things I mentioned above. Good luck with these articles. Aoba47 (talk) 17:24, 8 January 2017 (UTC)[reply]
I have instead decided to pursue this for GAR first. If you find some spare time, would you mind taking a look? Thank you. 15:08, 9 January 2017 (UTC)
I will gladly take it on. I have picked it up for a review and will have my comments posted by the end of today or tomorrow. Aoba47 (talk) 15:32, 9 January 2017 (UTC)[reply]
I seem to have hit a creative roadblock here. XD Can you take a look at the article before I put it up for GA again, and see if it's ready? NumerounovedantTalk 15:29, 14 January 2017 (UTC)[reply]
@Numerounovedant: I would remove the image (as it does not add anything to the actual article). You also need to include all of the guest stars in the infobox (you are missing two of the doctors from the Dillard facility). I still think the "Plot" section needs a c/e. I think it will probably be best to have someone new look at this when you put this up for review. Good luck with it. Aoba47 (talk) 00:29, 15 January 2017 (UTC)[reply]
Yes of course, thanks for the help! NumerounovedantTalk 04:39, 15 January 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Your GA nomination of Kazon[edit]

Hi there, I'm pleased to inform you that I've begun reviewing the article Kazon you nominated for GA-status according to the criteria. This process may take up to 7 days. Feel free to contact me with any questions or comments you might have during this period. Message delivered by Legobot, on behalf of J Milburn -- J Milburn (talk) 00:40, 9 January 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Minor Request[edit]

Thanks for the review of "King Worm" (it's one of my fav episodes, too). I have a tiny favor. The other day, an editor reviewed my GAN for "James Baxter the Horse", and while some of their critiques were valid, I found many of them to be based solely on the editor's user preferences, and not on the GA requirements (the review is readable here). Anyway, I put quite a bit of work into the article to fix those issues which I agreed with, and I was wondering if you'd be willing to review it (again). I honestly don't think it should take too long (it's not a huge article, and like I said, I've put a lot of work into making it better). If you are interested, there's absolutely no rush on it. Thanks.--Gen. Quon (Talk) 17:40, 9 January 2017 (UTC)[reply]

  • @Gen. Quon: Thank you for message, and of course, I can review the article. I will mostly likely provide my comments later in the day if that is okay with you. And I agree with your assessment after looking through the previous review (the user did raise some valid points, but the plot section obviously does not need citations and I always caution against the use of screenshots and other non-free material if it is not directly connected to something to the article). I look forward to working on it. Aoba47 (talk) 17:45, 9 January 2017 (UTC)[reply]
Not a problem at all. Thanks for the help!--Gen. Quon (Talk) 17:55, 9 January 2017 (UTC)[reply]
Just a minor follow-up: thanks for the help with the GAs. If you need any help with anything, now or in the future, just let me know.--Gen. Quon (Talk) 14:17, 11 January 2017 (UTC)[reply]
Thank you; I will definitely keep that in mind. Feel free to let me know if you need help with anything now or in the future as well. Aoba47 (talk) 14:20, 11 January 2017 (UTC)[reply]

The WikiCup[edit]

You have submitted two GA reviews for the WikiCup and they are on the borderline between being too short and being acceptable. I will accept them on this occasion because I don't want to discourage you, but in future please be more thorough with your reviews if you want to claim the points in the WikiCup. For example, you could usefully list the GA criteria and indicate that you have assessed the article with regard to each of these. Thank you, Cwmhiraeth (talk) 19:19, 10 January 2017 (UTC)[reply]

@Cwmhiraeth: Thank you for the message. I am not super involved with the WikiCup so I am not that invested in getting points. For both of the GA reviews (for the Adventure Time episodes), I commented on what I believed need revision and that turned out to not be a lot. I have done longer GA reviews in the past when I believe more comments are necessary, but in these two cases, there were relatively few revisions needed to promote them to GA. I am also not a fan of posting the table with the GA criteria as I just find it really clunky and awkward. It is more of a personal preference and I stand by both of those reviews, but thank you again for the message. Aoba47 (talk) 19:26, 10 January 2017 (UTC)[reply]
Actually I see that you have submitted a third review, and it is perfectly satisfactory. Cheers. Cwmhiraeth (talk) 19:29, 10 January 2017 (UTC)[reply]
@Cwmhiraeth: Thank you for the message, and I hope you are having a wonderful new year. I will definitely keep this in mind when conducting future GA reviews. Aoba47 (talk) 19:31, 10 January 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Hello, Aoba47. I plan to take this to FA. Do let me know if you wish to leave comments at the PR page by pinging me. Thanks.  — Ssven2 Looking at you, kid 10:27, 11 January 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Thank you for your message. I will leave some comments by the end of today if that is okay with you. Aoba47 (talk) 14:20, 11 January 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Anytime! Aoba47 (talk) 21:10, 11 January 2017 (UTC)[reply]

DYK for Gagged (EP)[edit]

On 15 January 2017, Did you know was updated with a fact from the article Gagged (EP), which you recently created, substantially expanded, or brought to good article status. The fact was ... that drag queen Violet Chachki's EP Gagged was inspired by her time working as an assistant to a dominatrix? The nomination discussion and review may be seen at Template:Did you know nominations/Gagged (EP). You are welcome to check how many page hits the article got while on the front page (here's how, Gagged (EP)), and it may be added to the statistics page if the total is over 5,000. Finally, if you know of an interesting fact from another recently created article, then please feel free to suggest it on the Did you know talk page.

Re: Sadie Harris[edit]

Hi, I just saw your message on my talk page and I wanted to thank you for the kind words. I am honored that my work has inspired you, and after having looked at your user page, I am thoroughly impressed with the work you have accomplished. Although I am long retired from Wikipedia, I greatly appreciate the memories I made on this site, and I wish you the best of luck as you continue to contribute. If you ever need any advice, don't hesitate to reach out to me. Maybe one day when I'm done with my fellowship, I'll come back and finally fulfill my ultimate goal of promoting Grey's Anatomy to FA.

The Signpost: 17 January 2017[edit]

Hello Aoba47,

Why did you change all of the content from a GA article to a redirect? -- 1989 (talk) 14:57, 21 January 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks![edit]

Hi there! I just wanted to quickly thank you for the Barnstar you gave me for my Clair Huxtable article; your kind words mean a lot to me! It's funny that you say my work inspires you to better yourself, which is great to hear and all, but in reality your work does the same for me! I constantly find myself visiting your profile to reference the list of fictional characters you've promoted to GA to see if I'm heading on the right track, especially when I'm working on television characters.

Keep up the good work, and maybe we can collaborate on something in the near future. Cheers! <3--Changedforbetter (talk) 06:36, 22 January 2017 (UTC)[reply]

  • @Changedforbetter: Thank you for your kind words! We can keep each other motivated during our work on here. I would definitely love to collaborate with you on something in the future. You keep up the great work as well! Best! <3 Aoba47 (talk) 16:24, 22 January 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Question[edit]

Why do you recommend to add alt text to an image when there is a caption at the bottom? -- 1989 (talk) 00:42, 25 January 2017 (UTC)[reply]

  • @1989: An ALT description and a caption are two completely different things. See Wikipedia:Alternative text for images. An ALT description/ALT text is required for every image used in an article, and is used to help those who either turn off images in their web browser or use a screen reader due to a visual impairment. It was created to make sure that every page could be accessed and understood by all readers. ALT description are required for images in the infobox and outside of the infobox. You can always add an ALT description that says "refer to caption" if you believe that caption is describing what is in the picture. However, in the case of Naruto, I would suggest an ALT description saying exactly what it is in the image, as the caption by itself does not explain what is in the image. I would highly encourage you to research this on your own, especially if you plan on taking articles and lists to FLC and FAC. Aoba47 (talk) 00:48, 25 January 2017 (UTC)[reply]

January 2017[edit]

Hello, I'm Jim1138. Your recent edit to Drowned World/Substitute for Love appears to have added incorrect information, so I removed it for now. If you believe the information was correct, please cite a reliable source or discuss your change on the article's talk page. If you think I made a mistake, or if you have any questions, you can leave me a message on my talk page. Thanks. Jim1138 (talk) 07:37, 26 January 2017 (UTC)[reply]

  • @Jim1138: I am not sure what you are talking about; next time, it would be more beneficial to identify which of my edits you disagree with as I have no idea of what you are referencing through this message. Aoba47 (talk) 14:05, 26 January 2017 (UTC)[reply]
My apology on this. You had added a GA to Drowned World/Substitute for Love and an IP had subsequently made a few experiments on it. Another editor with a similar username had been causing trouble and I think I confused you two. An edit summary on your GA addition would have helped. Again, my apology on this. Cheers Jim1138 (talk) 19:17, 26 January 2017 (UTC)[reply]
@Jim1138: No worries, I will make sure to be better about using edit summary in the future. Have a wonderful rest of your day. Aoba47 (talk) 19:18, 26 January 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Your GA nomination of Kazon[edit]

Nooo![edit]

Hey Aoba47! Just lurking around and was glancing at your sandboxes... Anyway, I noticed you were toying with working on the Eve article and got so excited! But you deleted it! I'm just messing with you, I'm not too disappointed ;) but was wondering what your change of heart was. Have a great week, Carbrera (talk) 02:37, 1 February 2017 (UTC).[reply]

@Carbrera: Thank you for your message. It is actually really cool to have someone lurking through my sandbox so that made my day lol. Over the past few days, I have actually been experimenting in my sandboxes to come up with a couple of new project ideas. I was interested in doing work on Eve in a similar fashion to what I have done with Love, Inc.. However, I think it is best for me to take a small break/pause from brand new Wikipedia projects to focus on some out-of-Wikipedia work. I have greatly enjoyed my time working on here and interacting with the community of great contributors (such as yourself :-) ), but I am getting a little overwhelmed with life right now. I was honestly surprised that I could make it through my last project for the Kazon page lol. But don't worry, I will definitely be working on Eve sometime in the future and I will be updating my sandbox page to show my next three new projects that I will get to sometime in the future. For now, I think I will limit myself to just trying to get some my GAs through the FAC process (I am honestly surprised and very grateful to already have a few FAs). Thank you again for your kind words and have a wonderful day! I look forward to seeing your future work as well! Aoba47 (talk) 03:14, 1 February 2017 (UTC)[reply]
@Carbrera: For my next three projects, I am planning on doing three different UPN shows (a sitcom, a sci-fi medical drama, and a horror drama). I forgot about the diversity that UPN put into its programming and I am actually really looking forward to doing those when I have the time/and I am more relaxed from my temporary new project/Wikibreak lol. Aoba47 (talk) 03:47, 1 February 2017 (UTC)[reply]
Just an FYI, for your Eve sandbox, I'd be willing to help if you need any. I went to a Gwen Stefani concert this past August and was able to get several pictures of Eve (she was the opening act). Let me know if you would like or need any of them :) Carbrera (talk) 03:54, 1 February 2017 (UTC).[reply]
Awesome! Thank you, and I will let you know if I need any help. I hope that you enjoyed the concert! Aoba47 (talk) 03:57, 1 February 2017 (UTC)[reply]
@Aoba47: To say I enjoyed it would be an understatement. Some of my pics are on Make Me Like You, Misery (Gwen Stefani song), Go Ahead and Break My Heart, Asking 4 It, and Harajuku Girls (song) lol. You should've gone to the concert! Carbrera (talk) 04:02, 1 February 2017 (UTC).[reply]
I bet and those are some really awesome pictures! I bet it was a lot of fun. Aoba47 (talk) 14:15, 1 February 2017 (UTC)[reply]

@Carbrera: Hello again. Just wanted to let you know that I started a little bit of work in my sandbox on Eve. I have not got much done so far and I will probably be working on it rather slowly in comparison to my other projects. I do not think that I will need your pictures, but thank you for the offer. Hope you are doing well. Aoba47 (talk) 02:23, 5 February 2017 (UTC)[reply]

@Carbrera: Sorry for the constant pings. Just wanted to let you know that I have expanded the article and put it up for GAN. I believe that it is up to the level of a GA, but it will need a lot of work before I even consider putting it up for FAC. Just wanted to let you know about this. Hope your day is going well. Aoba47 (talk) 17:35, 5 February 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Congrats! (re: Love, Inc.)[edit]

Congrats on the fantastic article and Main Page appearance. Based on the above conversation, I hope you'll continue contributing to Wikipedia when you have the time and interest. Don't let Wikipedia become a job or nuisance! :) ---Another Believer (Talk) 17:23, 1 February 2017 (UTC)[reply]

@Another Believer: Thank you for your kind words! I still greatly enjoy contributing to Wikipedia and interacting with the community. I feel like I have learned a lot since first joining. Just taking a break from new projects as I have done quite a few over the past year, but I will definitely returning to doing more in the future. Hope you are having a wonderful day! Can I interest you[edit]

...in this? It has not received much of attention. – FrB.TG (talk) 17:09, 15 February 2017 (UTC)[reply]

  • @FrB.TG: I will look through it by the end of the week if that is okay with you. If possible could you look at my FLC in return? Aoba47 (talk) 17:15, 15 February 2017 (UTC)[reply]

DYK for I Made It (Fantasia song)[edit]

On 17 February 2017, Did you know was updated with a fact from the article I Made It (Fantasia song), which you recently created, substantially expanded, or brought to good article status. The fact was ... that Fantasia's song "I Made It" was described as sounding like a finale for the musical The Color Purple? The nomination discussion and review may be seen at Template:Did you know nominations/I Made It (Fantasia song). You are welcome to check how many page hits the article got while on the front page (here's how, I Made It (Fantasia song)), and it may be added to the statistics page if the total is over 5,000. Finally, if you know of an interesting fact from another recently created article, then please feel free to suggest it on the Did you know talk page.

Care to take a look?[edit]

Hey Aoba47, just a quick question to ask of you. Would you mind taking a look at Speed Buggy and giving me your thoughts. It was one of my favorite cartoons that reran when I was growing up! I entirely rewrote it, basing it off of your work on both Love, Inc. and Eve ;). I will be taking a look at your FAC very soon as well. Regards, Carbrera (talk) 06:20, 21 February 2017 (UTC).[reply]

It just came to me that this may come across as me asking you to perform the GA review, but this is not the case. Just thought I'd bring this up before you or someone else did. ;) Thanks, Carbrera (talk) 06:21, 21 February 2017 (UTC).[reply]

References[edit]

Hey Aoba, I'm glad to see you're still doing great work on Wikipedia. I just wanted to ask you something regarding references. I've seen that many of the articles you've worked on have citations that are very old, even like a decade old, that you've taken from Wayback Machine. What I wonder is, how do you find these sources? I'm asking cause there's a cartoon called A.T.O.M. (2006) whose page I'd like to improve but I have no idea how to do it. I've tried WBM's search engine but didn't really come up with anything. PanagiotisZois (talk) 23:20, 24 February 2017 (UTC)[reply]

  • @PanagiotisZois: Thank you for your kind words and for your message. I typically just use Google for everything (I use the standard Google search as well as Google News and Google Books). I don't really do anything fancier than that (I wish that I had a more sophisticated answer than this). Also, if I already know the url for a website, then I go digging through Wayback Machine. For instance, when developing some of the pages for the Russell family (Passions), I already knew the url for the show's website and thankfully, multiple time periods of the site were saved on Wayback Machine. A lot of it is unfortunately luck when dealing with older sources as I was just lucky that some of the sources I needed were either still up and available through a Google search or were already archived on Wayback Machine. You can also use this archive machine as an alternative to Wayback Machine here as it may have some more sites. I hope this helps in some way. Good luck with your projects! I have looked through your sandbox and you are doing some cool stuff (the Avi Dar one sounds really cool). Aoba47 (talk) 23:44, 24 February 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Eve (2003 TV series)[edit]

The copy edit that you requested from the Guild of Copy Editors of the article Eve (2003 TV series) has been completed.

Good luck with the FA when you get to it.

Testing[edit]

Greetings. Few hours ago I nominated D.Gray-man to FA and tried pinging all the users from the peer review. However, in that same peer review, a user told the ping function didn't work so I wanted to make sure if it worked at least with someone. Anyways, while I would like to see your comments, I know you are also busy with other works in Wikipedia. Good luck.Tintor2 (talk) 00:40, 28 February 2017 (UTC)[reply]

  • @Tintor2: Thank you for your message. I did get your ping message so I apologize for not responding sooner. I will respond to your FAC by the end of tomorrow if that is okay. Thank you for all of your help with my past FACs and FLCs. Good luck with this one. Aoba47 (talk) 00:57, 28 February 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Helpful link[edit]

I just wanted to let you know that in case you ever want to improve an article and nominate it for GA/FA this specific site right here can be very helpful in finding any dead sources the page might have. It's a lot less time consuming than having to check every single source individually. Also, ironically, the page I checked is "List of Eve episodes" and apparently one of the sources is dead. PanagiotisZois (talk) 16:16, 28 February 2017 (UTC)[reply]

  • @PanagiotisZois: Thank you for your comment. I am actually already very familiar with that site as it is a part of the toolbox with every FAC and FLC (and possibly GAN too, but I cannot remember at the moment). I always use that when reviewing articles and lists as it is very helpful. That page is still active, but for some reason, the archiveurl was acting up and not working properly. I always make sure not to archive all of my sources even if they are still active to avoid link decay/rot. I have fixed that link so thank you for drawing it to my attention. I hope you are having an excellent day so far! Aoba47 (talk) 16:40, 28 February 2017 (UTC)[reply]
