Question

Hi Arknascar44, i saw your username at Wikipedia:Changing_username/Assistance and just wanted to ask about usurpations. I wanted to change my account to user:Noor Aalam, so i created the account and made two edits(moving my user and tk pg). Would it still be possible to change my user name to Noor Aalam and keep my edit history? I asked here and the answer was no because i already had edits, but at this page it states that even if the target name has edits an usurpation can be done. I just wanted to confirm if this can be done. Thanks, IP198 22:13, 24 October 2007 (UTC)

Hey IP198! If you want to usurp a username that you've already created, you need to confirm that it is undeniably your account. The best way to do this is to (1) make the request at WP:CHU/U and then (2) sign in as the account you want to usurp and, in your request, say something like "Yes, this is me ~~~~". Hope that helps, ( arky ) 23:23, 24 October 2007 (UTC)
Thanks, thats perfect. IP198 00:11, 25 October 2007 (UTC)

Disputed fair use rationale for Image:Bonesofmoon.jpg

Thanks for uploading Image:Bonesofmoon.jpg. However, there is a concern that the rationale you have provided for using this image under "fair use" may be invalid. Please read the instructions at Wikipedia:Non-free content carefully, then go to the image description page and clarify why you think the image qualifies for fair use. Using one of the templates at Wikipedia:Fair use rationale guideline is an easy way to ensure that your image is in compliance with Wikipedia policy, but remember that you must complete the template. Do not simply insert a blank template on an image page.

If it is determined that the image does not qualify under fair use, it will be deleted within a couple of days according to our criteria for speedy deletion. If you have any questions please ask them at the media copyright questions page. Thank you.BetacommandBot 04:56, 27 October 2007 (UTC)

Image problems

Hi arky, I don´t know what happened but the image that I upload to toluca page (tec explanada) has been deleted. I think because it has the same name in wikimedia commons or something like that.

So, what can I do?

Nathaly07 21:55, 1 November 2007 (UTC)

Don't worry, Nathaly :) The image will still work perfectly well if it is on Wikimedia Commons. All that it means is that the image can now be used on any language Wikipedia, so it would be silly to have it here if we could use it here anyway. Hope that makes sense, and happy editing, ( arky ) 22:02, 1 November 2007 (UTC)

Done With Curriculum

Hi Arky, i read over my curriculum and am proficient with it. Can you please give me new material? ThanksEnglish836 01:10, 8 November 2007 (UTC)

Okay, I'll give you lesson number two tomorrow :) ( arky ) 01:29, 8 November 2007 (UTC)

Thanks for joining, the project is very new, please look around the Project page and the talk page for things you can do or add some ideas of your own to the list. I noticed you mentioned "infoboxes", we'd love to see some ideas in this area, but please talk to us before you do anything significant, there is a infobox out there that pre-dates the project and is getting longer by the day, consensus changes as we add members obviously but discussion has been fairly negative towards at least that infobox {{farming}}/{{Agriculture}}. We are desperately in need of work on a breed taxobox design, we are also considering our relationship to other projects, particularly the three currently extent and one proposed for horses (lots of discussion on our talk page), and we're still working on defining our scope and what we consider the articles of top importance to our project. Also, for some reason a lot of Ag sites seem prone to vandalism more than maybe some other areas, so it's always helpful if you add a bunch of pages to your watch list and patrol them for vandals. Thanks and once more, Welcome!--Doug.(talk contribs) 03:50, 29 October 2007 (UTC)

If by "infobox" you meant breed boxes (I just noticed our Project page lists the requirement under "infoboxes"), I will have to have an extra special barnstar (somehow it seems farmers have to have the best barnstars) commissioned. I don't do barnstars and I don't see any here either, but there are always exceptions.:) --Doug.(talk contribs) 04:03, 29 October 2007 (UTC)
Are you still interested in (or maybe even quietly working on) the breedboxes/breed infoboxes, or whatever we're calling them? I'm trying to marshal a group to work that project if we can.--Doug.(talk contribs) 03:34, 9 November 2007 (UTC)
If so, please see Wikipedia_talk:WikiProject Agriculture/Infobox.--Doug.(talk contribs) 03:35, 9 November 2007 (UTC)

Caringness to vandals

I'm suprised by this, I've never seen someone talk to a vandal about vandalism before. If everyone talked to vandals like that, there would probably be no vandals.--Sunny910910 (talk|Contributions) 02:32, 9 November 2007 (UTC)

I'm not certain what you were trying to do with {{Family Guy character}}, but I don't think it worked, so I reverted it. I have a sandboxed copy of that template if you want to experiment.

COI

Hi, a few days ago you wrote a reply on the help desk suggesting that it was forbidden for people to edit articles about themselves. The thing is that WP:COI doesn't actually forbid editing of articles where you might have a conflict of interest. "Editors who may have a conflict of interest are not barred from participating in articles and discussion of articles where they have a conflict of interest, but must be careful when editing in mainspace." Best wishes/ Pax:Vobiscum (talk) 03:02, 21 November 2007 (UTC)

Yeah, I suppose "forbidden" was a bit strong, but I was going by Wikipedia:Conflict of interest#How to avoid COI edits (number 1). It was definitely an exaggerated choice of words, though :) ( arky ) 03:07, 21 November 2007 (UTC)

WikiProject report

Two things:

  1. Someone noted that the report has become somewhat formulaic. If you could do something like an interview with the WikiProject coordinator, or someone major within the project, that'd be a good idea.
  2. One project you might consider covering sometime in the future is the LGBT studies project. I don't follow WikiProjects that closely, but I know that they've received some media attention, so they might be a good one to cover. Ral315 » 07:23, 27 November 2007 (UTC)

Your questions.

Hello. :)

  1. Q: What is the best way for users unfamiliar with LGBT topics or new to Wikipedia to get involved in the project?
A: Add oneself as a member to our list and the welcome message will provide a number of ideas for someone who would like to get involved but doesn't know where to start. We also have a special section on our main page, Tasks you can do to further help newbies. The Project talkpage has a constant stream of requests for help and assistance - responding to them is a quick and useful way of making your presence known to the rest of the group. We do have an habit of nominating hehlpful members for adminship, so working with us is a good move for one's Wikipedia career generally.
  1. Q: What are some of the departments in the project?
    A: From the Press kit:
Generally, editors on Wikipedia just edit whatever articles they want within their sphere of interest, and come to WikiProject LGBT studies when they need help or wish to collaborate with other editors. To support our members and improve our coverage, we have several “departments”:
Assessment: Measures our progress in improving articles.
Collaboration: An article is chosen, currently once a month, for the entire

WikiProject to improve. Community: Produces a monthly newsletter which keeps everyone up to date, recruits new members and hosts our publicity materials. We also have a “quilt” in which any member can add a patch, containing quotes, images, or whatever they desire.

Jumpaclass: A original department of WP:LGBT which has since been copied by

others, Jumpaclass is a semi-competition where editors can nominate articles and be awarded points on how much they can improve them in seven days. There is also a direct head to head option to encourage friendly competition.

Translation: An effort to end our bias against foreign LGBT articles, the translation

department is an attempt to improve our cross-wiki communication. The department can currently cover over ten languages, including French, German, Swedish and Welsh.

Peer review: Possibly our greatest asset to Wikipedia, the peer review system

exposes articles to closer scrutiny from a broader group of editors, and is intended for high-quality articles that have already undergone extensive work. It helps editors spot what they need to work on.

  1. Q: Are there any ongoing discussions pertaining to project issues or articles in the project's scope?
A: There is, as within the LGBT community generally, a perennial discussion over whether "Queer" should be added to our name, to support those who do not identify as LGBT. Recent debate has focussed on whether the intersex articles should added to our remit. Much of our work also, sadly, has to focus on countering editors who refuse to add (referenced) LGBT-related material to BLPs - a typical example is the vast amount of resources consumed by James I of England, who was well known to have had affections for other men but whose article has been strictly limited to the barest details. Quite a few of the "Sexuality of..." articles have come about not because of excessive information but because editors have refused to put anything in the main article itself. Oh, and you can imagine what it was like when Albus Dumbledore got outed... Discussion related to this issue takes up a lot of our time.
  1. Q: What are some of the features of the project's website?
A:We have a chat room on it (but which has now been superceded by the IRC channel) and use it for storing copyrighted materials related to the project - mostly promotional posters. We do actually have an email address as well, wplgbt@gmail.com, but I have yet to think of a use for it!
  1. Q: What are of of the project's most recent achievements?
A: November saw our anniversary of one year since we really got started as a project. We have created a number of FAs, such as But I'm a Cheerleader, with a few more going through now. Several of us, notably SatyrTN, have been working on a full, accurate list of Gay, lesbian and bisexual people - many of the lists that already exist are either unreferenced or hopelessly wishful thinking (George Clooney, for example, is regularly claimed to be gay). We have currently got got six Featured Lists out of it and a seventh is currently nominated. We were also featured in SXNews, an Australian gay newspaper, for our work. At the moment we're considering how we can make the project even more active after the winter slump, so we can be ready to make our articles even better next year.

I think that covers it all, though I don't know what the hell happened to the formnatting. There is also a Press kit I put together many moons ago if you would like more information. If you ever want to do an in-depth interview drop me a line. :) Yours, Dev920 (Have a nice day!) 23:21, 2 December 2007 (UTC)

Question

Hi, I'm not that familiar with the Signpost, but I noticed that you've written some of the WikiProject Reports, and I was wondering if there was a place that I could suggest a project for that. Thanks, Scorpion0422 01:32, 5 December 2007 (UTC)

Right here on this talkpage would be perfect :) ( arky ) 16:31, 8 December 2007 (UTC)
Well, there are two that might be interesting. There's WP:SIMPSONS which has been quite successful in 2007 (we had 7 FAs, 9 FLs and 70 GAs promoted in 2007 alone), and WP:PW which I am also a part of (but not very active in) and it is one of the most active projects out there. The talk page literally gets 10 new topics per day, which is very good for a wikiproject. -- Scorpion0422 23:13, 8 December 2007 (UTC)
Awesome! I'll add them to the "queue", as I've gotten a good amount of requests this week already. Cheers, and happy editing, ( arky ) 01:12, 9 December 2007 (UTC)

Project questions and answers

1.What is the best way for users unfamiliar with Greater Manchester-related topics, new to Wikipedia, or just interested to get involved in the project?
A: Well, there are quite a few ways in which any unsuspecting member of Wikipedia can get involved with our works. Our project talk page, has become very active in the past few months, and we are always striving hard to help other users who may have issues or who are just in need of advice on what article they may be editing. It's also a few months since we introduced the welcome templates, just as any other WikiProject's, they work by recognising a users abilities to add content to articles, whilst also keeping key Wiki-policies in mind. Unusually, we use two messages for welcoming users, one as sign that we know they are editing to articles which may be related to Greater Manchester, and then one after once they may or may not have registered.

2. What do you think about the progress the project has made during its time on Wikipedia?
A: Since the opening editor, Pit-yacker- set up the project, we've now collectively understood that there are at least 820 pages relating to Greater Manchester, (which ideally we'd love to get all to FA standard), there are now 9 featured articles (most in the last month or so), 11 good articles and at least 75 B-class articles, the whole list is viewable here. Several of the editors, including Jza84, Malleus Fatuarum, And-Rew and WebHamster, have all been dedicated to the cause of the project and have collaborated together to build the effects we see today. An example of the work done by the project is, Manchester. Once a small article (before the founding of the project), but with months of work by many of the editors and some others, it's now featured with over 105 kilobytes of information. It gained unanimous support at it's FAC back in November and every issue that was set by some editors, was swiftly corrected. The GA reviewer, Pursey, even commented on the swiftness and dedication of all involved, and was so impressed gave a barnstar to every user that was involved.

3. Are there any ongoing discussions pertaining to project issues or articles in the project's scope?
A: Hmm…well there are two articles which are undergoing extensive scrutiny at the Project talk page, namely Altrincham and Pendlebury, which are receiving quite a bit of "editor reviewing" and good feedback from other users in the project. There are also quite a few cases where some users are using sandboxes or the {{Underconstruction}} template on pages which are receiving, mostly, exclusive edits by the users who instigate the notice. Apart from that, WP:GM is coming along quite nicely.

4. What is the advantage of having the project's newsletter?
A: The newsletter, which was set up in October (about the time as most other project’s newsletters founding) is a great way of bringing together the project’s members. I set it up to create an outreach to some of the users which may be not up to full editing activity and to inform some other users who may be active, but not necessarily involved with the project (or at least up to one post every two weeks) to inform them of project developments, and to maybe even trigger a, what I’d like to call, "SAD – sole article dedication". The acronym not pertaining to the emotion, obviously. :)

5.What are some of the project's most recent successes?
A: As with the response to Question 2, the project has come along way since it’s foundation and has become recognised by some outside editors as a great way of helping Greater Manchester related articles upto scratch. The example of Manchester previously, is only a small part of what’s been happening. 9 featured articles, 5 of which have been passed in the last month, in itself shows the large and wide-spread activity which has occurred. From motorways (freeways) to metropolitan boroughs (districts) we’re working on them all. And the relative portal, Portal:North West England, also recently became featured.

From — Rudget speak.work 17:18, 11 December 2007 (UTC). Hope it helps! :)

Thanks for the response! You've made the news! :) Cheers, ( arky ) 02:33, 12 December 2007 (UTC)
Thank you! I appreciate your willigness to actually want to hear what I had to say. I never thought anyone would want to hear about WP:GM, but I guess I probably generalised too much.
