Not saying it's a legal contract, but it's a content issue whether a player (or agent or owner) announcement is verifiable enough for this page. Anonymous reports are less reliable and I'm more quick to protect in those cases. Cheers.—Bagumba (talk) 18:26, 11 July 2014 (UTC)

Unfortunately, there aren't enough editors active in WP:NBA with a common set of values to patrol/enforce this. LeBron James mess is prime example. No doubt! It's frustrating that even once you inform users (new or old) about the difference between agreed and signed, they don't take any notice. Hey, Bagumba. This guy may need a time-out. He's been repeatedly warned to stop messing with the formatting of NBA infoboxes (see here), including capitalization, etc., on his talk page and in edit summaries reverting his changes. @Dirtlawyer1:Another editor has left a final waring for edit warring on Prosportsexpert's talk page. Hopefully there will be improvement; feel free to follow up at WP:AN3 or WP:ANI or with me as needed. BTW, anyone can leave warnings on another's page. In this case someone else left it already, but it always expedites things if users self-patrolled and issues appropriate warnings on their own, and bring in admins to block as a last resort. I usually leave a more personal message (rather than a templated warning), with a brief explanation of what I perceive to be the problem, and asking the evil-doer for his cooperation. @Dirtlawyer1: I've tried many times with this guy! I've reverted him many times, and he still persists on capitalising player positions. I don't think he's going to stop no matter what you do. I saw you in the couple conversations in LeBron and the associated talk page, not sure if you said anything on my RfP last week when I asked for temporary full but it was protected due to edit warring over the intent without contract where I had added Pending Contract so people would at least be ok with that. However it seems you've been dealing with this number "decision" now that he's officially on the team. I wouldn't see that as a conflict, since you're also keeping on top of this subject that might give it the quickest turn around time. It's always about being the best live encyclopedia, no conflict by you locking due to edit warring. Protection?

There has been a lot of recent activity by newly-created accounts changing her nationality in the infobox from "American" to "Native American" (or similar). Does this qualify for page protection? I get the pride aspect, but the field is what it is. Just not sure how to proceed and don't want to edit war over it. Rikster2 (talk) 18:44, 20 July 2014 (UTC)

I'm a little unclear about your "clear consensus" comment. I think there is quite clear consensus that the nationality field is for citizenship. That's been the norm for indigenous Australians, Croat/Serb, "Filipino American" (like Jordan Clarkson recently), etc. why would this be any different? The last user has again changed the field, so in the interest of 3R I am done with it, at least for now. That's the unfortunate thing about WP these days, one is at a real disadvantage when one plays by the rules. These new users don't care about consensus, WP guidelines or anything else. They just care about jack hammering their one change or set of changes until they get banned. Rikster2 (talk) 21:16, 20 July 2014 (UTC)
"clear consensus": it was a generic response prior to knowing the exact article and situation. That said, any article can apply an exception to any practice per WP:IAR. It's up to editors how they decide to present content, but most of the time editors will follow guidelines used in other articles. I'm not sure if there is a technicality of Natives considering their land a nation, so I'm hesitant to be more aggressive as with Clarkson, where there was no proof he had Filipino citizenship. I'm also suspicious of possible WP:SOCKs here, but you should wait to see how the discussion goes. If there ends up being silent consensus after a day or two, I think you can cite the discussion in your edit summary and be free of 3RR. You might also want to notify relevant projects for more input. I'm not going to get involved in the discussion for now, so feel free to let me know if future admin action is needed here.—Bagumba (talk) 23:16, 20 July 2014 (UTC)

Thanks for discussing this. Reiterating my earlier message on your talk page, this is premature information about something that may happen, not something that has verifiably taken place. Note the source says "... will sign a two-year deal ..." i.e. it has not happened. Per Wikipedia:WikiProject Sports/Handling sports transactions, transactions are typically not updated on Wikipedia until they have occurred, usually confirmed by an official statement or press release. With Rashard Lewis' contract having just been voided by the Mavericks [3], what happens with the transaction page in terms of his initial signing on July 19? 1. Does nothing happen? 2. Does it stay there and instead add him to the waived list (although this says "He doesn’t need to pass through waivers.")? or 3. FWIW, it's not listed at http://stats.nba.com/transactions.html?ls=iref:nba:gnav (assuming it was before). I guess it's like an annulment i.e. it doesn't count as ever happening. I'd say remove it. Basketball biogs

Hi, what is it about biogs of basketball players that means that many of them need BLP ptotection? Of all the articles the end up in Category:Wikipedia pages with incorrect protection templates, I find basketball biogs more often than any other kind of person. --Redrose64 (talk) 15:55, 30 July 2014 (UTC)

Infobox basketball biography - coaches and WNBA

Hey - I know the WNBA infobox is suppoed to convert to the standard Infobox:basketball biography but that a few modifications may need to occur (such as documenting WNBA vs. non-NBA teams since the WNBA is a summer season). I have also been converting a few college coaches to the box and, while I think the basketball biography infobox captures a lot of playing career info lost in Infobox:college coach (an issue with guys with significant playing careers like Johnny Dawkins, Danny Manning, etc), it does not enable display of coaching records - which is a big flaw (would be good for NBA coaches too I suppose). Additionally, I'd still like to look into adding academic class to the infobox for use with college players. Do you know of a good resource to prototype all of these requirements at once? User:Frietjes has done some of the changes in the past, but last time I went to her she was so overloaded with requests that it took quite awhile - it might be nice to get another experienced coder to help. Do you know of anyone or is there a way to request a resource via WP? If we can get these changes done, I will convert infoboxes to suport it, but I'm not capable of doing the coding.   • You may want to talk to Technical13. He's a little eccentric, but he seems to have a grip on template coding; sound him out, see what you think. FWIW, I've been using the common basketball biography infobox for WNBA players, and the only fix I noted was that the draft parameter needs to be toggled for WNBA vs. NBA draft; everything else seemed to function just fine. Before merging, can we have a discussion at somewhere like WT:BASKETBALL on specific requirement first. Pacers

Hello, I just wanted your opinion on something. A few users have changed Solomon Hill's and Damjan Rudez's infoboxes to state different numbers and said Hill's and the Pacers' twitter, along with the team store have stated it. I feel that it should correspond to the Pacers roster or the players' player files on nba.com . What do you think? (I see you are on vacation so enjoy the days off and respond at your leisure.) I think people should just wait until the season starts :-) Realistically, people have their own way to handle conflicting sources. When there is a disagreement, follow dispute resolution. I'm new here (A month)and I'm having a hard time uploading pictures since there are a lot of requirements to be done. Shabazz Napier

Would you consider semi-protecting Shabazz Napier? An IP is constantly re-adding this ridiculous stats table to the article which was previously added many times before by these two users that were blocked recently because of sock puppetry and I think this IP and this new user is the same person again. Disruptive editor

Bagumba, thanks so much for blocking 68.225.150.26. He was constantly violating WP:CRYSTAL and seems to be Zoran Dragic's personal PR guy. per WP:DUCK, can you also block User:AGreatPhoenixSunsFan? He tried to add Dragic to 2011 NBA draft as a notable undrafted player ([6]) despite that section explicitly stating "These players were not selected in the 2011 NBA draft but have played at least one game in the NBA." Also - I just happened to look over his talk page history. Look at how many times he's been told the rules to adding players to all-time rosters and to categories! Not to mention other CRYSTAL-related editing. At a certain point, competence is required to edit Wikipedia, and this person (IMO) is not showing it. Please, don't take my words out of context, the 200 dpi argument was a reply to your accusation of one of my previous arguments. Second, from what I read in given discussion, there really wasn't built a universal "rule" on this issue, there were just suggestions, with no clear consensus. So, the statement "(we) typically use the most recent photo" falls in the water. I won't be pursuing this, this whole discussion with you was just a matter of validity of your actions... in order to set some unwritten standards for such matter in the future. Dashes for two consecutive years

Where in English usage does it say that two consecutive years should be bridged with an endash? Typically that is 3+ years to show a range and two years is a comma. What is the basis for the existing convention for infobox basketball biography? Rikster2 (talk) 02:02, 9 October 2014 (UTC)

The discussion for using an en dash for consecutive years in the infoxbox (no distinction for 3 or more years) was in 2011 at Template_talk:Infobox_basketball_biography#Consecutive_awards_should_be_listed_with_a_dash_.28for_example:_2001.E2.80.932003.2C_2005.29_rather_than_listing_each_year_they_occurred_.28for_example:_2001.2C_2002.2C_2003.2C_2005.29. I looked back at a 2009 version of "List of NBA All-Stars" and it used dashes for any consecutive year range e.g. Clyde Drexler, David Robinson, etc. It seems to be the convention in most (all?) Right, but I'm not taking about Wikipedia convention, I'm talking about real-world usage. The endash is there to show a range and remove the need to list out interim information ("1986-1993" instead of "1986, 1987, 1988, 1989, 1990, 1991, 1992, 1993"). With a two year repeat, there is no interim information that the endash would replace. Is there a style guide that mandates our current usage? I ask because I don't think it is correct. Not sure about other style guides. For that matter, not sure if any style guide explicitly prohibits it, WP:MOS included. At this point, it's already the convention in the bulk of WP:NBA articles, and seems like the convention is generally understandable to readers, not just a few Wikipedia editors or long-time WP readers.—Bagumba (talk) 04:30, 9 October 2014 (UTC)
  • And the answer is . . . WP:DATERANGE. FYI, a number of sports editors, including myself, GiantSnowman and Rikster, participated in the crafting of the current language of this MOS provision. In fact, Bagumba drafted the current exception to this rule that permits eight-digit year ranges for sports infoboxes. Short memories, guys.

Oh, and there is no MOS policy for how we list championship years or years of awards and honors in infobox parentheticals. The existing sports convention appears to be that we maintain separately listed years (with commas) for individual awards, but we use year spans (with ndashes) for team tenures. The question is not WP:DATERANGE, per se, but whether the defacto practice of using endash for recurring annual events e.g. awards, should instead be listed with a comma while limiting en dash to spans of three of more years. Outside of the carve-out for sports infoboxes the two of you fought for, the standard MOS year-span format is supposed to be YYYY-YY. The present discussion is being driven by the computer geeks' desire to sanction all ISO date formats, including YYYY-MM, which conflicts with YYYY-YY year spans. Reverting an incorrect category move

Someone apparently speedily moved Category:Tulsa 66ers players to Category:Oklahoma City Blue players, which is obviously incorrect because none of those players have ever played a game for "Oklahoma City Blues" name, plus it is the long established naming convention to keep historical names for which a player has participated. I can't tell who nominated it for speedy renaming but nobody caught it at CfR to object. As an admin, can you revert this move and get all of these players back into the Tulsa 66ers players category? Unfortunately, there is no easy way to restore this, even as an admin. As it was done by a bot, the simplest way seems to be to get a bot to reverse it. The charges were done by User:Cydebot, which is operated by admin User:Cyde. I would recommend you contact the admin to get a background on the rationale for the speedy move vs a discussion, and if the bot can reverse the changes.—Bagumba (talk) 19:53, 19 October 2014 (UTC)

Then it will fit on one line and it is saying the same thing as 'Consensus national college player of the year'. The award is an NCAA award; it's a given that it is college.
