I wish you would reconsider. My credentials include full licensure to practice medicine and surgery in the United States (New York) where D.O.'s (doctors of osteopathic medicine) are granted full medical privileges, unlike in other countries. I am now retired and enjoy reporting on developments in medical research. My statistical records on your recent two visits to my website may be in error but they show that the amount of time you spent on the website was less than a second. How are you able to form a judgement like this so quickly? The articles I summarized (from respected scientific journals) discussed relevant, important, and signficant research in the field of obesity and it is a bit of a shame that people who visit Wikipedia now have a reduced access to this important, authoritative, and essential research.Belleriviere 14:40, 3 September 2006 (UTC)

Obese article is often abused

As I'm sure you understand, obesity is a complex and sensitive issue. As a doctor, you are probably aware that there is a lot of quackery associated with obesity. Please forgive the wikipedia for an abrupt and harsh lack of acceptance of your website, but the author removing your link meant well.

It may be that your site is relevant and useful, however wikipedia is often subject to people adding links to sites for reasons other than trying to make the article better. The following 3 comments were added to the text just this week.:

... for just 3 examples. Vandalism is sadly a part of wikipedia, and hundreds or thousands of us spend a significant part of our time on the project, finding and removing it. One of the ways that questionable edits are 'detected' is by watching for similar patterns of edits, for instance, an edit by a relatively new user to a topic such as Obesity.

Your link to your website

Your addition was spotted and in the opinion of the other editor, was unauthoritative. It also is an ad-driven site, so one might suppose that a link to the site, added by the site's owner, would be added to wikipedia for the sole purpose of increasing revenue. (Whether this is true or not is beyond the scope of this message.)

Who am I?

I'm one of the editors who attempt to save wikipedia resources, by volunteering to help with these minor editing disputes, and by helping to explain policies -- I also can help editors express themselves to other editors in the context of those policies, that is one of the things what the Association of Member Advocates does...

I personally am unqualified to judge your site, however, the editor who removed your link is also a doctor, and I am confident that their intent was appropriate... they could still be wrong, or right, I am not really commenting on that.

At this point, I'm just here to help you get settled in with a minimum of misunderstanding.

Some helpful reading

It might be helpful to read our guidelines, and this essay may be helpful in introducing them to you. It tells why we have several of our fundamental policies, and has links to them.

One policy is 'no original research' which is one that as a doctor you will encounter often, and a corrolary applies to editors citing themselves, and how to determine a reputable publication. Wikipedia, as an encyclpedia, is intended to be a secondary source of information, which references reliable primary sources of verifiable information.

Is your link appropriate?

If, after reading the policies mentioned above, you feel that your website follows the reliable sources guideline and is a 'reputable publication' and not 'original research', consider whether it is appropriate, to link to it from the perspective of "will other editors consider a link to the site to be appropriate" (in terms of linking to advertisement-driven sites).

Will others think your link is appropriate?

Since anyone can edit, anything added to wikipedia must make it past the scrutiny of thousands of others, so making sure your content is appropriate is essential to acheiving what I call a 'stable edit' -- one that does not get deleted or substantially changed. Stable edits are what makes up the bulk of the best articles.

Would a different link be better?

It might be useful in terms of the main goal — which, summed up, is to write a good encyclopedia — to consider an alternate source for specific information or to cite the actual material that is relevant to the article, rather than just put a link into the external links section.

What to do now?

If you still feel that your link is appropriate, you can discuss it with other editors. Generally speaking, discussing controversial additions or deletions to a given article's content should be done on the article's talk page:

User:Jfdwolff, as a colleague of yours, felt that your link was inappropriate, and removed it, and if you wish, you may contact him on his talk page and discuss it. Bear in mind that civility is a requirement by policy, and it is important to stay civil, simply because tha community needs civility in order to function.

Obesity's talk page

It is even more appropriate to discuss controversial edits on the article's talk page, which in the case of the Obesity article is here: Talk:Obesity. Be assured that anything you write on the talk page will be read by your collaborators, especially so with a very active article such as Obesity. Be patient, it may take a day or more for all the active contributor's to the article to see and reply to your comments... especially on a long holiday weekend (which this weekend is, in the U.S.).
