I understand that you have deep insight into the subjects you're editing, but Wikipedia relies on referenced reliable sources. Hello Bennyhester. We welcome your contributions to Wikipedia, but if you are affiliated with some of the people, places or things you have written about on Wikipedia, you may have a conflict of interest or close connection to the subject.

All editors are required to comply with Wikipedia's neutral point of view content policy. People who are very close to a subject often have a distorted view of it, which may cause them to inadvertently edit in ways that make the article either too flattering or too disparaging. People with a close connection to a subject are not absolutely prohibited from editing about that subject, but they need to be especially careful about ensuring their edits are verified by reliable sources and writing with as little bias as possible.

If you are very close to a subject, here are some ways you can reduce the risk of problems:

  • Avoid or exercise great caution when editing or creating articles related to you, your organization, or its competitors, as well as projects and products they are involved with.
  • Be cautious about deletion discussions. Everyone is welcome to provide information about independent sources in deletion discussions, but avoid advocating for deletion of articles about your competitors.

For the record, I don't particularly like the hedge that Wikipedia has created around conflict of interest, but do agree that it's best to use caution when editing an article about yourself. Your username[edit]

Welcome to Wikipedia. I noticed that your username, "Bennyhester", may not meet Wikipedia's username policy because usernames which might imply your are a specific identifiable person such as Benny Hester are not allowed per WP:IMPERSONATE unless it is your real name. In the case of the latter, the account still may be temporarily blocked as a precaution until your identity can be verified. If you believe that your username does not violate our policy, please leave a note here explaining why. The user name does not violate the policy as the editor, who has discussed the page with me in a separate forum, is the subject in question. I have monitored the editor's additions to verify that they do not violate COI or other policies. Walter Görlitz (talk) 07:28, 11 February 2017 (UTC)[reply]
It's fine for the editor to use their real name, but it might be a good idea for them to send an email to OTRS verifying such a thing just to avoid a possible precautionary block. Not everyone is privy to the details of your disucssions with this person or even knows where to find such a discussion. An OTRS volunteer can verify any email sent in by this editor and then add {{OTRS identity}} to the user page to show that he has been verified to be Benny Hester.
Since you're monitoring the editor's additions, perhaps you can help advise him that reverting another editor like they did here is generally not considered to be a minor edit, unless it's to revert blatant vandalism. COI editors are allowed encouraged to make only uncontroversial edits to article per WP:COIADVICE, and minor edits are considered to be uncontroversial. Looking at his edit history, he has marked many of his edits as minor even though in some cases they probably weren't. It's probably just a mistake, but any new content (text or image) being added to the article should not be marked as a minor edit. -- Marchjuly (talk) 23:11, 11 February 2017 (UTC)[reply]
