Bot error

This edit by the bot created a link to a disambiguation page. Since the template offers no facility to have no link in that space, having a self-referential link is better than having an erroneous disambiguation link. Therefore, the bot created an error. bd2412 T 22:15, 21 August 2014 (UTC)

BD2412, I haven't a clue what you are referring to. The bot did not create any links, little alone one to a dab page. Also, don't remove redirects on editor's pages that they have put in place. Bgwhite (talk) 22:23, 21 August 2014 (UTC)
I provided the link to the diff. For whatever reason, the bot made that edit, which caused the template to default to a disambig link. Also, your bot's instructions say "To stop this bot until restarted by the bot's owner, edit its talk page. If that page is a redirect, edit that original redirecting page, not the target of the redirect", which is precisely what I did. bd2412 T 22:27, 21 August 2014 (UTC)
There was absolutely no reason to stop the bot, especially when the bot made the particular edit over a month ago. The instructions do not say, "to contact me, stop the bot."
BD2412, the bot made a correct edit. Per MOS, no wikilink should link to itself. This is a case of garbage in and garbage out. The editor should not have put the link there in the first place. No link at all would be the correct thing to do. Bgwhite (talk) 22:50, 21 August 2014 (UTC)
The template is made to provide case citations, including the name of (and a link to) the cited case. The template doesn't know if the case cited is for the article containing it, or for a different article. I grant that the template should not do so, particularly where this creates a disambiguation link. It would be nice, however, if the correction implemented would not revert the link to a disambiguation link. I apologize for stopping the bot. bd2412 T 02:22, 22 August 2014 (UTC)

Request to remove the re-direct of Sheringham Hall to Sheringham Park

Hello Bgwhite

I want to create this article but at this present time there is a re-direct in place for Sheringham hall to Sheringham Park. I am creating the article because although the hall was once the house built on the estate it is now considered two different properties. The park is wholly owned by the National trust whereas the hall has been sold on a long lease as a family home and is not part of the national trusts Sheringham park holdings. As understand things, this needs to be carried out by an administrator and I see from the page history you have contributed to Sheringham park article. Can you help me with this please. Regards Dennisbluie (talk) 07:35, 21 August 2014 (UTC)

Donald Snygg

Thank you for your suggestions for my article on Donald Snygg. I am puzzled about your deletions of references to the two most important publications: (1941) Psychological Review and (1949) Individual Behavior. Should they be placed elsewhere in the article? What is your thinking? Oswegotownie (talk) 10:23, 23 August 2014 (UTC) You've deleted reference to his thesis too. What gives? Oswegotownie (talk) 10:28, 23 August 2014 (UTC)

Oswegotownie It was more of what they were sourcing and not the refs themselves. (1941) Psychological Review was referencing, "To learn about his contributions to this field and experience the clarity of his writing, see his 1941 article." I personally don't think this belongs in the article in its current state. Maybe put it in external links? If you feel strongly about any refs, add them back in. The ones I strongly object to would be all the obituaries. There doesn't need to be six of them.
Need to remove "Current views on Phenomenological Psychology can be found in several Wikipedia articles:" section. As anybody can put anything into articles, it's not a big deal. Bgwhite (talk) 17:54, 23 August 2014 (UTC)
I reworded the "Found in several Wikipedia articles" sentence, plus combined the preface section with the lead section. Lead and preface are sort of the same thing. Bgwhite (talk) 18:01, 23 August 2014 (UTC)

Ohnoitsjamie, it is not a good sign when you do a Google search (for "Chicken Little 2" "Zach Braff") for any hit in the past year and the website pixiepranks-panstinkerbell.blogspot.com is the majority of the results. It is India, no plot given anywhere. --Captain Assassin! «TCG» 05:39, 5 September 2014 (UTC)
Assassin, that gave me a good laugh. You are right, Indian films have no plot. Typical film starts out with a blessing and ends with a dance. In between we have singing, love, singing, love triangle, singing, the stress of the lovers being apart, singing, a friend or family member dies and then more singing. :) Reminds me of a typical U.S. country music song... dog died, wife left and 1/2 the song is about his truck. Bgwhite (talk) 05:54, 5 September 2014 (UTC)
Haha, yep, I know, that's why I've left watching Indian films. Just the old and same stories, repeating dance and fight, in all movies. --Captain Assassin! «TCG» 08:09, 5 September 2014 (UTC)

Requesting an edit for the Harp Twins article

Dear Bgwhite, it is with immense pleasure that I write to you, as always. You are one of the finest human beings ever to walk the Earth, or any other planet, for that matter. Thanks to you, I know that the future of humanity is bright. But don't think that I'm being kind to you expecting to receive favors... Never! You and I go back a long ways... to 2013, I think, so my praise is absolutely sincere. Anyway, last night I received a divine revelation in a dream: God told me that there was a way to find a Toshiba commercial in which the Twins were featured, even though the link was dead. So this morning I followed God's holy instructions, and lo and behold! There it was! Resurrected from the dead! Then - guided by the holy Spirit - I decided to contact you. You see, although some cat videos have 100 million views, a specific cat doesn't appear in several commercials and movies, as the Twins have. This is all that is said about the Kitt sisters regarding this extremely sensitive matter:

"They have also appeared in several films."

As you well know, beloved brother, this is an abomination in the sight of the Lord. Iniquity of the worst conceivable sort. So I have come to you - a living legend of righteousness, and a hero - lest our land become desolate, the haunt of jackals, because of the wrath of the Lord. Please add this acting section to the article. It's very concise, but necessary because it's morally wrong and utterly contemptible to neglect the fact that the Twins have been hired for acting jobs to a degree that is notable by the sacred Wikipedia standards.

May the Lord bless your descendants to the 89th generation, and please send my greetings to your enchanting mother-in-law. Dontreader (talk) 01:44, 11 September 2014 (UTC)

Dontreader, you had me going... really enjoying your uplifting and spiritual message, until you mentioned the spawn of Satan. How dare you even utter the Lord and the vile mother-in-law in the same message. There has been sad news about the evil one. She recently broke her foot and had her thyroid removed due to cancer. The news isn't good at all, she is expected to be just fine and still live a long life. Crap.
I added the acting section, however I didn't mention the commercials. Usually the are just minor and shouldn't be mentioned. Bgwhite (talk) 20:17, 11 September 2014 (UTC)
Dear Bgwhite, I wailed and gnashed my teeth, and I rent my garments, when I read that your adorable mother-in-law broke her foot and had cancer. I then got down on my knees, imploring the Lord to let her live to be 100, at least. Whenever I ask her to add a section to an article, she gladly adds the complete (and perfect) version, asking nothing in return. Thank you, Bgwhite, for your kind help. I will build another golden statue of you in my village, for posterity, but I won't give you a Barnstar for your user page (even though you have received very few) because you butchered my inspired work! Even the citation appears as a mere link in the references section... what a disgrace! Not precisely the way for my "shrine" to reach Featured Article status! Dontreader (talk) 20:55, 11 September 2014 (UTC)

Abhinand1234, the reason for deletion is here. In order for the photos to be reinstated, permission will have to come from Nair. Presumably she owns the copyright, thus she is the only one that can release it. Information on how to do it is at Wikipedia:Requesting copyright permission. Hi. BG19bot deleted a bunch of citations in this edit. I can't figure out why, from either the comment, nor from looking at the diff.

Can you have a look? Cheers. N2e (talk) 11:06, 14 September 2014 (UTC)

N2e The bot did not delete any citation. It merged them. Check the output. Thanks, Magioladitis (talk) 11:18, 14 September 2014 (UTC)
Oh, I see now. But you can't see that from either the diff, nor the edit comment. I had to go do other searches to confirm that.
You might want to consider improving the edit msg to include "merged n refs that were duplicates", or something like that, in order to make it more clear.
Thanks for the response, and thanks for writing and maintaining a bot to do these essential cleanup tasks! N2e (talk) 04:40, 15 September 2014 (UTC)

Chandra4479, I did review the material that you removed. I looked at all three references. The references did back up what was being sourced as I already pointed out on your talk page. In your revert, you said the material did not belong with Kalyandurg, but instead with Kolakaluru. No where in the references is Kolakaluru mentioned. Tell me where in the reference that this belongs to Kolakaluru and not Kalyandurg? It specifically says the village name is Kalyandurg. You are removing sourced material that is valid. You give no proof that it is not valid.
In edits in which you add material, you give no references.
One must add sourced material, which Vin19 is doing. You are not adding sourced material. Who you are or what your know isn't worth anything on Wikipedia. Only valid references. Also, please sign your posts. Bgwhite (talk) 02:46, 16 September 2014 (UTC)

GamerGate

Thanks for putting GamerGate under 48-hour protection. This has been by far the most consensus-resistant article in which I have ever been involved (and for all I know it may be setting a new Wikipedia record for intractability). May cooler heads prevail! kencf0618 (talk) 01:01, 17 September 2014 (UTC)

Yep. It's become an echo chamber of edits, or rather a large set of echo chambers of edits. I knew when I wrote one of its initial articles that it would be quite controversial, but barring further developments I don't see how a consensus can even begin to congeal. Too many primary sources, and everyone thinks they have an iron in this fire. As things now stand, edits should be subject to preview as with Zoe Quinn. kencf0618 (talk) 23:04, 17 September 2014 (UTC)

Chambers v. Mississippi

I saw that you removed the infobox on my new Chambers v. Mississippi article. (I wasn't alerted to this in any way, but fortunately I noticed it.) Could you be a little bit more specific about what the problem is, so I'll be aware both for this article and future ones? Thanks, Newyorkbrad (talk) 23:17, 8 September 2014 (UTC)

Newyorkbrad, see the edit summary. Bgwhite (talk) 23:20, 8 September 2014 (UTC)
I saw that you preferred a slightly different infobox template, but I'm not seeing how the output of the two of them differs materially from each other, nor why the best way to deal with my having inadvertently used an old template (if that's what happened) was to remove the infobox altogether. Newyorkbrad (talk) 23:29, 8 September 2014 (UTC)
  • Newyorkbrad, You didn't use a template for the infobox or the "This article or section is in the process of an expansion or major restructuring" tag. You used the straight up template programming code. This is completely different from a template. One should never use code, but the template. In the article's case, {{Infobox SCOTUS case}} and {{Under construction}} templates.
  1. For regular editors, it is easier to edit a template than the code.
  2. For sites such as Bing and Google, they use information from the templates, but they cannot retrieve info from the coding.
  3. For Wikidata, they can retrieve the information from the templates, but not from the coding.
  • If the article has been around for awhile or it is being done by a new editor, I do convert the code to the template. For some reason, school infoboxes seem to be the majority of them. As the article is under construction and you are not a new editor, I left the misery fun to you. Bgwhite (talk) 00:15, 9 September 2014 (UTC)

Thanks for the explanation. It's been a few months since I'd created one of these articles. I'll take a look at this tomorrow and try to get the templating right. Newyorkbrad (talk) 00:42, 9 September 2014 (UTC)

Well, I have tried to follow your suggestion, which I take to mean subst'ing in the infobox template and then filling in the fields, as opposed to the way I have done things in the dozen or so case articles I've created previously. Either I am missing something, or the template has become infinitely more complicated in the past year or so, or I am doing something wrong, because the subst'ed template is almost incomprehensible and I have no idea where to fill in anything. What am I missing? Newyorkbrad (talk) 01:52, 17 September 2014 (UTC)
Newyorkbrad, I'll convert it over within the next day. You did bring a smile to my face. The thought of you trying to convert while most likely cursing my name. You need to contact my wife because she has cursing at me down to an art form. I do wish alot of editors could struggle every once in awhile... it would make them understand what a newbie goes thru. Bgwhite (talk) 05:00, 17 September 2014 (UTC)
Newyorkbrad, I just added the infobox to the article. Bgwhite (talk) 00:13, 18 September 2014 (UTC)

Reference Errors on 17 September

Hello, I'm ReferenceBot. I have automatically detected that some edits performed by you may have introduced errors in referencing. They are as follows:

Please check these pages and fix the errors highlighted. If you think this is a false positive, you can report it to my operator. Thanks, ReferenceBot (talk) 00:32, 18 September 2014 (UTC)

Checkwiki

Thanks for this edit. Had a question about checkwiki. Who has created most of the fixes? OccultZone (TalkContributionsLog) 12:44, 17 September 2014 (UTC)

OccultZone, there is no way to determine that. Everything at WMF Tools is behind a proxy server, so I have no access to IP addresses. I can say that over 50% comes from WPCleaner, but that is also misleading. Every time an article is fixed via WPCleaner, it contacts the web server to remove the individual article from a list. AWB doesn't do that. With AWB most people finish a list and press the "Set all articles as done" link on the web page. Bgwhite (talk) 20:13, 17 September 2014 (UTC)
Never knew about it. Thanks! OccultZone (TalkContributionsLog) 03:39, 18 September 2014 (UTC)

Think Poodle, :Bgwhite

And breeathe deeply, it will go over... Hafspajen (talk) 10:43, 18 September 2014 (UTC)

Hafspajen Ahhh, such a cute poodle. Much more lovable than the two sitting next to me. Ok, that makes up for your serious transgressions. Bgwhite (talk) 17:24, 18 September 2014 (UTC)
No worries, you must be very musically inclined. Hafspajen (talk) 17:28, 18 September 2014 (UTC)

Box Office ?'s

So I normally love updating box office figures (with all the digits, not like $23.4 million), however the other day a guy named STATicVapor (who I've had disagreements with over format before) changed many of my updates and said it was vandelism and improper format. What's right when doing box office? "$135.7 million" or "135,724,985"? Thanks, man

TropicAces. I don't know, so I had to track down where the rule is. The documentation for {{Infobox film}} says, "Use condensed, rounded values ($22.4 million vs $22,392,684). Precise values should be used where stable and appropriate to the context, or significant in themselves for some special reason. (See also: MOS:LARGENUM and this consensus discussion.)" BG19bot defect

Please examine this sequence for Opple Lighting

You will see that the first had a mix of = = and == == combinations, which despite the single equal sign error (WP:MOSHEAD), did maintain the Table of Contents with subdirectories.

When BG19bot made its edits in the second, it converted the = = combination but not did not attend to the the == == combination. Thus, the Table of Contents lost all notion of subdirectories, as everything was a level 1 heading.

I made the repair in the third, reestablishing the subdirectories.

Please disable the BG19bot tool until you fix this as it is currently doing more harm than good.

Peaceray (talk) 05:29, 18 September 2014 (UTC)

Peaceray, per MOSHEAD, section headings do not start out at level 1 (=). Period. All ToC order was already destroyed for those using screen readers. Bgwhite (talk) 05:50, 18 September 2014 (UTC)
Bgwhite, I respectfully disagree. I think that we are talking a little bit of apples & oranges here. Your comment & bot address the initial problem, but I am writing about an unintended side effect of BG19bot.
Now, I am all for MOS:HEAD, but while your bot fixes one type of malformed heading for screen readers, it causes another problem in breaking the rest of TOC order by effectively moving the other level headings up a level. There should be a relatively straight forward fix for the BG19bot that would correct this problem & preserve the TOC. Change the algorithm so that when the = = combination is encountered, just add another = character to every other == ==, === ===, & etc. combination. I know it may be a pain to do that & I know that there is exception logic (what to do with a single = = occurrence, & what to do with = == & == = combinations, for example), but I willing to bet that it's an easily achievable fix.

Hi - do you think it deserves more than "B" rating? Think enough interest could be gathered to give it a shot of development to reach an "A"? --Smkolins (talk) 22:58, 18 September 2014 (UTC)

Smkolins, yes it is a B and close to an A. The first thing that pops into my mind is some photos. Also, need to fix the red errors in the reference section. Bgwhite (talk) 23:09, 18 September 2014 (UTC)
Yeah pictures. Since he an historical figure everything is in libraries or museums or bad pictures in scans of newspapers…. As for "the red errors" either my browser doesn't render them or I'm missing them. --Smkolins (talk) 23:13, 18 September 2014 (UTC)
Smkolins,Any photo of him about 34 years old and younger wouldn't have copyrights attached. I'm fixing the red errors. Bgwhite (talk) 23:24, 18 September 2014 (UTC)
Thanks - i noticed a few cases where "pages" was used for one page references…. I know where there are some pictures so will check copyrights…. --Smkolins (talk) 23:30, 18 September 2014 (UTC)
Smkolins, after you find some photos, you should take it to WP:GA. Bgwhite (talk) 23:35, 18 September 2014 (UTC)
O btw - it's been sent. And another editor seems to have some good ideas on further refinement. Given some distance from the original work up I see room for improvement too. --Smkolins (talk) 10:06, 19 September 2014 (UTC)

Aachen Cathedral

Would you please explain that to me? Thanks in advance.--Liuthar (talk) 17:50, 19 September 2014 (UTC)

Liuthar, I covered most of it in the edit summary, but:
  • {{Multiple Issues}} template is not the right one to use. If you look at its documentation, the template is only for grouping other issue templates together.
  • One does not add their signature to the article.
  • "illustrated in a quite miserable qualitiy" is not something that needs to be mentioned in an article. That is more of a personal opinion. That goes on talk pages.
  • Alot of pages are better covered in other language Wikipedias. If you think another Wikipedia is appropriate, use the {{Expand German}} template. Bgwhite (talk) 18:32, 19 September 2014 (UTC)

Your edits were reverted by another editor. Since there seems to be more interest by others in the editing of this article I would like to move our communications to the article talk page if that is okay with you.Regards.   Bfpage |leave a message  11:36, 19 September 2014 (UTC)

Bfpage, I don't see that my edits were reverted, but instead of talking to you on you talk page, I'll will talk on the article's instead. Bgwhite (talk) 18:34, 19 September 2014 (UTC)

Thank you

...for the edits you made to Monarch butterfly migration. I have not mastered the art of citing references but I really, really like what I see you have done to the article. It will speed things immensely. Let me see if I understand what should be done:

  • enter the book or journal to be cited into the bibliography or journal section
  • use the {{sfn|author|date of publication|p=a page number}} template in the article for repeated citations from the same source
  • enter ISBN nos. with a hyphen after the first two numbers (why?)
  • did I miss anything else that you did?

  Bfpage |leave a message  10:07, 19 September 2014 (UTC)

(talk page stalker) @Bfpage: The technique which uses the {{sfn}} template is called Shortened footnotes.
ISBN numbers may be formatted using either spaces or hyphens, and these may be omitted; if present, the position of these is not critical, but there are standard positions which vary according to the first few digits. If the ISBN has ten digits, there will be three spaces or hyphens, see ISBN#Pattern for English language ISBNs; if the ISBN has thirteen digits, there will be four spaces or hyphens. For a thirteen-digit ISBN, there is a hyphen after the first three digits, and the last ten digits have the same pattern as a ten-digit ISBN. --Redrose64 (talk) 14:38, 19 September 2014 (UTC)
Thank you Redrose, I feel smarter now. I know it took time to answer my question and I appreciate that.   Bfpage |leave a message  17:59, 19 September 2014 (UTC)
Bfpage, if you ever have technical questions, Redrose64 is the one I go to.
I knew the change would come as a big shock. I didn't know what you know or don't know, therefore the message on your talk page. As always, ask away any questions. I think it has been three months since I've bumped into you and the Monarch articles. Man, they have greatly improved. Bgwhite (talk) 18:44, 19 September 2014 (UTC)
I thought your edits were amazing and I have learned so much from them. Unfortunately they were reverted. There needs to be discussion on the article's talk page.   Bfpage |leave a message  19:33, 19 September 2014 (UTC)
