HSV[edit]

There was one sourced entry in the entire section - it was out-of-date and violated WP:NOTSTATS, as I have already explained. Other articles have unreferenced stats? WP:OTHERSTUFFEXISTS i.e. that is largely irrelevant - but feel free to remove them if they are unreferenced and violate NOTSTATS. GiantSnowman 08:12, 24 October 2013 (UTC)[reply]

PS the new section is much, much better. GiantSnowman 09:40, 24 October 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Your contributed article, Dave Burton[edit]

If this is the first article that you have created, you may want to read the guide to writing your first article.

Hello, I noticed that you recently created a new page, Dave Burton. First, thank you for your contribution; Wikipedia relies solely on the efforts of volunteers such as you. Unfortunately, the page you created covers a topic on which we already have a page – David Burton (cricketer, born 1985). Because of the duplication, your article has been tagged for speedy deletion. If the topic of the article you created is one that interests you, then perhaps you would like to help out at David Burton (cricketer, born 1985) – you might like to discuss new information at the article's talk page.

If you think the article you created should remain separate, you may contest the nomination by visiting the page and clicking the button labelled "Click here to contest this speedy deletion". This will give you the opportunity to explain why you believe the page should not be deleted. However, be aware that once a page is tagged for speedy deletion, it may be removed without delay. Please do not remove the speedy deletion tag from the page yourself, but do not hesitate to add information in line with Wikipedia's policies and guidelines. If the page is deleted, and you wish to retrieve the deleted material for future reference or improvement, you can place a request here. Additionally if you would like to have someone review articles you create before they go live so they are not nominated for deletion shortly after you post them, allow me to suggest the article creation process and using our search feature to find related information we already have in the encyclopedia. Default sorting of categories[edit]

Hello! It's fantastic to see someone completing the Northamptonshire redlinks, we're getting toward 10,000 articles on English cricketers rather quickly now! When adding categories to the articles, would it be possible to include {{DEFAULTSORT:surname, first name}} at the start of the categories just so the players can be sorted in categories alphabetically by their surnames. Keep up the good work! Thanks. Howzat?Out!Out!Out! (talk) 20:47, 24 November 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Bill Greenwood[edit]

Hi there, I noticed the disambiguation move of the baseball player Bill Greenwood. Are you planning on adding more Bill Greenwoods? If not, is there a guideline that you are using to justify moving the primary topic? Neonblak talk - 13:39, 29 November 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Sure. See Bill Greenwood (cricketer). Thanks. --Bill (talk) 13:48, 29 November 2013 (UTC)[reply]
I just noticed the page creation. Either the original Bill Greenwood page needs to become the disamb page for all Bill Greenwoods or a hatnote needs to be placed on the baseball player for the cricketer. Or, I may be just jumping the gun again.Neonblak talk - 13:59, 29 November 2013 (UTC)[reply]
It looks as if the baseball player was significant in his sport, though I know nothing about baseball, while the cricketer was "ordinary" by first-class standards. So I would make the baseball page the disambig one. It's up to you as I'm fairly new and still getting used to site customs. Thanks. --Bill (talk) 14:04, 29 November 2013 (UTC)[reply]
Thank you for your contributions. The reason I asked the second question is that there should be a way for people to find the cricketer. Since you moved the baseball player already, the "Bill Greenwood" redirect page should become the disamb page. If you were to keep the baseball player as the primary topic, it should have stayed put, with a hatnote directing people to the cricketer.Neonblak talk - 14:17, 29 November 2013 (UTC)[reply]

There's an interesting Sussex player I've been meaning to research, George Helm who randomly died in his carriage in Cornwall. And another really early one, name escapes me, who was a world leading beekeeper! But you're doing a great job, I think we'll have articles on 10,000 English cricketers before the year is out! I'm back, just not as active as I once was. I'm focusing more on minor counties players who played the odd first-class match here and there at the moment. My userpage has a tonne of names from some more obscure first-class teams! All the best Howzat?Out!Out!Out! (talk) 20:51, 12 December 2013 (UTC)[reply]
Glad to hear it. CricketArchive can sometimes throw up an interesting fact like Helm's death in his carriage. Worth including for added value. Bis bald. --Bill (talk) 21:19, 12 December 2013 (UTC)[reply]
Found an interesting one today, Thomas Leventhorpe, turns out his younger brother was an American Civil War general. Makes me wonder if this was known previously? Howzat?Out!Out!Out! (talk) 18:50, 13 December 2013 (UTC)[reply]
Guess not. CricketArchive and CricInfo no mention. Collett Leventhorpe authors made connection but unknown in cricket world, I'd say. Good stuff. --Bill (talk) 05:06, 14 December 2013 (UTC)[reply]
Might be an interesting random addition to his CI page! The Middlesex question! We typically use Middlesex county cricket teams to describe Middlesex teams prior to the formation of the CCC. Hope that helps! Howzat?Out!Out!Out! (talk) 10:24, 14 December 2013 (UTC)[reply]

CricketArchive and Cricinfo difference[edit]

Reginald Medhurst is another strange Sussex one in terms of what is known about him. CA says he was born at Lewes and was called Reginald, with the middle name Frank. CI says he was born at Sydenham, London and was called Robert, with the middle name Henry! Howzat?Out!Out!Out! (talk) 23:23, 20 December 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Hey, tell you what I think has happened here. Two different people. Note the Lincolnshire connection. I'll bet one R Medhurst played for Lincs, the other for Sussex, and CA merged them as the Lincs player! Cool? No. Whaddawedo!? I got the 1949 Playfair somewhere. Will check if averages list RF or RH? Bis bald. --Bill (talk) 05:40, 21 December 2013 (UTC)[reply]

I know I should be grateful and that it's a charitable time of the year. So it's very wrong of me to feel a bit miffed that the list I've been working on for the past several months, gently and gradually, and had almost completed – and for which I had the remaining material in a notebook – has been swept up and completed while I was enjoying my Christmas lunch. Ah well, I'll find myself something else to do. Happy Christmas. Johnlp (talk) 20:56, 25 December 2013 (UTC)[reply]

List of Leics players[edit]

Yes, it's a down-side of following the dates in CricketArchive too closely: inside the player profiles they differentiate between FC and non-FC, but in their lists they tend not to and include second eleven appearances for players who later appeared in the first team (eg Paul Munden). I don't worry too much about redlinks: they're a useful indication that an article is needed, whereas many of the bluelinks lead to stubs that carry no more information than would normally be housed in an infobox (and probably better housed there!). But you can't tell that they're like that until you open them. KR. Johnlp (talk) 11:00, 4 January 2014 (UTC)[reply]

January 2014[edit]

Hello, I'm BracketBot. I have automatically detected that your edit to List of Worcestershire CCC players may have broken the syntax by modifying 2 "()"s. If you have, don't worry: just edit the page again to fix it. If I misunderstood what happened, or if you have any questions, you can leave a message on my operator's talk page.

List of unpaired brackets remaining on the page:
  • * [[Iftikhar Ali Khan Pataudi]] (1932–1938) : Nawab of ) : Pataudi
  • * [[Arthur Somers-Cocks, 6th Baron Somers]] (1923–1925) : Lord ) : Somers

Thanks, BracketBot (talk) 16:49, 19 January 2014 (UTC)[reply]

William Riley[edit]

Hi there Bill - just noticed a discrepancy in my list - two occurrences of a William Riley: One refers to: William Riley (Notts.) (the one about whom you wrote an article on the evening of January 11), and one refers to William Riley (Leics) (this guy). If you feel like writing an article on the latter, please feel free to do so - then that's another tricky situation fixed.

Wiki on! Bobo. 00:39, 20 January 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Good good. The only other William Riley in the world of first-class cricket is the Australian WN Riley, who, in any case, went under the name Norman Riley. 1. Only a single first-class appearance though, might be worth throwing an article together about him... Bobo. 15:56, 20 January 2014 (UTC)[reply]
Not heard of him. I'll put him in my list, though. Thanks again. --Bill (talk) 07:45, 22 January 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Okay, I'll see what I can do. But. Note I won't have time myself till about March (see notice above). When you have more time yourself, I suggest you join the site with a membership (easy to set up) and do what you can to help. It's worth it to provide useful information for researchers. Cool. Shame about the politics of course. --Bill (talk) 20:06, 23 January 2014 (UTC)[reply]
