Oh no, it's him again!

On the subject of Leyland, I'm a bit light on material for his early career. I've got Wisden up until the 1925 edition, but nothing after until he plays Test cricket apart from the odd fragment of Cardus and from the Times. I'd be extremely grateful if you could do a quick Wisden trawl for 1925-28, and particularly for the MCC tour of India in 1926-27. And of course, anything else you may have! No urgency on this one, just if or when you have the time and inclination. And I may be back for his later career as there were a few seasons when he began very poorly then scored ridiculously heavily in July and August. Cheers! Really specific one this time! Leyland bowled far more in 1928 than ever before: the obvious explanation being the death of Roy Kilner. I don't suppose Wisden mentions this explicitly for the 1928 season? Sarastro1 (talk) 22:21, 29 January 2013 (UTC)

Still in the 1929 edition, the Cricinfo copy of Leyland's cricketer of the year citation says "and a fine forcing game when it is necessary to make runs quietly", which doesn't really make sense. Could you check the original to see if it should say "quickly"? And if it does, what is the page number of the article, and I might change the citation to the paper copy. Yes indeed, I'm certainly better described as more active than I am retired! That sounds like a plan with the names, I'll also add the obscure ones to disambiguation pages. I remember doing the lists of Hampshire players a couple of years back, which took an absolute age, it is a long term plan to get one done for all global first-class teams (daunting). Elliot

The CU player was listed in the ACS guide to CU cricketers as Sir George Elliot 1812 to 1901 one of several Sir George Elliots including the contemporaneous industrialist. The scotish birthdate came later and put him a year younger but it was not a requirement to be in residence to play(IG Peck and JM Brearley) for the university and still isn't. Only the University match requires that qualification. The more famous Admiral Elliot was Scotish and I presume the Admiral GA Elliot, his son was the cricketer - it is too much of a co-incidence otherwise. P Bailey who compiles CA is impossible to shift if he believes something and I presume he has not seen a birth certificate and thus has not appended the 'Augustus' second name. Were GA Elliot a naval officer, he would have attended Dartmouth rather than Cambridge. By the age of 20-23 he would have likely been at sea in command of something. My father in law was a Surgeon Commander and he has free access to the Navy list but it will be December before I see him though I can get him on Skype in about a fortnight (he's on holiday at present). The issue with CA has always been that PB is unwilling to trust all but a few contributors if he himself has not seen the evidence at first hand. Hold on - by chance I have a list or two her and the one for 1848 lists him(on raising to rank of Admiral (age 36) as George Elliot - the Augustus may have been a later affectation. I'm looking to see if the Abe Waddington article can be beefed up a little, having found some nice juicy scandal about him in the Yorkshire Post just after the War. With that in mind, I think his playing career needs de-statsing to get away from the list of numbers. I'd be ever so grateful if you could check the 1920, 1927, and 1928 Yorkshire summary in Wisden. And maybe the 1929 for good measure. I have the Willows versions of the rest, and get the impression that poor old Abe was not too highly thought of. I would be inclined to move the article to A. E. Bailey, and provide both possibilities for his first name, unless we find a third source (that isn't a mirror or copy from one of the others) that clarifies one way or the other. I would be inclined to agree that CA is more likely to be right, but given that he would have been referred to by his initials during his career, this seems the safest way to go for now. Page protection would have minimal to no impact on you because it merely prevents IPs and non-registered users from using the page. Apart from the banned user, your page history shows that no one other than autoregistered users has ever been here. If this page is protected, you will be able to use the site in peace. Yes, maybe, but perhaps not in the same series as other tours, where we used the "X team in Y in 0000" convention: there never was a "South African cricket team in England in 1970" so that title would be wrong. I'm not averse to a separate article on "The South African cricket tour of England in 1970" or some such, or to it being a subsection under the more general article about the apartheid boycott which really began to take effect from that point. Hi John,

thanks for taking the time to get involved in this discussion. This page has already been taken to AfD and a consensus reached. Please see here: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia:Articles_for_deletion/Major_cricket. The onus is now on anyone who wishes to see the page re-instated to make their case and seek consensus before re-instating.

I am aware that you were not aware of the full situation and am now going to ask you politely since you were kind enough to get involved and are now aware of the community consensus as to this page. Please follow correct protocol and carry out the correct procedure and delete the page. I am not interested in getting in an edit war with an irate editor, perhaps as a neutral (?) third party, you can do what needs to be done. I will just mention that deliberately ignoring a community consensus is a bannable offence. Perhaps someone should have a quiet word with jack? It would be a shame to see such an enthusiastic editor permanently banned from our community.

List of Oxford University Cricket Club players

Hello, John. I've "officially" retired from WP but still need to use it a lot for reference. I've been logged out for about a month but today I decided that it really is easier to use the site logged in, so here I am. Top of my watchlist was this list and I immediately thought: "Oh, I left that with a load of nolinks, didn't I?" You are manfully striving to improve it. Well, I won't have a lot of time and I may be absent for days on end but I'll try and help you with this one. As you are doing "B", I'll start at the bottom and work up. We've done very well with all the other English club lists but this one is in a bit of a state.

Also, you were absolutely right to revert the removal of info from Fred Titmus. This sort of issue has cropped up a number of times where a very old article has been left behind by the site's evolution, especially re MOS and inline citations. The article was written by our old friend Loganberry who normally focused on Worcestershire. It is a good article and I doubt very much if there's anything in it that is misinformation; it just needs some citations and some rephrasing to lift it from the 2006 standard to the 2016 one.

I think it would be perfectly reasonable to remove this "incident" entirely from this article. A child was killed by a train at the same station in 2019, and that isn't mentioned at all. It seems invidious to mention one but not another, and it's likely that there have been other similar events over the years before 2015. It's not really relevant to the article on the station, and Wikipedia is not a newspaper! Just delete that whole section. Johnlp (talk) 23:20, 6 May 2020 (UTC)

Tom Flynn (umpire)

Flynn's appointment to the two Melbourne Cricket Ground Tests in the 1894–95 season proved uncontroversial, but he was also nominated to umpire the fourth Test of the series at Sydney, alongside Phillips; the match followed the New South Wales game against Victoria, and Flynn was Victoria's regular umpire between 1891 and 1895. Although he had umpired the New South Wales v Victoria matches at Sydney in the four preceding seasons and had umpired a Test there in 1892, Flynn was refused permission to travel to Sydney by his employer in Melbourne, the Fitzroy Cricket Club, for whom he was the groundsman (curator). @AssociateAffiliate: I have a lot of Wisdens going back to 1890 (missing some war years), and I've bought every Playfair annual since 1957 (though whether I can find them all is another matter...) @AssociateAffiliate: I think with Wisden there's a danger in raising hopes that it can provide answers that other sources can't. In practice, Wisden is a bit like CricketArchive in yellow-brick form: it's a compendium of stats, with only the most cursory of editorial coverage, and it's good for verifying that certain matches took place and certain cricketers played in them, but no good for detail, and even less for "colour" or descriptive writing, except in the obits (available on cricinfo) and in the Cricketers of the Year citations. It's also, still, heavily weighted towards the English game: coverage of cricket worldwide has improved in the past 30 years, but for most of first 100 years of the editions I've got (1890 onwards) cricket outside England rated no more than a few pages, and most of that was Australian. In the 1950s, the "cricket in Pakistan" section was half a page every year, and no more. It was also, at least until 1980 (when the last of the Prestons died), appallingly snobbish: if your name was Marmaduke and you went to Winchester, you were much more likely to be singled out for attention than if your name was John Ford and you played once for Gloucestershire. Playfair is, of course, even more obviously a directory than Wisden. So I suspect your library ought to say that some WP:Cricket members have access to Wisden and Playfair and can look things up, but also to point out some of the limitations, and then maybe set aside an area where people can ask specific questions. Otherwise we stand a chance of being inundated with requests we can't then fulfil. Where Wisden is useful is in tracing the careers of prominent Test and good county players over several years: the county correspondents usually had a few pithy words on each regular player in their summaries of the previous season, and User:Sarastro1 used some of my Wisdens for his series of articles on cricketers of the 1920s and 1930s that reached GA and FA standard. It's also good on "issues", such as throwing or selectors' judgements. But for the cricketers whose biographies have proved controversial recently, it would be no help whatsoever. Unless their name was Marmaduke...

PS. I'm not really aware myself of ACS publications, aside from their work on what is, and what isn't, a first-class match (which CricketArchive follows). I'll maybe try to investigate, if I ever get time.

PPS. A lot of my books went into storage seven years ago when I moved house, and have not, so far, re-emerged. They include most of the Playfairs. I might need about seven years' notice if someone needs me to find something in one of them. The Wisdens are at least on my shelves here. Johnlp (talk) 17:24, 14 April 2021 (UTC)

I think the first few of mine are the News Chronicle Cricket Annual; Playfair adopted the News Chronicle format when the newspaper ceased publication in about 1960. Yes, I do wonder if I'm holding out too much hope on Wisden being a useful yellow-brick to throw at the deletionists! I have noticed from the published obits on Cricinfo that certain names and schools reoccur. While completing the OU cricketers last year I did notice that Lord Marmaduke, Old Etonian, two FC matches for OU had a lengthy obit, whereas I recall a county chap (name escapes me, but had played 17 FC matches in the 1920s I think) and not a thing. Turns out he wasn't from an elite public school, so Wisden didn't bother including his obit. I will add something along the lines of what you've suggested RE how useful they can be in a wider context. I imagine Playfair might prove useful for my umpires side-project I'm due to make a start on soon in regards to the FC umpires list pre-1980.
