Gary Davies (disambiguation)[edit]

Sorry I didn't put any sort of link on the American TV and film actor Gary Lee Davis, who shares his name with a notorious executed American rapist and murderer. I wanted to disambiguate the two after coming across the actor Davis' name in a WP article, and checking him out. I know he doesn't have a page to link to, but I'm hoping the IMDB link is okay. I'm afraid that external links aren't meant to be on disambiguation pages; it's essentially an index for WP articles. Ichecked to see if the actor is linked in any articles as 'Gary Lee Davis' but he doesn't seem to be. Do you remember which WP article you came across the actor on? If it is a significant mention, then you could add a redlink on the article, perhaps to [Gary Lee Davis (actor)]? Once he is redlinked in an article where he has a significant mention, then it's a valid addition to the disambiguation page. Also if you think this person meets the notability criteria at WP:Notability (people)#Creative professionals, then create a short article on him, and then he can be added. Ihope this makes sense. You have addressed me in German - which you have no reason to think I speak - and given no indication of which page you are talking about. I assume, from checking your recent contributions, that it is to do with you blanking the page at the redirect Jean Aubert‎, which was quickly reverted by someone else and I have now reverted again. If you are asking for the reason I changed this to a redirect, I gave the reason in the edit summary, with a link to the guidelines at MOS:DAB; it's pretty clear. If an article is created on another Jean Aubert, then this page would make a good disambiguation page, but should not be blanked - I have no idea what you were trying to achieve with that. I can only repeat that if you feel another Jean Aubert should have an article, then create the article, at something like [Jean Aubert the Younger] and then turn Jean Aubert into a disambiguation page. Joe Jackson[edit]

My point about redlinks on disambiguation pages is not that they're not valid but that they may not be valid, which is why they need some sort of establishing information. Joseph Jackson (Australian politician) could be anyone. You may know who he is, but I don't and neither will millions of other people. He could be completely non-notable (e.g. a member of a small town council). I have removed many such redlinks from disambiguation lists that are blatantly non-notable and will never have a valid article written about them. In addition, without some establishing information redlinks are utterly useless on disambiguation pages. What is the value of adding Joseph Jackson (Australian politician) without any further information? It adds nothing to the disambiguation page whatsoever, whereas if you specify that he is a member of the New South Wales State Legislative Assembly that at least gives the reader some idea of why he is notable and who he might be. -- Necrothesp (talk) 16:21, 28 December 2009 (UTC)[reply]

The (limited) value it adds is that someone looking for either of these could click on 'What links here' and see which articles mention him. I did of course check that there were links in articles before I restored them. They should have a bluelink with them, but it's better to have the job half-done than not at all. MOS:DABRL seems quite clear to me that these redlinks were valid, and it would have been as easy for you to add a relevant blue link as to delete them from the dab. The point is that I didn't know who they were, so couldn't really add a bluelink. It's incumbent upon the person who adds them to add the relevant information. Disambiguation pages aren't just a random assortment of information. You'll notice that the example redlink on MOS:DABRL does give further information. I quote [bolding mine]: "Red links should not be the only link in a given entry; link also to an existing article, so that a reader (as opposed to a contributing editor) will have somewhere to navigate to for additional information. Yes, they shouldn't be the only link on a line, but adding the blue link is more constructive than simply deleting. I don't add redlinks to dabs, but they are clearly valid.

I disagree. I don't think it is incumbent upon another editor to do the work that the original adder clearly couldn't be bothered to do. There is far too much rubbish on Wikipedia that is added by vandals, friends, people with a POV to push etc. I don't think it's at all unreasonable to delete redlinks without further info from disambiguation lists. That's fine, you have nothing to apologise for. You created a well-written article in good faith - you weren't to know that the subject didn't meet the guidelines. WP:MUSIC is quite a hard guideline for a singer to meet. It certainly developed into an argument - I've never seen a deletion discussion like it, but at least it's sorted now. Removal of Nick Jones from Disambiguation Page[edit]

Hello

I am writing an article on the entrepreneur Nick Jones who owns Babington House and is Managing Director and major shareholder of Soho House (club). I have no doubt from my research so far that his notability can easily be demonstrated. I have looked at the links you quoted when reverting my addition of this person's name to the disambiguation page but am not clear how they are relevant.

Could you please clarify? As always I wish to follow Wikipedia policy and am happy to learn if I make mistakes or misunderstand guidance.

Can you explain what's going on here, please? I came online today to see you and another editor had moved pages, removed redirects, "corrected" my spelling, changed names, added names etc, though what I wrote yesterday was correct, so far as I can tell from the sources. The child was given an unfortunate name, which even his family didn't learn how to spell, resulting in multiple names and multiple spellings, a confusion that was sadly reflective of his life. I created redirects for them, and over the course of the next few days and weeks will try to establish what the most common name was, and what name he was buried as. All I know for now is that a member of his family said he was named Clare Andrea Neilson at birth, but came to be known as Andy.

I find that a bit offensive - I didn't 'immediately assume' you couldn't spell, an editor posted on the Talk page that they were trying to move the page and didn't know how to, so I tried to help out. I haven't changed any information in the article, so you would need to check with that person. As for the prod, unless it's been drastically improved since I last saw it, this article gives no evidence of notability. I would usually consider it a candidate for speedy deletion, but I checked and saw that it was very new and that you were an experienced editor, so I applied a prod and let you know - this gave you the options of either removing it, or using the week or so the prod lasts to improve the article. You may remember we had a bit of a disagreeement about Rashid al-Din about three weeks ago, and you've just made an edit to Moinuddin querying the category I put there. As you may have realised this all arises from a programme of disambiguation on a set of muslim names which is effectively indexed at ad-Din. I appreciate your interest and expertise in dab pages, and I would value your opinion on the structures I've been creating, but could I ask you to discuss it properly on talk pages, rather than just terse sentences in edit summaries. I'm moving towards the end of what I set out to do, so this is a good time for me to review it all. I want above all to have something there which is accurate, comprehensive and user-friendly, and also to fit in with wikipedia policy and guidelines (bearing in mind that WP:IAR is one of them). We did disucss this, and although I didn't agree with you, I let it go as I respected your work and could see what you were trying to achieve. All I did to Moinuddin was basically ask for a second opinion, as it's an unusual page. Does it deserve its unreferenced tag as it's a dab, or is it a mixture and so should have references? I don't see that 'Is this hndis?' is a terse edit summary either; I wasn't even expressing the opinion that it was wrong. I don't see that this edit was a problem, if you've looked at the page and think the category's fine and the refs tag's fine, then just remove the cu tag. Should we remove?[edit]

Hi, Boleyn. You see that there are still no citations included with the article, 2005–06 in Australian soccer. That's because I can't find any deaths or retirements in 2005 to 2006 in Australian soccer which should include those references.

I can probably understand why these pages were not yet created after about 12 years since 2005. I think we should just include the template of speedy deletion, because there are still no citations I can find. Or you could have a try at looking for some.

As I wrote to you, you are creating articles which do not list any clear sources, e.g. [1]. This, as a biography of a living person, should have inline citations, see WP:INLINECITE if you're unsure how to. All it has are 'external links' which means 'suggestions for further reading' but does not tell us what your sources were. If that was your source, you just need to change the heading from 'external links' to 'References' or 'Sources' and the main problem is solved, and it would take only a few more seconds to make these inline citations. The way you have been writing them has not been making the sources clear. If you understand this, please comment at the ANI that you understand this, will do it in future and will respond to messages in future. You have not added references - e.g. look at The Family Man (1979 film), it has a references section, and it is empty. It has 'external links' which just means 'suggestions for further reading, which may or may not have been used to source the article.' The external link in question is to imdb, which is specifically banned at WP:RELIABLESOURCES. Please see Help:Referencing for beginners and ask if you are still unsure. Hi Boleyn - from time to time, I sometimes add something to Wikipedia when I note that there is not a lemma on the subject where I am looking for - with regard to Valsain, I cannot follow your comments as it does not differ that much from other wikipedia pages on Spanish villages like Mojacar. I have added a source for the inhabitants. With regard to the palace, most of the knowledge comes from the articles which I have added in the bibliography. For other lemmas, I know these places exists like the Podgorica Royal Palace and you can find texts about these places in travel guides and such, but I do not have detailed monographies on them, I just made the lemma as a start because I was looking for it and hopefully other people can also help extending Ipflo —Preceding undated comment added 20:50, 24 July 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks for replying. There are other pages without references, but that doesn't mean we should create more - WP:OTHERSTUFFEXISTS but we should look to the guidelines, WP:V and the essay WP:BURDEN. Hello Boleyn, thank you for your work reviewing New Pages!

June backlog drive

Overall the June backlog drive was a success, reducing the last 3,000 or so to below 500. However, as expected, 90% of the patrolling was done by less than 10% of reviewers.
Since the drive closed, the backlog has begun to rise sharply again and is back up to nearly 1,400 already. Please help reduce this total and keep it from raising further by reviewing some articles each day.

New technology, new rules

New features are shortly going to be added to the Special:NewPagesFeed which include a list of drafts for review, OTRS flags for COPYVIO, and more granular filter preferences. More details can be found at this page.
Probationary permissions: Now that PERM has been configured to allow expiry dates to all minor user rights, new NPR flag holders may sometimes be limited in the first instance to 6 months during which their work will be assessed for both quality and quantity of their reviews. This will allow admins to accord the right in borderline cases rather than make a flat out rejection.
Current reviewers who have had the flag for longer than 6 months but have not used the permissions since they were granted will have the flag removed, but may still request to have it granted again in the future, subject to the same probationary period, if they wish to become an active reviewer.

Editathons

Editathons will continue through August. Please be gentle with new pages that obviously come from good faith participants, especially articles from developing economies and ones about female subjects. Consider using the 'move to draft' tool rather than bluntly tagging articles that may have potential but which cannot yet reside in mainspace.

Hi Boleyn. In Special:Diff/810849571 you added {{inline}} and {{blpunsourced}}, but these two maintenance templates can never be used concurrently. In this case, neither of them applied, as the article had 1 gen ref. I applied {{BLP sources}} out of old habit, only to discover that we recently had {{BLP one source}} added to our {{Citation and verifiability article maintenance templates}}. They can be, but often aren't, they are suggestions for further reading, a useful link...but WP:EL is clear that sources should be in a sources or references section, and if it is also helpful to have an External Links section, that comes separately. Can you provide some discussion or diffs that show that the notable people section iin locality articles is intended to include groups of people rather than individually notable people, per your edit summary claim? People is a plural term, there's no reason it can't include a band. It would be less worth including if just one person from the band was from Dingle, but in this case they are a Dingle band. There are no big discussions on this topic because it's not really important enough to warrant a big discussion and in this particular case, with such a short list, there isn't any big incentive to cut it down. Charles Holcroft[edit]

I note that you recently reverted a redirect I'd made, but that leaves behind a dab page with only 2 links ... or, rather, one redlink and one name without evidence of notability (in the Wikipedia sense) at Charles Holcroft. In this case, Holcroft baronets already discusses both of those Charles's, so there seems no point in having in an intermediate dab page, particular while neither of them has a separate page - any reader interested in finding out more can only go to Holcroft baronets, and so it seems sensible to send them their directly. Hi, Klbrain. The redirect wouldn't make it clear that there are two potential people of the name. The dab makes it really clear that there are two, and how they differ. It also gives a redlink with about 3 incoming links, showing that Charles Holcroft is mentioned in several articles.
