One (Three Dog Night song) moved back to One (Harry Nilsson song)

I understand your rationale for changing the identifying artist. However, it is a well-established rule in Wikipedia (unsure if it's written or not) that when an artist's name is used to disambiguate a song title, the ORIGINAL artist must be used--even if the song is more strongly identified with another artist. A key example of this rule, ironically, is another song Harry Nilsson once recorded: "Without You" is listed in Wikipedia as Without You (Badfinger song) because it was originally recorded by Badfinger in 1970 (a year before Nilsson), even though both the Nilsson and Mariah Carey versions are better known than Badfinger's. --RBBrittain (talk) 02:20, 19 November 2012 (UTC)

Another good example (though a slightly different situation): The Whitney Houston classic "Greatest Love of All" is listed under "The Greatest Love of All", its original title as recorded by George Benson for the 1977 Muhammad Ali biopic The Greatest -- even though the article itself barely mentions Benson's all-but-forgotten original version. --RBBrittain (talk) 02:30, 19 November 2012 (UTC)

In response to your comment on my talk page: Redirects are in place; links to "One (Three Dog Night song)" will continue to work. Search engines use the text of the article, not its title; they will find the article either way. (They do that with "Without You" even though far more people associate it with either Nilsson or Mariah than Badfinger.) The issue is one of primacy within Wikipedia; though your thinking is understandable, other Wikipedians think differently--especially those who write reality-show articles here. "Without You" is a regular in those competitions; even though most of the contestants were inspired by Mariah and may not even be aware of Nilsson's version, much less Badfinger's, Wikipedia rules for American Idol-related articles routinely ask for the song's original artist, i.e., Badfinger. (However, that can vary; I recently found artist names are normally NOT used in The X Factor-related articles, a rule that began with the UK version and has carried over to the U.S. version.) You say you've seen examples of the best-known artist being used to disambig, but you didn't provide any; I provided a specific example (plus an indirect one) for using the original artist. What are your examples? Meanwhile, I'll do a little more research when I have the time to find the actual rules; though from my experience original versions tend to prevail (i.e., Gone with the Wind favors book over movie), inconsistencies are common (i.e., From Here to Eternity favors movie over book). --RBBrittain (talk) 17:49, 19 November 2012 (UTC)

I haven't found a hard-and-fast rule, but the criteria for cover versions in WP:SONG implies the original recording is normally considered primary, which favors my reversion. There's also a post on my own talk page that provides a solid rationale for using the original artist: "Most famous" is opinion and thus arguable (Nilsson vs. Mariah on "Without You"? The Zutons vs. Mark Ronson f/ Amy Winehouse on "Valerie"?), but "original artist" (Badfinger for "Without You", The Zutons for "Valerie") is a solid fact. OTOH, I also see you moved "Joy to the World (Hoyt Axton song)" to "Joy to the World (Three Dog Night song)", but IMO that *was* appropriate: Though Hoyt Axton did write the song, Three Dog Night appears to be its original artist. (Axton did have an album by that name in 1971, but the song first appeared on a Three Dog Night album in late 1970.) --RBBrittain (talk) 23:57, 21 November 2012 (UTC)

I see you added many info that could only be obtained from complete box scores and/or game stories from beat writers.
