NPOV

NPOV does not require we represent all viewpoints but rather that we give equal weight to the representation of views in the literature. The vast majority of the literature regards him as a dictator. Further per WP:UNDUE and WP:FRINGE we do not necessarily have to represent minority viewpoints such as the ones you espoused. Regards, Justin talk 16:04, 28 September 2009 (UTC)

Religion + beginning of the world

Essentially, your question evokes a certain innocence in the reader's perception of the questioner, and so, I will attempt to answer you in kind. Those religions which are divine in origin will not have to contrive a response, those that are man-made will -- and I say that omnisciently, not to be derisive of one religion or another. The fact that someone devised a "religion" many years ago without information about the future means that, intrinsically, compromises and absurd contrivances will be necessarily generated by the clergy and their writings to respond to such challenges. A religion of divine origin will not be plagued by inconsistencies, because such a religion is of the same source as science. This is, of course, assuming that there is a God who has made his will known to at least some humans to at least some extent.

In the hopes of keeping this NPOV, I will make no derisive mention of any religion -- I will speak only about the religion to which I adhere and to which I claim is of divine origin: Judaism. Judaism, claiming to be of completely divine origin, either directly or indirectly (in that those who propogate the religion are said to have mandates of Heaven), poses no contradictions with any science. Any previously asserted claims that have since been proven incorrect by science were no more Jewish than they were just claims of the time -- so, for example, when the Talmud makes mention of various medical treatments such as bloodletting, it was the view of the scientists of the time that bloodletting was beneficial, and the Jewish scholars and sages of the time were merely parroting those assertions. Creation, evolution, natural selection and God's direction and supervision of these and many other aspects of the natural world are all supported by Judaism with no contrivance and no inconsistency. Hands of Perón

I thank you for your clarification of the idea of the cult on the talk page of Hands of Perón. I'm wondering, though, if the perception of Perón as a cult figure in a religious sense may have varied depending on class. I ask because after editing that article to be compliant, I mentioned it to one of my neighbours who, it turns out, grew up in Argentina - her family was very poor, and she remembers that they did regard Perón in a religious manner. His photo was on the wall beside Eva's and they actually prayed for his intercession when times were tough. She said this was quite normal back then in their community. She left Argentina in the early 1980s but returned recently and Eva's photo is still there on her parents' wall, but Juan's is long gone.

Now this is not the kind of stuff that can go into the article because it's original research, but it did leave me with the strong impression that Perón was much more than just a political leader to at least some Argentinians. Now that I'm at your talk page

I've copyedited the article for Joaquín del Pino, but there are some things I couldn't understand. My main questions are:

  1. He joined a regiment in Oran. Which Oran is this? One in Spain, or the well-known city in Algeria?
  2. What does the "shrink" mean in "Maria Ignacia shrink Rameri"?
  3. "to replace the foreign ships, which prohibited land, temporarily ending the export of raw hides common to that time" What does "prohibited land" mean? I think the article is trying to say that del Pino opened a shipyard because there weren't enough ships around to expand the trade in raw hides, but I'm not sure.
  4. Who designed the convent church in San Lorenzo? Bautista or del Pino?
  5. The article says that del Pino appointed Antonio Amar as his successor, but our article on the viceroyalty says it was José Fernando Abascal y Sousa, Marquess of Concordia.
  6. The war between Spain and Portugal in 1801 is called the War of the Oranges in English. Is this the war del Pino tried to use as an excuse for his incursion? Who claimed the territory he invaded, anyway? Paraguay?
  7. I've changed "America" to either "South America" or "the Americas", since "America" in English is usually taken to mean "the United States". Is that a problem?

Joaquín del Pino Sánchez de Rojas Romero y Negrete (Baena (Córdoba), January 20 1729 - Buenos Aires, April 11 1804) was a Spanish military engineer and politician who held various positions in the South American colonial administration. As Viceroy of the Río de la Plata, he was the head of state of what is now Argentina.

Biography

At age 18, del Pino enlisted as a cadet in a regiment located in Oran. He studied mathematics and in February of 1752 he was transferred to the Corps of Engineers. He conducted a survey of the area around Ampurdán in order to better map fortifications and roads. In 1753 he was put in charge of the fortifications of the castle of Montjuïc in Barcelona. He remained at Montjuïc until 1760 and was promoted to captain in 1762, and assisted in the repairs of the shore batteries of Castile in the war with Portugal. The following year he married Maria Ignacia Rameri from San Sebastian. In 1769 he returned to cartographic work, working with the French to create military maps of Aldudes, between Navarre and France. Promoted to lieutenant colonel in 1770, he was sent to Montevideo at the request of Juan Jose de Vertiz y Salcedo in 1771 to repair the ramparts of the citadel. He remained in the Americas until his death.

Del Pino held numerous positions in the Americas. He was governor of Montevideo from 1773 to 1790, president of the Audiencia of Chile between 1790 and 1795, and president of the Audiencia of Charcas from 1795 to 1799. He was then entrusted with the Government of Chile, serving from 1799 to 1801. In the latter year, by a certificate issued on 14 July 1800 in Madrid, he was appointed viceroy of the Río de la Plata, assuming the office on 20 May.

He was considered an enlightened ruler who carried out numerous public works, including expansion of the port of Buenos Aires and construction of the Buenos Aires Recova, which was entrusted to Juan Bautista Sigismund, who also designed the convent church in San Lorenzo. His administration promoted the construction of brick kilns and the building of shipyards in Corrientes and Assumption. Del Pino also put restrictions on the movement of foreigners as a check against the establishment of republican ideas engendered by the French Revolution, and closed the first newspaper published in Buenos Aires, The Telegraph Commercial (1801).

In 1801 del Pino appointed Santiago de Liniers as governor of Misiones Province. He also tried to take advantage of the War of the Oranges to regain the Seven Peoples Missions East area, but he failed to provide the necessary supplies. This led to his removal from office on July 6, 1802; he named Antonio Amar as his successor, but the transfer of power did not take place.

Del Pino fell ill in April 1804 and died ten days later at the age of 70; he was succeeded by Rafael de Sobremonte. A few years later his daughter Juana del Pino was married to Bernardino Rivadavia, the future president of Argentina.

On May Revolution article

Compatriota, no quise asumir anteriormente la responsabilidad de evaluar el artículo sobre la Revolución de Mayo dado que no tengo el tiempo para dedicarle la atención que merece (mientras mantengo "on-hold" a tutti quanti, si no entendí mal el procedimiento), y tampoco estoy en condiciones de dedicarme ahora mismo.

Ahora bien, si hay algo que ya se me había ocurrido desde que ví el pedido de evaluación (además de los detalles lingüísticos) es el tema de el largo del artículo.

¿No será mejor dividirlo en segmentos, tal vez, y dejar resúmenes más breves de las distintas secciones?

(Dejame decirte que admiro tu dedicación y profesionalismo en lo que hace a esta serie de artículos, por cierto)

Imaginaba que la mano venía por el bicentenario (y eso me da mas ganas de ayudar con lo que esté a mi alcance). En fin, iré viendo por dónde puedo meterle alguna mano (algo que no sea fundamentalmente de repaso lingüístico que, aunque soy muy audaz con el inglés, lo mío es sólo eso y no me confío tampoco demasiado de mi intuición :P).
Ahora, en cuanto al largo del artículo te lo decía precisamente por el tema de los criterios de evaluación para GA y FA. ¡Ojo que el peso excesivo (y este se pasa varias veces del límite recomend) está repetidamente desaconsejado, y definitivamente es causal de descalificación para las categorías más altas. La sugerencia en el manual de estilo, que no me parece del todo mal, es resumir lo que se pueda desarrollar en subartículos (particularmente creo que la Semana de Mayo y el excelente trabajo sobre las causas internas y externas de la revolución pueden resumirse).
¡Ojo que no te falle la nominación por exceso de trabajo! ¿Conocés algún admin o veterano de aquí que pueda hacer recomendaciones en ese sentido? Quizá no estaría de más consultar sobre el formato más apropiado para las calificación.

Defamation of fringe topics

Hello,

I find this topic rather interesting as we agree it is important that Wikipedia itself does not become the validating source for non-significant subjects. This should apply either way don't you think? I've posted a blurp on the talk page if you want to debate. It seems to me judging things has become the rule rather than the exception.

May Revolution redux

Hi "Manuel,"

I saw your efforts to get the May Revolution article accepted for good article status. It is a very long article and will take a while to rework, but I offer you here on my talk page a potential draft of the opening with comments hidden in the mark-up text. I've tried to stay true to your intentions, and consulted the original Spanish-language article which seems to have served as the basis, while trying to aim it to an average English-language reader who might not have much background in Latin American history. If you accept, I can take stabs at bits of the article from time to time. (I think you were aiming to have it ready for the bicentenary of the May Revolution this year.)

A few other suggestions, if I may, for the rest of the text. I would try to keep the Wikilinks to a minimum. I do agree with the suggestion that too much blue text is distracting, although, this is not always possible with a topic like this, which may be greatly unknown to many readers. With that in mind I would question whether every linked article in the Spanish version needs to be recreated in English. For example, do we really need a separate article for the "Syllogism of Chuquisaca," the "Bayonne Abdications" and for every historian mentioned in the article? Couldn't the Syllogism be perfectly well explained in the text and in the Bolivian War of Independence and the Chuquisaca Revolution articles? (Charles W. Arnade, whose book I consulted for the former article, gives a good summary of it in about two pages.) I would try to keep these tangental articles to a minimum, because unless they are going to be fully developed, stubs are just distracting for the reader and don't provide additional knowledge.

The other thing I suggest is that the English-language literature on the independence of Argentina needs to be consulted. This is not my specialty, so I'm not too familiar with it, but I do know that the English-language encyclopedia article should reference it and summarize the state of the English-language scholarship, while bringing in the Spanish-language (or any other) scholarship, where needed. I don't know where you are editing from, so I don't know how difficult this would be. It's also useful to figure out how historians talk about these events in English, when they keep terms in Spanish and when they translate, for example. Wikipedia, I've noticed, seems to breed neologisms a lot, something which I feel an encyclopedia should not do. Well, let me know. Cordialmente, TriniMuñoz (talk) 00:53, 19 February 2010 (UTC)

Argentina Portal

I know you are doing good work on Argentina-related articles. I'd like to talk about the lack of Argentina editors. We used to have many and they have faded years ago. I'd like to remind people to become a member of WikiProject Argentina and contribute there to coordinate efforts. Also to remind people to add your contributions to the Argentina-related regional notice board so we can all be informed of new pages or major article rebuilds. Now, to get to the main point of this message. Years ago the Argentina Portal was neglected for lack of maintainers. I became the de-facto main (and sole) editor in 2008 and have been adding news and contributions to the article/image of the month features ever since. I requested some collaboration at the time but nobody came forward. That is fine. I am not asking for contributions and I plan to keep on maintaining the site. I feel it is important to show a good image of Argentina to the en.WP community and to the English-speaking world at large. Hence the interest in having a good-looking, properly maintained portal. What I am asking for is a second set of eyes to look at it, comment and criticize, and to suggest good articles/images for the monthly feature. I know we are all busy with our own projects in Wikipedia. I am not asking for edits, just for suggestions when you come across a good article or image. Let me know by Talk message or email, and I will do the work of posting it (hint: I post article/image of the month way in advance to ease the load). I would like to get the Argentina Portal to Featured Portal status, but it is not easy to do without some help. At least C&C. Platine War GA review

You have turned down the possibility of making the article Platine War a good one without even giving a chance for all the editors who have worked hard in it to give any kind of comment. That was an unfair move of your part.

First you tried to make Rosas, who is and was considered a dictator, a simple governor when reality was quite different. Fidel Castro and his brother Raul are officialy "Presidents" of Cuba but no one doubt that they are dictators. Second, in your review, as I pointed out before, you gave no chance for any of us to try to improve the article or change whatever was wrong. Of course, it is more than clear that you, as an Argentine, did not like the article itself for your own reasons and not because you saw true issues as an impartial reviewer. It is true that we must believe that everyone in here are acting on good faith but you behavior was clearly unfair and wrong. --Lecen (talk) 05:45, 26 February 2010 (UTC)

US interference in Argentina

I've reverted your removal from the Argentina talk page. There is at least the possibility of this to be true to some extent - for starters the CIA have admitted to interfering before the 1973 coup in Chile and they've also interfered in Cuba. The comment hasn't been edited but removed, I haven't made it seem as if you said something you didn't say. Talking about a "silly season" is entirely your own action, and even more if you restore it after learning that other users find it aggresive. By the way, such post fails Wikipedia:Canvassing, as it is a biased message (it disregards other users as "silly", and presents a historical topic as a "work of fiction", preparing readers to be against it), and perhaps it's votestacking as well (you noticed the islander group group, but not the Wikiproject Argentina) MBelgrano (talk) 13:15, 26 March 2010 (UTC)

To treat other editors as "silly" is not acceptable, regardless of good or bad faith in the comment. Would you like it if someone else calls you "silly", or some broad group of users including you? No, right? But I don't think it's needed to report anything, simply rewrite the post using more friendly words and that's it. The problem remains the same, the mere existence of a "silly season" in some countries does not mean that treating a specific news or event as part of it isn't derogatory, specially when you don't talk a far and remote media star but about someone you are interacting with. You surely wouldn't like it either if I described any action you may be involved in as "La era de la boludez", and if such a thing happens, you wouldn't accept a link to the album by Divididos as an explanation of what was meant by that.
Even more, I remind you that that "season" is, at least under that name, a local phenomenon from some countries, and it doesn't exist in Argentina, so it's to be expected that users from Argentina may react to the mere words themselves. In any case, if you are really acting in good faith and didn't pretend to insult anyone, you can simply remove that part of the comment, which isn't even related to the main topic you wanted to adress (point out the existence of an AFD). Just that, and everything would end there. It's hard to asume good faith when, after finding out that at least 2 users do not like the comment (including a member of that project), you insist in keeping it anyway.

Chilean battles...

Hi! Quick one for you, given our mutual interest in the Platine war...

I did some work a while back going through and translating (or mis-translating - I can only translate from Spanish very slowly!) various articles on Chilean battles during the independence period, using the Spanish wikipedia as a basis ((see Battle of El Roble, Battle of San Carlos (1813), First Battle of Talca, Battle of El Quilo, Battle of Membrillar, First Battle of Cancha Rayada, Battle of Quechereguas, Battle of Las Tres Acequias and Siege of Chillan). One of the problems I had was that the Spanish wiki is a little weak on sources/references - there weren't any for the articles concerned. I know they're Chilean rather than Argentinian, and of course free to say "no", but if you've access to any Spanish langugage references for them, they badly need some basic help with the citations. English language sources are pretty poor for the independence conflicts, I'm afraid, particularly in the south.

Review of William Tiger Dunlop

Hi there MBelgrano. Thanks for the review. As you've said, you don't know William "Tiger" Dunlop. But you have been rather insightful whether it was by design or circumstance. So I will address your comments. Article Name: William "Tiger" Dunlop is actually how this man is known. I can cite some current correspondence between southern Ontario librarians or correspondence contemporaneous to him to support this. Lead: You're right about the enumeration quality. I will work on this. Image: Without obtaining copyright rights from the National Library of Canada, this is the best of the images available to me.

Extension: This is where you hit the nail on the head. There is no reason to spend much time on Dunlop's time in parliament. Authoritative sources tell us that Dunlop was known for his humorous speeches and friendliness, and not much else. The point in him becoming a Member of Parliament was to stop Bishop Strachan from becoming the sitting member. The two ran against each other; the Bishop fixed the results and after Dunlop challenged, Dunlop won and became the sitting member. This is really a battle of good versus evil with Dunlop as a Canadian Robin Hood and the Bishop as the bad sheriff. Notwithstanding Dunlop employment with the Canada Company, the Bishop represents the interests of the Canada Company and the Family Compact. Dunlop respresents the interests of the settlers--some well-off, some not. The Canada Company had a habit of robbing the settlers and then selling back to them that which belonged to them in the first place. Dunlop was able to keep the feud under control with his sense of humor, oratory abilities, and his ability to keep the real objective in mind. The objective was to have Canada populated by British immigrants; something which would not happen if the Bishop et. al. continued to rule to the province. Having said all this, you may ask why this isn't in the article. Mainstream Canadian history describes the Bishop in terms of his religious duties thus rehabilitating him; it does not concentrate on his political and social aspirations. My thoughts above are confirmed by a few academic thesis and the literature of Upper Canada, but would be challenged by the current historical paradigm. I believe it is more important to raise Dunlop to the place he deserves in Canadian history, than to engage in a useless battle of historical revisionism.

Words to avoid: I think after reading the above you will understand why I used those words. They are the words that may cause someone with an interest in the subject to enquire further.

History of Argentina

Hi! I'm not spending too much time here in WP these times, so I'll ask you for a favor. In the aformentioned article, there's a serious NPOV editor problem since Revolution on '43 section on. And it only gets worse as the article goes on, until the Kirchners period. I've just reversed some of the most flagrant cases, but the article would probably need of some more re-reading. Sorry for the delay to answer, I wanted to finish one of the articles I have been working with to nominate it for DYK. I'm aware of the problems in that article, but it's huge scope usually make me leave it for later. I have to summarize the information, and I'm not very good at it yet, as I have to find the balance between either leaving information at the specific articles and yet keep the summary possible to be understood on its own, and without the missing details making it misleading or incorrect. It's a mess, so I usually prefer to work at more specific articles where I can simply write everything there is to write. Besides, the "stories of steeds and steels" have that epic feeling that can't be find with modern politics, so I'm not as well informed about XX century Argentina than about XIX century (except from Menem and afterwards, as that part I had live it myself). But you are right, it's an article of top importance, and it should at least be free of major problem templates. It should be featured, but first things first... I've been doing some more work there, but it is herculean in scope, as you said. Nonetheless, it can be more easily tackled by linking some more major articles into the sections and copypasting some well-sourced sentences so as to summarize the most important topics. You could suppose that the link you removed was not the greatest source in the world, but calling it "refspam" is hardly to the point (the information in the article was correct, for instance); if anything, the serious nature of the edit and the content of the article in the reference should encourage you to look for better sources. In this case, with some 200 edits between the addition of the source and your removal of it, a quick glance at the article and its history would have shown that placing a "fact" tag is not the most appropriate action. That's correct, but only for links within a same project. Interwikis to other projects must point to written articles, not to the name the article may have someday when it's finally written. See Help:Interlanguage links#Links to pages that do not exist for the reasons. Anyway, if I hadn't noticed that the article did not exist at that time, a bot (an automated software that works around the project) would have noticed it sooner or later, and do the same. I'm afraid I don't have much knowledge about the topic, I checked the article before they started to cut it, and the only detail I could point was when Matheu was incorrectly reported as a criollo. Hi, I have some links with results of searchs I have ran in google books, but I only have some vistas previas and some quotations where the phrases "argentinos blancos" or "white argentines" appear in those books. I want to share those links with you, but Andy the Grump is keeping track of every move I make in WP. I asked for help in the talk page of the Wikiproject of Ethnic groups, and he added a comment warning of the "serious breaches in WP's policy" that I have commited. He also discredits beforehand a book -which I already bought and I'm still waiting to receive- that might help me referentiate the article. Hola gente: Dadas las recientes y actuales guerras de ediciones que se han desatado en los artículos White Argentine, White Mexican, White Latin American y otros similares, debido a la modificación de la ´política sobre biografía de personas vivas concerniente a etnicidad -que los usuarios Andy the Grump y GiovBag quieren implementar a rajatabla en todos los artículos- propongo:

Solicitar en el Noticeboard correspondiente -aún no sé cuál sería, pero seguro que hay uno- que se revean los alcances de tal política. Creo que todos estaremos de acuerdo que nadie podría afirmar "Ronald Reagan era un Afro-estadounidense" porque tal afirmación salta a la vista como falsa. O también que nadie podría afirmar "Juan Manuel Fangio era de ascendencia croata" cuando es bien sabido que sus padres eran italianos. Pero creo que debe ser revisado que no se pueda categorizar a una persona como "blanco" cuando esté bien referenciada su ascendencia europea y comprobado con una fotografía su fenotipo caucásico.

One Above All

Hey. I'm really sorry, but, please, could you at all reconsider your placing of the Deletion tag on the One Above All article, please? I don't even understand how you knew about it in the first place, as most of your edits do not seem to be focused on comics. Why do you think that just because one user does not like a certain character, that we should all delete it? Please, is nominating articles for deletion all you do on Wikipedia? Can't you do a lot more for Wikipedia through other means as well? No one else wanted to delete this article for five years, and because of a single user's views, it is being considered for deletion? Maybe put an original research tag, but outright delete it all of sudden? Would that really satisfy you? I truly do not think this article merits deletion. Actually, if I remember well, this must be just the second time I nominate an article for deletion. As it was pointed, I'm not nominating it by just my own initiative, there was a discussion about the article at the Comics wikiproject discussing the article. And yes, first I included tags about the problems and added the topic to the talk page, without bringing deletion into the options. They were removed, without fixing anything, using an edit summary that said "fixing minor errors (spelling and grammar)" (as to avoid others from checking it and noticing that) and my comments were simply removed MBelgrano (talk) 01:23, 2 February 2011 (UTC)

But if the community or the hundreds of users viewing the article saw there was so huge of a problem with it, they would have themselves quickly nominated the article for deletion. But no one else, for whatever reason, has. Are you sure you want to be the first to do so? No one can force you to do anything at all here, but does erasing years of edits by perhaps hundreds of editors mean nothing at all to you? Please, you can of course by all means either continue this discussion or end it, but, please, I truly do not want it to be deleted. I mean, lots of people have viewed it for the last few years, and still do everyday, just like me, and we do find the article meaningful, to both us and Marvel. Surely we can reach some better compromise than this? I truly don't want to argue anymore over this, but I ask you, please, to let this one article pass... I just really don't think it's worth our time to continue with this. Do you really still feel the need to have to delete it, just like that, or can we please, just for this one character, leave the article as is? I mean, do you seriously want to continue debating this issue for days, if not weeks, taking up all our time on Wikipedia? Because I really don't. Please, could you at least think about removing your tag and finishing this discussion? This site is invaded by intelectualoid scum (Andy the Grump, GiovBag, etc.) so I'll move for greener pastures. Battle of Martín García (1814) and Project Military History

I have noticed (not for the first time), there is very little input into the Project Military History from our side. Of our battles (Independence and Civil War) one of the best articles we have to offer is Battle of Martín García (1814). Somebody (don't know who) had reviewed it and found it lacking. I did most of the translation from es:wp. I'd love to hear your input and see what we can do to get more of South American military history into a more prominent display at MilHist.
