EEng and the guy with the iron rod through his head

First off, on the WP:CITEVAR bit, my point is that hyphens are mandated by some style guides (that's the "example" link that I gave, to a Purdue University page discussing The MLA Style Manual), and the paragraph above CITEVAR notes that we don't require a specific standard, EEng isn't bound to use a specific style guide. Seeing that he was using hyphenation for pagination, changing hyphens to dashes is not only unusual and unhelpful, but it actively takes the article away from its current citation style, so this kind of change is at variance with CITEVAR.

Your comments about the content of the article are a completely different matter. If he's frequently adding material at variance with the sources, that's a problem, but I offered no comment on that matter because I wasn't looking into such an issue. If it were mentioned at WP:ANI and I missed it, I apologise. I understood the discussion to mean that he wrote one or more high-quality scholarly publications on this guy, and that he's a leading scholar on this topic. If such be the case, it would be highly inappropriate if we intentionally didn't rely heavily on his work (see footnote), and there's absolutely nothing wrong with relying on it heavily. Of course I understand that I might be misunderstanding the situation, so please explain where I'm wrong if I am.

Footnote: I'm talking about a situation in which editors are aware of a leading scholar in the field, but they actively decide to ignore him, or someone else comes in and adds something about this scholar, and other people remove it because of whose work it is. I understand that we often ignore scholars because we're not aware of them; that's simply ignorance, a completely different matter. Nyttend (talk) 21:09, 28 August 2014 (UTC)

@Nyttend: changing a {{Hyp}} to a physical hyphen for that issue is not a Citevar issue at all. Using a template causes an error where the code itself or literal will not. That was the reason BGwhite did that. There was no effective change in rendering on the page, but instead it prevented an issue that arises from templates within Cite templates. That's my understanding of that issue. So I really do not see how "do not do this" and fixing it causes a "citevar issue" when switching the reference structure to Harvard, Templates or some other method is demonstrably an issue. Though I think that quibbling over it is a bit like splitting hairs, I was more concerned with the no ref related matters. ChrisGualtieri (talk) 23:55, 28 August 2014 (UTC)

Question about your edit

Hello CG. Re this edit. Do you think that the dubious notation should be added to the individual articles for those films? On the first one the "silent Era" ref even mentions that he probably wasn't in the film. The second film is a stub and only has one ref. I will leave it up to you as how to proceed. @MarnetteD: I am actually researching those films right now and I am certain that both films do not show Chaney. I am still evaluating my materials and checking things out, but that citation on The Honor of the Family Blake is invalid. The book makes no mention of that film in its text from what I've seen. It is a more complex matter for the second film however, but the history of that film is pretty clear. The Ways of Fate is only credited by a few sources and it seems extremely unlikely to feature Chaney because of its production details. We would be looking for a film produced pre-September 1912, if anything, and The Ways of Fate was later. I'm still missing some details, but I am certain it's dubious and those films will be fixed later on. I think I'll be adding some more "dubious" tags to films in that era. I started on three simple films unrelated to Chaney, Who's Your Neighbor?, A 44-Calibre Mystery and The Immortal Alamo. Of the three, 44-Calibre was the most confusing I've researched and I've dug up new information on the Immortal Alamo that I've not seen referenced elsewhere. I need to cut my teeth on a few more things before I am certain enough to add the details in full. ChrisGualtieri (talk) 17:32, 29 August 2014 (UTC)

You probably have already seen it but, on the off chance that you haven't, the documentary that accompanies this DVD set is very well done. @MarnetteD: Thanks, I'll make sure to notify you when I post the information up. I just need a good few days to go through and double check everything. I have seen that documentary and it is indeed very good. Though in terms of nuance, it does state his first films were through Nestor and indicates this was after his wife's suicide attempt, but the book indicates that it is technically possible that a film could have been made earlier. I've dug up some clever references. I was quite annoyed when I read the Chaney page because of all its errors and assumptions. I couldn't let them just go undisputed because credible sources disagree and on far better grounds. Chaney is perhaps one of the most important actors of all time, shame the Wikipedia page is horrendous. So I am out to fix it up a little. ChrisGualtieri (talk)

WikiCup 2014 August newsletter

The final of the 2014 WikiCup begins in a few short minutes! Our eight finalists are listed below, along with their placement in Round 4:

1. Godot13 (submissions), a WikiCup newcomer, finished top of Pool A and was the round's highest scorer. Godot is a featured picture specialist, claiming large numbers of points due to high-quality scans of historical documents, especially banknotes.
2. Casliber (submissions) is a WikiCup veteran, having been a finalist every year since 2010. In the semi-final, he was Pool B's highest scorer. Cas's points primarily come from articles on the natural sciences.
3. Czar (submissions) was Pool A's runner-up. Czar's points come mostly from content related to independent video games, including both articles and topics.
4. Adam Cuerden (submissions) was Pool B's runner-up. Another featured picture specialist, many of Adam's points come from the restoration of historical media. He has been a WikiCup finalist twice before.
5. Cwmhiraeth (submissions) won the WikiCup in 2012 and 2013, and enters this final as the first wildcard. She focuses on biology-related articles, and has worked on several high-importance articles.
6. 12george1 (submissions) is the second wildcard. George's points come primarily from meteorology-related articles. This year and last year, George was the first person in the competition to score.
7. Sturmvogel 66 (submissions), the third wildcard, was the 2010 champion and a finalist last year. His writes mostly on military history, especially naval history.
8. Bloom6132 (submissions), the fourth and final wildcard, has participated in previous WikiCups, but not reached any finals. Bloom's points are mostly thanks to did you knows, featured lists and good articles related to sport and national symbols.

We say goodbye to this year's semi-finalists. Matty.007 (submissions), ThaddeusB (submissions), WikiRedactor (submissions), Figureskatingfan (submissions), Yellow Evan (submissions), Prism (submissions) and Cloudz679 (submissions) have all performed well to reach this stage of the competition, and we hope they will all be joining us again next year.

There are two upcoming competitions unrelated to the WikiCup which may be of interest to those who receive this newsletter. The Stub Contest will run through September, and revolves around expanding stub articles, especially high-importance or old stubs. In addition, a proposal has been made for a new competition, the GA Cup, which the organisers plan to run next year. This competition is based on the WikiCup and aims to reduce the good article review backlog.

There is now a thread for brainstorming on how next year's WikiCup competition should work. Please come along and share your thoughts- What works? What doesn't work? What needs changing? Signups for next year's competition will be open soon; we will be in touch. If, at this stage of the competition, you are keen to help the with the WikiCup, please do what you can to participate in review processes. Our finalists will find things much easier if the backlogs at good article candidates, featured article candidates, featured picture candidates and the rest are kept at a minimum. I noticed WP:COIN#Phineas Gage. Strong claims need good links, so please check that you have the right links (the first is a diff of you removing something). I fixed the link to the section. Thanks. EEng will not dispute he added that section, because it was in a 50+ page discussion previously where it was established. Rather than show a collection of evolving wording and structure to the article with Wikiblame - I highlighted the section -specifically by my removal. EEng had also used the article as an attack on other scholars and a school. Though that is less relevant now. It was side discussions that ultimately lead to the issue going way off the rails. Sorry, @Johnuniq:, but I believe that EEng's years long work with Macmillan is the core matter. At the COI page, the quote from Davis shows that EEng has a special interest which warps the relationships of the page because EEng's relationship to the materials presentation, both his own citations and that of Macmillan. Thanks for the move

Hello CG. I have wanted Lon's article moved to that title for years but I never took the time to put in a request. Thanks for your work in getting it to the right title!! Something has gone awry with the talk page though. Talk:Lon Chaney now has the DAB Project Banner and nothing else. I left a note pn Philg88's talk page as well. Hopefully one of you can get things fixed. One of the threads on that talk page was a mention from 8 or 9 years ago pointing out that Sr. was never a part of his name. Cheers and enjoy your Sunday. I've actually been compiling a bunch of data on Lon Chaney and silent films - not much that Blake hasn't already well-covered, but I have found more data on the films themselves and fixed a few mistakes. WikiCup 2014 September newsletter

In one month's time, we will know our WikiCup 2014 champion. Newcomer Godot13 (submissions) has taken a strong lead with a featured list (historical coats of arms of the U.S. states from 1876) and a raft of featured pictures. Reigning champion Cwmhiraeth (submissions) is in second place with a number of high-importance biology articles, including new FA Isopoda and new GA least weasel. Casliber (submissions), who is in his fifth WikiCup final, is in third, with featured articles Pictor and Epacris impressa.

Signups for the 2015 WikiCup are open. All Wikipedians, new and experienced, are warmly invited to sign up for the competition. Wikipedians interested in friendly competition may also like to sign up for the GA Cup, a new WikiCup-inspired competition which revolves around completing good article reviews.
