Wikipedia as meditation, stress release, or temporary escape

[edit]

Hi Clovermoss, I was sorry to read about your loss[1]. Grief is not an easy emotion and we mourn our most beloved pets as family. The loss of their physical presence and support can be just as difficult, they are pillars in our lives. I see that you are worried about your related increased wikipedia editing and I wanted to take a minute to offer my thoughts in the spirit that they may be of some help to you... Many many people use volunteer labor as a way of healthily dealing with painful and stressful things in their lives, as long as you think that your increased editing isn't having a negative effect on anyone on wikipedia or on your wellbeing I think you're ok. Finding a way to channel these feelings (even that feeling of not wanting to feel feelings) into something constructive is important, I'm not saying that wikipedia has to be that thing for you or the only thing but if this is the thing thats super cool and I wouldn't feel bad about it. My condolences again, Horse Eye's Back (talk) 16:18, 2 August 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Well she literally died this morning so I don't know what my edit rate will even look like. There's some other factors in the near future that'd make the feasibility of a wikibreak more difficult even if I wished to take one. But everything is still very fresh. I'm just thinking about how I reacted when one of the relatives died last summer and I thought that I'd want to take a wikibreak but then I didn't really end up taking one and just ended up editing more. But there was also a time when I was really depressed and I didn't edit at all for a year. I can't tell the future so I'm just going to be mindful and see where that takes me. I archived my talk page because it felt like I was doing something. Out of sight and out of mind. On to the next thing. I'm not sure if that makes sense?
A lot of my life has been very difficult and I do genuinely try to work through things productively. To some extent it's because life goes on and you just have to. I try to be in tune with when I feel things and why I do the things that I do. Sometimes I worry that I'm too open about this, to be quite frank. But I just want people to see and understand me, y'know? See that my heart is in the right place and that I'm just someone trying to do their best to make a difference in a crappy world. Being able to be productive can sometimes help me process things. Sometimes I become a bit of a workaholic even. Distraction is one of the best healthy coping mechanisms I have. It's a fine line between that and avoidance but I'm sure I'll be fine with time. It's okay to hurt and to process things.
Anyways, my cat was taken to the vet because she wasn't feeling well. I was hoping it wouldn't be bad news but it was. An aggressive form of breast cancer that was spreading into her lungs. She would continue to suffer and things would escalate really quickly. So she was put down like the vet suggested. Clovermoss🍀 (talk) 16:31, 2 August 2024 (UTC)[reply]
I'm sorry, CM :-( Levivich (talk) 21:53, 2 August 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Just know that I'm here for you alright? I know your future right now is intense. I feel like we have a similar mindset. I really want people to understand that I'm trying to do the right thing, but it's always a pressing worry that they don't. Anyway I'll be quiet so that you can get back to distracting yourself, because I don't want you to have any more emotional burdens in your life right now. You know yourself better than I do, so do whatever you feel is right. The Night Watch (talk) 23:31, 2 August 2024 (UTC)[reply]
I appreciate all the support. But I wanted to reply directly to The Night Watch because I know you know that I see that you're always trying to do the right thing, even if you beat yourself up about mistakes. You're never a burden. Please take care of yourself, too. Clovermoss🍀 (talk) 23:34, 2 August 2024 (UTC)[reply]
It's true that I don't take care of myself as best as I should sometimes. I had a conversation today about how poorly I've been eating and how I'm now underweight. But I feel like you're sometimes too harsh on yourself, like how you've been feeling shaky right now. The responses here alone show that people appreciate you. I don't want you to worry about what's to come, or to drown yourself emotionally by listening to the sufferings of others. But if you really think I won't create more pressure I'll be here for you in private. The Night Watch (talk) 04:06, 3 August 2024 (UTC)[reply]
@The Night Watch: I didn't know about the lack of eating. That honestly makes me even more concerned for you. Please try to take care of yourself and maybe find out how to access additional mental health resources in your community? It can honestly make a world of difference. I worry about you and want you to be successful in your life. You can always reach out to be in private if you need to. I'm here for you. Clovermoss🍀 (talk) 04:13, 3 August 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Joe Chambers (museum creator)

Clovermoss

please help me out here. i can't take that much effort to hash out this issue. please note this article below, and let me know if i can use "(museum creator)". I would be REALLY HAPPY.

Margaret Anderson (museum creator)

this is the only accurate match to Joe's life work.

I am really frustrated to the max.

Thanks for your help. MikeMARS52 MikeMARS52 (talk) 23:50, 6 August 2024 (UTC)[reply]

@MikeMARS52: My advice from last time is still applicable. What you need to do is start a move request and gain consensus for the move. Only being able to find one example of another disambiguator like that is another factor pointing in the direction that it probably would not be moved. As I said, I've participated in these types of these discussions before and it's just not a likely result. I suppose you found the technical aspect of starting a move request confusing? I can start one on your behalf if that's what's giving you issues. I get that you're frustrated but sometimes it helps to let things go. I once wrote an article on someone who was known for multiple things: Katherine Hughes (activist). I don't have to move the page to say everything she was known for. The purpose of disambiguation is to be able to tell her apart from the other people with her name. Clovermoss🍀 (talk) 00:03, 7 August 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Clovermoss
Thanks very much for your reply. I would very gratefully accept your offer to start the move.
Just to make sure why I feel the need to use "museum founder" - it is not an issue of the multiple things done in his life.
Rather, the idea that became the Musicians Hall of Fame and Museum was imaged as television program to feature session musicians who routinely got no credit for their contributions. The tv show idea failed due to cameras that were too expensive, and Joe lacked skills to produce a tv show. see reference 6 in Joe's article time stamp 18:49. This morphed into forming a brick and mortar museum. I couldn't find a specific date for this, but i would guess 2 yr prior to actual purchase of a location in November 2003. The museum opened to the public on June 6, 2006. This was a significant museum and attracted a large number of visitors.
Furthermore, in 2010 the City of Nashville seized (through eminent domain) and “expropriated” the property of the museum. According to Robert K Oermann the author of Joe’s obituary in the MusicRow newsletter “did not offer him enough money to relocate it.” (see reference 5)
I suggest that many people would have given up after the seizure by the City of Nashville. But Joe didn’t, and kept on, showing his commitment to the museum.
Joe, with the help of his wife, built the museum again. The new and larger museum was opened to the public on August 29, 2013. Joe was the CEO and curator for the museum until his death in 2022.
Clearly, this endeavor was far more significant than his other successful ventures (producing hit records, writing hit songs, selling guitars).
The museum was Joe's career for more time than his other ventures, and with far more impact on the music world, than any of the other aspects of his lifetime careers.
When you initiate the attempt for consensus, please show all other editors that “museum founder” is by far the most accurate description of Joe Chambers’ contributions.
My goal is to do just as you said at the end of your reply “The purpose of disambiguation is to be able to tell her apart from the other people with her name” This disambiguation is what people will expect when looking for Joe in Wikipedia!!
Thanks in advance for your help with this issue. MikeMARS52 MikeMARS52 (talk) 16:58, 20 August 2024 (UTC)[reply]
I started a move discussion for you, see the talk page. Something I think I forgot to ask you beforehand (and should have) is whether or not you have a conflict of interest regarding Joe Chambers. Formal apology

[edit]

Hello Clovermoss. Based on what you posted today, and based on doing some looking on my own, I have definitely concluded that you cannot be the person whom I suspected of being that banned user. (I still think that person is the real-life identity of that banned user, but I now know that this person cannot possibly be you. A helluva series of coincidences.) I apologize when I make a mistake, and I've made a mistake. My stated suspicions were wrong, and I admit that they were wrong. I want anyone who harbored suspicions based on anything that I said, to drop those suspicions. I know that my suspicions caused you to have some very serious unhappiness, and I am genuinely sorry for having caused that. I hope that you can put the unhappiness that you felt behind you. Best wishes, --Tryptofish (talk) 21:22, 7 August 2024 (UTC)[reply]

I appreciate the apology. This conversation definitely left me frustrated. I had a generally good impression of you until that happened and it just felt fundamentally unfair. That there was nothing I could do to prove my innocence. It also happened to be the first time I openly connected my username to a photo of myself, so it hurt a bit to have that openness not be able to resolve your concerns and then to see people joke about it after the fact like it was no big deal. Hopefully this whole situation is a learning experience. I think we have a lot to lose when it comes to casual accusations of sockpuppetry on the part of other editors. Genuine bad actors aren't going to stop at anything to get their way and making things harder for people who are here in good faith drives them away. Question from Rectech enthusiast (06:22, 9 August 2024)

[edit]

Hello mentor,

Hope you doing well. I just wanted to get some advice from you, so I have been working on wiki for quite some time and recently my team raised a requirement to get our company published on wikipedia. Now I know it is important to declare myself as a part of the company if I am writing about it and also to write from a neutral perspective. Now it has been 7-8 years since the establishment of our company and I looked for citations too that will support the company article if I do write it (There aren't many independent sources, maybe 2 or 3. Rest are about the product that our SaaS is selling rn). Now the main struggle for me has been getting a new article approved. I am scared that Ill pour in all my efforts on this draft and then it will get rejected. Can you please guide me a little on the best way in which this can be done? I really believe I can rely on my mentor instead of the teahouse rn, I might get roasted there :_) --Rectech enthusiast (talk) 06:22, 9 August 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Hi Rectech enthusiast. I'd encourage you to read this page about what to do if your boss wants you to edit Wikipedia. You should also read this guide about contributing with a conflict of interest. The struggle in getting an article approved would be exactly because you don't have those independent sources available because Wikipedia has notability guidelines for when companies can be included. Essentially, if those sources don't exist, there's not much you can do. I'd encourage you to refocus your efforts elsewhere. Let me know if there's any topics you might be interested on working on as a volunteer editor, I could direct you to something that is notable and you can try to expand. Clovermoss🍀 (talk) 06:41, 9 August 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Hi there, Thank you for your suggestions. So RN there is like no pressure to make this page, it was a suggestion/task that anyone can take up. Since I was active here I thought of picking it up, now after reading the resources that you share Ill also share the same with our team. Ill ask the team to focus more on getting recognized by independent sources organically, it might be worth the wait. Thanks Again! Rectech enthusiast (talk) 07:18, 12 August 2024 (UTC)[reply]
@Rectech enthusiast: Waiting organically is realistically the only option even if that might suck from your employer's perspective. While I'm here, now is a good time to tell you that there is a scam where people will contact people who have declined or deleted articles. If you ever get contacted by these scammers, please follow the advice that is at that page. Clovermoss🍀 (talk) 07:31, 12 August 2024 (UTC)[reply]

[edit]

Is it possible to have edits that I made before creating an account have their creator changed from an IP to my account? --3aec04 (talk) 15:06, 10 August 2024 (UTC)[reply]

@3aec04: There is no way to do that, unfortunately. You could create your user page and say "I used to be an IP editor that made x edits" but I'd recommend against giving the specific IP address for privacy reasons. Clovermoss🍀 (talk) 15:20, 10 August 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Question from Jadney (21:36, 10 August 2024)

[edit]

I have managed to track down the owner of the photos and she has agreed to share them with a suitable CC license. Is this something I can do for her, or do I need to ask her to do it? --Jadney (talk) 21:36, 10 August 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Hi Jadney. I'm frankly not sure as I've never had someone ask me this before. I'm glad that my previous answer gave you some information about the process. I'm assuming you didn't email those folks and instead just got her to give you the licensing permission herself? If you did email them and they told you to do this, I'd ask them what the next steps are. Otherwise I'll ping Red-tailed hawk because they're also an admin on Wikimedia Commons and probably understand the nuances surrounding these things better than I do. Clovermoss🍀 (talk) 03:01, 12 August 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Hi! @Jadney: I would ask the owner to follow the instructions on Wikimedia Commons's VRT release generator. This should walk the individual through the process of getting the right people a copy of the copyright release, and also would ensure that the terms of the release are compatible with those that are acceptable on Wikimedia projects. If you have any questions, please feel free to follow up on my talk page. — Red-tailed hawk (nest) 03:11, 12 August 2024 (UTC)[reply]
I gave that advice the first time (see the above link). I'm guessing there isn't a way to do it yourself even with permission without going through that process? Clovermoss🍀 (talk) 21:08, 12 August 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Congratulations! A very well-deserved honour. Cremastra (talk) 17:26, 14 August 2024 (UTC)[reply]

@Cremastra: Thank you. I hope to write a Signpost essay about everything in the near future. Let's just say I had no idea that my first trip outside of North America would be to Poland to receive an award for my activities on Wikipedia. Younger me would've been incredibly shocked if I could turn back time and tell her. I hope I can be a bridge between better relations between the WMF and the community so things don't end up being a Venn diagram like I talk about in my mobile editing essay. I'm really dedicated to trying to make things better for both sides of these conversations. In the future, do you think you could maybe tone down comments like the one you left Haley at the village pump? I see that you were kinder on the mediawiki page itself and I appreciate that. But it can be a bit hard for people from the foundation to seek community engagement voluntarily if people always yell at them whenever they ask for it. I'm not saying that was your intention here but if you read your comment back in an angry tone of voice, maybe you'll understand what I'm saying? Feel free to disagree with me on this if you'd like. hi! thank you.. is it acceptable to cite information from youtube? --Manutd48 (talk) 08:47, 20 August 2024 (UTC)[reply]

@Manutd48: Most of the time you wouldn't want to do that because it is a usergenerated source (unreliable because anyone can say anything). However, if you're citing a YouTube video from a reputable publisher (e.g. the New York Times has a YouTube channel), the fact that it's a video doesn't suddenly change its reliability. Does that make sense to you? Clovermoss🍀 (talk) 08:51, 20 August 2024 (UTC)[reply]

I didn't realize we kept track of that sort of thing. 😅 I got a filling recently and my dentist ended up telling me that there was a Wikipedia club at his university. I think I might hide for a bit if people keep recognizing me. I do feel like it's my duty to mention that this publication didn't actually talk to me, they're just quoting me from the YouTube video the foundation put out of the opening ceremony. I was actually a bit surprised to randomly come across this piece. I suppose they wanted to be the first in the Niagara region to cover this? Clovermoss🍀 (talk) 09:32, 20 August 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Like a boss 😎
Clover's future press interviews:
2025: "Yeah so this was my third conference, and some folks cornered me in a hotel lobby, and, well, I never expected to be named WMF CEO but I'm really looking forward to working with everyone..."
2030: "Well I saw this conference in Ottawa that looked cool so I decided to check it out, and I don't really know where this idea got started but needless to say it's an honor being elected Canada's next Prime Minister..."
2035: "I always wanted to go to New York, and they were having this neat conference at the UN so I decided to stop by, and someone said 'Hey, you'd make a great Secretary-General!'..." Levivich (talk) 15:54, 20 August 2024 (UTC)[reply]
I appreciate your faith in me but I doubt I'll end up in any of those three positions 😅. This was a very entertaining read, though. :) Clovermoss🍀 (talk) 16:47, 20 August 2024 (UTC)[reply]
2040: "Greetings! As Planet Ambassador and on behalf of the people of Earth, let me say we are really excited to finally meet our neighbors. Our Interstellar Growth Team has been working on some awesome onboarding tools that I think you'll find both fun and educational..." 😂 Levivich (talk) 17:16, 20 August 2024 (UTC)[reply]
