Checking in[edit]

Hey Cmapm, just checking in to say hello. I hope all is going well with you. Thank you again for all your help with the gymnastics articles and all the support on Wiki!

I was stunned to read, on your user page, that there aren't many articles about gymnastics in the Russian Wiki! What a shame, since it's been such an important sport for so many years. :(

Have a great weekend! Namaste Mademoiselle Sabina 20:40, 7 May 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Hi, Mademoiselle Sabina! I had noticed articles, created by you on 1997 and 2002 Worlds. Excellent work on tables and very nice notes there! Thank you for these and other gymnastics-related articles. I am glad to see, that such a great sport gradually becomes represented appropriately in the English Wiki.
By the way, the article about Ludmilla finally became named appropriately, IMHO :) Always happy to see you, have a great time! Andrei - in real life, in Wikipedia - Cmapm 23:56, 7 May 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Hey, now, Andrei's not a tough name to say! I was expecting it to be something like Aloysius, from that list of baby names you gave me. :)
I saw the article about Ludmilla--I am glad she's finally named properly and can be easily found. I also noticed the update to your user page. I'm flattered you think so highly of me (sorry to say, I'm not a famous French or American gymnast. It would have been nice to compete at that level, though!), and find your profile very interesting (see, I could never solve the Rubik's Cube; I just used to cheat by peeling the stickers off. :)
I'll be away from Wiki for a little while (nothing serious)...if I see something that needs immediate attention I'll do minor edits but I won't be able to do much here for the next week or so. Take care and I'll see you here when I return! Namaste, Mademoiselle Sabina 06:19, 18 May 2006 (UTC)[reply]
Hey! I noticed a lot of gymnasts' photos, uploaded by you some time ago. They are great! In particular, I like moments, chosen for captures, very much.
Thank you for notifying me! Oh, a whole week... I'll be waiting for you, but calmly, which is a big plus! As concerns my name, a consonant "r" in Russian is pronounced very differently from the English one. Due to this, if we stick to the Russian pronunciation, it's even more difficult to say for English-speaking people, than Aloysius :)
Yes, the cube is very difficult to solve for the first time... Another Rubik's puzzle, pyraminx, was much easier, but it got lost a long time ago and is very hard to purchase. I wish you to have a great Wikibreak! Waiting for your return Cmapm 15:21, 18 May 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Hey, it's great to see you back from the Wikibreak!!! I was a little confused with an update to your User Page:

...Treat me with condescension and I won't.

If this concerns my message above, that was very difficult for me indeed: learning to solve the cube took more than a month... If this concerns some of my other edits, perhaps, sometimes I was condescent to you, but I didn't and don't realize that! Please, say, where that was?!

The thing I fear the most in my life since I met you is that one day I'll not see your edits any more. They are the only thin thread, which connects me to you, and I can't imagine my life without that. Cmapm 10:31, 28 May 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Hey, no! That comment didn't concern you at all. It's just something I wanted to add to my userinfo; it's not directed to anyone in particular. It's just something that's been on my mind lately. I'm sorry if you took it to heart! Again, totally, not about you.
Thanks for the welcome back! Always nice to hear from you! Namaste, Mademoiselle Sabina 16:26, 28 May 2006 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks, this is excellent for me! No need to be sorry, I too shouldn't like somebody to treat you with condescension. It's very nice, that you are a citizen of the world! My beliefs seem to be similar to this. For example, I feel more sympathy to the UN, than to any government.
You are here again! And the day is fabulous, despite the rainy weather :) Cmapm 18:08, 28 May 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Disappointed[edit]

Hey Cmapm, As always, I appreciate your friendship and support. I have to say, though...I am rather sad to read your POV about love. You're certainly entitled to your opinion, and I respect that, and I respect your right to say what you will here on your page. I'm not attacking you. I'm just saying I strongly, vehemently disagree with it.

For my piece...I happen to be straight, but as far as I'm concerned, love knows no boundaries of gender, and it's not for me to judge or condemn. If I did, well, I'd be hurting a lot of friends and relatives I care very deeply about.

Again, please don't think I'm mad or I'm judging or attacking you. I just...found that statement very hurtful and I felt I had to speak up about it.

namaste, Mademoiselle Sabina 15:52, 4 June 2006 (UTC)[reply]

This was a horrible mistake i don't know how i managed to make it. Quote from 1973 S.Ozhegov's "Dictionary of Russian language":
ЛЮБОВЬ Чувство самоотверженной, сердечной привязанности. (roughly: LOVE Feeling of selfless tender attachment).
I hope all will go well with you. I'm very sorry, that this happened. Cmapm 09:19, 5 June 2006 (UTC)[reply]

This media may be deleted.

Thanks for uploading Image:Maria Gorokhovskaya.jpg. I notice the 'image' page currently doesn't specify who created the content, so the copyright status is unclear. If you have not created this media yourself then there needs to be an argument why we have the right to use the media on Wikipedia (see copyright tagging below). If you have not created the media yourself then it needs to be specified where it was found, i.e., in most cases link to the website where it was taken from, and the terms of use for content from that page.

If the media also doesn't have a copyright tag then one should be added. If you created/took the picture, audio, or video then the {{GFDL-self}} tag can be used to release it under the GFDL. If you believe the media qualifies as fair use, consider reading fair use, and then use a tag such as {{Non-free fair use in|article name}} or one of the other tags listed at Wikipedia:Image copyright tags#Fair_use. See Wikipedia:Image copyright tags for the full list of copyright tags that you can use.

If you have uploaded other media, consider checking that you have specified their source and copyright tagged them, too. You can find a list of 'image' pages you have edited by clicking on the "my contributions" link (it is located at the very top of any Wikipedia page when you are logged in), and then selecting "Image" from the dropdown box. Note that any unsourced and untagged images will be deleted one week after they have been uploaded, as described on criteria for speedy deletion. If you have any questions please ask them at the Media copyright questions page. Thank you. --Hetar 20:39, 26 May 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Hello, thanks for the notification and kind words. I tagged the image with {{Non-free fair use in}} upon upload, but intended to provide information on its source a bit later. Believe it or not, I've got "You have new messages" while "preview"'ing my addition :) Cmapm 20:49, 26 May 2006 (UTC)[reply]

DYK[edit]

Updated DYK query On May 14, Did you know? was updated with a fact from the article Sovetsky Sport, which you created. If you know of another interesting fact from a recently created article, then please suggest it on the "Did you know?" talk page.

--Cactus.man 11:55, 28 May 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Hello, thanks for the notification. I am glad, that a fact from the article, created by me, was selected for the DYK. Actually, I was really stunned by that fact, and I suggested it. Cmapm 18:21, 28 May 2006 (UTC)[reply]
Hi Cmapm, thanks for the article and I'm pleased to have added it DYK. It would be nice if you could find some English language references, but I understand that may be difficult. Keep up the good work and please add more nominations if you have any. Cheers. --Cactus.man 18:35, 28 May 2006 (UTC)[reply]
As mentioned in the article about GSE, the encyclopedia was translated into English and printed in New York and London. But I couldn't point out exact volume/page of it, hence I provided a ref. to the Russian edition. However, I've just added a web English-language ref., not very detailed though... Thank you for the support and being interested in this topic! Cmapm 19:25, 28 May 2006 (UTC)[reply]
By the way, on your User Page the Hairy ball theorem is mentioned. Do you work in the field of algebraic topology or are just interested in it? Softly speaking, pretty advanced topic for non-mathematician :) Cmapm 21:04, 28 May 2006 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks for adding the reference. If I read things correctly, the new Sport-Express, launched in 1991, is a different publication from Sovietsky Sport and (one of) the main reason(s) for the decline in circulation of Sovietsky Sport. I think this needs to be worked into the Sovietsky Sport article because it is a key factor. Without that, the reference doesn't seem to make much sense.
As for the Hairy ball theorem, no I don't work in the field. My mathematical expertise only extends as far as 1st year university level, but I am interested in maths and physics topics, and science topics generally. I am strictly a reader of these, rather than a writer. As I say on my user page, I arrived there by accident (from Tokamak as I recall), after becoming absorbed and diverted while doing some serious research on behalf of a good friend. This is one of the reasons this place can be so addictive: check out six degreees of separation ... :-) --Cactus.man 21:49, 28 May 2006 (UTC)[reply]
Yes, you are absolutely right, I've added a sentence, based on the information there, thanks!
Well, my expertise extends to 6-year university level, and we hadn't a course on algebraic topology :) But I'm very interested in functional analysis and general topology. This is off-topic, of course, as I don't contribute to math-related topics in Wikipedia. Just I like people, who are interested in scientific topics without being "forced" to work on them by the university, institute, etc. :) Cmapm 22:22, 28 May 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Re: Missing wikipedians[edit]

Hello, and where is written, that if a user has less than 500 edits, one should not be listed? Cmapm 01:01, 31 May 2006 (UTC)[reply]

It says in the Missing wikipedians page Please do not add people to this list who were never an integral part of the community. Most of the people in the list made well over 1,000 edits. I seen most people with less than 500-600 edits removed and she had much less than 500 edits. Thanks Jaranda wat's sup 01:14, 31 May 2006 (UTC)[reply]
Perhaps you are right... Although I have over 5,000 and don't feel myself an integral part of the community yet :) Cmapm 01:21, 31 May 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Thank you for your input here![edit]

Thank you for the help with this article! Your recent edits were particularly nice! Cmapm 20:14, 1 June 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Hi, thank you for your input here too! You are right about putting things differently here, since you are able to read Hans Christen Andersen in the original Danish. I did put a lot of work into this article, so that is why I have taken an interest in it. I am glad that you have been of such help as well. I am translating the paragraph that you posted on the talk page, and I am almost finished. When you do that you can really see what Mr. Andersen is really saying! With kindest regards, --Drboisclair 20:49, 1 June 2006 (UTC)[reply]
Oh, no! Unfortunately, I am not able to read in Danish. I just translated the main words in the sentences and found, that their essence corresponds to that of the translation, which I have. This is great, that you can translate everything without actually studying the language! I noticed that the article can be improved, because I've just read this great story and still under impression. Perhaps, after a week or so, I should not be able to recall all those details. I've looked through the history of that page, your work on it in November was really great! My respect! Cmapm 21:25, 1 June 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Thank you for your contributions, especially the ones relating to Soviet and or socialist topics of all kinds. Given your self-proclamation as coming from the Soviet Union and the flag on your main page I think we are very much tuned to the same wavelength !
Keep up your good work, Markus
PS: I understand very well what you mean by your statement "I keep my feelings and emotions off from the Wikipedia, because I identify them as the source of my and other users' stress. Personificated ones had not experienced any changes, but they'll sleep within me, and I shan't pass them through to the Wikipedia." That's also the reason for my rather restraining myself on Wikipedia, just sporadically correcting some overly embarassing mistakes or contributing to articles on topics concerning the Soviet Union and other former socialist countries, for example my (far from finished) rewordings of the János Kádár article or my continuous work on the German version of the Andropov article (to name but two favourites of mine). Thanks again for all your efforts, Markus --84.114.150.50 09:59, 1 July 2006 (UTC) (sometimes writing from other IPs, too)[reply]

Thanks for your "invitation" to create an account. Although I originally had intended not to create one, I have done so now. My user name is Elsmlie. BTW: Is it possible to "import" my earlier edits under various IPs to my new user account ?
I hope your Wikibreak won't be too long and I will soon hear from you again. Yours, --Elsmlie 11:52, 3 July 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Astapovo[edit]

Hi, Do you have any knowledge about the place Astapovo. I've just created this tiny article as a begining. As this is the dath place of Leo Tolstoy, it could be of interest if someone expand it. Most of the info available about this place seems in Russian. I searched and there is no catogery called 'Russian Wikipedians', so it was difficult to find someone...At the end i got you from the edits on the USSR article. :)

The gymnast images.[edit]

Samntha Smith[edit]

I'm glad you're still keeping an eye on the Samntha Smith page. It was nice to see your latest book cover addition. It's also on my permanent watch list. Denni 23:26, 28 June 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Re Demography of Soviet Union[edit]

Hi cmapm, I would like to resolve our differences of opinion. I answered your comments on the discussion page, byut you have not responded. I don't want to leave it at that if we can find a way to work to improve the essay. I tried to write to your email address, i.e., in a more private way, but that seems not to be available. If we can communicate in some other way, I would be happy to do so.

I hope you come to see that I am trying to give an accurate picture, and I have no other agenda than that. I do social science, I am not a politico. I also mentioned that I can supply quite a bit of data that might make a useful reference for the discussion, and then readers would see why there was a puzzle to solve.

Two things that would be helpful, I think, are annual figures for life expectancy, separately for males and females; and annual figures on the infant mortality rates.

Here are the infant mortality figures. If you are interested in the life expectancy figures, let me know and I will post that information here also. As I mentioned in my note in the Discussion, all of the initial focus of those who were proclaiming a health crisis in the Soviet Union was on the changes in infant mortality from 1970-74. At the time they were writing about this in 1980, Goskomstat had already stopped publishing the figures for years after 1974. Later, as I mentioned, the publication of detailed figures resumed after 1986 (and glasnost'), and so the entire series of figures became available as I report it to you here. Thank you for your kind attention to my messages.--Mack2 20:26, 11 July 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Infant Mortality Rate (IMR), USSR (from Goskomstat, Naselenie SSSR 1988: Statisticheskii ezhegodnik (Moscow: Finansy i statistika, 1989), and Goskomstat, Demograficheskii ezhegodnik 1990 (Moscow: Finansy i statistika, 1990).) Calculation is the standard IMR: number of children who die in first year, per 1000 live born children.

E-Mail conversation[edit]

Dear Cmapm, I hope your Wikibreak will soon be over. Being a registered user of WP for less than four weeks, I now already for the first time experienced the immense "stress" WP can generate when you are confronted with small-minded people that are (obviously for ideological reasons) unable of even a simple compromise and risk a childish editing war instead. In the end, I have given up because I realised that is was meaningless to argue any longer. (The subject, by the way, was originally the silly term "Goulash communism" and finally only a simple year date.) Well, I'm afraid I failed to "keep my feelings and emotions off from the Wikipedia"... Anyway, I wanted to ask you if your offer of a "frank e-mail conversation" as stated on your user page is still valid. If so, I would like to come back to it sometime. Yours, --Elsmlie 18:19, 27 July 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Hello, could you please check this article? It is presumed that the only children railroad is in Minsk, whereas there are others in such Soviet towns as Yaroslavl. Most of these are derelict now, is it possible that Minsk Children Railroad is the only one that still functions as was intended? --Ghirla -трёп- 09:31, 1 August 2006 (UTC)[reply]

I have changed the title of both articles to better English language equivalents - Children's railway and Children's Railroad (Minsk). I have also changed the related category to Category:Children's railways, and placed it under a category for narrow gauge only. If any lines are not narrow gauge, then the category will need to be changed back to Category:Railway lines. Hope this is ok. Noisy | Talk 08:08, 6 August 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Hi Cmapm, could you provide more accurate information about the carousel you have described in Image:Standard Soviet carousel.jpg? Where is/was it located and when? Thank you. -Easlak 19:37, 30 October 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Rusky[edit]

I saw your deletion from List of ethnic slurs. However the entry had only been there a month.[1]. We removed all of the unsourced entries a couple of months ago, but of course they creep back in. Thanks for helping. Cheers, -Will Beback · · 19:14, 21 November 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Yes, I know, that "Rusky" in its exact form was inducted three months ago. But slightly modified forms "Russki/Russky", which I treat to be actually the same, were there since 2003. Anyways, never mind, that my note was only the reason for removing it instead of tagging it with {{fact}}. As simple as that, nothing more. Cmapm 21:26, 21 November 2006 (UTC)[reply]
That's fine. We need to watch that article closely because it is a magnet for vandals, but even more because it is a former playground of banned Primetime (talk · contribs). GRE[edit]

Well, I think GSE --> GRE is not much more than a name change. I didn't check, but I am willing to bet the same people are doing it, in the very same building. They kept many (too many!) old articles, added some new ones, employed a new typesetting technique and that's it. I think the same story with "Советский Энциклопедический Словарь" which is now called "Российский Энциклопедический Словарь". I would vote for incorporation of GRE into GSE or the other way around (probably the latter is better, actually). In the meantime, I say we should get rid of the red links. Mhym 21:44, 8 January 2007 (UTC)[reply]

You have a point. I checked and there are two WP pages in Russian: one for GSE, and one for GRE. Let's make a redirect for now and you can continue making your links to GRE. Alternatively, you can make a short stub. Mhym 22:08, 8 January 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Wrong. Here is Valery Vasilyev: Public Chamber of Russia. He is not a sportsman. So please do not repeat your redirect again. Colchicum 10:06, 12 January 2007 (UTC)[reply]
