I don't have a source to back it up, but it was explained to me that cremation is a Buddhist thing, and the traditional Shinto thing is to roll the body up in a barrel-like thing for burial—this is rare today, though. Apparently cremation did not become common until the 20th century, although if you told that to the average Japanese they'd be surprised. Today, people tend to follow Buddhist rites for death-related things (funerals, family tombstone visits, etc) and Shinto for life-related things (celebrating a birth, shrine visits at New Year's)—even though most Japanese are not particularly religious (if at all). It's all very confusing, and your average Japanese is not very helpful in explaining it. Curly Turkey ⚞¡gobble!⚟ 09:07, 22 May 2014 (UTC)

    • Y'learn something new all the time—I'd thought kegare was just a less-common synonym for yogore or kitanai (two words for "dirty" written with the same Chinese character as kegare). The skipping of the New Year's postcords was always explained to me as "medetaku nai kara" (roughly "because there's nothing to feel happy about (celebrate?)"—the dictionary gives "because it's inauspicious", but it's not anything as pompous-sounding a thing to say as that).       • Which wouldn't surprise me at all (we probably have just as good of an understanding about Canadian traditions).         • Ha! They even dress the Colonel up as Santa Claus. They actually do serve turkey at KFC at Christmas (at least some years), but it's only smoked turkey legs (tastes like ham...blecch)
          wp.ja says that the original author was opposed to the adaptation (didn't like the script), and told the director to make a different work about the subject instead. I've been looking for the source of the quote, but it looks like evey blog in Japan has decided to quote wp.ja on it. That's assuming the original quote was ever online.   • I got myself all excited—I came across a 26-page academic paper published at Fukuoka University. The entire first page is a summing up of how the book came to be adapted ... but it begins with "according to Wikipedia" (and quotes that quote I was looking for ... from Wikipedia) ... SAS Institute

Hey, do you think I can borrow you for the last section (History) here? User:Guy Macon has been reviewing a lot of the content, but I noticed on his Talk page that he's sick and I don't want to bother him. You'll see the content is very positive and includes an unusual number of awards and whatnot, but I am just following the sources, I swear! After that all that's left is the Lead and I should be able to nominate it for GA. The GA reviewer will of course point out how promotional it is, and I expect to go through "that" song and dance again ;-)

BTW - I am also asking around (maybe forum shopping, I suppose) for editors to participate on the James T. Butts, Jr. page (see BLPN discussion here. I meant because the sources are mostly op-eds and primary sources. There seems to be a general consensus that my version is basically better and more in-line with the direction the article needs to head, however without bold editing on an article where editors have strong opinions, it could take quite a while to get a strong version in place, whereas I feel severe BLP issues like this should be handled with some degree of urgency. Cropping Kelpie

Hi Crisco, I've been trying to crop this old piece of artwork using the Commons tool. I'm trying to get rid of the white space/text and whenever I try it, the tool is cutting the image off below her feet despite having the selection correct. Now there is a slight problem. The other file is used in like 50 articles, (counting other wikis too) this one File:Jan Vermeer - The Art of Painting - Google Art Project.jpg, is conected to 1 talk page... Have you ever seen this film? About how the Japanese Army heroically saved Indonesia from Western oppression during World War II? I came across it in an article about the recent-ish vogue for right-wing revisionist Japanese films like The Eternal Zero. Seems like a lot has been written on it—I'm surprised there's no aticle.

2014 Isla Vista killings

Shall I return the delated information on the 2014 Isla Vista killings or am I going to break some rule with this being my third reversion?

Hi Crisco. I am not incredibly active at the moment, but I was looking at that article and what was going on. I would suggest it's very bad practice to block someone for edit warring when you are are the last one she reverted, and part of the content dispute. I think it is probably a good idea to undo your actions and ask for an independent administrator to review. Dominic·t 06:38, 26 May 2014 (UTC)

  • The editor has already asked for a review of the block, which has the same effect. Allowing her to stay blocked for the x-teen minutes it'll take for this block to be reviewed (based on the comments below, this is already being looked into) will prevent further possible disruptions and keep her block log cleaner. — Crisco 1492 (talk) 06:50, 26 May 2014 (UTC)

    • I think that is a misreading. "straightforward cases" means that you won't get in trouble for reverting acts of vandalism at the same time you block a vandal (or ban evasion or similar). That is, there is no dispute in these cases. But the very top of that page, even in the nutshell, says that administrators "must never use them to gain an advantage in a dispute in which they are involved". Once you reverted and expressed an opinion on the content, this became no longer straightforward, because your action served to give the upper hand to the side of the debate which you expressed support for.       • She was at 5RR and had reverted 3 editors within 24 hours. The policy violation is straightforward, and the clause in WP:INVOLVED uses vandalism as an example - not as a prescription. The prescription, in so far as that paragraph gives one, is reverts on "the basis that any reasonable administrator would have probably come to the same conclusion"; would you have blocked an individual at 5RR, who clearly continued edit warring despite two warnings on her talk page? Would "any reasonable administrator ... probably have" done so (not saying Doug is unreasonable, for the record)? Although it is "best practice" to report at a noticeboard, "best practice" does not mean "you are 100% required to do this". Blocking her immediately prevented further disruptions and allowed dialogue to be opened, which protected the high-profile article. — Crisco 1492 (talk) 09:43, 26 May 2014 (UTC)

Your 3RR close just now

The edit-warring was about Category:Violence against men in North America, a category that with the removal of this page has only 2 entries and no definition of what articles should be in this category, and I can see BLP issues arising both with the category and its addition to this page. Apparently the perpetrator of this killing has written about his hatred of women, but not of men, which would justify the Category:Violence against women in the United States category (although I'd still like to see a definition for this one also). Adding the violence against men category appears to be stating that the perpetrator was acting because of his hatred of men (as well), and that doesn't seem to be justified - thus a BLP violation. I was about to close as no violation. I certainly can't see this as blockable. Dougweller (talk) 06:41, 26 May 2014 (UTC)

  • There's five reverts, which is already well past WP:3RR, and The BLP aspects are not prominent enough, IMHO, to meet the exception in WP:EW (although after your comment here I think you are probably correct that the category is not warranted). That you agree with the individual doing the reverting does not mean an exception should be made (per WP:EW: "Note that an editor who repeatedly restores his or her preferred version is edit warring, whether or not the edits were justifiable: it is no defense to say 'but my edits were right, so it wasn't edit warring'."), especially since multiple editors have asserted that having the category may be justifiable. I've raised the unblock request at AN as Dominic also felt a review was necessary - I've raised it as a request to look at Sceptre's unblock request and made it explicit that I am not asking for any action against anyone.   • I do not consider reverting violations of policy being involved. If I were to do so, then I would have to ask another admin to block somebody who, say, spends an hour vandalizing articles and refuses to stop (not that Spectre was vandalizing, but 3RR violation was out of policy). Had this been an issue which I had feelings regarding, there could have been WP:INVOLVED issues, or if this had been a content dispute with neither party violating policy. I warned her, reverted her violation of 3RR, and blocked her when she reverted that and went to 5RR. — Crisco 1492 (talk) 09:37, 26 May 2014 (UTC)
    • Crisco, the fact that Sceptre was breaking 3RR does not change the fact that the edits were expressions of a legitimate content disagreement, and that you took a stance in the content dispute while at the same time taking administrative action. As for your taking a stance on the content issue, what I was seeing was this [1] edit, in which you clearly did so; that you later opened a discussion about it on the talkpage is evidence of a laudable attitude as an editor, but it still doesn't change the fact that you ought not to be handing out blocks on participants in this disagreement at the same time.   • Doug, Writing about hate of women while highly disturbing is not in it's self an act of violence. The shooter did commit acts of violence but he spared no one based on gender in fact I understand he started by stabbing to death three men. Template:POTD/2014-06-13

I can't find your source for the In Memoriam A.H.H. being Somersby Rectory. I'm a little wary of how it's framed at the moment: the poem's point is that the garden a metaphor, it's not that he didn't love the garden at the rectory, it's that he has to abandon it because of its melancholy association with his dead friend, and he goes on to imagine another child growing to love it:

Till from the garden and the wild
A fresh association blow,
And year by year the landscape grow
Familiar to the stranger's child;

Perhaps something like "described the gardens he remembered from his youth, now that he had left" would be better? Adam Cuerden (talk) 13:45, 28 May 2014 (UTC)

Template:Did you know nominations/The Summons (hymn)

Crisco, I think I've hit a limit on this nomination with the accusation of nitpicking. The C of E, to my reading of the sources, is not faithfully representing them in the quest to exceed the magic 1500 required by DYK. Some examples:

  • History:
  1. Third sentence: the claim that this hymn differs from Bell's others because it's Celtic Christian (and, presumably, the rest of his output isn't) is unsupported in the source.
  2. Fourth sentence: it says "initially viewed", which seems unsupported, as is the assertion that it's a radical Christian hymn because of the uncommon words rather than because of the theology behind them.
  • Composition and usage:
  1. Fourth sentence: I couldn't check the 2010 edition (page 51 wasn't part of the preview), but could the 2014 edition, which includes it but makes no recommendation that it be used as a recessional. (The cited 2010 edition may well have had a different suggestion.)
  2. Final sentence: phrases like "was mentioned in official reports" set off alarm bells, and the source (a joint publication by the Anglican and Methodist churches) is clearly talking about a series of workshops then planned for the Anglican-Methodist covenant, specifically in the context of the hymn's possible use during the first workshop while the attendees are praying or worshipping together, rather than during actual church services. The sentence gives the impression that it's far more than that.

Rather than get into a 3RR with TParis, who just told me to "piss off", I'm heading over to you with this one.

The problem with this nomination from the beginning was that there was too much overlap between the general article on the billionaires and the individual year articles, and by DYK rules it was very clear that both could not run without running afoul of newness/expansion rules. I thought the solution I suggested was the best that could be accomplished, and ThaddeusB preferred the three (later five) individual years to the master article.

  • The articles were all by ThaddeusB: master article (the bulk of which is sections for each of the individual years plus tables for those years and many others) and individual year articles. My take—which was a second opinion after the original reviewer thought both shouldn't be eligible but wanted an additional viewpoint—was either you count the text in the master, or count it in the many individual years, but it shouldn't count for both, especially given how alike the texts were.       • So I may have struck gold. I looked at the picture and saw that the National Archives and Records Administration may have a copy of it or something. So on a hunch I emailed them and checked to see if they had a copy of it. They said they didn't have one. However, they instead sent me this. Unfortunately it seems to be in TIFF. But it looks so much better than the last picture. They also gave me their publication statement and other stuff so I think I got something out of all this. GamerPro64 19:16, 2 June 2014 (UTC)

The image has considerable grain, though I'm not sure if this is owing to the photographer using fast film or if the scanned print was of low quality. DYK deck-clearing

Crisco, I'm doing some more deck-clearing. I was hoping I could lean on your expertise here.

As you can see from Template:Did you know nominations/Konig's Westphalian Gin, I had problems with the article, which I felt was entirely too reliant on a single 1913 advertisement. Since then, Philafrenzy has added a new Background section. I'm not sure this is enough to "adequately deal with the topic", and am passing the determination over to you.

There are source discrepancies in Template:Did you know nominations/University of Mississippi Field Station, and I'm still puzzling over what needs to be done—the ALT hook may deal with a fact that is sourced, but other material in the article has contradicting source claims, and the nominator seems to have knowledge of the place.

The latest at Template:Did you know nominations/The Summons (hymn) is that The C of E basically ignored my edits both big (removals) and small (copyedits), and made what I felt were inadequate changes to his previous version, so I reverted him. It's only been four days since (with no action one way or the other), but the article is at 1077 prose characters. Do you think the hymn is notable?

  • I think it's definitely worth a nomination. Good to see you've been contributing significantly to the Oxford College articles (which in general are not that well illustrated). I visited in the winter but it was not a particularly nice time of year to photograph the exteriors (plenty of building work, muddy grass and dull gardens) so I focused on the interiors, mainly the chapels and halls as they tend to be the most impressive buildings. Deletion

Eva Kuwailanimamao Cartwright, Daisy Napulahaokalani Cartwright, Alexander Cartwright III, Robert Kalanikupuapaikalaninui Wilcox, and Virginia Kaihikapumahana Wilcox were deleted a while ago when I was busy at school. I had no time to defend their deletions, although as of now I agree with their deletion so I have no desire to appeal for their recreation. Requesting images from living people

Hey, Crisco, since you're an image guy I thought I'd ask you (or ask you to point me to someone who knows better). What procedure would you recommend for requesting an image from a living person(s)?   • I'm not very successful when it comes to asking people to donate images... I think my only successes are with Mike Hoolboom, Robert Farrar (for his grandfather, Kenneth Horne), and Ucu Agustin (who happens to be friends with WikiMedia Indonesia's president). Watching more successful people like Sven Manguard, I've noticed that the really mainstream subjects rarely donate copyrighted images. For video games, it's usually indie companies.   • If you're dealing with famous people, don't go to the person or to their business manager, go to their agent or publicist. That's the avenue I've found most successful. When speaking to their agent, it's important to frame it not as "this is good for the free culture movement" but as "the first picture that most people are going to see/associate with your client is the first one in their Wikipedia article. If you give us a high quality image of them, you get to ensure that the image people see is a good looking, up to date one." Then it becomes image management, and agents/publicists put a good deal of importance on that. It becomes a "help yourself by helping us" situation. Additionally, since celebrities tend to get more communications thrown their way than their agents do, it makes it more likely that your request will be seen. Banknotes

Hi Crisco-

There is a featured set of four notes that would work well for June 25th. This day is taken, but the several successive days are open. I don't know if there is any room to request if the author of the image would be willing to move by one day (unless of course they selected that day). Hawaii overprint note has a denominational set of four US banknotes specifically issued during World War II (on June 25, 1942) for circulation in the Hawaiian Islands. I would want to reduce the black borders, if permitted, without in any way changing the notes themselves. Finally watched it

Overall, I enjoyed it, but I just can't get over the scene where Mika confronts Daigo over the job and threatens to leave him, and he stands up for the job—at that point of the movie I just can't buy that he'd developed such pride and attachment to the job. He'd only been in town less than two months and was still learning the ropes—somehow I get the feeling that some motivation was left on the cutting room floor. Yes, in retrospect the film could have worked without the father issues, and reviewers haven't focused on those as much (for some reason), but overall I found it enjoyable.   • First (and a minor point): NawlinWiki protected the page, not me, but if the article met the concerns of the old AFD then I would move it. Second, I'm not quite sure the article is there yet. Most of the citations here are not in-depth coverage of Ghorbani in independent sources, but rather first-party sources (Tufts Magazine, related to his university; Truceuticals, LLC., which he chairs) or him being quoted in the media (The Wall Street Journal, Huffington Post). There's also a small POV issue, but that's easily fixable, and more stylistic than content-related. Re:Advertisements and the main page

I understand why it may be best to have a structured discussion about it at a later date- I certainly wouldn't want to see the promotion held back because of main page concerns. I don't see anything wrong with the political advert, which has a degree of historical interest which is (currently) absent from the Dustforce video. This is the important thing, I think, rather than the "product" being no longer available. I seem to remember that we have a very old Coca Cola advert, but I don't mind that, either. Okuribito no Okuribito

Hey, Crisco, I just got Okuribito no Okuribiro in the mail. Supposedly used, but in perfect condition—the spine's so stiff, I don't believe anyone's ever opened it. It's much more in depth than I thought it would be—not on the movie itself, but on background stuff, like the setting, nôkan stuff, a Takita bio, the winning of the awards, etc. It'll take me a while to work this stuff in. A problem: you've got a total of 38 awards for the list, but the book claims (right on the cider) that there were 69.   • The stain over "America" appears to continue into the floorboards as well, at least at thumbnail. Sadly I'm not doing FPC-quality uploads at the minute. More like "Images we can find nowhere else" uploads. A couple of the better quality ones (I was photographing, not scanning, and pretty rushed. At least they gave me permission) are below.     • Oh, that stain used to go all the way up, very visibly. I know there's still a little to do with it, but, at this point, only visible in the floorboards is actually a huge improvement.   • Owing to my hurry (and the lack of proper equipment) it ended up curved pretty bad (I can upload a less drastic crop if you want to check it out), and the printer didn't give much room at the edge of the ad. The ad for Si Melati (also a redlink) turned out a bit better. There are a few other ads that I haven't uploaded yet (Penjelundup (1953), Lagi-Lagi Krisis (1955), Si Dudung (1956), Sedetik Lagi (1957); the one for Penjelundup may have possibilities, although I'd hate to see how Commons' "This is not free in the US, but we don't care about the URAA" goes over at FPC). None of these are on my immediate "to do list", however, as each digitized issue takes an hour and a half to go through and another half hour to upload (or more)... blasted Indonesian internet. — Crisco 1492 (talk) 15:31, 13 June 2014 (UTC)

I did add the cleaned up version of the image to the Kelpie article - but having looked at it constantly throughout the day, I still didn't feel it was of good quality. I eventually managed to find an 1890 line drawing that I've now used instead (hopefully the license is okay and I've marked it correctly). I'm surprised I didn't catch it until now. Is there anyway to correct this in the DKY records this late now. Thanks

Shooting dates

Hey, my laptop's fucked (I'm in the middle of reinstalling the OS now), so I haven't been able to do much editing today (I'm on my phone now). I just noticed you added that filming took place between March and May 2007. Mou Hitori no Okuribito says filming started in April 2008 and lasted 40 days (p. 199), and elsewhere in the article we have Sakata Location Box forming in December 2007 to secure locations and extras. Also, it says the film was screened in 36 countries (Mou Hitori agress), but then in the same paragraph it says it was scheduled for release in 30 countries.   • Fisheye is fixable, although we could probably run it as-is and still get through FPC. Colours are a bit faded, but then she appears to be quite conservative with when editing the digital versions of her photographs (she appears to digitize them personally before donating).   • Well, someone got it (when you sent that message I was... probably about 35km from home and still on the road). I had included as astrology has had a significant cultural impact (even though the confusion between it and astronomy is a pain in the ***), and thus is part of the social impact of the star (i.e. what makes Algol more significant than, say, 7 Piscium); perhaps it's my background in the humanities speaking, but for me that kind of thing can be important without necessarily being valid in a scientific sense (for me, it can be compared with the poppy as a symbol of remembrance in several countries; botanists couldn't care less, but that doesn't make the information any less encyclopedic for Wikipedia). The blurb did differentiate between the two; linking both may have been clearer, but I had hoped that our readers were smart enough to not need that. Reconcerning The Jakarta Post

Greetings from Hong Kong. I am sorry if this make a mess on your trip. Just two questions:

  1. In the article mentioned above, it's said that "English favouring the active voice and direct statements, while respectful Indonesian favours the passive voice and a circuitous approach." Do you remember there's a man point out that the translation is very eerie and inappropriate, thus opposed the GA attempt made for the Chinese translation for the article mentioned above? He also questioned above the translation of this sentence. He argues that in this situation, "respectful Indonesian" means elegant/prestigious way of Indonesian writing. But I have noticed an article about the televised debate between Mr. Joko Widodo and Mr. Prabowo Subianto by Lianhe Zaobao, a Singapore-based Chinese paper. In the article, it stated that a typical style for a Javanese to speak is humble, just like what Jokowi did. So, I think that it is quite contradictory between that man's comment and the article's content. I prefer to adopt the article's speech, i.e. "respectful Indonesian" = "humble way of Indonesian writing".
  2. In the same article, it quoted the speech of Mr. Jusuf Wanandi: "You cannot bullshit in English, like the Javanese way." That man argued again, this time point out the word "bullshit" means chatting, not lying nor having a bad intend. Do you agree with his comment?

  • Hi 春卷柯南, perhaps #1 could be answered with a translation such as "Indonesians showing respect" or something similar? Zanhe has a better understanding of the nuances of Chinese, so they might be able to help. As for "bullshit", here it is neither "lying" nor "chatting"... as I read it, "bullshit" is using a certain phrasing to imply that you'll do something, but not doing it (a favourite tactic of Indonesians who want to stall...     • For the issue 1, I tends to use the explanation provided by dictionary, but it may be better to get a third party advice. For the second issue, I've checked again, and finds that the original translation of the phrase "bullshit" means "boasting", "lying" or "chatting", and the revised translation only means "chatting". For the meaning of not doing what he promised to do, there are several idioms on it, roughly translated as "what one say and do is not the same" and "saying, then not fulfill the promise". However, as I know, they are used as adjectives. If the original translation (boasting/chatting/lying) is used, it may makes contradiction, as I have translated the word "respectful" as a Chinese word means "humble". Image license

I'm trying to work out whether the license on this image is okay to upload to Commons or not? The only thing I can make out on that dreadful black screen is CC-by-SA in the bottom corner and as far as I can see there isn't any information under licensing.   2. Would you be interested in a collab to work up Heinrich's article? I have the biography now. I can't believe that it only cost about £5 to buy it and get it sent from the US

Boenga Roos dari Tjikembang is a 1927 vernacular Malay-language novel written by Kwee Tek Hoay. The book follows a man who leaves his beloved concubine so that he can be married; eighteen years later, he discovers that she had been pregnant, and takes responsibility for his daughter's marriage. The novel has been interpreted variously as promotion of theosophy, a treatise on the Buddhist concept of reincarnation, a call for education, an ode to concubines, and a condemnation of how such women are treated. Inspired by the lyrics to the song "If Those Lips Could Only Speak" and Shakespeare's A Midsummer Night's Dream, the book was written as an outline for the stage drama troupe Union Dalia before being published as a serial in Kwee's magazine Panorama. By 1930 there had been a number of stage adaptations – some unauthorised. The work was filmed in 1931 by The Teng Chun and then in 1975 by Fred Young. Though not considered part of the Indonesian literary canon, the book ranks amongst the most reprinted works of Chinese Malay literature, and is Kwee's most popular publication. Scanning tips?

Hey, I'm no master scanner, but I'd like to upload some stuff to Commons (and hopefully do it right). Can you give me any tips for this scan? It had a pale yellow background (not part of the original image) that I got rid of by setting the contrast at 96 on GIMP. My scanner does 4800dpi, but even at 1200 my little laptop was starting to heave and sweat, and it took a while to open in GIMP—though with all the fine hatching I'd sure like to scan it higher-res. Heinrich

I've had a look at the existing article. It's a largely unreferenced machine translation dealing exclusively with his Ichneumonidae work. 29k, but half is a comprehensive list of (only) his insect works, which will have to go. It leaves out the interesting stuff. He was invited to join the Red Baron, started a long affair with his wife's 16-year old sister (although the three lived and collected together)... and later the governess. Authoritarian and inflexible, he was both brave and lucky. He retrieved his blacksmith from an SS extermination camp, despite having had to pull strings to get his own name taken off the death list.

Can we use the image here under Fair Use, since he's dead? Presumably we then put ichneumon, bird and other relevant pics in the text. Most of the biographical stuff can be referenced to the The snoring bird if necessary. Any other thoughts?

  • We could, but wouldn't a photograph of him in the field have higher EV? I'm sure I've seen one somewhere... one of the articles I read for invisible rail, maybe? Sigh, now what kind of cropping was that. What I meant that the picture should end exactly above the thiny line of the pole, and the rest of the foliage should be in the picture. That means like half of the foreground cropped away, exactly above the pole's topp. Wish I could crop, then I could have shown you that it will work very well... Img needs protecting

I substituted the img per someone's request at Talk DYK [4] but someone needs to protect the image -- it's now moved from prep to Q. Also, I'm not clear that the flickr page from which the original uncropped img was taken actually carries appropriate licensing. EEng (talk) 01:18, 23 June 2014 (UTC)
