Overlinking[edit]
Hello, I'm BlackcurrantTea. I noticed that in this edit, you wikilinked London. This is generally not done unless there is some doubt as to whether an article is referring to London, England or some other London; it is considered overlinking. Red links, "Removed broken links" and "removed dead link"[edit]
Wikilinks like Alex d’Agapeyeff that are red, because they do not lead to articles, are usually called "red links". They can be useful if someone creates an article of that name, and they highlight the possible need for an article of that name. See Wikipedia:Red link.
Sometimes wikilinks get broken. For example London#Climate leads to the climate section of the article on London. If someone renamed that section, it would break the wikilink. For example London#Weather simply leads to the article on London because there is no section title called Weather.
Dead links are links to external sites that either no longer work, or no longer lead to the article intended. Please do not delete them. It can be helpful to find the links on a web archive. Or if the website has changed its URLs, to find the new URL for the article sites. See Wikipedia:Link rot.
Please try to use the right terminology. If you use edit summaries such as "Removed broken links" or "removed dead link" it can alarm other editors. Toddy1 (talk) 12:00, 17 March 2020 (UTC)
- I ran into a couple of similar edits at about the same time frame and wanted to drop a note, but see that it's already covered. Sorry, Cruxstylus, that I had to revert you, but it is not normally a good idea to remove red links if there is even a remote possibility that they will become live at some point in the near or distant future. Even as red links they already serve a purpose, f.e. "What links here" already works for them and thereby allows to build infrastructure (even across multiple language entities of Wikipedia) and sort out needs for disambiguation long before the articles exist.
