I've done that, but they don't see him as a problem, however, he seems to have a single minded approach and as here does not seem to understand basic English. On another article Diet in Sikhism, I had a huge issue with him confusing Sikhism with Kabir Panth. I think he's French and his command of English is very poor. Thanks SH 20:44, 2 October 2011 (UTC)

Political navboxes

Please stop removing party colours from navboxes. WP:Deviations allows colouring schemes that tie into the dominant colour of the work. Thanks, 117Avenue (talk) 03:44, 3 October 2011 (UTC)

Okay. But when you have time, could you please verify that your colour schemes meet the contrast guidelines at WP:COLOR? I usually test them using this tool. For example, the Template:Alberta Liberal Party, using FFFFFF in the foreground and F08080 in the background, fails to meet even the most basic contrast guidelines and thus will be problematic for users with vision impairments. Ideally we need to meet WCAG 2 AAA Compliant, but WCAG 2 AA Compliant is considered the bare minimum. Please read over the material when you have time, and let me know if you have any questions or concerns. RE:WikiMedia Indonesia & Lontar Project

Hi Diannaa, hope you liked the book! If you bought the English translation, was the language use dry, like the original? Actually, I will be one of the coordinators for the project (just getting ready for the flight to Jakarta). Hope this succeeds! So interesting that you are participating in the project. I wish you success with it and will have a go at copy editing Sitti Nurbaya before your GA review. The language in the English translation is good; the scenic descriptions are quite vivid. The novel is no more difficult than any other from that era.   • Interesting. The original Indonesian is rather awkward, as it uses language that comes across as rather unnatural. The first chapter, with Samsul and Sitti talking outside of school, was full of perfect grammar and whatnot... Of course, Balai Pustaka seems to have required it to be that way Thanks a lot. My English has been getting rustier, so my articles often have small grammatical errors... except for when I write half a sentence while looking for a reference and then forget about it. Fingers crossed! If you are into literature and women's issues, Saman may be your cup of tea, although the language is much more vulgar. Greetings from the Guild of Copy Editors September 2011 Backlog elimination drive! We would like to thank all who participated in this drive. Here is the end-of-drive report.

Participation

There were 58 editors who signed-up for this drive, of which 42 participated. This is a slight increase from the July 2011 drive participation, where 39 out of 50 people that signed up participated. Thank you to everyone!

Progress report

During the drive, we reduced the backlog by 146 articles, or by about 4%. Overall we did well, especially considering the exceptionally large number of articles that were tagged during September. Thus far we have reduced the copy edit backlog by 4854 articles, or by about 58%. If we keep up our current rate of copy editing, the backlog should be reduced by 65–70% by the end of this year. End-of-drive results and barnstar information can be found here. Barnstars will be handed out this week.

Once again, thank you for participating in the Guild's September 2011 Backlog elimination drive! Our next drive will be in November, and we hope to see you there!

GOCE drive number discrepancy

I found that the numbers on the gold star leaderboard do not match the one beneath it under the "totals" heading. I recounted the numbers manually myself and came up with a third number. Therefore, I've come to two conclusions: 1) I suck at math 2) One of the two numbers is wrong Would you mind double-checking the numbers for me? I know the post is closed, but can an exception be made for correcting the wrong number? Otherwise, it might bug me forever. Thanks Sesamehoneytart 16:05, 8 October 2011 (UTC)

When I checked the addition, I got a total of 66,406 words, which agrees with the number in the info box. Your totals on the Barnstars page have been corrected, and the proper barnstar has been awarded. I sympathise with you; I too have an inner accountant who occasionally demands satisfaction. Yeah, I did see it. The tweeks in 1.18 have changed the way flatlist displays so that it renders properly on IE9 when a template is initially opened (with IE8 the viewer still needs to switch to compatibility mode). So I am carrying on with converting templates when I have time. For a wild skittle-tastic template, see {{Thanksgiving}}. Other holidays such as {{New Year}} seem to have been assigned random colours. It is thanksgiving in Canada today. Happy thanksgiving, everyone. --Dianna (talk) 17:32, 10 October 2011 (UTC)

Relatively new user, pls help

Hi, I have a friend who heard that I did a few edits on Wikipedia and asked me to help her with a page of a mutual friend. She tried to upload some images that go deleted and I would like to know what I can/should do for them to get them listed. The images are for Lisa Marie Presley page. Adding images to Wikipedia is a tricky business as there are a lot of rules. For example, pictures of album covers are only allowed on the article about the album itself (not the artist), and even then must appear only in the info box. Random photos of people that you might find on the internet are typically copyrighted by whoever took the photo. Images of famous people that appear here on Wikipedia are usually shots that people have been fortunate enough to have obtained themselves. Please see Wikipedia:Image use policy for more information about our image use policies. I have tagged both of your album covers for deletion, as they are not allowed on the article for Lisa Marie, and we already have them on the articles about the albums. My friend has images that she has the rights to herself, when I went to upload them they were too similar to ones that were already deleted so I am not sure what to do with that. --RomieGalaxy
If your friend has a wikipedia account it would be better for her to upload her own photos. You would need written permission to upload photos on someone else's behalf. Thanks for that - I finally finished 36 hours of updates late this afternoon, but still have a few things to put on. To be fair that installation of windows has lasted through 3 years and three motherboard changes without needing a re-install so it was time to do it I suppose ... it was getting a little slow, took 12 or 13 minutes to boot up lol. Now it takes just 2.5!
Anyway, I should be able to get more time for Wiki now that RL is leaving me alone for a while. My friend came over from France and surprised me as he was not due till November and the ensuing travelling plus work left me unable to do any drive stuff the last week of September :¬(
Did everything go ok for you? I noticed an earlier post where you said you were very busy and probably wouldn't have much time for Wiki related stuff (something about only concentrating on your pet projects)? Chaosdruid (talk) 23:59, 18 October 2011 (UTC)

I have been focusing on a big project, Adolf Hitler, since I do not have much time to edit right now due to real-life commitments. Unfortunately I will not have time to look at Hyderabad, India anytime soon so I am going to withdraw from that one. Adolf Hitler article

Hello: Thank you for your work on the article. I see you have added a second "Footnote" section under the "Notes" section of the article. I assume you are planning to add the rest of the notes with quotes/additional information to it. We would then have the cites under "Notes" and the footnotes with cites under the separate section without redundancy. BTW- I would appreciate it if you would look at the way the article 1st SS Division Leibstandarte SS Adolf Hitler is cited; I believe it needs to be streamlined and cleared up. Yes, the intent is that any and all explanatory notes that are currently under the "references" section will get moved to the "Notes" section. I just grabbed a few to get the process started, as it was getting late and I had to log off. I will have a look at the Leibstandarte article too, hopefully one day this week :). It seems I missed out on the discussions about archiving ... I just noticed the note about archiving was discontinued after posting requests to three GOCE members asking if they did ce's so I can close August. I look a right prat now lol.

Thanks for the September barn-star, but I'm very busy this November and working hard for my efforts gaining my permissions to be a useful contributor. I'm not going to join the November backlog drive because of the difficult maintenance. However, I did a lot of maintenance work with copy editing on September. The Guild of Copy Editors invites you to participate in their November 2011 Backlog elimination drive, a month-long effort to reduce the size of the copy edit backlog. The drive begins on November 1 at 00:00 (UTC) and ends on November 30 at 23:59 (UTC). We will be tracking the number of 2010 articles (and specifically will be targeting the oldest three months), as we want to copy edit as many of these as possible. Barnstars will be awarded to anyone who copy edits more than 4,000 words, and special awards will be given to the top 5 in the following categories: "Number of articles", "Number of words", and "Number of articles of over 5,000 words". Peter Kirillovich Essen

Good work on Peter Kirillovich Essen converting the list to prose. Shouldn't the ranks all be capitalized? Lieutenant, Colonel, etc., rather than lower case? --DThomsen8 (talk) 01:34, 1 November 2011 (UTC)

Hi, Dthomsen8. WP:Job titles says they are generic nouns when used in this way. So we say "he was promoted to general" but we capitalise it when referring to a specific person: "General MacArthur". --Dianna (talk) 01:40, 1 November 2011 (UTC)

Mostly they collude to give bad information. They are economics and energy related people that edit in a clique. They prevent by accusation of sock puppetry etc. new editors from making the articles more neutral. They have called an active organization 'fascist' as a 'given' in the information. The organization denies and calls itself the opposite but this group also says the group had its 'demise' and it is still an active group. Johnphos has put the article up for deletion a couple of times and now is trying to get rid of it by 'redirecting' it into the Technocracy Movement article. These tandem editors control this article.

They want to eliminate an article about one of the major social movements ... Technocracy Incorporated the group that started it. Wikipedia is known for special interest control and buddy editing. Now there is an inability to break into the cult like editing cliques or 'clubs' that control certain articles. An important American group is being tried to be done away with by tandem editors that obviously object for some reason to the content. The past clearly shows the same team of tandem editors here.

Beagle and Johnphos are tandem editors as is Lawrencekhoo and Epipelagic... One of the most significant groups in American history and they want to get rid of the article. Its pathetic and shows the weakness of en. Wikipedia.

Lawrence khoo is a mainstream economist who ax grinds economic articles, Google his name for his economic 'beliefs'

"User:Trident13/Wales5+"

I had assumed the information on that page had either been complied from Wikipedia or was simply WP:OR. It looked like it might have been an article in preparation. Another user discovered that many of Trident 13's subpages were copyright violations, material copied over the years from various websites, as Trident was apparently under the impression that copy vios in user space are ok (they are not). I first encountered the problem on October 6, and left a message on the user's talk page at that time. Another message was left the next day, encouraging the user to help out with the clean-up. Two other administrators posted messages to Trident about this problem: James B Watson and Smalljim. The user's only response has been to archive their talk page. They have stopped editing. I have nearly finished the clean-up; 51 userpages were deleted so far and the remainder have been no-indexed to remove them from Google and other search engines. If a participant, for example, has 8000 words, do I give them both the modest and the working man's barnstar, or just the working man's barnstar? Thank you for your interest in helping out with the drive. What the reviewers are supposed to do is check the copy editing of the articles, not hand out the barnstars. No response from you on this issue. There are years worth of edits by Johnphos and his altering in a negative way... non neutral and defaming way, the information.

They think or say everyone is a sock. Those editors edit economics and energy articles primarily and seems to be at issue with ideas related to Technocracy ideas as in wanting to remove them from en. Wikipedia. Is there a way to bring this to the attention of a bunch of Admin's to prevent this group from getting rid of the article?

This was the fastest growing social movement in the U.S. and Canada for a time, and its still around now. I see that you've been converting a number of navboxes to use {{flatlist}}. There's now a slightly better way to do it. You can now use the |listclass=hlist against the navbox. I saw your note in the flatlist discussion about changing the compatibility mode. I tried that but the campaignbox in question displayed as a single row (very wide) when in "show" mode whether wikipedia.org was included or excluded from the compatibility view settings. I exited the browser to make sure the change was implemented. This is really causing havoc when I view the articles that are affected. BTW: I am using IE8. Probably it's time to upgrade to IE9... It doesn't behave any differently in IE9; in IE 9 on my Toshiba laptop the campaign boxes are coming out too wide when in compatibility mode. There should be a button on your browser bar to switch in and out of compatibility mode. Can you switch to Firefox? way better. I came up with what I hope is a strong opening -- but I am not nearly subject matter expert (SME) enough to judge what of the material in the majority of the article is accurate to merit re-write and editing. This article needs a SME.

I speak with some experience, having written a number of entries for Wikipedia, one of which actually received a accolade. Also, I am expert enough as professional writer and editor to know when a SME is needed.

Trouble in paradise

Hi, Diannaa...I wonder if you can help with a problem I'm having with the prose-size script:

I used to be able to get a word count for article sections by clicking on "Page size" in edit-preview mode, but now that doesn't work (it still works, though, for whole articles). At first I thought the culprit was a duplicate-links tool I recently installed, but that doesn't seem to be the case; I removed that script, plus traffic-history and minor-edit-default scripts and bypassed the cache but still no joy. I accessed my Javascript error console pretty much by accident (i.e. clicking on a link whose location I've forgotten), and there are many entries for the prose-size script. This happens in both Firefox and Chrome, so I don't think it's a browser thing. While I can work around it by copy/pasting into Word, I sure miss the convenience. I just tested it and I am not getting the ability to do a word count on a section either (I had not noticed the problem as I normally do not do section editing). Maybe something happened with the recent changes to the mediawiki software. If there was a change, it was a while ago as I have never been able to do section sizes. Maybe it is a browser related issue (I use Firefox) to do with Javascript? Since January last year I have had to copy sections, or partial article edits, to a blank wikipage (usually in my sandbox) or Microsoft Word to do the word counts on partials and sections. Sorry I haven't been around: windows, flu, windows, battlefield 3, chest infection, flu, will it ever end lol!

I did put aside a whole week for Battlefield 3 when it came out, unfortunately I feel like I am a little too old for those games now lol; my reactions aren't what they used to be! Thank you for apologising. If you have the time could you please read the material at Wikipedia:Navigation templates#Properties? Templates should not be arbitrarily decorative. Besides the contrast issues we already talked about, we have to take great care with colour as we have more and more people viewing the site from mobile devices all the time, and some of the stuff that looks fine at home will not work on a cell phone or other mobile device. I would not be surprised if at some point the option for individual users to colour-up the wiki will be eliminated so that a more unified more professional appearance will be presented to our readers. No, don't stop writing. That's a bad idea :) I feel stupid too sometimes; just when you think you've got it all figured out they will come out with some other new technical improvement or rule. Knowledge is a moving target—a journey, not a destination.

I think that you got off on the wrong foot with the other editor because you did not notice the technical improvements to the template and reverted it because of the change in colour. The other user did provide you with a valid reason for removing the colour right from their very first edit. I know you put a lot of thought into exactly what the right colour for Ernest Hemingway should be, so it's hard to hear that it was not compliant with contrast guidelines. Hi Dianna - a couple of things. One, regarding the your defending Alarbus because he linked to the relevant color charts on the talk, I forgot to mention that his link brought me to a blank page. More disturbing to me is that as an administrator you overlooked his 5 reversions, overlooked the effort to gain consensus, which is how we do things around here, and instead issued a warning. At my talk page rather than explain why I should install the script, ("hey TK my script shows errors in the cites at Hemingway") you simply told me (or so I perceived) to install a script without any context - this while I was trying to work on a tricky bit of content. Then, instead of backing away and letting it drop, you went through the Hemingway page and made a long list of "problems" that needed to be fixed. And issued another warning because you could as the only administrator on the page. All of these actions are bound to result in bad feelings all the way around and bound to get my back up. I'll spend the time redoing the 200 and some cites on the Hemingway page, but I'd like for you to give some thought to the consequences of your actions. Thanks. I did not issue edit warring warnings to anybody involved in the edit war. Alarbus had already been warned about the edit war rules by another editor, and no one else was warned not to edit war. I issued two warnings to Ceoil for these personal attacks diff diff diff diff diff and ignored many other personal attacks by him on other pages, including those here on my own talk page. You ignored that we were trying to achieve consensus and you ignored Alarbus' aggressiveness. That's a real problem in my view. No one else edit warred. I changed the template once which started the incident, removed trivia a second time and this was it. Alarbus reverted consistently. If you can't see the underlying and much more serious problem of interrupting a consensus seeking conversation and a bright line offense and only focus on personal attacks then I think this is an prime example of why editors are driven away - particularly by admins who pick and choose issues. Also, since you chose to undertake a mini-source review, I'd like you to strike the issues that I resolved instead of leaving that long list on the page as though I've done something naughty. Greetings from the Guild of Copy Editors November 2011 Backlog elimination drive! Here's the mid-drive newsletter.

Participation: We have had 46 people sign up for this drive so far, and 28 have copy edited at least one article. If you have signed up but have not yet copy edited any articles, please consider doing so. Every bit helps! If you haven't joined, it's not too late. Join us!

Progress report: We are making great progress in our goal of clearing out the oldest articles (April, May, and June 2010) from the queue. There are 122 articles left in those categories, which compares very favorably with the 281 that were present at the close of the September drive. We have reduced the 2010 backlog by 184 articles so far.

Coordinator elections: The term of our second tranche of coordinators will be running out at the end of the year, and we will be accepting nominations for new coordinators early in December. Thanks for explanation

Thank you very much for taking time to give an explanation of why you converted a particular navbox template (one to which I have been a repeat contributor) to the hlist format. I found your explanation here but I realize it's an explanation you've used on many pages. Within just a few words, you made the advantages clear, whereas, when I requested an explanation from another editor who'd made the same change two months ago, all I received were rude comments and false accusations. All I needed was a clear explanation of the benefits or a link to a discussion of such, but he provided neither. As mentioned in the edit summary for this edit and then in this exchange on my talk page, I feel that the slightly wider leading (vertical spacing) produced by the old template (at least in some widely used browsers) made the box slightly more readable, but that is a very minor advantage compared with the advantages you've now identified for me. Maybe someone will tweak the hlist code eventually to increase the leading back to the earlier style. SJ Morg (talk) 12:50, 22 November 2011 (UTC)

Thank you for your kind words. User:Edoktor has been fiddling with the padding on these lists so hopefully you have seen some improvements in the spacing of your navboxes. We will now be able to strip out the padding that has been manually added to many navboxes as this has been dealt with at a higher level in the style sheet. Hi, Bad Graphics Ghost. Please refer to the thread directly above this one, which contains some relevant info. In addition to the two dot templates you mention and those listed below, we are stripping out nowrap markup, as the no-wrap behaviour is now coming from higher up, in the site-wide css. Non-breaking spaces are also no longer required. If an item is especially long, you can allow it to break by wrapping it in the new {{allow wrap}} template. Any extra padding can also be stripped out, as this has been added to the site-wide css.
WOSlinker's script is calling for the removal of the following templates and dots from navboxes:
  • {nowrap begin}
  • {nowrap end}
  • {•wrap}
  • {•w}
  • {·wrap}
  • {·w}
  • {·}
  • {,}
  • {•}
  • ·
  • •
  • others

Template:Xinjiang et al.

I do not see why conveying information solely through colour should be avoided, as you explained here. For Xinjiang in particular, the creation of child groups is ill-advised because doing so confusingly lumps Tacheng and Altay Prefectures with all other prefectures when they are under the administration of Ili Prefecture; the version that stood for over a year, with Tacheng and Altay right under Ili and indented, is much clearer in conveying that fact.

Also, for the provincial templates you applied similar changes to, the pre-November 2011 version of each was (often much) more compact. And if Template:Xinjiang is reverted back for the reasons given above, then for the sake of standardisation, all of the other templates must follow suit, too. GotR Talk 23:23, 7 December 2011 (UTC)

Hi, Guerrilla of the Renmin, and welcome to Wikipedia. The reason we cannot convey information solely by colour is because some people cannot see colour: they are colourblind. There are also many who cannot distinguish the various shades of blue and green selected to identify material in this set of templates due to problems detecting variances in contrast. In addition to those users, we have a small percentage of readers who cannot see at all, and access the material via a screen reader. Please refer to WP:COLOR for the guideline on the desirability of not using colour as the sole means of conveying information.
I have checked the {{Xinjiang}} template and I have to be honest with you, I had not even noticed that these two items were slightly indented. The information that had been conveyed through indenting these two items is still present in a footnote. --Dianna (talk) 04:51, 8 December 2011 (UTC)

I realized later (I was looking at the two edits together, which is why I didn't see the edit summary) that the edit wasn't unexplained and I contacted the IP editor to clarify why I reverted the revert. I do think my edit is fine, since Jeffrey Goldberg is a pretty well established commentator on US-Israeli relations, and Gawker has become a pretty reputable source since then (particularly since I'm using it to source something as uncontroversial as a book release, and I prefer the Gawker link over the Amazon product link). Participation

There were 48 editors who signed-up for this drive, of which 35 participated. Thank you to everyone who helped reduce the size of the backlog!

Progress report

During the drive, we reduced the backlog by 232 articles, or by about 6%. This is a two percent increase from our September drive, when we copy edited 4% of the backlog. We were successful in our primary goal of clearing the oldest three months—March, April, and May 2010—from the queue. Thanks to all who helped copy edit these difficult articles. Thus far we have reduced the copy edit backlog by 5086 articles, or by about 61%. End-of-drive results and barnstar information can be found here.

If you look a little closer, you will see that two of these attempts were pasted on to templates: Dbrodbeck's post of 4:45 was an addendum to a Template:uw-delete3; Resolute's post of 3:30 was a modified Template:uw-ew. All other posts were templates or via Twinkle. Not everyone would construe the removal of the fact that someone is Jewish as vandalism. I know I don't. Religion doesn't have any implications for hockey playing talent. So we may have to agree to disagree on this one. Yes -- I saw that. There was also a personal non-template note on the article talk page. As to the meta issue, there are many halls of fame (e.g., here and here) and books (e.g., here) that of course have a different view. In any event, whether attached to a template (twice; are you suggesting that Resolute's personalized note was deficient because it was attached to the template, and that to have full effect he should have left it as a separate message?) or not (on the article talk page once), there were efforts at personalized communication, and to my main point addressing your concern, the photo and article suggests strongly that the IP is not MC. Copyediting drive Jan 2012

I am thinking of participating. Managed to get the page size working (edited your instructions). Now looking at a recent thorough edit I did on Juan Roque (Zape Confraternity). Discovered I took it from 1115 words to 847. Not sure why, in general, word length is a measure of copyediting skill. Does one always expect to reduce an article in length? (I remembered that that article was one I reduced greatly)

I have just edited The Daughters of the Late Colonel from the request list. I have reduced it by 80 words. Have I been too harsh? There was almost nothing to criticize about grammar and spelling, it just seemed wordy and flowery in style. I just figured out (from the FAQ) the reasoning behind the word counts . Doh!

  • Q: I'm confused by the word count measurements implied in the barnstar awards section (i.e. "At least 2,000 words", etc.). Is this supposed to be a measurement of the total number of words in each article, or of the difference in the number of words between the start and finish of the copyedit?
  • A: It's the initial number of words in each article before any editing is done.

What to do with this one?

Hi Dianna. I've spotted someone taking on jobs from the Requests page who really hasn't the ability to do it. Subject/verb disagreement, run-on sentences, unnecessary content removal, you name it, they do it. I suspect this editor may be emotionally vulnerable. Has this kind of situation been encountered before, and do we know how to handle it? I'm asking The Utahraptor too. I don't think it's urgent, so please don't interrupt your Christmas for it. What's been done in the past is to do a review of one or two of their copy edits and give specific advice about what could have been done differently or better. Chaosdruid has done a few of these and I have also done one or two. It usually ends with the editor realising they are not ready for the job and they take off to do other kinds of edits. Apologies for the tardiness, but after switching electricity suppliers on Dec 23rd, guess what? ...

Yup, you guessed it ... the electricity went off late Christmas Eve until being restored this morning! Lol, what a nightmare. Luckily I had already arranged to be somewhere for Christmas day, but it did impede my sending of Christmas cheer and wishes; both on Wiki as well as e-cards to my family and friends who are now overseas.

I know there are 669 members who have placed the Guild user box on their page, but we have additional members on 'this list, many of whom also have the user box on their page. That is a cheery bit of news, as I think the number of articles tagged for copy edit has grown dramatically as well, but I don't know how to verify. Any thoughts? --Dianna (talk) 23:57, 27 December 2011 (UTC)
As a comparison, last year's growth was 176 members. So, this year had a larger growth compared to last year as there were 90 more signups than last year. I'm not sure how to calculate the number of tagged articles as the numbers change dynamically. If a photo is owned by Getty Images, we are not allowed to use it. The photo of Eva does not say who took the photo or what the source was. I have notified Frankonno of these concerns. Too bad; now we only have the picture with the dogs :( --Dianna (talk) 04:44, 28 December 2011 (UTC)

The copy edit drive starts on January 1. Only articles completed during the month of January count towards the drive totals. There are instructions on the Drive main page, and the record keeping is done on the current drive page. Please read over this material and let me know if there is anything you do not understand. There are three problems with the article. Number one, a lot of people don't understand what we mean by old-style dates. So they remove the [O.S. 5 January]. Second problem: they flip it back and forth between starting his name with a C and a K. Of course neither is correct; it starts with the Cryllic letter К. Third problem: it is a target for vandalism of the "has a big penis" variety. The person asking for unprotection has 12 edits, several of which are adding year links, which is something that is not encouraged any more.
