Content removed based on copyright Rdenney

Greetings - I saw this notice of removal: remove copyright content copied from https://traviscountyhistorical.blogspot.com/2021/02/who-were-indigenous-tribes.html

I'm actually OK w/ that, although curious why it was a copyright problem given I wrote the article? I actually added that because someone previously had referenced Tonkawas, but didn't even know how to spell the name. There were certainly more tribes in the Austin area than Tonkawas, and in relation to El Camino there were other tribes more likely utilizing that trail.

Anyway, I'm ok w/ the omission, was just trying to improve upon someone's previous entry. rdenney (talk) 02:36, 4 May 2022 (UTC)

@Rdenney: You may own the copyright but we still do not. Ian.thomson (talk) 10:25, 4 May 2022 (UTC)
Thanks for that clarification. So what's the proper way to treat these situations? Just avoid simple cut and paste?
Also, second question, I know there is a warning about use of blogger as a citation; for better or worse that is Travis County Historical Commission's mechanism for writing articles. Advice on how to address this? rdenney (talk) 12:31, 4 May 2022 (UTC)
In order to use the prose from the blog, we need to have documentation that shows the copyright holders have given permission for the material to be copied to this website and have released the content under a compatible license. Wikipedia has procedures in place for this purpose. Please see WP:Donating copyrighted materials for an explanation of how to do it. There's a sample permission email at WP:Consent. A second point: Citing your own blog (or any blog for that matter) is not a good idea; they are not typically considered as reliable sources. It would be better to write some new content specifically for Wikipedia, using sources other than the blog itself as citations. — Diannaa (talk) 12:48, 4 May 2022 (UTC)

Glad to see you are working on Nazis

This is related. [1]. (At least some members of the group collaborated with Germans in Poland; extent is controversial, but that is not the point.) I was coming in to ask you if you thought that all was well here.

I have had to take a break from the page and don’t want to intervene if the outcome is satisfactory. However, the reason for my concern is that the editor who is enforcing copyright is rather new, and the two who are tag-teaming her are the reason why I am having to take a break from the page. Marcelus seems to be editing in good faith, if possibly insufficient attention to copyright. Elinruby (talk) 22:33, 3 May 2022 (UTC)

2 possible copyvio questions for you

I have 2 copyvio questions for you on the "Ukrainian Insurgent Army war against Russian occupation" article here [2]. One of the two, (Revision 1085767592) is a bit more complicated because: 1) the editor will not cite the source he/she used, and 2) the editor reverted back his/her edit that contains the possible copyvio. When I first noticed it, I posted my concerns on the Talk Page & simultaneously replaced revision 1085767592. I have no idea if either are copyvio but I do have concerns they may be. Since I got nowhere on the Talk Page with the first one, I decided it's best if I ask you about both of them.

1st. Revision 1086035660 (here [3] I noticed this one this morning.

In late 1939, Nazi Germany accommodated OUN leaders in the city of Kraków, the capital of the General Government in the German-occupied portion of Poland.

From source: (page 74) in 'archives.gov' "Hitlers Shadow" link here [4]. .

In late 1939 the Germans housed OUN leaders in the city of Kraków, the capital of the General Government in the German-occupied portion of Poland.

2nd. (More complicated one) Revision 1085767592 (here [5].) 1. Does not cite sources and 2. has possible copyvio in 8 sentences. This is the one I brought up on the Talk Page. Link to Talk Page [6]). On that talk page, I compared the wording in Revision 1085767592 to the uncited sources used & underlined what I felt are copyvio. Rather than me cluttering your talk page, I thought it'd be best if you just go to that talk page to see what I'm talking about. Thank you & best regards, BetsyRMadison (talk) 15:12, 4 May 2022 (UTC)

P.S. For your convenience, here's the link [7] to what I replaced Revision 1085767592 with. And here's the link [8] to the editor's revert/revision edit. In this revert/revision, in sentence 4, the editor only swapped words around from their earlier revision (1085767592). No other changes were made in any of the other sentences. Also in this revert/revision, they still didn't include their sources. BetsyRMadison (talk) 15:39, 4 May 2022 (UTC)
@Diannaa - The source says:
In late 1939 the Germans housed OUN leaders in Krakow, then the capital of the German-occupied General Government. -->[9] (page 74)
Not what they falsely claim above:
In late 1939 the Germans housed OUN leaders in the city of Kraków, the capital of the General Government in the German-occupied portion of Poland.

It would be nice if BetsyRMadison was more careful editing this topic area, they make constant mistakes -->[10] - GizzyCatBella🍁 17:20, 4 May 2022 (UTC)

Diannaa I just stopped by to let you know that I ran earwhig and that looked pretty good; does that mean that Betsy probably got everything? I was trying to help her when I asked about this. Thank you for the link; I will use it next time I have a concern. 12:00, 5 May 2022 (UTC)

Hello Diannaa! I had modified some content in that article so that it wouldn't violate copyright criteria, but you still deleted it due to copyright issues. Can you demonstrate some questions to me? It will be better if you also provide some solutions here. Thanks for helping.--波斯波莉斯 (talk) 02:40, 7 May 2022 (UTC)

It sounds like you are looking for some advice as to how to write for Wikipedia.
Content has to be written in your own words and not include any wording from the source material. One thing I find that works for me is to read over the source material and then pretend I am verbally describing the topic to a friend in my own words. Stuff should also be presented in a different order where possible. Summarize rather than paraphrase. This will typically result in your version being much shorter than the source document. There's some reading material on this topic at Wikipedia:Close paraphrasing and/or have a look at the material at Paraphrase: Write It in Your Own Words. Check out the links in the menu on the left for some exercises to try. Or study this module aimed at WikiEd students.— Diannaa (talk) 12:49, 7 May 2022 (UTC)

Thanks again for your meaningful and constructive suggestions! By your review, I find that I had ignored problems of slight plagiarism and structure. And I also omit former content to a new summary as follows:

According to J Marshall, Chongqing also regard opium as a key commodity in the smuggling from KMT controlled zone including Sichuan and Yunnan to Japanese occupied zone for compensating urgent government expeditions and military costing during protracted war era. To raise necessary revenue, Chongqing also permitted Shanghai Green Gang leader Du Yuesheng possessing many connections with Japanese controlled territory to manage opium smuggling business. Du's operation was under general Taili who took charge of anti-smuggling bureau’s supervision.
Former content: Opium was a key commodity in the smuggling trade because of its high value per unit of weight. The Chongqing government authorized Du Yue-sheng (under Tai Li'supervision) to take charge of opium smuggling in order to raise vitally needed revenues. The Nationalists shipped opium from Sichuan and Yunnan to his agents for sale in Japanese-held territories.(Much of this opium returned in the form of heroin.) When the Japanese seized Hong Kong, Macao, and other coastal ports in 1941, Du moved inland but continued to manage the opium trade to these newly occupied territories. (For more specific information, see Opium and the Politics of Gangsterism in Nationalist China, 1927–1945 page 24 [12])

Please check the new one.— 波斯波莉斯 (talk) 04:15, 8 May 2022 (UTC)

The new version is okay from a copyright point of view. It's difficult to read and understand though.— Diannaa (talk) 12:04, 8 May 2022 (UTC)

I paraphrased from those sources, as opposed to directly copying from them. Do you mind restoring the draft to my talk page so I can continue working on it? FobTown (talk) 14:01, 7 May 2022 (UTC)

Sorry but we can't host copyright content anywhere on Wikipedia, not even in sandboxes or on user talk pages. By the way it's not a draft - it's a mainspace article.— Diannaa (talk) 14:41, 7 May 2022 (UTC)

Response to Speedy deletion of Draft:Jorge Rigamonti

Hi Dianna, I had inferred that the content on the page https://www.behance.net/Rigamonti/resume was under the Creative Commons Attribution-ShareAlike 3.0 Unported License (CC BY-SA) since other pages of Jorge Rigamonti's website on https://www.behance.net/Rigamonti indicated that the text was under that license. After you raised the issue, I raised it with the author and the page https://www.behance.net/Rigamonti/resume now clearly states in the "Sources" section: "Text in this page is co-licensed under the Creative Commons Attribution-ShareAlike 3.0 Unported License (CC BY-SA) and the GNU Free Documentation License (GFDL) (unversioned)." Based on that, could you undo the deletion of the Draft:Jorge Rigamonti page I had written? It took me a while to translate and paraphrase information from various sources so I would really appreciate if the Draft:Jorge Rigamonti could be reinstated with its full content. Thank you and regards, Archifibonacci (talk) 14:13, 7 May 2022 (UTC)

I have restored the draft and added the required attribution. The fact that you've been in contact with the subject of the draft leads me to believe you may have a conflict of interest. I've placed some info regarding that on your talk page. — Diannaa (talk) 14:39, 7 May 2022 (UTC)
Thank you Diannaa for restoring the Draft:Jorge Rigamonti page. I have reviewed the Wikipedia:Conflict of interest page and confirm that there is no conflict of interest in my case. For some sections I extracted information from the website https://www.behance.net/Rigamonti/resume which was put together by family members of Jorge Rigamonti as indicated in it. There is a contact email in that page. However, that website is not the only source I used as indicated in the references of the Draft:Jorge Rigamonti page. Simplicissimus & Copyright

As far as I can ascertain File:What Does Hitler Look Like?.png in 2023 shall fall under the ambit of the more-than-70-years rule (for which there are various templates). I had been under the impression, despite not knowing German, that Simplicissimus as a whole was in the public domain. So does this source deserve a seven-decade rolling project of image release into the Creative Commons, or what? I can't be the only editor not conversant with the intricacies of Germany copyright law, and as a practical matter I don't want to put anything up on Wikipedia that doesn't stick. Thanks! kencf0618 (talk) 03:43, 11 May 2022 (UTC)

Hi Kencf0618. The uploader did not put any license template on the upload, and I don't think it's a valuable image for us to keep, so I am not interested in investigating its copyright status. If you wish to do so, the place to start is the Hirtle chart.— Diannaa (talk) 03:49, 11 May 2022 (UTC)

Owais Al-Qarni's new articles

I had already removed the copyrighted text, and left the attributed quotations. ─ The Aafī (talk) 14:48, 11 May 2022 (UTC)
The editor copied compatibly licensed text, and provided the legally required attribution. You should not have removed it. He did everything right.— Diannaa (talk) 21:45, 11 May 2022 (UTC)
I have restored the missing content and tweeked the attribution to make it more obvious.— Diannaa (talk) 21:49, 11 May 2022 (UTC)
Thanks, I feel I missed the attribution case, because I didn't find it explicit. ─ The Aafī on Mobile (talk) 04:08, 12 May 2022 (UTC)

Hello Diannaa. The source I was referring to in the article about the lative case was published under the Creative Commons Attribution-Share Alike 3.0 Unported license (CC BY-SA 3.0), as stated on page 2 of said source. As far as I understand, it means that it can be freely copied onto Wikipedia. Hopefully my additions can be restored. Thanks in advance, Amtin (talk) 15:13, 11 May 2022 (UTC)

I have restored the content. We have to give attribution so that our readers are made aware that we copied the prose rather than wrote it ourselves. It's also required under the terms of the license. I've added the attribution for this particular instance. Please make sure that you follow this licensing requirement when copying from compatibly-licensed material in the future. Sorry for the mistake.— Diannaa (talk) 21:39, 11 May 2022 (UTC)

Doubts regarding Khuda Bakhsh's Wikipedia page

Hello Mam, Some of the sources like the official website of the Khuda Bakhsh Oriental Public Library are available under Public Domain since it is a Government website. Anyone can use it for their references under the Right to Information Act, 2005. The same applies to the Ministry of Culture, Government of India's dedicated page for Khuda Bakhsh Library that contains the details about the same. I have the permission to use those contents from the website and some of the Khuda Bakhsh's Wikipedia page has contents that were deleted due to the Copy/Paste of the exact words from the website.

Since I have copy-pasted some of the sentences as I wanted to make the Person's Page more Authentic. I will re-write the sentences with my own words to avoid Copyright - Violations and will give the references which are available in Public Domain. So, is it fine mam if I do that? Syed Sadique Hussain (talk) 05:32, 15 May 2022 (UTC)

Actually, government works in India are protected by copyright for sixty years from publication date. See commons:Commons:Copyright rules by territory/India; https://copyright.gov.in/documents/copyrightrules1957.pdf. Regardless, the places where I found the content include the BBC website, the Times of India, and others. (Not government websites.) It's okay to use your sources as sources of information, but don't copy the text. Cite your sources. — Diannaa (talk) 13:54, 15 May 2022 (UTC)

Probably copywrite infringement at Pachygyria

Hello Diannaa, I removed a portion of Pachygyria which was a large paragraph copy-pasted from a medical journal, which was also written in an inappropriate tone for Wikipedia. I am requesting you to look into it, and do revision deletion if necessary. You can see my comments in Talk:Pachygyria#Removed_inappropriate_section, but I already removed the probably-infringing material from my own comments on the Talk page after I looked up the policy. I am concerned this deletion will be reverted if revision deletion is not carried out, since it was already reverted about 2 seconds after I deleted it. Somebody restored the infringing material for no apparent reason. Thank you for your help. 2601:441:4400:1740:A18B:5282:CC9F:9030 (talk) 02:59, 18 May 2022 (UTC)

Copyvio in Bareilly

Hi, I came across this ancient copyvio in Bareilly, History of Bareilly and Bareilly via "Conybeare, p. 677" footnote. The footnote and related text are copied from here. Since this is such an old copyvio intermixed with other text, I am ill equipped to deal with it. Can you please take a look? Many thanks. Renata3 00:13, 19 May 2022 (UTC)

? The purported source paper is dated January 2016, at which point we already have the content for many years. So it looks like the author of that paper copied from us rather than the other way around.— Diannaa (talk) 00:43, 19 May 2022 (UTC)
It's very weird how the live link is presented on UPenn website. It's a PDF of 2016 Internet Archive copy, but the original webpage dates back to at least May 2007. Renata3 01:49, 19 May 2022 (UTC)
Regardless, I checked back as far as 2012 on Bareilly and the content was already there. There's no way I am doing revision deletion on 10 years or more worth of edits. They do need to be cleaned though, but an admin is not the only person who can do that step.— Diannaa (talk) 02:33, 19 May 2022 (UTC)

Hi

Getting my bearings on Wikipedia once again. Much has changed since the last time I visited; many folks I've searched up don't seem to edit much (or at all) anymore. Glad to see that you're still helping keep the lights on :) /wiae /tlk 03:04, 19 May 2022 (UTC)

Hi, welcome back, good to see you :)— Diannaa (talk) 12:49, 19 May 2022 (UTC)
Good catch here. For the longest time I thought a link to the article from which text was copied was sufficient for attribution purposes. But now I see at WP:RIA that belated attribution should make clear when the relevant text entered the page (emphasis mine). I will start doing that myself—I have already stolen your edit summary for future use :) /wiae /tlk 11:40, 25 May 2022 (UTC)
It was user:DanCherek's idea to include a link to Wikipedia:RIA in the edit summary. (I adapted that bit from his boilerplate)— Diannaa (talk) 23:02, 25 May 2022 (UTC)
Having just seen the one you use, I like that you put it in a parenthetical at the end. I might borrow that too! DanCherek (talk) 23:12, 25 May 2022 (UTC)

Same COPYVIO edit's back here; reverted them already. Nate (chatter) 00:27, 20 May 2022 (UTC)

Copyvios and apparent self-promotion

Hi Diannaa, please see Seigneur for an addition I reverted and which I've tagged as a copyvio, and which were totally unrelated to th article's topic. The IP user also added a photo to this article and to several others, which I've also removed. I'm just letting you know in case there's any blowback from my deletions. Thanks as always. Hi BilCat, sorry for the delay in replying. The article has already been dealt with by another admin. I have nominated the image for deletion, it appears elsewhere online. — Diannaa (talk) 21:03, 20 May 2022 (UTC)

Teahouse question

Hi Diannaa. Would you mind taking a look at WP:THQ#Should 2 really long obituaries be included in a biography article, word-for-word?? It appears the content was added a couple of years ago. If it just needs rewriting, then perhaps revedeleting won't be necessary. -- Marchjuly (talk) 08:21, 20 May 2022 (UTC)

Hi Marchjuly. I wouldn't do revision deletion for this, for two reasons: (1) The content was framed as 2 quotations, with block quote templates. Hence not a copyvio per se; (2) We are no longer doing huge revision deletions that span many years/many diffs/ many editors' contributions.— Diannaa (talk) 20:57, 20 May 2022 (UTC)
Thank you for looking at this. Another admin (Nthep) went in a removed the problematic content and also explained about (2). I think any other issues can be resolved via normal editing from here on. -- Marchjuly (talk) 21:05, 20 May 2022 (UTC)

Hello! You deleted the section on Women and the British Black Power Movement on the British Black Panthers main page. You kindly gave lots of reasons why it was not acceptable. I can see from reading this page that you are a copyright specialist so I would like to learn from the comments. Is it possible for you to send me the deleted text somehow so I can see how to apply your comments to that text? I did not use any visuals and I did not copy another wikipedia page so I am unsure why you sent me info on that. But I am sure the paraphrasing part is something I need to learn so that I can rewrite the section to pass muster at my second attempt. Balance person (talk) 17:07, 21 May 2022 (UTC)

Hi Balance Person! I have sent you the removed section via email. The message I posted on your talk page is a template, and it's pretty comprehensive, so some of the material does not apply to your addition. You might try comparing the source document with your proposed text using an online tool such as https://app.copyleaks.com/text-compare. The place I found the matching content was https://lwbooks.co.uk/leading-women-of-the-black-radical-movement.
General advice: Content has to be written in your own words and not include any wording from the source material. One thing I find that works for me is to read over the source material and then pretend I am verbally describing the topic to a friend in my own words. Stuff should also be presented in a different order where possible. Summarize rather than paraphrase. This will typically result in your version being much shorter than the source document. Melpazhur Mana Restoration

Dear Diana,

First of all, I would like to state that I have been visiting Melpazhur Mana for 3 years. I know the spiritual richness, cultural importance and deep history that the place has. It is a hub for Indian Knowledge System and Chinmaya Mission members have been taking care of that place. Now, I understand that it seems that content which was posted by Venugopal V V was propaganda, but as a liberal I must say the place, Melpazhur Mana, is not a place of administration blasphemy.

I request you to undo the speedy deletion. I can provide original, non-biased, neutral content.

Thanks, Aditya Raja — Preceding unsigned comment added by Adityarajatedx (talkcontribs) 16:22, 26 May 2022 (UTC)

I can't restore it. The content I removed was a violation of our copyright policy. I suggest you start over in draft space. See Wikipedia:Drafts for how to do that.— Diannaa (talk) 19:55, 26 May 2022 (UTC)

The content you removed was sourced to the Metro and was not a copyvio of the Daily Mail or anywhere else, unless of course the Metro copied it. I simply restore copy that had been deleted as having no source (not for being a copyvio), edited it quite substantially, and added the Metro source which supported everything I had readded. Please restore it. Thank you. Lard Almighty (talk) 04:53, 27 May 2022 (UTC)

I've readded the removed detail using other sources. There should no longer be any copyvio issues. Lard Almighty (talk) 05:55, 27 May 2022 (UTC)
The content was originally added in this edit and was copied verbatim from the Daily Mail. The IP's edit was removed in this edit by Code Talker because the IP had not cited a source. (You can no longer view these edits because I've hidden them due to the copyright violation.) Then, you re-added the same copyright-violating text, but added a citation to the Metro. The content was not copied from the Metro; it does not match it at all; I checked that aspect yesterday. And you had no way of realising at the time that the prose was not okay to re-add unless you checked it for copyvio before re-adding it. Your new version is of course okay from a copyright point of view. Sorry for the confusion; I thought the sequence of events was already pretty clear from the article history and my note on your talk page. — Diannaa (talk) 14:18, 27 May 2022 (UTC)

Possible copyvio at Glyphosate-based herbicides

I saw this: [15], and did this: [16]. I figure that you will know what to do next. Thanks very much for your work on this problem. --Tryptofish (talk) 20:57, 27 May 2022 (UTC)

Bradberry (https://link.springer.com/article/10.2165/00139709-200423030-00003) was first cited by Seraphim System in 2018. Diff of Glyphosate-based herbicides. However some subsequent content was cited to Bradberry in subsequent edits. I will list it at WP:CP. Interested editors will have a week or so to undertake a rewrite of the section, or it will likely be removed in its entirety. — Diannaa (talk) 22:35, 27 May 2022 (UTC)

Copy-paste moves

Hi Diannaa. When I posted something about non-free content use on the user talk page of Dinnerbrone a few days ago, it was added to my watchlist; so, I noticed this after it was posted early today. I don't know which would be the common title for this sport, but it appears that Dinnerbone recreated lots of existing pages with "Muay" (as opposed to "Muaythai") in title by simply copying and pasting content. Perhaps not much more needs to be done here since another editor seems to be sorting things out, but not sure whether the now attribution problems with pages like Muay at the 2009 Asian Martial Arts Games. -- Marchjuly (talk) 21:48, 29 May 2022 (UTC)

I looked at Muay at the 2009 Asian Martial Arts Games for example, and I don't think we need to do anything as the page is now a redirect and the article was originally at that location anyways.— Diannaa (talk) 19:06, 30 May 2022 (UTC)
Thanks Diannaa. Most of the other copied-and pasted moves are probably of a similar nature in that they were redirected back to the original article. -- Marchjuly (talk) 20:31, 30 May 2022 (UTC)

For template removal

Thank you for your edit on the draft:Amhara genocide drafted article. I have been working through your recommendations to improve the quality of the writing and to take out the unnecessary quotations from the references, and the body of the article. Could you please let me know if there still red flags. i wanted to verify with you before any attempt to remove the template you added Petra0922 (talk) 17:04, 30 May 2022 (UTC)

I have removed the tags for now. When you submit the draft for publication, your reviewer will do a more in-depth review and may add other templates at that time.— Diannaa (talk) 19:09, 30 May 2022 (UTC)
I just noticed you removed the template! Your recommendation certainly helped improving the article. Thank you. Petra0922 (talk) 19:33, 30 May 2022 (UTC)

Hey, I've actually checked the copyright on the edited content and it appears to be released at https://suttacentral.net/mn-mulapariyayavagga under a CC0 1.0 license, which would make it public domain and not a copyvio. Their licensing terms [17] clearly indicates that includes all text, design, software, and images created by SuttaCentral or persons working for SuttaCentral, on the domain suttacentral.net, or any domains or subdomains owned or managed by SuttaCentral, unless otherwise specified. I don't believe a revdel and removal of addition is necessary in this case. Dark-World25 (talk) 01:59, 1 June 2022 (UTC)

It's also at GitHub, where there is no detectable license. If their intention is to release it under license, the license should be visible at the top of the page. It's also present at this e-book, where there is no detectable license.
However the e-book lists Bhante Sujato as the author of the translations and indicates that the material is indeed licensed under a CC-0 public domain dedication. When copying compatibly licensed material, it's important to add attribution. So I will re-add the translations and add the attribution. Sorry for the mistake. I also found the same text at http://majjhimanikaya.sutta.mysticlotus.org/ but I now believe they have copied Sujato's work without attribution and are not the originators of the translations. — Diannaa (talk) 02:40, 1 June 2022 (UTC)

Recently deleted draft

Hey, I noticed that you were the admin who took action on the Rad Dixon draft. I strongly suspect that the account may be part of a larger UPE/sock ring given its name and the recreation of an previously deleted draft with the same contents. I've had a chat to User:GeneralNotability on discord about it and I was informed to compose information and then send it to wikipedia via email since it involves off wiki content (the now blocked creator of the page seems to indicate that they are part of a PR agency). I would very much appreciate it if you could keep an eye out for new accounts creating music and musician related pages that had previously been deleted or if you could help in any other way. User:Vallacar Transit Corporation/sandbox: promotion

Hi, I would like you to delete all the revisions on User:Vallacar Transit Corporation/sandbox because it's a promotion. Thank you.--143.44.165.97 (talk) 03:47, 5 June 2022 (UTC)

That's not a valid reason for deletion. Regardless, there's nothing there but an infobox.— Diannaa (talk) 13:54, 5 June 2022 (UTC)

Hi Diannaa, could you take a look at the above article. I believe there's at least some copyright infringement based on the one source in the article, the subject's website. I'm going to be removing most of the body of the article anyway as blatantly promotional and unreliably sourced, but before I do that, it's probably best to clean up any infringement. (The original creator of the article was blocked for copyright infringement.)

Unfortunately, whatever is done, particularly my large removal, is not going to please the subject, Sigurd Hole, with whom I am already having a conversation, but there's not much that can be done about that.

Thanks!--Bbb23 (talk) 13:37, 6 June 2022 (UTC)

Copyright

Hi @Diannaa, I hope you are well. A while ago you helped me understand copyright policies here, and I thought you may be able to help me again? I was editing Jonny Lake, a chef who has no free image available anywhere. I found one and tried to follow policy - I knew I had to upload directly to Wikipedia, not Commons, as it was a fair use claim. I left a detailed explanation for each of the 10 criteria. However it got flagged for deletion by a bot. I did try to defend the use but no human wrote back to me and it was deleted. I do not want to have the same thing happen, so I could like to run a hypothetical by you. I recently created Michael Sexton. Can I not use any of these images based on a fair use claim, as his portrait? What are the alternatives when an article subject has got no free photo? I understand that if lets say, I was adding a recent paparazzi photo of a celebrity into an article, then it does not respect the earning opportunity of the photographer and is less likely to be fair use. However one of the images listed, particularly an appropriate portrait taken from this article is I think far less likely to have earning opportunity or any risk of a claim against Wikipedia. That website does have a creative commons licence, but unhelpfully omits the type and so I cannot be sure it is compatible with our project.

TLDR; How can I get a portrait photo for an article on an individual if there is no free version? Do we just have to leave it without one? I am doing lots of public servants/judges where a photo would help the article.

Thanks! MaxnaCarter (talk) 08:32, 7 June 2022 (UTC)

Sorry but we don't allow non-free photos of living people. NFCC#1 requires not only that no free image be available, but that one could not be created. Exceptions are very rare. So you won't be able to upload non-free pics of either of these people. See Wikipedia:Files for deletion/2012 December 8#File:Raymond Reierson.jpg for a detailed discussion of one case. — Diannaa (talk) 13:04, 7 June 2022 (UTC)

Copyright warning

Hello Diannaa,

I’m confused because I don’t understand the following message:

Your edit to Abortion in China has been removed in whole or in part, as it appears to have added copyrighted material to Wikipedia without evidence of permission from the copyright holder. If you are the copyright holder, please read Wikipedia:Donating copyrighted materials for more information on uploading your material to Wikipedia. You may use external websites or publications as a source of information, but not as a source of content, such as sentences or images—you must write using your own words. Wikipedia takes copyright very seriously, and persistent violators of our copyright policy will be blocked from editing. See Wikipedia:Copying text from other sources for more information. Hi Diannaa. I saw that most of the content that I had added to the Florida Space Institute wikipedia was taken down for copyright. If the copyright holder wishes to release this material under a compatible license, please see WP:Requesting copyright permission for an explanation of how to do it. There's a sample permission email at WP:Consent. — Diannaa (talk) 22:56, 9 June 2022 (UTC)

Hi @Diannaa: I removed a big block of copyvio from this Hawala and crime. It all taken from [19]. scope_creepTalk 22:49, 9 June 2022 (UTC)

It actually came from Hawala. Checking the user's contribs reveals all. Also note the edit summary on the initial edit, not a great attribution, but it's there. Purported source webpage is a Wikipedia mirror. — Diannaa (talk) 23:03, 9 June 2022 (UTC)

Re: "Copying within Wikipedia requires attribution (second request)"

Hi Diannaa, sorry about copying from one WP article to another without attribution, it was an oversight. It struck me that the notice you left on my talk page had the header, "Copying within Wikipedia requires attribution (second request)". Are you keeping score? It seems odd to focus on a minor infraction rather than the thousands (literally) of free hours of work I've donated to Wikipedia. As you know, I think, I've removed quite a bit of copyvio material on WP myself. Carlstak (talk)

I'm not focusing on minor infractions, I am simply going through the reports at CopyPatrol like I do every day. https://copypatrol.toolforge.org/en/Diannaa (talk) 03:13, 10 June 2022 (UTC)
What does "second request" mean? I get a 404 "Page Not Found" message with that link. Carlstak (talk) 04:00, 10 June 2022 (UTC)
Sorry, the dash in my signature was interfering with the url. It should work now.
"Second request" is because there was a first request. — Diannaa (talk) 12:06, 10 June 2022 (UTC)
Okay, thanks. So the wiki software is keeping score? At what point are sanctions imposed? Since copyvios of WP content are pretty straightforward, and the notices are so impersonal anyway, it seems to me these tasks could be handled by a bot, saving members of your project a lot of time, besides the fact that keeping score is insulting to hard-working editors. We waste so much time unnecessarily defending articles from damage by vandals, kooks, and cranks, when simply requiring all editors to register would eliminate a lot of it. I feel insulted, undervalued, and pilloried on top of the disrespect. Bemoaning in some quarters about the attrition of editors rings hollow. Carlstak (talk) 14:33, 10 June 2022 (UTC)
Sorry that my action hurt your feelings. The way I personally handle these is to give 3-4 reminders and then give up, and then simply add the required attribution myself without notifying the editor that I have done so. Bots cannot handle the CopyPatrol tasks, for several reasons. I will post more info later when I get home from work if you are interested. — Ninja Diannaa (Talk) 15:57, 10 June 2022 (UTC)
I would be interested, thanks. The first request was from 8 July 2016, almost six years ago, so that being dredged up felt like a slap in the face. The "anybody can edit" policy makes some of us feel like drones doing constant clean up after vandals and idiots; I realize that "cleanup" is basically what you and other admins do, and I have great respect for that. It seems counterproductive that we have to do so much extra work because of that policy—I spend at least as much time doing cleanup and damage control as I do creating content. That makes me feel like Sisyphus, laboriously pushing that boulder up a hill only to have it roll back down, for all eternity. So the reminder of a six-year-old faux pas seems kinda cold.;-) Carlstak (talk) 15:12, 11 June 2022 (UTC)
Hi Carlstak. You might look at the issue from my point of view. Attribution is required by the terms of our license. A user of your tenure should know that by now. I know that you do know it, because I told you so myself several years ago. If you don't include the attribution, I end up having to do so myself as part of clearing the items listed at CopyPatrol. Then I remind the editor that they should be doing this themselves. I typically do so regardless of the length of service of the involved editor or the quality or quantity of their edits. For you to come here and imply that I have done something wrong to remind you of this licensing requirement seems kinda backwards to me. I have done nothing wrong. — Diannaa (talk) 15:25, 11 June 2022 (UTC)
I do know it. It was a small oversight from six years ago, and so was the recent error. I didn't do such on purpose, but you seem to think I did. I find that insulting. So I have black marks against me forever in your book? I consider that harsh, especially considering how much time I've spent checking content that seemed to be copyvio, and removed it myself when it was. I didn't say you did anything wrong, I said dredging up a six-year-old faux pas seems "kinda cold". It's a cold case, and bringing it up seems nitpicky. Do other editors in your project do that? For the record, I don't mind being notified of a recent error, but excavating old transgressions seems needless. It's not like the first mistake happened yesterday.Carlstak (talk) 16:29, 11 June 2022 (UTC)
Sorry. — Diannaa (talk) 16:35, 11 June 2022 (UTC)

follow up from my edit for Ben Cardin

Hi Diane,

You invited me to post my questions and follow up to your message on my Talk page.

TLDR: I think your accusations are actually false, but you permanently erased all record of my edit so it is impossible to prove now.

Oh ok...I was pretty sure I did it completely correctly actually. I would go prove it but I see you've permanently erased any and all records of my edit in the history of his article. So I'll take your word for it. But yeah pretty sure I didn't just copy and paste source material into Wikipedia, I definitely rewrote it in my own words and anything that was a quote was definitely in quotation marks. While your list of a bunch of things not to do that my edit supposedly violated is helpful, can you please give me a specific example - what exactly did I write that violated which rule? Because, like I said, my edit has completely vanished with strikethrough font from the official record of the page's history. I've never seen that before on Wikipedia. Crazy. Thank you in advance for providing me with the proof and concrete example, as it will be a good learning experience for me. :) --Eatthecrow (talk) 20:59, 10 June 2022 (UTC)

Should be good now?

Hi Diannaa. The content[20] has now been rewritten.[21] - LouisAragon (talk) 10:17, 11 June 2022 (UTC)

It's not ready - there's still some overlap. Please look at https://copypatrol.toolforge.org/en/?id=86112049 and click on the iThenticate report link. Some or all of the highlighted text is still present and needs to be re-written on your own words please. — Diannaa (talk) 12:21, 11 June 2022 (UTC)
Please correct me if mistaken, but are we looking at the same thing? Me and user:HistoryofIran largely rewrote the article here.[[22] As far as I can see, this new version doesn't contain copyvio's. The iThenticate report link is based on the original live version as far as I can see, and not the new rewritten version. - LouisAragon (talk) 12:50, 11 June 2022 (UTC)
Edit: I guess I have to copy-paste this new version into the live article? - LouisAragon (talk) 12:50, 11 June 2022 (UTC)
Edit2: done[23] - LouisAragon (talk) 12:53, 11 June 2022 (UTC)
Please don't paste it into the article. It's not ready, and an admin or other experienced copyright is supposed to do that step. There's still a lot of overlap, with the content only lightly paraphrased, and a lot of remaining overlap. Content is presented in the same order using almost identical wording. Comparing with the iThenticate report, I see the following examples:
  • Source says "...been a western-related target of attack amidst political disputes between the Iraninan government ". Temp page says "persistently been a target of Iran's post-1979 dogma during political disputes the government and Western powers"
  • Source says "constant inclination...towards learning English has always outweighed...regime's restrictive policies". Temp page says "positive outlook of the people of Iran in relation to learning English has consistently outweighed the post-1979 Iranian regime's prohibitory policies".
  • Source says "Western style education and foreign languages started growing". Temp page says "Western-style education in addition to foreign languages started gaining prominence"
In conclusion, I've only checked the very first part of the temp page and have already found three examples that need to be re-worded. Spot checks elsewhere in the document show the problem is pervasive. Changing a few words here and there is inadequate paraphrasing. Content is presented in the same order using very similar wording and sentence structure. It needs to be completely re-written in your own words. — Diannaa (talk) 13:13, 11 June 2022 (UTC)
Thank you for the detailed response Diannaa. Well, then I would like to have the article deleted. Are you the right addressee for such a request? I just don't have the will nor time atm to rewrite/paraphrase it once again. I can re-create the article at some point in the future when I have more spare time. Sorry. - LouisAragon (talk) 13:29, 11 June 2022 (UTC)
I will delete it under G7, author requests deletion. (The temp page will be deleted too.) So sorry to have to do that. It's a very worthwhile topic and I hope you have time to get to it in the future. Best wishes, — Diannaa (talk) 13:37, 11 June 2022 (UTC)
No worries Diana. You're doing what you're supposed to do and acting according the guidelines. I've just been a bit too zealous this time, should've spend a bit more time working on it. - LouisAragon (talk) 15:06, 11 June 2022 (UTC)

Regarding The Shepherd (The Chosen)

In regards to your comment on my draft of Draft:The Shepherd (The Chosen), I simply copied the plot section from the main article of The Chosen (TV series) about "The Shepherd", and it seems that this specific plot description was written way before [April 26, 2021], while on the other hand, the plot provided by the Fandom user was written later on [December 10, 2021], thus, the user who contributed on Fandom was the one who copied from the user here on Wiki and then pasted into that certain Fandom page. — Radiant Fellow (talk) 12:58, 13 June 2022 (UTC)

Sorry for the mistake. When you copy from one Wikipedia article to another, you need to provide attribution. This is done by saying in your edit summary that the material was copied, and where you got it. Please have a look at this edit summary for an example of how it is done. Please let me know if you have any questions, or have a look at WP:Copying within Wikipedia for more information. Thanks, — Diannaa (talk) 13:27, 13 June 2022 (UTC)
How can I provide attribution? Can you do that for me? It seems I don't know how to apply it. The oldid is [[24]]. — Radiant Fellow (talk) 12:12, 15 June 2022 (UTC)
It is done in the edit summary at the time you add the content. Please have a look at this edit summary for an example of how it is done. If you forget to do it at the time you add the content, you can do it in a subsequent edit. — Diannaa (talk) 12:17, 15 June 2022 (UTC)

How i can write without copyright article about this person I didn't know him personally, he is verified in Instagram and big engineer for Chris brown and Justin Bieber. VictoriaSaintQueen (talk) 14:28, 14 June 2022 (UTC)

Or study this module aimed at WikiEd students. — Diannaa (talk) 18:50, 14 June 2022 (UTC)

There are nearly 3,000 drafts awaiting review. You will have to wait your turn. The draft will not be accepted in its current condition, because it's worded like an advertisement. I have done some more copyright cleanup too. — Diannaa (talk) 12:04, 15 June 2022 (UTC)

Revdel

Hello Diannaa, could you rev-del the copyright violations in Urali Gounder starting from 13th February. It was copied from etribaltribune.com by a blocked sock Gounder parambarai and now resumed using IP socks. The same was probably added first by the same user on 12th February and was rev-deleted. Could you also protect the page since the present disruption started 5 days after the 3 month protection expired. Thanks. - SUN EYE 1 06:15, 16 June 2022 (UTC)

All done. Thanks for the report. — Diannaa (talk) 11:40, 16 June 2022 (UTC)
Thank you. - SUN EYE 1 15:37, 16 June 2022 (UTC)

Attribution

Hello, Diannaa. You may remember me from this discussion, where you helped me provide attribution from the copied storylines section in Andrea Somers. I have read through Template:Copied, but I am still struggling to understand how to do it. I was wondering if you could please help me provide attribution on Harlow Robinson (Neighbours), where the storylines section was copied from List of Neighbours characters (2019). Kind regards, - Therealscorp1an (talk) 22:49, 16 June 2022 (UTC)

When providing attribution, the edit summary is the part that is mandatory. It is done in the edit summary at the time you add the content. Please have a look at this edit summary for an example of how it is done. State whether the content was copied or moved. If you forget to do it at the time you add the content, you can do it in a subsequent edit. The template is optional. For the template, I use a simplified version that I keep in a sandbox. It looks like this:
{{Copied
|from =
|to =
|to_diff =
|date =
}}

For your particular usage, the template would be like this:

{{Copied
|from = List of Neighbours characters (2019)
|to = Harlow Robinson (Neighbours)
|to_diff = 1092702641
|date = June 12, 2022
}}
As you probably know, each edit has a unique numerical identifier that can be found at the end of that diff's url. So the number to place in the "to_diff" field is the diff number of the edit where you added the content. The template is placed on the talk page of both the article where you found the text and the article you copied/moved it to. — Diannaa (talk) 14:06, 17 June 2022 (UTC)
Thank you very much. - Therealscorp1an (talk) 20:04, 17 June 2022 (UTC)

Pokémon Ultimate Journeys: The Series

Hi @Diannaa: Reviewed this article Pokémon Ultimate Journeys: The Series at page review . I had to remove a block of copyvio. It came up on Earwig as a straight copy. scope_creepTalk 17:01, 17 June 2022 (UTC)

It appears to have come from Pokémon Master Journeys: The Series along with a lot of other plot descriptions. Please see the edit summary in this diff where they provide attribution as to where these plot descriptions came from. By the way if you could do me a favour and tell me in the future where you found the matching content? It usually helps also to paste the url where you found the matching content into your edit summary when you do the removal. I might be able to tell whether or not the place where you found the matching plot summary is a Wikipedia mirror. Thanks, — Diannaa (talk) 19:36, 17 June 2022 (UTC)
@Scope creep All of those summaries from the Pokémon Ultimate Journeys: The Series article is my own writing. So, if you're seeing copies of summaries on another site, that means that my work has been copied and pasted from the Wikipedia article. Yowashi (talk) 20:44, 17 June 2022 (UTC)
Hi @Yowashi: Yes, I thought it was the other way around. It was one entry in that list that came up in Earwig, so I thought one entry had been copied across for quickness. To be honest, I tend to avoid these kind of articles as I don't know about much about them. I will try and watch for it the next time. scope_creepTalk 20:50, 17 June 2022 (UTC)

Removed article Karene Agono

Hi @Diannaa: I know the rules. But don't you think it was best to flag the article rather than removing it completely? Maybe then I would have looked into the copyright violation and corrected it. Don't you see it as a better approach?— Preceding unsigned comment added by Hopilo12 (talkcontribs)

There's certainly more than one approach to copyright cleanup. I chose to remove the copied content, as is permitted by the policy. Might I suggest that you go back to the page where you got the text and try again? — Diannaa (talk) 18:19, 19 June 2022 (UTC)

May I please see what the offending material was? I have been doing copyvio checks all along, consistently, so I need to understand what I missed and figure out how it happened. May I please see what's been hidden? Jenhawk777 (talk) 21:54, 21 June 2022 (UTC)

Nevermind I figured it out and determined that sometimes I'm just an idiot. Sorry. And thank you. Jenhawk777 (talk) 22:55, 21 June 2022 (UTC)
Replied on your talk page. — Diannaa (talk) 23:14, 21 June 2022 (UTC)

Hoax article created by new editor

Hi Diannaa, I don't know where to report hoax articles, but I'm sure you'll know what to do. For some reason, a new editor has expended quite a bit of effort creating a hoax article about an obviously fake, non-existent people called the "Sukanthians". It's so ridiculous as to be laughable, but ignorant people might be taken in if they came across it. I've blanked the page, but it needs to be deleted. The same person also added content concerning this imaginary people to the existing article, San Miguel de Gualdape, with a link in it to the hoax Sukantha article. I've reverted that as well. Carlstak (talk) 01:51, 22 June 2022 (UTC)

Hi Carlstak. Hoax article = G3 speedy deletion. I have tagged it as such so an admin with more time can do a thorough look. Thanks for reporting. — Diannaa (talk) 01:57, 22 June 2022 (UTC)
Thanks for your speedy reply, Diannaa. Regards, Carlstak (talk) 02:00, 22 June 2022 (UTC)
They also added made-up stuff to Oxfordshire rising of 1596. I will monitor — Diannaa (talk) 02:07, 22 June 2022 (UTC)
Ah. I like the summary you used.;-) I've added that article to my watch list also. I think this person was either testing WP, or setting something up, to go to all the trouble of creating an article of over 14,000 bytes and adding made-up content with links to it in other articles. Carlstak (talk) 15:25, 22 June 2022 (UTC)
The fact that they did exactly 10 edits and waited a few days to get autoconfirmed gives me pause. I will monitor their contribs and see what they do next. — Diannaa (talk) 18:27, 22 June 2022 (UTC)

Hello,

Thank you for reviewing my creation of this page. I am the Website Officer for this hockey club and have been tasked with the creation of a Wikipedia page for our club. I can assure you that the content provided that you edited/removed is not copyrighted and is solely a background/history of the formation of our club. Thank you for your interest in working on Wikipedia. There are a couple of problems with your submission. Under current copyright law, literary works are subject to copyright whether they are tagged as such or not. No registration is required, and no copyright notice is required. So please always assume that all material online is copyright.
You cannot post copyright material on Wikipedia even if you are the copyright holder, unless special licensing permissions are in place. That is because Wikipedia aims to be freely distributable and copyable by anyone, and all content must have the appropriate documentation in place before that can happen. Please see Wikipedia:donating copyrighted materials which explains how it works.
The second problem is conflict of interest. Writing an article about your own organisation is strongly discouraged, as it is difficult to maintain the required neutral point of view. According to our terms of use, paid editors and people editing on behalf of their employer are required to disclose their conflict of interest by posting a notice on their user page or talk page. I have placed some information about conflict of interest on your user talk page. — Diannaa (talk) 12:30, 25 June 2022 (UTC)

Barnstar for you

Herzlichen Dank für Euren unermüdlichen Einsatz und die tolle Arbeit! Thanks for the barnstar! Only I merely have a good grasp of where to look things up. lol! — Diannaa (talk) 15:01, 26 June 2022 (UTC)

Removal of a public domain photo from an article

Potential replacement photo

Hi Diannaa, I'm not sure if you. can help on this or not, but I figured you might know who to send this to if you couldn't help directly. An IP user from Australia removed a photo from the Royal Australian Air Force article per this diff, with the summary, "Removed my photo as it is being used without my permission". I restored it, as the image is a USAF photo in the public domain. However, I'm not sure how the Foundation deals with such issues, or even how to respond to the user. Any thoughts? Thanks. BilCat (talk) 22:03, 27 June 2022 (UTC)

Legally I am unsure; they might have a right to ask for its removal since the photo was not taken in a public place. See commons:Commons:Country specific consent requirements. I suggest replacing it with one of the photos in commons:Category:People of the Royal Australian Air Force like File:3 AME Squadron member with PNG citizens in 2013.jpg or File:Group Captain Sonja Halloran, Australian Defence Attaché Tokyo, in October 2021.jpg or (my selection) File:No 2 Squadon RAAF leading aircraftswoman logging inspections in 2019.jpgDiannaa (talk) 23:55, 27 June 2022 (UTC)
Ok, thanks. I'll replace it with your suggestion. BilCat (talk) 00:15, 28 June 2022 (UTC)
Done, with a link to your comments in the edit summary. BilCat (talk) 00:20, 28 June 2022 (UTC)
👍 Like Image looks great. Thanks BilCat. — Diannaa (talk) 00:41, 28 June 2022 (UTC)

Again copied in the latest edit in Tamil mythology from https://arunachalamystic.blogspot.com/2014/08/goddess-mariamman-and-kasi-swami-temple.html and https://cultureandheritage.org/2022/03/the-alvars-tamil-vaishnava-poet-saints-of-south-india.html

He is also misusing Ip address 182.65.101.10 to edit warring in the same page.51.161.131.66 (talk) 07:29, 8 July 2022 (UTC)

The content in his recent addition was actually copied from Alvars and Mariamman. There's no evidence of edit warring. — Diannaa (talk) 12:06, 8 July 2022 (UTC)
