Blocking my DrKinsey user account[edit]

Dear Freakofnurture,

You blocked my DrKinsey user account and my IP address (220.245.179.130) on the basis that the username might be mistaken for Dr Alfred Kinsey, the zoologist and sexologist who published the (then) revolutionary Sexual Behavior in the Human Male (1948) and Sexual Behavior in the Human Female (1953).
Wikipedia's usernames policy advises users to "avoid using real names of famous figures (living or recently deceased)." (Emphasis added.)
Dr Alfred Kinsey died in 1956. That is almost 50 years ago. I don't think you would maintain that someoene who died half a century ago is "recently deceased".
That Dr Alfred Kinsey died in the middle of last century is now known fairly widely because of the recent biopic, entitled Kinsey and starring Liam Neeson. I appreciate that you may not have seen the film or be aware of Kinsey's biography. However, you can be confident that there are unlikely to be many (any?) users who could mistake me for Dr Alfred Kinsey resurrected!
While I accept the usernames policy, and I understand the rationale which discourages user names similar to those of recently deceased public figures, there are many Wikipedia users who use historical names. (It may make one feel old, but Alfred Kinsey is now a historical figure.)
If you feel a need to block me in the future, I would appreciate your leaving a note on my talk page to inform me of your intentions.
By the way, I appreciated the link on your talk page to this site for copy editors.

I'm impressed that you have some knowledge of your namesake. And I must give you some credit for not calling yourself User:ChairmanMao, so I've unblocked you. However, any further disruptive behavior (such as that which you already admitted to at User talk:Curps) will surely result in further blockage. Please try to make some positive contributions and create a better reputation. Find an article in your area of interest and try to make it better. As for this link, you should thank User:Bkell. Dear Freak,

Thank you for your prompt and reasonable unblocking of my account. I thought you would see reason.

I don't want to make a song and dance about it, but I actually didn't admit to disruptive behaviour at Curps' talk page. (If you're really concerned, please read my comments there carefully - I only admitted creating the User:Jimbo_Wa1es account as an experiment and that I had no intention of using it.) Curps has called me a vandal, an impersonator and a sockpuppet, and he has accused me of other offences I didn't commit. (What happened to Don't bite the newcomers?) Now all these things are floating around on Wikipedia to discredit my normal edits. Curps is ignoring my attempts to resolve our differences, so I'm going to ask him to undergo some sort of dispute resolution in an effort to get justice on this issue. I hope he doesn't consider that disruptive behaviour.

I will stay out of trouble.

I have edited articles for a while on aspects of early music, law and Germanic languages. I actually set up the DrKinsey account for editing sex-related articles only (hence the name). It just seemed appropriate - I didn't really want readers of my contributions on Australian English to be scandalised by user contributions on clitoris!

While you are familiarizing yourself with wikipedia guidelines, please read WP:SOCK policy carefully as it discusses that issue at length. Also, it is normal behavior for most users to edit articles over a wide range of topics. Read the Wikipedia:Content disclaimer. You need not worry about whether somebody might be offended your choice of articles to edit. Last of all, I can assure you that any user account whose name imitates or disparages "Jimbo Wales" or any other well-known wikipedian will never be unblocked, regardless of the excuse for creating it, so spare the effort. — FREAK OF NUR_xTURE (TALK) 18:33, Dec. 28, 2005

I'll certainly read those policies. (I've read more Wikipedia policies in the last few days than I ever imagined could exist.)

My issues with Curps are more about his false allegations of vandalism and creating phoney accounts than anything to do with User:Jimbo_Wa1es.

He really should make sure he's correct before he starts accusing people of creating accounts called User:CURPS YOU GOD DAMNED FuCKING FUCK BOT STOP TELLing mE WHAT TO DO. He seems to assume the worst about everybody. DrKinsey 19:02, 28 December 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Miike[edit]

Dear DrKinsey,

You're right. I didn't notice the grammar changes and I am sorry for "destroying" them. I only wanted to correct some stylistic points with the revert, which i have now done, while keeping your grammar changes intact. As for pronunciation, I had two objections, firstly that it's not his given name, and secondly that writing Mee-kay is ugly and ambiguous. (Wikipedia:Manual of Style (pronunciation)) You're absolutely right about keeping the Japanese version of his name though, which someone else wanted to remove. (Wikipedia:Manual of Style (Japan-related articles)#People's names). However, there is no need to bold every Miike in the text. Also a wikilink by you to epic films was broken, but I thought it was intact and present in the version I reverted to. Apparently not. Sorry for my mistake, just wanted to clear this up and avoid any confusion.

Thanks. Basically, I want to know how to create the page. The format I can recycle from somewhere else. Just by way of example, some of the people who enter "magazine" are looking for a print publication, some for an ammunition depot and some for an ammunition clip. Somebody who types simply "magazine" should get to a disambiguation page.

I'm not proposing anything; I don't care about magazine; I'm just trying to understand this. If tomorrow I decide to write an article on, for example, Peter Allen (criminal), a notorious Australian criminal, I must ensure that he is not confused with Peter Allen, a notorious Australian singer.

Leaving aside the issue of whether it is better to distinguish them by a disambiguation page or disambiguation link, what is the actual process for creating the new page Peter Allen (disambiguation) after I have created the new page Peter Allen (criminal)? If neither of the Peter Allens is more notable than the other, it would be appropriate to move the first Peter Allen to "Peter Allen (singer)". This will automatically create a redirect from the old title. So then you would change the redirect at "Peter Allen" into a disambiguation page. Also, you would need to go to Special:Whatlinkshere/Peter Allen and edit each of those articles to point to the new title to avoid confusion. However, if the singer is clearly more famous than the criminal, a disambiguation link at the top of the singer's page would be best. I don't know which is the case, as I have not heard of either one of them.
