About your sandbox[edit]

I'm impressed by the amount of work you've put in to your User:Dragonboat Ronin/sandbox but before you go on much further in this direction let me point out a few things:

  • It is too large. Usually, when an article gets to be around 100K, we start trying to spin sections of it out into separate articles. Your sandbox is over twice this size. (You can create more than one sandbox or, better, userspace drafts.)
  • You are doing references wrong. The sooner you start using one of the accepted ways, the better off you'll be.
  • Unless you show some signs of contributing to the encyclopedia outside of this sandbox, it may be subject to deletion as misuse of Wikipedia as a web host.

Given the right sort of sources, I think there's a good chance that a whole family of articles about the sport of Dragon Boat racing could be added to the encyclopedia. But start with the most salient points first. — jmcgnh(talk) (contribs) 08:28, 20 November 2019 (UTC)[reply]

A tag has been placed on User:Dragonboat Ronin/sandbox requesting that it be speedily deleted from Wikipedia. This has been done under section U5 of the criteria for speedy deletion, because the page appears to consist of writings, information, discussions, and/or activities not closely related to Wikipedia's goals. Please note that Wikipedia is not a free web hosting service. Under the criteria for speedy deletion, such pages may be deleted at any time.

If you think this page should not be deleted for this reason, you may contest the nomination by visiting the page and clicking the button labelled "Contest this speedy deletion". This will give you the opportunity to explain why you believe the page should not be deleted. However, be aware that once a page is tagged for speedy deletion, it may be deleted without delay. Please do not remove the speedy deletion tag from the page yourself, but do not hesitate to add information in line with Wikipedia's policies and guidelines. If the page is deleted, and you wish to retrieve the deleted material for future reference or improvement, then please contact the deleting administrator, or if you have already done so, you can place a request here. — jmcgnh(talk) (contribs) 03:05, 21 November 2019 (UTC)[reply]

November 2019[edit]

Information icon Welcome to Wikipedia. It might not have been your intention, but you removed a speedy deletion tag from User:Dragonboat Ronin/sandbox, a page you have created yourself. If you believe the page should not be deleted, you may contest the deletion by clicking on the button that says: Contest this speedy deletion which appears inside the speedy deletion notice. This will allow you to make your case on the talk page. Administrators will consider your reasoning before deciding what to do with the page. Thank you. — jmcgnh(talk) (contribs) 03:26, 21 November 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Wikipedia and copyright[edit]

Control copyright icon Hello Dragonboat Ronin, and welcome to Wikipedia. Your additions to User:Dragonboat Ronin/sandbox have been removed in whole or in part, as they appear to have added copyrighted content without evidence that the source material is in the public domain or has been released by its owner or legal agent under a suitably-free and compatible copyright license. (To request such a release, see Wikipedia:Requesting copyright permission.) While we appreciate your contributions to Wikipedia, there are certain things you must keep in mind about using information from sources to avoid copyright and plagiarism issues.

  • You can only copy/translate a small amount of a source, and you must mark what you take as a direct quotation with double quotation marks (") and cite the source using an inline citation. You can read about this at Wikipedia:Non-free content in the sections on "text". See also Help:Referencing for beginners, for how to cite sources here.
  • Aside from limited quotation, you must put all information in your own words and structure, in proper paraphrase. Following the source's words too closely can create copyright problems, so it is not permitted here; see Wikipedia:Close paraphrasing. (There is a college-level introduction to paraphrase, with examples, hosted by the Online Writing Lab of Purdue.) Even when using your own words, you are still, however, asked to cite your sources to verify the information and to demonstrate that the content is not original research.
  • Our primary policy on using copyrighted content is Wikipedia:Copyrights. You may also want to review Wikipedia:Copy-paste.
  • If you own the copyright to the source you want to copy or are a legally designated agent, you may be able to license that text so that we can publish it here. Understand, though, that unlike many other sites, where a person can license their content for use there and retain non-free ownership, that is not possible at Wikipedia. Rather, the release of content must be irrevocable, to the world, into the public domain (PD) or under a suitably-free and compatible copyright license. Such a release must be done in a verifiable manner, so that the authority of the person purporting to release the copyright is evidenced. See Wikipedia:Donating copyrighted materials.
  • In very rare cases (that is, for sources that are PD or compatibly licensed) it may be possible to include greater portions of a source text. However, please seek help at Wikipedia:Media copyright questions, the help desk or the Teahouse before adding such content to the article. 99.9% of sources may not be added in this way, so it is necessary to seek confirmation first. If you do confirm that a source is public domain or compatibly licensed, you will still need to provide full attribution; see Wikipedia:Plagiarism for the steps you need to follow.
  • Also note that Wikipedia articles may not be copied or translated without attribution. If you want to copy or translate from another Wikipedia project or article, you must follow the copyright attribution steps in Wikipedia:Translation#How to translate. See also Wikipedia:Copying within Wikipedia.

It's very important that contributors understand and follow these practices, as policy requires that people who persistently do not must be blocked from editing. If you have any questions about this, you are welcome to leave me a message on my talk page. Thank you. Doug Weller talk 07:36, 15 December 2019 (UTC)[reply]

You're obviously an enthusiast and the sport is interesting, but do you have any other involvement in it?[edit]

Please read WP:COI. Doug Weller talk 07:56, 15 December 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Greetings Doug. I am a dragonboat racer, though currently no longer active. I dont have any affiliation with any of the dragonboat organizations sports governing bodies and i am not compensated in any way for my involvement in the sport. I do promote and recommend the sport to anyone interested and both have been and hope to be involved as a volunteer at dragonboat events. I have membership in a few sports clubs that i paddle with, though i am presently not active. I hope this answers your inquiry but let me know if you have other questions. Best, Dragonboat Ronin (talk) 16:02, 15 December 2019 (UTC)[reply]

That's fine and no problem. Thanks for your response. Doug Weller talk 16:07, 16 December 2019 (UTC)[reply]
