Deletion of Page: User:JLevangie02420

I understand your decision to delete my user page. I thought I was doing the right thing by "experimenting in the sandbox or user page." I was hoping you might be able to at least send me a copy of my code? It took me a bit of time and I'd like the chance to place my page through the proper methods. Armenia

Things weren't as bad as they were portrayed to be. The so-called "riots" (really a single grocery store and some broken windows) completely overshadowed the greater than 100,000 peaceful protest held during the day in the same area. (This was the plan.) Most of the people -- there are many photos yet unpublished -- were peaceful and not rioting. True they were waiting for the riot police and army with metal rods and Molotov cocktails, but the vast majority were not involved in any grocery store looting. (That was between 20-50 people at most.)

Hi. I know you haven't had a chance to come back and weigh in on this DRV, should you be so inclined, but I just wanted to ask you if you would mind these articles being moved back to article space so they can be tagged {{notenglish}} and brought to the attention of the editors at Wikipedia:Pages needing translation into English. The editor who initiated the conversation has expressed some concern that tagging them so in userspace violates the spirit of WP:Userpage, and I can understand that. It seems like the question of handling foreign language articles may well be due a meta discussion. In the ANI thread, User:6SJ7 has suggested creating an article subspace for them. ←Hi. :) I guess the issue with this editor is that he feels uncomfortable linking somebody's user space for other editors to translate and doesn't want to leave it for the editor who requested them. As to the purpose of the DRV and ANI threads, I suspect that the editor in question may have lost sight at that moment when he headed to ANI of the fact that there aren't generally that many emergencies on Wikipedia and that a simple conversation discussing his concerns directly with you might have led to a resolution. (Judging by what he said at DRV, he seems not to have been aware at first that it existed; he may not have much experience with this aspect of things.) You did, after all, come to terms with the other editor who questioned the deletions. :) As I noted above, this does seem due for a meta discussion. I myself have tagged a number of articles {{notenglish}} and then sort of hovered over them until the translators had either addressed them...or not. Once, somebody relocated an article that had been tagged for translation, and the translators lost it for over a month. (The redirect was deleted.) Some kind of specialized space for this would be ideal. I personally think it would be a nice gesture if you didn't mind these articles heading back to article space for processing. While keeping these in article space might be process for the sake of process, there seems to be at least a chance that it's not and it could speed resolution of this issue with less drama. I don't know this contributor, but evidence suggests good faith and a good contribution history, even if he was perhaps a bit precipitous in reacting in this situation. --Moonriddengirl (talk) 22:33, 5 March 2008 (UTC)

You removed my Prod from Duckie Brown. Could you please enlighten me as to the evidence of notability - not just an assertion (which would be enough to remove a CSD)? I'm looking for "An organization is generally considered notable if it has been the subject of coverage in reliable, independent secondary sources" and I just don't see the sources. Sounds-Write Deletion

Hi there, I just discovered that (on 13th March) you deleted the entry for Sounds-Write, the reason being that it was "much too ad-like". So, I wanted to find out what was wrong with the page and, if possible, to get it reinstated.

The entry was very brief, and all the statements were factual, so in fact I wonder if its brevity counted against it? The intention was that we would add more content when we got the time, we didn't intend to leave it that short forever.

For reference, the page of a company which is similar to Sounds-Write in many ways is:

Regarding the deletion of two new articles on very popular work (book) by Watchman Nee

Hi,

I recently created/edited pages such as "Further Talks on the Church Life" and "The Normal Christian Church Life". Both of these books are very popular, widely read, much translated, and, a good subject. The reason given for (speedily) deletion was "not an article".

I somewhat disagree to that as the each and every articles takes some time to get to its full length and shape. Both of these entries (I would say) could be the best articles on wikipedia for those looking on these subjects. I understand that not every book can be made into an article on wikipedia but atleast we can do with few those which are worthy of being created as an article on wikipedia.

Secondly, if you read pages on Watchman Nee and the Church, it seems that both of these books deserves a place. As far as I know both books are as good as an article on them could be.

Finally, I don't know what exactly you are looking for in an article on books, but all I can say now is that please consider to re-publish those and if you read pages of articles on Witness Lee, local church, and the ground of the church -there is enough justification to put some articles addressing these subjects on wikipedia in encyclopedic style.

Raljoball

Why would you delete this article so soon. I just needed more time to edit it. I understand everyone else's opinions but there really wasn't a good enough argument against it. There are many far less notable articles on the site. A few people said nothing that is created in a day can belong to wikipedia. This is false information since raljoball was made in 2004. There are shows, and movies, and many other various articles that have been around for much less than this. Why should they be able to get a page. There is a reference to a website on here about raljoball. You may say this doesn't mean it is notable, but it all depends on who you ask. There are thousands of people in the U.S. who are familiar with raljoball. I can guartee more people know of it and have played it than many other articles in Wikipedia. I am asking you to show fair judgement, and give the Raljoball article another chance. I never got around to improving it to it's full capacity. This is for personal reasons I choose not to disscus. Please allow more time. Honestly, do many people know sports like Lapta, Oina, Snooker, Hopper ballooning, Korfball, Tchoukball, Bandy, Knotty, Xare or Pington? No, and all of these have articles. Rubber stamping sports articles

I notice you are marking as "patrolled" dozens of one-sentence "articles" about people whose only distinction is -- at least from the content of the article -- that they once belonged to a team. Do you think these articles are valuable to Wiki? What reader is going to thank Wiki for being directed to a page with effectively no content?

As someone who ran a Web site with millions of visitors a year, I can guess that the traffic to pages such as "Swede Youngstrom" will number a handful in a year. None of whom will stay on that page for longer than 30 seconds.

What exactly is accomplished by slavishly following (someone's interpretation) of Wiki policy to absurdity?

And directing people toward absolutely nothing is better? Server space is cheap, as long as they have enough context to determine who they are, a short article seen by a dozen is better than that dozen people getting no information at all. Also, its often much easier for users to expand a stub than it is to start completely from scratch, especially unregistered users who can't start new articles. Mr.Z-man 17:14, 31 March 2008 (UTC)
Maybe it's correct that providing the date of someone's birth and death is an important help to writing an article (somehow I doubt it), but Wiki should be for reader's convenience, not a hypothetical, one-time editor.
Server space isn't even close to the issue. The issue is putting articles in Wiki with little or no content, that quite valuable editor time is wasted on.
Another issue is that "Swede Youngstrom" article, we can all agree, needs some tags describing how to improve it. By rubber-stamping the article, it disappears from the radar of a more conscientious Wiki editor who has longer than 1/7th of a minute to do a review. That's right! 7 "patrolled" articles in one minute. Did he even read them?

Help with Marxus?

As an administrator you have had a history of dealing with User:Marxus and I hoped you might give me some direction. I recently added infoboxes to the Richard Brautigan book pages. Marxus deleted them without comment. I added them back, asking that if he has a reason to delete the boxes, he please go to the talk pages and discuss them. Use of JSTOR in Melungeon

An editor referenced an article through JSTOR, and it's probably a good article but not available to people without access to JSTOR. What is Wikipedia's position on this? Academics can access it, but no one else. --Parkwells (talk) 15:53, 9 April 2008 (UTC)

References in JSTOR are still valid. It's not that much different than something coming from the NY Times archives (which are available only to certain people). Even with offline references one has to assume that it's valid, unless you can find it at your local library or are willing to pay money for it. howcheng {chat} 17:28, 9 April 2008 (UTC)

Dab pages

Hi there, DS! This is what I don't understand about Wikipedia. Why can't I create a dab page for articles that don't yet exist? This way people will know that there were two (or more) people under the same name and they will be able to tell which one they should be looking for. Vanity page deletion?

It's my understanding that vanity pages are not really considered relevant to wikipedia, and I blanked one, but it was just recovered because my blanking was reasonably detected as vandalism. I read some of the wikipedia help documents, and they said I should contact an admin if I think a page should be deleted. I chose you to ask for help because you marked the entry in question as "patrolled." Please let me know if I am wrong about the page being a vanity page, and what is the proper action I should take in these cases so that I don't inconvenience or offend.

I see that the article on Glory Days (musical) has been deleted as not yet notable. This musical will open on Broadway in previews on April 22, 2008, official opening May 6. Disambiguation pages are used when there are multiple articles that would normally have the same name, such as Britain. If you wish to redirect Fwe to Few, that might be reasonable. But the acronym for food warming equipment would go at FWE. Those are different page titles, so they don't need to be disambiguated. Dear Administrator, would you please reconsider the deletion of the page titled "Stories of Change"? Since your deletion log says there might have been copy violation and there is none! Please also note that I have contributed to wikipedia earlier also (Look for the page titled "Bari Siddiqui") and have no intention to exploit this portal otherwise!

I agree that super heavy element pages are questionable, but I find it completely inexplicable to have all the pages up to 132, have a GAP at 133 145 and 135, and then to have pages 136 137 138 and 139. I could understand dumping everything above some cutoff, but why on earth would you be specifically protecting/enforcing a gap of three in the middle??? By the way, in case you're interested there is a new (24 Apr 2008) science paper claiming discovery of element ~122 http://arxiv.org/abs/0804.3869 . Knockout Literary Magazine

You deleted the Knockout Literary Magazine article, on the grounds that it wasn't notable. The magazine is notable -- it's had considerable press coverage, it has published National Book Award Winners, U.S. Poets Laureate, and an upcoming issue will feature a Nobel Laureate. In addition, the magazine is well-known among both everyday writers and the GLBT community for its juxtaposition of gay and straight writers. As a literary venture, it has been nothing short of a success. It should therefore be included on wikipedia, as others may find out about it and its writers (MANY of whom have their own articles). In addition, the article was written according to wikipedia standards, it was unbiased, cited its sources, and was present on the site with no major problems. So why delete it? Deleting the website according to lack of "notability" seems more arbritrary than anything else, as journal is quite notable, particularly in the American literary scene.

Why have you trimmed Phentrimine so bad? If you were not blind you could see that external links DID lead to information (by the way the source of the article). And now the article is dumb.

a) If I shouldn't revert changes wholesale, then why should you? My version of an article was complete. Your trimmed version is particular, just a couple of unconnected sentences taken out of the context of my article. It's not informative.

I just created a page for cass world. I hope it is sort of within guidelines. I did push the edge by mentioning that Cass world is trying to save a waterfall in The Neversink Gorge. Please advise how I can make the page better. I really played down Cass World. It is a very important site that was responsible for helping create the social networking genera. The founder has served as an adviser to many social network sites and I intend to develop it's history. I wanted to stress that Cass World focuses upon charity work and will be trying to create an event in 2009 to celebrate the 40th anniversary of The Woodstock Festival by getting a philanthropic group to buy The Turner Brook Reserve and establish it as an artist colony / environmental awareness "working laboratory" in the spirit of "The Summer of Love."

Keith Henson on Meme page

Hi DF67,

The cassworld stuff is unimportant. What concerns me more is that Keith Henson keeps getting "erased" from the meme page. As I understand it this is pretty much vandalism. As I see it, Henson is an important contributor to memetics and has published serious work. I would like to propose that his entry be "protected" as long as it doesn't directly mention scientology. I don't believe than any "religion" should be singled out on the meme page. However the fact that he is controversional and he has gone to jail for what could be considered his passion to defend the concept of "meme" is notable and should be considered to be added to the meme page. As it now stands, I have copied the first 2 sentences from his bio page to his section on the meme page. If this section is removed would it be considered an act of vandalism?

Now I do have Villaringa's e-mail address, plus as I have said, I worked on his article in my "Workshop" and let him look at it to make any corrections before posting it on the mainspace. The information which Riana added wasn't much of a big deal, however in the edit summary it is stated that what I posted was "misinformation" which is a misleading statement which I resent since the article has been reviewed by the subject himself. After I wrote the article in my workshop, I asked Col. Villaronga to look at it and to tell me if there were any corrections to be made. This is what he suggested via e-mail:

Interesting, well for the record, I have known Mr Cure in the past – we were at university together, though I have not seen or spoken to him for nearly five years, so I would not claim to fall into your “blacklist” category of friends and family! Having just read your interesting article on “sockpuppets” I find it strange that the activities of twelve year old children have seemingly cast aspersions on the character of genuine contributors! Can I prove who I am? Well, what do you want – my passport, my driving licence, my finger prints? How can anyone who contributes to any article prove who they are?

You make a curious point about “vanity publishing.” Clearly you find it a threatening prospect? On what grounds can you claim that, by definition, a book published by such companies is of no significance or note? Do you apply the same logic to bands such as Korn, who have self-funded record labels? What about Arend Wieman or Tony Grey, two authors I can claim to have never met, but I have read and admired their works (both of whom are available via Trafford)? Some of my favourite bands have been unsigned. Some of my favourite artwork has only ever been seen by a handful of people. What makes things valid and acceptable is the judgement of the audience and if the audience has to go out of their way to find the artist, then in my view, it makes the piece of art even more worthwhile as a statement than if it is delivered en masse.

If you’re definition of “noteworthy” merely relies on the book having been taken on (with the author’s permission) by a publishing company of your approval, then I assume you are of the attitude that a singer is only any good if Simon Cowell allows he or she passage to the next stage of the X Factor?!

On the same note, I have a friend (a current one – so you may safely assume me to be a “sockpuppet” if I were to add an article in this case!) who is a fellow lecturer at Plymouth University . He is writing an academic text that will be self-published through Lulu (which I believe from his website is a channel used by Mr Cure at present). He tells me there are no costs attributed to this – so presumably there is no cause to assume his vanity? Moreover, it is a safe estimate that the book will sell to approximately a thousand students. Now, a curious student is a potent creature and if they are anything like me, they will house a demand for further information. However, will you simply remove an article on the poor man, just because of the company under which his books are published “doesn’t meet your criteria”?

I thought the whole point of Wikipedia was that it was “free.” Open for people to contribute accurate and impartial information. And I assumed that if there was a genuine interest and demand for information, it was worthy. If I want access to primary sources of data, or an array of factual information, I will go straight to source in book form – I don’t know anyone who views Wikipedia as anything other than an interesting source of free information. It is not, nor should it be, a private members club. I am “free” to use my mouth to speak. There are no boundaries to what I can say. Nor is there to what I can write. Yet the internet is persistent in its barriers to entry. Be it bandwidth, webservers, programming languages, or in this case, overly officious (and dare I say it, pompous and self-congratulatory) gatekeepers, it is not free.

The aforementioned colleague recently spoke with Clare Nasir, another former student of our University currently working for GMTV as a weather presenter. She made an interesting point that, if you produce an album that the masses deem a masterpiece, you will find wikipedia articles on every line of every song. However, if you wish to produce a new article on a far higher level subject, you're more likely than not to be deleted. She, however, is a scientist, so perhaps the same rules don’t apply. In the case of Daniel Cure, I have read two of his novels and enjoyed them. Deleting Charles Cronenworth Jr.

Who gave you the right to delete my father's name from the Silver Star page and the personal page that I set up with info about his military career? You have insulted his name and my family. He served in 2 wars and was wounded several times while fighting for his country. I'd like to know why you just decided to delete the article on MVaaS. In your comments you state that the article was "too ad like". That's your opinion and that's fine but I think that it's a bit unwikipedia like for you to decide to delete this article simply because it seems "too ad like" to you. Would it not make more sense to let the community decide how to change the article to be less ad like? Seems like the goal here is unfettered sharing of information with the masses not censorship. Managed Video as a Service is an entity that exists just like Software as a Service. Are you going to delete the articles about SaaS as well because they seem too ad like?

Conversations In A Box

I saw you deleted an article I wrote about a high school play entitled "Conversations in a box" due to it not being notable enough. The play was showcased as one of the best one-act plays in New England, is this still considered "local interest" and thus not notable enough? I had referenced several sources, however I do agree that they are newspapers that probably wouldn't be read much outside New England. Basically I'm confused on how local "local interest" really is. This was uncalled for and rude. If you want to warn a user do so, however do not say "Cut the crap or you're out." You can't kick someone out of a free and any-user-can-edit encyclopedia, however if they are not helpful warn then should it get further block, but not with that kind of unneccessary rudeness. I am really enjoying the wikipedia community and I hope I have been more helpful than harmful in my time here.

I had a young man send me a brief note after I noticed his plea to you to be "adopted" and took the initiative to say hi to him. I sensed something in his tone that reminded me of me when I was in my 20's and I wanted you to take a moment, if you have time, to make sure he isn't too disouraged or distraught. I asked him to reach out to me if he needed help and I believe that he understood the context I offered it. When a young person turns to a "community" of any kind and is "censored" (no matter how appropriately) the community is responsible to ensure the young person has someone or someplace to turn to so as to make sense of what he has done wrong to make the "consensus" disapprove of him/her.
