New Rochelle discussion notice

New Rochelle problem discussion notification: I've opened a new discussion at Wikipedia:Administrators' noticeboard#Long-running problem with respect to New Rochelle area articles.

This relates to the 4 part proposal i opened on March 26, which was closed on March 27 and archived at Wikipedia:Administrators' noticeboard/Archive187#Proposal for unban, apology, amnesty for Jvolkblum and related others, and topic ban for Orlady.

This is a courtesy notice to all parties who had more than a one word comment in the previous discussion. I think it is a problem that won't go away, and I hope that you will be part of the solution, whether or not you and I have agreed previously. I hope that we can at least clarify the problem, if not immediately agree upon a solution. If anyone thinks this is inappropriate canvassing, I am sure they will express that. I don't anticipate too many separated discussions on this topic, but if this one is closed and a new one opens, I'll probably notify you again, unless you ask me not to. doncram (talk) 03:34, 1 April 2009 (UTC)

Re: Question regarding ACC

I did the request because the request was left there for about 30 minutes without you taking action on it. I didn't see you online (on the bottom of the screen), so I did it. I want to just give you this advice, do the request soon after you reserve it, so people don't complain about waiting. Sorry about that through. Techman224Talk 20:40, 3 April 2009 (UTC)

I broke the reservation because I had to do something and I didn't have the time to do it, if someone does break their reservation, then it's ok to reserve it yourself. Techman224Talk 23:40, 3 April 2009 (UTC)

Satellite image of Hamish near peak intensity

Storm of the month
Cyclone Hamish formed as a Tropical Low to the south of Papua New Guinea on March 4. The low quickly organized and became Tropical cyclone Hamish the following day. Hamish then started to rapidly intensify, becoming the second severe tropical cyclone of the season the next day. Throughout much of its duration, it moved southeastward, parallel to the coast of Queensland. It underwent rapid deepening over a period of 48 hours, Hamish reached peak winds of 215 km/h (130 mph) according to the Australia Bureau of Meteorology, making the cyclone a Category 5 on the Australian intensity scale. It quickly weakened due to wind shear, and without moving ashore it stalled and turned to a northwest drift. The low dissipated on March 5.

Hamish indirectly caused a major environmental disaster along the Queensland coastline, when strong waves from the cyclone damaged the hull of a cargo ship, spilling 260 tonnes of fuel and oil into the ocean. The oil washed onto the coastline, endangering the environment prompting a costly cleanup. Offshore, the fishermen went missing after the boat was lost; one person was found, although the other two remained missing and were presumed dead. As the storm remained offshore, overall damage directly from the storm was minor, primarily from strong waves.

Other tropical cyclone activity

  • Australia – In addition to Cyclone Hamish, three other cyclones formed and were named as Gabrielle, Ilsa and Jasper. However, there was no impact reported from these three storms whilst in the Australian region.
  • South Pacific – This month Cyclones Joni and Ken formed near to the Cook Islands, whilst Cyclone Jasper moved into the area at its peak and brought heavy rain and coastal erosion to New Caledonia. On the last day of the month Tropical Depression 14F formed to the northeast Fiji.
  • South-West Indian – Severe Tropical Storm Izilda was the only storm to form in the South-West Indian Ocean this month; however the extratropical remnants of Ilsa moved into the region from the Australian basin.

Project News
There is a discussion on the state of the project, discussing whether it still works like it used to, and what can be done about it. One extreme position is labeling the project inactive, while another position is eliminating some of the bureaucracy. Input would be very beneficial.

As part of the above discussion, there is a request for all active members to sign a list to affirm they are still active members in the project. If you don't sign the list, or if you don't consider yourself active anymore, your name will be placed on the inactive members list on May 1st.

Hurricanehink has organised a challenge to try and improve some of the Tropical cyclone articles. The rules are that you must take either an seasonal or a storm article from one of the eight basins we have, that is either a Stub, Start class or a brand new article and improve it to at least GA status. However to avoid several articles on cyclones that did not affect land, Hurricanehink has limited the challenge to storms/seasonal articles of Mid-importance or higher. Their is an exception to this rule for the Central Pacific as Cyclones rarely form in this basin. - For full details of the challenge see the Project's Talkpage Project member list

Re: RfA

I just saw no point in continuing a discussion which was obviously going to end one way. I appreciate your support, and everyone else's who !voted on that RfA, but it is incredibly hard to continue when everything I have been working on for the past six months is claimed to be some sort of façade. As for WP:100, I'm not too bothered about arbitrary numbers, I'm more worried that I am doing the right thing, and from what I am being told, it is clear that such is not the case. I do find it hard to bear the community's excoriation, but I trust that they are a better judge of myself than I. Again, thanks a lot, Dylan. Your confidence in me speaks a lot, and it is much more important to keep such confidence and trust by not letting people down than grasping for something of which it would be inappropriate to receive at this time. Thanks, though, and I really do mean that. :) — neuro(talk)(review) 20:25, 9 April 2009 (UTC)

re User talk:Aun mehdi

I have not bothered to link the above page, since I deleted it per your WP:CSD#G8 but I note you had not tagged the userpage. I have now deleted that page also, but could not find an appropriate criteria so did it under "Other", noting that it was an inappropriate use of a userpage - hosting a none notable article. The reason I am telling you all this is because I wish to congratulate you on your enterprise; by listing the talkpage as G8 you required the admin to review the userpage, which you did not tag since there was no clear criteria. Good thinking, and well worked. LessHeard vanU (talk) 13:34, 11 April 2009 (UTC)

FYI, I see there is a category WP:CSD#U2 which was used on the userpage of another talkpage tagged by you. I hope this helps for the future. LessHeard vanU (talk) 23:22, 11 April 2009 (UTC)

Account Creation Interface

Hi!

I've just noticed a request that's come in for User:Dxb543 from 86.96.226.88, which you dropped, and I'd like to know the reason behind this, especially as several other people can find nothing that would prevent account creation for that request. I also noticed that you have been dealing with requests extremely quickly, and am growing very concerned that you might be racing to complete requests, and not checking requests properly, or jumping to conclusions. Please can you reassure me that this is not the case, and give reasoning behind this drop.

I've suspended your access to the interface so we can address these issues before continuing.

Regards,

Stwalkerstertalk ] 19:40, 12 April 2009 (UTC)

I will gladly explain my actions on ACC. I dropped that IP's request because I saw vandalism/unconstructive editing from that IP mere minutes before the request was made. (Or at least I thought that edit was vandalism.) At the time (the IP is public), I thought that public IP's meant trouble; they do mostly vandalize, and it is said on the header, "expect vandal requests, and drop them when you see them." As such, I dropped the request. But now I realize that this is invalidated if the IP is public; any person from that IP could be requesting an account. It seems that I have a habit of reviewing accounts quickly – I always thought that this speed was OK (although, I assure you that I was reviewing every option for review for every account that I reviewed). In the future, I will assess requests at ACC slower and more carefully. Although, I would prefer that my suspension stand until tomorrow, as I feel like I could use a refreshing break from ACC.
On an unrelated side note; Happy Easter, Stwalkerster. :)
Dylan620 Wishes you a Happy Easter! 21:43, 12 April 2009 (UTC)
Yeah, you have to remember that IP addresses are likely to be shared. The "vandal requests" notice was mainly referring to stuff which is actually covered by upolicy as well, and also known sock-puppeteers, so it does help to have a working knowledge of that too. (Grawp is mainly caught automatically now, but you still get ones like Hamish Ross, and others that still hang around). As long as you slow down, that's fine. I'll unsuspend you, but you don't have to come back until tomorrow if you don't want to (I'm about to run a software upgrade anyway). Oh, and Happy Easter to you too :) Stwalkerstertalk ] 21:57, 12 April 2009 (UTC)

There isn't really a simple answer to this question. Most of the time it is "no", but if you are unsure you should ask someone else for help. There isn't a deadline for handling the requests; if someone has to wait a bit longer for their account it is not the end of the world. — Jake Wartenberg 00:20, 20 April 2009 (UTC)

I noticed that you both opposed and snow-closed this RfA. For the record, while what you did won't do any harm, it's best not to close any RfA (or any discussion) that you've taken a position in, as it's technically a conflict of interest to do so (imagine an admin voting "keep" in an AfD, and then closing the debate as "keep"...it's inappopriate). This is not a warning, and don't consider it one: it's a just a note. Best wishes. Acalamari 20:33, 22 April 2009 (UTC)
